Bass Pro / Quaker Steak & Lube GTG
October 25, 2008 12pm
Portage, IN

I spoke with Sirshopolot and Z66 Butch for their input on a Fall GTG.  There will be a Bass Pro Shops GTG at 6425 Daniel Burnham Dr. Portage, IN 46368 on Saturday October 25, 2008 at 12pm.  www.basspro.com
Afterwards we can head to Quaker Steak & Lube 6245 Ameriplex Dr Portage, IN 46368 for a late lunch/early dinner (located in the same complex as Bass Pro.)  www.quakersteakandlube.com (menu can be viewed here.)
LadyFX is handling the planning for this GTG.  She spoke with Bass Pro, they are expecting us & will have reserved parking for all of the AV's.  She also spoke with Quaker Steak & Lube, they are expecting us & will accommodate our group.
I will also post some information on points of interest in the area, in case anyone wants something to do after the GTG.

*Portage 16 IMAX Theater is located at 6550 US Highway 6 Portage, IN 46368 (about 5-10 minute drive from Bass Pro.)  They usually show the current popular movie on the IMAX all day/evening on Saturdays. I'll post the current schedule closer to the date.  We saw the new Batman movie there a couple of weeks ago.  Tickets were $12.50 for adults and $9.00 for kids.  There are also other regular screens in the theater complex $8.00 adults, $5.75 kids.  A large bucket of popcorn with 2 large sodas was about $11.00, free soda refills & .25 cent popcorn refills.

*Zao Island is located at 1050 Horse Prairie Ave Valparaiso, IN 46385.  They have an arcade, bumper cars, batting cages, minigolf, gokarts(outdoor activities weather permitting), & a bar.   www.zaoisland.net

*Shopping is available in Michigan City (Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets-120 stores Open until 9pm-601 Wabash St Michigan City, IN 46360)
and Merrillville/ Hobart (Westfield Southlake-Open until 9pm-2109 Southlake Mall Merrillville, IN 46410).

*Casino boats are in Michigan City, Buffington Harbor (Gary), East Chicago, and Hammond.

     *Four Winds Casino-New Buffalo, MI.

Hotel Information

There are about 8 hotels in that area.  LadyFX & I drove around & took a look at them.  There were a couple that we scratched off the list just from the outside appearance.  We use Tripadvisor for our hotel choices & have always had good luck.  The following are the top 4 recommended by Tripadvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g37452-Portage_Indiana-Hotels.html).

     1.  Country Inn & Suites
     2.  Hampton Inn
     3.  Holiday Inn Express
     4.  Super 8

The top 3 are in the $100 a night range.  Country Inn & Suites is the most expensive because it's brand new & in the same complex as Bass Pro.  Super 8 is $62 a night & has an OK rating.  LadyFX made the inquiries and came up with the following information:

2 double beds $51 a night (Senior $46)
*Senior=60 or older

You are on the List.  There's more there than fishing stuff.  It's an all around outdoor store...much like Cabela's.

Thanks for the replies.  The List is updated.  LadyFX is handling the planning for this GTG.  She spoke with Bass Pro today, they are expecting us & will have reserved parking for all of the AV's.  She also spoke with Quaker Steak & Lube, they are expecting us & will accommodate our group.  As we get closer to the date, I'll need a headcount, so let me now how many in your group when you finalize your plans.
LadyFX used to be a travel agent.  She is going to look into area hotels for those interested.  I'll post hotel info as soon as I get it.
I also added info on a family fun center called Zao Island, www.zaoisland.net

Lots of "Casino" attractions in the area!

(PS - Many hotels.  The days in is less than a block from the Bass Pro, QS&L.... there's a few other locations in Merrillville (Holiday Star / Radission) on I-65 / Rt. 30... which is about 15-20 minutes from Bass Pro)

I should be in.  Will know more when the date is closer. Thumbs up!

