At SoCal AV Meet #3...the gang talked about planning to meet in late October or early November. An interest was expressed in heading out to the High Desert. I was asked to coordinate and put some ideas together. So...Ok Gang this is what I have so far....
Bring your AVs and family and we can meet in Cabazon, Ca. at the Dinosaurs which
are located off the north side of the 10 frwy in the a.m.
Dinosaurs in Cabazon, CA.
From the Dinos we can car
AV
an out to N. Palm Springs for a guided tour of the wind turbines given by Wind4Power and photo opportunities.
Wind4Power mentioned he might climb a turbine to take an aerial shot of the AVs. That should be a unique shot.
Wind Turbine in N. Palm Springs (Hwy 10 & 62)
If you are curious and would like more information on Wind Energy
in Southern California here is a great article with some good photos:
Winds of Change
After the tour of the wind farm we will head out to
Joshua Tree National Park
. There we can tour together and see the giant rock & boulder formations, joshua trees, scenery, etc. There are are also some trails where our 4x4 enthusiasts can go offroading, while us 2wheelers sight see elswhere. Then we can meet back up for a picinic in one of the designated picnic areas.
Scenic Photo at Joshua Tree National Park
Some people expressed interest in an overnight stay. I'm not sure if they wanted to camp overnight in the park or stay in hotel in Palm Springs.
(We can try to get a group rate for those that are interested in a hotel stay)
There are also group campsites available at
JTNP
.
Ok...there you have it...Who's game?
How about Saturday, Novemer 2, 2002.
We need some feedback here on a firm date and the possiblity of the overnight stay. I expect you will be hearing about this by email soon....but you can post here too...

Hey Cindy,
Isn't Cabazon where the outlet malls are with Barney's of New York?
I like your suggestions, you may also want to consider Idylwild if you are looking for other options!

C-Rod...
Yes, there is factory outlet mall in Cabazon right in that general area.
As for Idylwild...the last cruise (So Cal Meet #3) was a mountain drive. I think we were looking try something different this time.

Nice job Cindy...sounds like a great time
Put me and my wife down for the outing, with a definite for a camp out!
Is anyone familiar with the off-road conditions? I don't really want to do any serious rock-hopping, but some dirt road exploring would be great.
Count us in...

The family and I are going to take a cruise out to
JTNP
this coming
Saturday (Oct. 5) to scout things out:
...Take a look at the road conditions...
...Check out the campgrounds & picnic areas....
I think my family and I might pitch a tent and camp out in the park. My kids love to camp and the are just dyin' to roast marshmellows by campfire. It could be fun.
I will also take a look into hotels in the Palm Springs area...

I'm really starting to get pissed
, every last outing in So Cal I have been out of town or have plans to go out of town that cannot be changed. I was looking especially forward to this trip; it looks like it will be both interesting, exciting, as well as fun. I'm leaving on the 2nd for New York for a week on business = not happy about the schedule conflict. not happy at all....

We'd like to go and if there's group camping involved it'll make it even more attractive! We like hotels but camping in the fall sounds great.
PS: 4-wheeling sounds very very good to me

If overnight we would choose the hotel as opposed to

Hi Cindy, looks like I'm in
I'd like to camp, I'm trying to free my girls up from a previous committment so they can come also (they really want to come out and camp).
If this cruise happens, I'll be happy to supply albacore for a dinner barbecue (believe me, I have enough for everyone!). I also promised smoked albacore to XRover for an appetizer.

Hope your kids get to come along...We'll be bringing our kids along too. They are very excited about the whole idea. Bring on the BBQ!
Ken and I will be driving the route this weekend to check on all the details: road conditions, mileage, camping, etc.
So more detail to follow...

OK, Tunahunter! My wife suggested she could set up a "Salad Bar" on our tailgate for the BBQ, so we'll bring enough for how ever many sign up.
I hope they're OK with open fires there...we just came back from a trip and NOplace in CA or Oregon allowed anything except a Coleman-type stove. Hopefully by November we'll be OK for an open-fire campout
Looking forward to meeting you all

Sounds Good! We should be ok with fires since we'll be in the desert. Otherwise we'll make do with what we have.

