You might also want to check out the Circle S Shooting Ranch in Petaluma, CA.

http://www.sonomashooting.org/circles.html

The rangemaster there is excellent. If your not familiar with guns/gun safety you'll learn as soon as you step up to the line. Reminds me of my old drill instructor...$10 to shoot all day plus one target for rifle/pistol range(bring your own ammo). They only carry bird shot for shotgun if you want to shoot trap/skeet. .50 for additional targets. They say no rentals but they have a rack of rifles you can try out and just about any other shooter there will let you try theirs. It's an outdoor range, rifle range is covered and has shooting benches. If your shooting at 300 yards, you will be required to show the rangemaster that are capable of zeroing in at 100 yards before he'll let you shoot 300.

The Circle S Ranch isn't anything fancy, just a nice place to have some fun without any concrete walls around you.

Is there a limit on caliber of weapon you can bring? I am sure just like other ranges most rules apply (things like fully automatic and ya da ya da)

Not so sure about that. I zeroed in my buddies scope on his Marlin 45-70 the last time I was there without a problem. As far as automatics, I'm stationed on 1200 acres of federal land in Lake County where you can bring your automatics. The National Guard come by every year to do ordinance training so as long they aren't there blowing stuff up I can let my OIC know I'll be using the station grounds and lock the gates, put up the appropriate flags, ect you can have at it.

cool, i might have to have a scouting trip over there.  do you go there often?

I didn't see any restrictions on caliber.  What do you have?

I used to go as much as I could while I was at the Coast Guard station at Two Rock but I moved to Hidden Valley Lake, CA in Lake County so I just come to work an hour early and go shooting/hunting/fishing or I'll stay after work to shoot. It's only 7 minutes away from my place so I go whenever I want now:)