We were close to the area today, so we took a look at the hotels in the area.  There is a Country Inn & Suites in the same complex as Bass Pro & Quaker Steak.  There are several others in the area.  We scratched a few off the list just based on the external appearance Roll Eyes...Days Inn was one.
LadyFX will start making the inquiries & I'll post up the results when I get them.
We also looked around to get an idea for a breakfast location, if we get people staying overnight.

            What about ATV's?

NO, about the only thing you can do on the Indiana side of the dunes, is walk hand in hand with your loved ones, swim, sunbathe, and picnic in the shelter house, lol.

Now granted its been two years since we've camped up there, but I doubt things have changed.   Oh no beer either, lol.

I don't fish anymore so the Bass Pro Shop may not interest us but we do love Quaker Steak & Lube so put us on the list.

I only pretend to fish, I may as well put a sinker on my line with no hook or bait but I do enjoy being on the water.

I'd love to come down but that's a bad weekend for me, I have the first 16 days of November off work with no plans. I'll have plenty of time to spend my money a week later.

That took a second to sink in, up here we consider both Indiana and Illinois as being Western Ohio  Tongue   Detroit or Pontiac are about as far south as many people in Michigan travel.

Put the Mongo's down... I will check with D & D to see if they can make it.

As for casino's... If anyone is willing to head a little North (about 30 minute drive) and feeling a little lucky --  there is a brand new casino in New Buffalo, MI -- Four Winds.... Very Nice.  Haven't been there, but many people have given it the thumbs up.

Thanks LU  I need a hug

little Wendy is the largest obstacle stopping me from coming. Her complaint, "I don't know any of these people" doesn't fly any more as I have dragged her to a number of GTGs

Wendy doesn't get out and socialize much so she's uncomfortable with strangers or arriving at large gatherings but she warms up to the crowd (if I can get her there)

I'm quite the opposite, strangers are friends I haven't met yet !

GREAT, would be good to see them again!

Any pet friendly motels up that way, and why does the appearance of the Days Inn strike you as not good to stay at?

The Days inn is not that bad... its just the oldest of the hotels in that vicinity.

There's also a Hampton Inn & Super 8 (older also) in the area.

By far, the Country Inn & Suites (which is next door to the Quaker Steak & Lube...) is by far the nicest, as it just opened a year ago.

FYI: There's a Longhorn Steakhouse next to Bass Pro.   Very good food there also.

For those coming in from a distance... there's really not much to do within a few miles of the QSL.  There are the Indiana State dunes - less than 30 minutes away... which are real nice... and someone has already posted the information on it above.

There's a few other 'beaches' in the area (where you can drink alcohol - and area a little more 'lenient')... but alas, you have to go through a few 'shady' areas to get there (so if your not familiar with the area... yeah, you might want to stick with the Dunes)

There are MANY casinos within 45 minutes - any direction.

www.fourwindscasino.com
www.bluechipcasino.com
www.ameristarcasinos.com
http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/horseshoe-hammond/hotel-casino/property-home.shtml

Horseshoe (Harrahs) is by far the nicest of the bunch. It just opened in August.
Fourwinds is very nice too... granted these 2 are the farthest distance from Portage.

The Horseshoe Hammond has one of the largest 'Event' venues in the area.  They have yet to schedule anything for this weekend... but you can periodically check here:
http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/horseshoe-hammond/casino-misc/the-venue-detail.html

If anyone needs further info about the area, feel free to send me an email... Smiley

I just checked the Country Inn & Suites and rooms start at $117 + tax per night, I am more of a $69 a night Days Inn type (retired ya know) but I will wait for a recommendation from LadyFX. If it comes down to it I can stay in Marrillville, we have stayed there a few times and always feel safe + it is on the way home.

The final hotel information has been updated in the first post.  If there is interest in hotels in the Merrillville/Hobart area, let me know so we can do the research.  Also, there will be a sporting event at Valparaiso University the same weekend as the GTG, so hotel rates will increase closer to the date.  The rates listed are good if you make advanced reservations.

Another idea for an activity is the 49er drive in. I don't know if it is still open this late in the year but if it is the admission is only 7.00 per adult for 2 first-run films.

Just a thought.