Sounds great! I don't mean to sound like an alarmist, but as a desert-rat I can tell you fire can be an issue in the desert. We just lost 4 homes and 3500 acres here in Leona Valley, one ridge line from the Mojave.
The view out my front window is mostly burned brush.
This is from a Joshua Tree web site,
"..in 1999, the largest fire in Joshua Tree's history, the Juniper Complex fire burned 13,894 acres of slow-growing California junipers, pinyon pines, and Joshua trees. "
We will have to be a little careful. I don't know where we will drive/camp, it could be just rock and dirt (I'm sure there's lots of that out there) and we can not be concerned.
OK, I'm off my soap-box. I guess given the fire season we've had I'm still a little hyper-vigilant.
Let's hear it for rain. I bought my Av on April 17th, and have not driven it in the rain yet!!!

We will be definitely be camping in the designated camping areas. From what I understand every campsite will have a fire pit with grate. I'll check on this and fire info...
I'm going to see about reserving us a group campsite. There are several in the park that can accomodate 10 to 70 people... and 20 vehicles. I want to pick a good one and see it in person before I make reservations.
Looks like we got the ball rolling here....Yah!
I hope those that don't wish to camp or overnight in a hotel will still come and join us for the day!

John113972,
Actually we discussed Fresno, I go up there all the time.. I will be there on Oct 11th to Oct 15th. At our last meeting I mentioned going camping next spring at Dinkey Creek campground. We will see if there is enough interest in a camp trip. So it could happen..

That would be great the Dinkey Creek area is really a nice place for an event like that. I got about 5 buddies who have avalanches to. I think I could talk them into a trip like that. If you have some free time when your in Fresno let me know maybe we can meet and take a look at each others AV's it always nice to meet someone from the AV board.

Cindy:
Count us in. Mrs. Supermobile and myself will be
there.
Mrs. Supermobile and myself prefer not to sleep
in the bedslide.
Is anyone else prefering a hotel besides us?
How will that work out if we are in a hotel, and
everyone else is camping out?
Like how far is the park from Palm Springs or Palm
Desert, anyway?

. Still negoiating right now but it sure sounds good. Stephen and I did our first (well his) camp out at Joshua Tree and he really loved it. I always wanted to see those wind power generators up close too!
I'll keep the gang updated on my statis but keep me on the E-Mail list. Thanks

Sounds good to me, The thing is I start work at 0500 and can get off as early as about 0930. I'll have to check with the boss(at work, not at home
) but shouldn't have too much of a prob. I am in Riverside and am allready most of the way there compaired to you ( I think) I was hoping at least to make the looking at the wind towers. I've driven by them so many times I thought it would be cool to see them up close. It kinda depended on when the rest of the group was meeting at Cabazon and then leaving for the towers.
Let me know what your plans are when it gets closer to the the 2nd and we have a better idea.

Ok Gang... I sent out an email today with all of the cruise details. I hope you all got it ok.
Just in case I'm posting a copy of the email here.
Quote
Attention Southern California CAFCNA Members. This email contains the details of the next So Cal Cruise/Meet. It's kinda long so you might want to print it out. Please maximize this email to read it....
Date: Saturday, November 2, 2002
Location: Cabazon/ N. Palm Springs/ Joshua Tree National Park
Planned Activities: Meet in Cabazon at the Dinosaurs
Visit wind farm in N. Palm Springs & Photo Opps
Picnic & Tour of Joshua Tree National Park & Offroad Opp
FRS Radio: Channel 1/ Subchannel 0
Hello So Cal Members,
We plan to meet in Cabazon, CA. in the morning on November 2. Time to be determined by feedback. I think we should meet at 9 a.m unless there are any objections. We can meet a little later if the majority needs to....
I think it's important to get an early start so that we can get out to JTNP early enough so that we can all picnic, explore, rock climb, go offroading etc. The entrance fee into Joshua Tree NP is $10 and is good for 7 days. So those who will be camping or overnighting in a hotel can re-enter the park again on Sunday for no additional fee if they would like to...
Camping: Some of us plan on camping overnight. I have reserved 8
camping sites at Black Rock Canyon Campground. Each camp site
can accommodate 2 vehicles, 2 tents, and 6 people. So if necessary
we can double up and that would allow us 16 AV's. I hope everyone
is OK with that.
The fee for camping overnight is $10 bucks per campsite. I've already
paid the fees for the 8 sites I reserved. Those that
will be camping can reimburse me for the 10 bucks the day of the
cruise. I tried to get us a group site...but unfortunately every group site
in the park was already taken...all the way to Jan. 2003. Who knew?
Hotel Stay: Some wish to overnight in a hotel in Palm Springs, CA.
There are literally dozens and dozens of hotel chains in the area. So,
if you have a favorite hotel chain you prefer to stay in...I suggest
make your reservations with them.
After meeting in Cabazon, CA. and discussing our day...we will take off and cruise together for approx. 15 miles to the wind farm for a short tour and photo opps. From there...We will cruise together approx. 30 miles to the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. We can explore the park together or you can do your own thing if you want to... They have several very nice picnic areas in the park, all with plenty of parking. So bring a picnic lunch... Hidden Valley Day Use Picnic Area is perfect for our picnic.
For those of you who wish to do a little offroading....you'll have the chance to do so. This is just for you : Geology Tour Road: "This 18 mile, self guiding tour along a dirt road winds through some of the park's most fascinating rockscape. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended." There are also several other areas to go offroading.
If you don't want to camp or overnight in a hotel I hope you'll still come and get together with us for the day. I think it's gonna be alot of fun! I am really looking forward to seeing you all and meeting some of our new members!
Directions to Cabazon, CA:
Take the 10 Fwy towards Palm Springs. Exit Main ST. in Cabazon.
Turn Left (N) on Main St. go over the freeway to the Dinosaurs which
are located behind Dennys.
If you miss us at Cabazon... Take the 10 Fwy to Hwy 62 and take a
left at the first street off of the freeway (Dillion RD.) Wait there at the
bus stop for the group to come down off the hill. If you have a FRS radio
turn it to Channel 1 and you may be able to contact us. The only way
to tour the wind turbines is to be in the group. So try not to be late....
I'm thinking we should be leaving the hill no later than 10:30ish...
If you want to meet us in JTNP you will take the 10 fwy to hwy 62
towards Yucca Valley. In Joshua Tree you will take a right on Park Blvd.
and enter the West Entrance to the park. Then you can try to reach us
on the radio. We will try to stay on channel 1 but we may have to
switch depeding on radio traffic. I think a large group of AV's will be hard
to miss.
Hope to see lots of ya there! ...I want us all to have a great time!
If you have any questions feel free to email us at Wind4Power@aol.com.

Here's a link to a few printable maps of Joshua Tree National Park.
Joshua Tree National Park Maps
The Adobe Acrobat PDF map is nice. It's identical to the one in the brochure they give you at the park entrance.

I'd like feedback from those like myself who will be attending:
Some are planning on bringing FRS two-way radios, which are good for communicating for a distance of
a couple of miles.
But for longer distances, I am wondering if those who like myself have onstar with personal calling - would you want to private message each other now with your Av's phone number too?
Maybe someone gets lost or is running late or something, it would be a way to communicate.
I would be willing to give my Av's phone number to a fellow Av club member.
Thanks.
Supermobile
P.S. If nothing else I am curious how many in our chapter subscribe to the personal calling feature.
Do you have it?
I always make calls from my vehicle anyway, so I cancelled my cell phone!

SoCalCindy,
In case the emails don't make it: Count us in on the Nov. 2 meet. We have a Z71, so we'd really enjoy the opportunity to do the off-road tour. Put us down for a camping spot at Joshua Tree. We have an 11'x11' tent, and will have at least 3 people, possibly 4 or 5 if my sons have friends who can come. Looking forward to a fun meet! Thanks for all the time you've put into organizing it. We really appreciate it!
Supermobile,
Love your chatting graphic--its one of the best at the site.
(Looks like me at night way too often lately, though.)
We don't have OnStar or an FRS radio. Will have to get by the old-fashioned way: CB or cell phone!