Another idea for an activity is the 49er drive in. I don't know if it is still open this late in the year but if it is the admission is only 7.00 per adult for 2 first-run films.

www.49erdrivein.com

Just a thought.

Don't hate me, I got a new truck.........

Why would we hate you?  You still have the Avalanche! ........ Right?

Congrats!

We were thinking of this also, but like you said...don't know if they'll be open.  Also, the crap weather we get around here in the fall, I'll be surprised if it's NOT cold and rainy.

IT was our intention to have pics of the hotel room posted by now, however due to the flooding in the area it was impossible to get to the Bass Pro area from where we live.  The Borman Expressway was finally opened last night.  The hotel is right off the expressway, other roads to the area were also closed.  We were also busy for two days volunteering to help sandbag the town (in between working two jobs).
Traffic in the area is backed up due to all of the road closures and people are in a hurry trying to get around.  Yesterday LadyFX was running an errand for Scouting in Lansing, IL.  She was stopped at a red light when a Chevy Astro van ran into the back of the AV.  She was sore from her neck and shoulder, so they took her to the hospital to have her checked out.  She's OK, but sore.  The AV doesn't look to bad, I'm just concerned about mechanical and undercarriage damage.  We're taking it to the dealer today to start the estimate process.
So we are a little behind.  We'll update the America's Best Value Inn info as soon as we are able to, LadyFX will be resting up this weekend.

Thats a DIY project if your so inclined,  1.45 hours labor, easy stuff!  I doubt that there is any frame damage, but its good to have it looked at.

LadyFX said she kept her foot on the brake the whole time, the wheels were locked and the AV skidded forward 2-3 feet, I'm a little concerned about the transmission.  I drove it afterward, the brakes feel a little "mushy" and the alignment is off.  The other driver has insurance, so no need to DIY when the dealer will be paid to do it.

With this added information then, I'd say that the AV and its superior strength did its job!  From first glance at the damage it looks like a bumper tap! Maybe three miles an hour, but if it skidded 2 to 3 feet much more

Just got off the phone with LadyFX, the dealer estimated the "cosmetic" damage that I posted in the pics at $2300.00 (this includes the rear bumper, cladding on a quarter panel and cladding on the tailgate, and the hitch/receiver were damaged).
They still have to check the alignment, brakes, transmission, 4 wheel drive, stabilitrak, etc.

The Chevy dealer ran out of "loaner" cars.  They have a deal set up with the car rental down the street, and the other drivers insurance is already paying for it.
LadyFX is highly upset because the rental is a Mazda Roll Eyes

I would imagine "GM Goodwrench" labor is factored in the dealer estimate.

Thanks.
The guy at the dealer said that there was less damage to the AV because of the ball.  Actually it was avz66 from TX that recommended I put one on when we were at the '07 National GTG in SD.  He said he didn't tow either, but put one on in case he got hit.

Always with both shins, and of course with a fresh coat of grease on it after pulling the boat! Bruised shin, stained jeans.

Thanks for the info.....I guess I got a room, I just called and she took my name & phone number, I told her what kind of room that I needed. She said that was all she needed, she did not take my CC info or give me a confirmation number, when I ask her for one she just said I will make sure that you have a room..........think I will call back in a few days and try to confirm it myself.

Thanks, I will wait a while and call back to speak with her.

This has been resolved.  LadyFX just got off the phone with Connie.  She was very apologetic, she said it was not supposed to be handled this way.  Reservations should have a confirmation number.
Butch, your room is booked and your confirmation number is waiting for you.

THANKS! I was a little worried just because you said there was a collage ball game that weekend and rooms would sell out. I will call in a day or three and ask for Connie and get that confirmation number.

From the looks of this one, it will be mostly meeting other people with or without AV's, some old friends, some new friends, talking trucks and AV's in the parking lot, shopping time at the Bass Pro and surrounding shops, dinner, more talking, ogling others rides, what mods they have done, want to do, etc etc.

We changed our plans a little.........we are only staying one night, Saturday and will be at the Super 8 there in Portage. We did a car show last Saturday and Joan did not feel well after being out for a long day so I think we need to scale back just a little. I am sure that she will not enjoy the Bass Pro Shop as much as the Quaker Steak and Lube. We love that place........  So we will join you guys a little later in the day for some parking lot time and then the eating!  love

Sunday morning we may head east and then south and visit our son and his family just south of Peru Indiana on the way home.

LakeFX, I need to bow out of the GTG. We are juggling a tight schedule and have to plan my daughters b-day party that day.

My apologies to some of the members that were planning on staying at the America's Best Value Inn Portage.  Z66Butch had some problems securing a confirmation.  LadyFX just got off the phone with the manager, they did have a flood on the 1st floor and are down 5 rooms.  They are also housing people who lost their homes during the flood in the 2nd week of September.  I am deleting America's Best Value Inn Portage, IN off of the first post.  I can only suggest that those looking for hotels consult the list, and if you narrow it down I'll personally go to your hotel of interest and check it out.
Respectfully,

Please post if anyone would be interested in breakfast the next morning.  The amount of people will determine the location.  Thanks.
Also, if anyone will be staying the night before, I can point you in the right direction for restaurants.  Just let me know what you are looking for.  We have a Scouting function that evening, but depending on what time we are done, we might be able to meet up.  If anyone wants a point of contact, PM me and I'll send you a cell #.

Forgot to update.  The AV is back in service since about early last week.  They did a 4 hour tensile strength test on the frame.  Everything was confined to the cosmetic damage I posted.  LadyFX is still sore from her arm and shoulder area.  Good news is that xrays and mri's show no bone or nerve damage.  She has to start physical therapy on Friday.  I believe that if it wasn't for the size and strength of the AV, it would've been much worse.
While the AV was at the dealer, the other driver's insurance left us a message saying they were going to submit "their" estimate, which was about $1000 less than the dealer's estimate.  I wasn't sure what it meant, but I had an idea.  Their insurance estimate was with used replacement parts. Roll Eyes  The dealer explained that prior to the accident, the parts were new.  The body shop manager at Christenson Chevrolet in Highland, IN did an excellent job and got our AV the way it was prior to the accident.  I was a little apprehensive when I first drove it, but the ride was great and everything was aligned and "tight".

How did you guys do with the flooding/storms? The ditch is all gunked up, I was told by one of the marina guys to not even try to take my boat out, and I only draw about 14".

We can not make it out of the marina.  There is a sand bar at the end of the marina.  We are still enjoying it just spending the weekends on it.  It takes 3 foot to float us, we are on a 30 foot searay.  I just need to convince my husband that I need ambers before the gtg. Wave

No one laughs and everyone helps, that is why this place is so great. Now who wants to help me put ambers in my Burb, I hear it's a huge pain in the behind!!!

I have a 21' SeaRay but I keep mine on a trailer and launch out of the Portage Marina, all of the work and I only got out 5 times this year.

You'll fit right in with my stock '06 dark gray metallic cladded Z71, about the only thing I have is ambers & a couple club decals in the back window.
I was about the only stock AV at the '07 National GTG in South Dakota.  I got compliments on the paint job from other members, they were surprised when I told them it was stock.  I guess most of the club members are used to seeing the mods and forget what stock looks like.

Cool, what do i ask for when i go buy ambers Roll Eyes
You can pick them up anywhere, Kmart on 41 in St John, Walmart on 30 & 41 in Schererville.  They are yellow/amber replacement bulbs that usually come 2 to a pack.  I just get whatever brand is in stock, (GE, Sylvania) the part number is 3157/NALL (that stands for new amber long life).  The package may also say 3157/4157 NALL.
They go for about $3-$4 around here, don't go to an auto parts store, they'll charge double.
This link tells all about ambers:

Cool I am going shopping tonight Thumbs up!

Sylvania Silver Star Ambers are really cool, more expensive, brighter, and cool  Thumbs up!  They have a blue iridescent look when off and bright amber when on.