Hi SoCalCindy:
Looks like a real event is brewing
We may have a change in plans, so you better put me and my wife as a "?" for camping...we may have to head out late afternoon
If anyone out there wants to use a FRS radio, I'll have two with me and will be happy to loan out one for the day...let me know when we meet in the AM.

It looks a go
for Stephen and I for the trip, and we WILL be camping
The only problem for me is that I do have to work that day. I am still negoating with my supervisor as to when I will be able to get away from work. I am really hoping to be able to see
the wind towers but will at least be there for camping
.
I will update my ETA for the meeting areas as I am able to find out.

Sure does sound like this is shaping up...I'll be bringing my daughters (5 and 9), they can't wait to camp. Odds are good that I'll also have another Av (and it's owner) with me. A friend from work, who knows about this site but thinks he's too busy to be involved
. I think him and his fiance will be tagging along - they have a blue Z66.
Also, my offer to provide Albacore Tuna steaks (and maybe some yellowtail) for dinner for all on Sat. night still stands. Does that sound ok with everyone?

Count me in! I'll be bringing my 8 yr old boy, my friend and his 12 yr old boy.
We'll try to grab some firewood before we come out, as there's none in the desert. We'll also bring (dust off!
) our climbing gear. It's been several years since we've been out there, so it will be fun to get up on the rock again Friday, and Sat pm (we'll be camping there Fri night, too.)
To all the campers it's a good idea to bring some water. There's none to be had in JTNP proper, though it is available in our campground area (Black Rock) from what I've read*.
And we have to watch the kids around the cactus. There's lots, and lots of types. It's also a good idea to inspect the tents and bedrolls for scorpions before turning in at night. Not trying to scare anyone here, just pointing out what's out there. Common sense + knowledge=a good time.
I only wish we had a batch of home brew to share with all. We're about to start one up; bad timing on our part
We'll bring the last 7 or 8 of the most recent batch for everyone though.
Re communications, anyone who wants my OnStar # when we're out there is welcome!
Thanks for all your hard work, Cindy.
This should be fun!

Hope you decide to join us RC.
Just wanted to let folks know about the campground us campers will be staying in....
Black Rock Canyon Campground.
This campground is by reservation only. There are 100 campsites.
The campground has running water and flush toilets.
A real luxury out there.
I have 8 sites reserved which can accomodate 2 vehicles, 2 tents, and 6 people per site.
The campground is a part of JTNP but is located outside the park entrance. Here is a description from NPS.
"
Black Rock Canyon...
Located in the northwest corner of the park, the road to Black Rock Canyon dead-ends at Black Rock Campground. Campsites are located on a hillside at the mouth of the canyon surrounded by Joshua trees, junipers, cholla cacti, and a variety of desert shrubs. Spring blooms usually begin with the Joshua trees in late February followed by shrubs and annuals through May.
This quiet, family campground is a good introduction for first-time campers. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring with rest rooms and water nearby. If you forget to bring your firewood, shopping facilities are only five miles away in the town of Yucca Valley. Campsites vary in size and can accommodate both tents and RVs. A day-use picnic area and dump station are also available. For horse owners, a separate area is provided for overnight camping or staging a ride.
Campers register and pay camping fees at the nature center located in the middle of the campground. The staff at this small visitor center can help plan your hikes and sightseeing. Maps, books, nature guides, and childrens activity books may be purchased there.
The hills behind the campground offer a variety of hiking trails including the Hi-View Nature Trail. The interpretive guide for this trail, available at the nature center, identifies the vegetation along this scenic 1.3-mile walk. For those looking for longer trails, Eureka Peak, Panorama Loop, and Warren Peak take hikers to ridge lines overlooking the often snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio. The trailhead for a 35-mile section of the California Riding and Hiking Trail is located at Black Rock. Backpackers can register at the backcountry board here for overnight wilderness trips.
But you dont have to hike to enjoy the Black Rock Canyon area. Wildlife sightings are frequent in the campground. Visitors often encounter ground squirrels, jackrabbits, and cottontails. Frequent bird sightings include cactus wrens, Gambels quail, great horned owls, jays, and roadrunners. A serious birder might be rewarded with a glimpse of a Scotts oriole, pinyon jay, or LeContes thrasher. More elusive species such as bobcat, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, desert tortoises, and mule deer have all been seen in the area. As the sun sets, listen for the singing of coyotes living on the outskirts of the campground.
Please do not feed wild animals in Joshua Tree National Park. People food is unhealthy for them and they can become aggressive and harm you."
Since this is desert...of course we'll have to watch out for critters and bring plenty of water. Thanks for bringing that up RC.