PN is 3157AST for Silver Star's

I have a set of standard 3157NALL Ambers I will give you if you want them.

How did you guys do with the flooding/storms? The ditch is all gunked up, I was told by one of the marina guys to not even try to take my boat out, and I only draw about 14".

I have my boat on the Burns ditch... EVERYTHING was whiped out east of the overpass.  Our boat was luckily tied up at the top point of our lift... so we got out with just a few slight scratches.

There is still a sandbar, both at the Portage Marina & Marina shores exit... and from what I understand, there's also one at the mouth to Lk. Mich.   Portage Marina has a dredger coming in November to clean things up.

As of 2 weeks ago, there were still submerged boats in the burns ditch... I know they had a 'sonar barge' go up and down the ditch... but I dont know yet if they've removed all the boats (im guessing they did... because of the EPA issues and such... )

Im just hoping that most of it will be passible by next season.

PS - Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the GTG.  Sad  I have SCUBA lessions that day. (were heading to Cozumel a couple weeks thereafter)

Hope you guys have fun!

It makes sense to go that route or go I-290 east to I-294 South to I-80 east.

I know they are a BIG group.  If they show this late, the restaurant may not be able to accommodate us.  I needed to know about that large a group when I first notified the restaurant.  I have to give a headcount soon.

If you take 355 would be easier to get off & on at Lagrange. Not real familiar w/ 294 & 80 either I only know of alot of merges in that area. If goin 294 let me know I can pick you guys up @ the toll just south of I-55? You'll have to call me though!!!!

America's Best Value Inn
1 King bed $75 a night (Senior $68)
2 double beds $51 a night (Senior $46)
*Senior=60 or older
No Pets
219-736-5100

Merrillville, IN
*5 room minimum group rate.

Super 8
2 full beds

Portage, IN 46368
*15 room minimum group rate.

Holiday Inn Express
2 queen beds or 1 king bed
$119 a night
No Pets
219-762-7777
2323 Willowcreek
Portage, IN 46368
*10 room minimum group rate.

Country Inn & Suites
2 queen beds or 1 king bed

$149 (suites)
No Pets
219-764-0021

There's a Shell gas station on Rt.45(LaGrange rd) just south of I-80. Actually its at the first red light can't miss it. Or if it's ealy I would suggest Fleckensteins bakery about 500 feet further south. Best pastries in the area.

Our daughter-in-law just sent me this email, I thought this was a good thread to share it in.

A lady was telling her son that she saw a man driving down the interstate, and a dog was hanging onto the tail gate for dear life.  She said if he hadn't been going so fast in the other direction she would have tried to stop him.

A few weeks later, her son saw this truck at the Bass Pro Shop in Daphne, Alabama!  It's a taxidermist! Talk about an eyecatcher!

IF DCA IS ATTENDING, I'LL NEED THEIR HEADCOUNT ASAP!  I'LL NEED THE FINAL HEADCOUNT FOR THE RESTAURANT TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2008!  I'M ROUNDING UP THE COUNT BY A FEW.  THE RESTAURANT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACCOMODATE US IF WE HAVE A LARGE GROUP ADD-ON AT THIS POINT!

***PLEASE CHECK THE ATTENDING LIST.  MAKE SURE I HAVE THE CORRECT NUMBER IN YOUR PARTY.  SOME OF YOU HAVE ALREADY LET ME KNOW AND I HAVE UPDATED THE LIST.  IF THERE IS JUST THE ONE NAME LISTED, THEN I AM COUNTING ONLY 1.  I'M GUESSING SOME OF THE SINGLE NAMES WILL BE BRINGING A SPOUSE, SO LET ME KNOW SO I CAN NOTE "+1".  ALSO IF YOU'RE NOT SURE IF YOU'LL HAVE AN EXTRA PERSON OR TWO, ADD THEM ANYWAY.  I'D RATHER "ROUND UP" THE HEADCOUNT.  I'LL BE GIVING THE HEADCOUNT NEXT WEEK.  THANK YOU.***

It will be Mark, myself, and Ross. (We'll need a booster seat for him).