Hey TunaHunter,
Your offer for the Albacore is what sealed it with the wife to go.
We have a little charcoal grill, which I am sure will be better than trying to use the fire-pits. But won't be big enough for everyone. Hopefully some more come out on the trip.
Can't wait for Nov. 2nd.
Things for all the kids to do? Cin, did the area look bicycle friendly? Alex wants to bring his bike.

Looks like we're going to have a nice crowd for the cruise and camping too... and its still early! Cool!
You can check the post on page 6 of this thread to see who plans on coming...I've been updating it regularly.
There's been discussion about having a BBQ dinner at the campground Sat. Sounds like a great idea to me
TunaHunter:
said he'd like to bring Albacore steaks and maybe some yellowtail.
SoCalCindy:
I'll bring a bunch of soda and some hotdogs & buns for the kids. I'll also bring plates, napkins, and eating utensils.
Supermobile:
[/u] We will bring chips and cookies.
Maybe someone can bring some kind of a salad, maybe a dessert, etc. or whatever you like. Let us know if you'd like to bring something by posting or PM me...and I'll keep updating this post.
I also will be bringing a small travel size propane grill along.

We never thought of that idea while we were out there. I know that there are trails specifically for mountain biking and stuff. But, I'm not sure if thats what you had in mind. But, he can ride around in the campground areas for sure. My kids would like to bring their bikes too...but I'm not sure if we'll be able to fit 'em all in the AV...we'll see.

Openminds, good idea on the charcoal grill....I'll bring mine also, and it's a small one as well. The good thing is the Tuna only takes a few minutes to cook, so we can grill it in batches.
I'll try to fit my girls bikes in as well.
I'll be out of town all next week with limited access to a pc, so if I don't reply to anything don't worry...I'm still a go for the 2nd.
See ya,
Chuck.

We will bring chips and cookies for everyone.

We are driving up from Vista Friday night and staying in Palm Springs so that we will only have a short hop
to the Dino's meeting place.

We just bought a pair of FRS radio units last night
at Costco.
Since we can only use one of the units during the meet, we would be happy to loan the other one to
anyone who doesn't have an FRS, who might want to be able to chat amongst the other Avalanche drivers.
Just let me know.

Kool map, thanks.
Hmmm, I was just looking at that photo
of that long-necked dino earlier....wondering...., let's see, if we get four Avalanches to back up to the big
boy, one for each of his feet, do you suppose he could climb aboard and we could give big barney a ride out of there?
Nah..
He probably enjoys it as he is, having people walk around inside of him and shop.
Forgive me, my imagination ran a little wild there.

While I was getting some directions on mapquest today...I noticed that in addition to street maps...you can also view aerial maps of the location you are looking for... I thought it was kinda neat! Of course I had to see if I could locate and aerial photo of my neighborhood...and sure enough it was there. Again...I say Neato!
So anyway...to match the street map above, here is an aerial photo from mapquest of our meet location at the Dinos in Cabazon...

I just emailed our Southern California Chapter an update by email. Just in case...I'm posting it here too...
SoCalCindy
Quote
Hello Southern CA AV Fans!
Well, as of tommorrow...Our next get together is only 10 days away!
So here is a recap on the details:
So far...it looks like we have 15 AVs attending this event. This email is kinda long too...So you might want to print it out. There is an ongoing discussion thread about the cruise in the meets/cruise forum on the AV club website. Specific directions & maps are posted there as well. Bring your FRS radio if you have one, if you don't...no worries...plenty have offered to share their extras. We'll try Channel 1 Subchannel 0.
Starting Point:
Saturday November 2, 2002
Arrive 9:30 a.m.
Dinosaurs in Cabazon, Ca.
50900 Seminole Dr.
Cabazon, CA. 92230
I will be in Cabazon at 8:00 a.m. There are plenty of restaurants in the area if anyone wants to arrive early for breakfast. Once we're all gathered we'll head out approx. 15 miles to N. Palm Springs for a tour of wind turbines & photo opps.
After the wind park tour we'll cruise approx. 30 miles to Joshua Tree National Park and enter at the West Entrance for activities and lunch. So please bring a lunch for yourself & family. It is $10 to enter the park and the admission is good for 7 days. You will need to bring your own drinking water.
Optional Camping & Potluck BBQ
I have 10 Camp Sites reserved at Black Rock Canyon Campground. Each site can accommodate 2 Vehicles, 2 Tents, 6 people. The campsite fee for the night is $10.
These are the folks who said they plan to camp out for sure:
SoCalCindy/Wind4Power, Tunahunter, MagicMtnDan, openminds, Avalanche Bob, bshef, King_Avalanche, RCinSoCal, Aegis ...and we have plenty of room for more. So those who haven't decided for sure. Just let me know when you can.
Potluck BBQ Saturday evening at Black Rock.
The idea for a BBQ was brought up and several people have volunteered to bring something for a BBQ Dinner...enough for everyone.
Tunahunter:
Tuna Steaks and maybe some yellow tail.
SoCalCindy/Wind4Power:
Plates & Eating Utensils, Hot Dogs and Buns.
Supermobile:
Cookies & Chips for everyone.
If you would like to bring something...let me know what you plan to bring or post it in the So Cal Cruise thread on the club website.
It gets pretty darn chilly at night in the desert, so plan on bringing a jacket and warm bedding if you plan on camping.
I've picked up a few things to give away for fun --for prizes or drawings or whatever.
If you have any ideas or would like add something to the pot...please feel free!
Several members have let me know that they would like to share their cell phone numbers and OnStar numbers with the group. This is so we can get in contact with each other if necessary or in case of emergency, etc. If you would like to share your # with the group you can email it to me privately or Message me on the AV club website. Be assured, I will only share the numbers with those who plan on attending the cruise.
Not long till we Go! I'm looking foward to It! Hope To See Ya There!
If you have any comments, suggestions, ideas or questions...just send me an email or post it on the AV club site.
Cindy & Ken Hamilton aka SoCalCindy & Wind4Power
Please Note
the change in start time. We decided to change it to 9:30 a.m. to make it a little easier on those coming a long distance. (Which is most of you
)

I'll have my pass side set up that way. Done it before and works fairly well. Trick is to buy the plastic shoebox size plastic container at K-Mart and make some blocks of ice. This was suggested in that old post.
Blocks last much longer than cubes...
We'll be out there Fri afternoon so the ice will be down a bit by Sat am.
Anyone else playing hooky (sp?) on Fri, and camping out Fri nite too? I'm bringing a bunch of mixed hardwood for the campfire, and will have extra....
(I'll be a Lt Pewter av with the Z66 stickers removed, and a black, soft-sided cargo carrier on top of the cargo panels... And, of course, a club decal - in the rear window).
If not, we'll meet you all on Sat am.

Hey, anyone wanna hook up with us (and OpenMinds) as we cruise out from the San Fernando Valley? It'd be fun to carAVan out there together.
I can't put ice and beverages in my side compartments until I clean them out - they're coated with dust from the Death Valley trip. I'm kinda hoping for some rain today/tomorrow so my Av's underscarriage gets wet down - the frame, etc., has dust on it too.
I'm not sure what we're gonna bring for the barbecue. We usally cook good stuff - steaks or something - I'm sure we'll bring some extra stuff to contribute to the pot luck. Maybe a side dish or two.
Make sure you bring some firewood if you have room! Marshmallows too (and some marshmallow cooking sticks). Don't forget to turn your FRS radios to channel 1 subcode 0.
If you wanna hook up with us e-mail me or OpenMinds and we'll set something up so we meet along the route to Cabazon. Feel free to call me on my cell phone: 805-490-4866
Don't forget your flashlights, lanterns, towels, soap, utensils/plates, etc.
Who's gonna do a hack (mod) when we're there?
See you next Saturday!

OK, then we'll bring a big ol' pot of Chili! Make it at home, and pack it in ice till Sat nite....
You gonna use Blazing Saddle Beans in the chili? It'll be trumpet time around the campfire!

I'd suggest enjoying the nuances of Tunahunter's offering before eating this fire!

Here are some links to Camping Checklists that might be useful. Lots of duplication, of course, and many things you won't need, but a review of these might prompt you to bring something you might have otherwise forgot or overlooked...

OK gang here's my idea
....I allready threw this to Cindy but what do the rest of you think....I was thinking
of bringing my propane 3 level BBQ along for cooking purposes? much easier than frying your arm on a fire pit... Tuna can't swim off here
I'll check back for input.
I will not be making the meeting at the Dinos but will be catching up with the group @ Joshua Tree We will be doing the camping thing..For those who have interest in the AV tent and haven't seen them guess what .....
You'll be able to see mine...

Though bringing a full size BBQ would be convinient for everyone else, how easy is it gonna be for you? You need to lug it around, unload, reload, carry around on Sunday, lug it home, unload it at home. etc....
I for one was planning on bringing a small Charcoal grill, as were others. I have two huge bags of charcoal left over from a company BBQ (Yesterday) I was going to bring. Let's just get this ironed out before next weekend so we don't have to many BBQs and not enough food. LOL

Well, it wouldn't be much of a mod*, BUT, I'll be bringing with me 3 or 4 sets in Charcoal Grey and the same in Beige of "Avalanche stickers" to cover those ugly sun visor warnings, from Rich Davis, owner of Streamlinedesign.com:
http://www.streamlinedesign.com/avalanche/interior.html
I contacted him a few weeks ago when I saw him mentioned in a thread re sun visors. He just recently put them up on his site for sale ($15/pr). I mentioned to him our upcoming desert cruise and that I could show off my set and perhaps drum up some interest for him
. I volunteered to try to sell some if he was interested, and lo and behold, he sent me several sets.
He offered me $3 for each pr that should sell, but since I don't want to make a dime off any of my new friends in the CAFCNA, that means, if you're interested, you could pick up a pair of these next weekend for $12, not the regular $15, with no shipping and no waiting for the mail!
To be clear, I'm NOT a sales rep for these; just trying to be a nice guy and help this fella out in case anyone would like a pair. I'll be sending any $ and the unsold sets back to him on Monday, after the cruise. Just another benefit of coming along on the JT cruise
*(I don't suspect we'll see too many people putting in a Hypertech unit, Sun am while parked in the middle of the desert!
)

RC...
I've visited that site a half a dozen times but just haven't plunked my money down for a set cause I couldn't make up my mind what color I wanted. I'll buy a set from ya at the meet 4 sure.
Thanks for arranging that...
I almost forgot...
We went out to the desert yesterday...the wind was blowing pretty good. All the turbines were turning. I hope there is a a little bit of wind when we all go out there...It sure makes things more interesting.
The temperature was in the mid 70 in N. Palm Springs and mid 60's in Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree. I checked the weather forecast for next Sat/Sun. and it looks like it will be about the same. Nightime temps are in the mid 40s. Make sure to bring warm clothing for the night time temps.

I hope ya'all like Macaroni Salad - that's what we're bringing thanks to my wife Denise who is going to make a bunch of it for the Pot-Luck Barbecue. She makes a mean Mac Salad so come hungry!
Hey Cindy, I'm sure you provided it but what's the plan for Saturday and Sunday - do you have an itinerary for us? (I'm at work and don't have access to the files on my home PC).
As for the home-style grille - I think it's a great idea but it can be tough for everyone to cook their own food on one grille (too many chefs, not enough grilles
) so we're bringing out own camping barbecue with self-lighting briquets (no need to lug the lighter fluid).
We're also bringing our Coleman camping stove too so we can cook up some stuff (especially our bacon and eggs breakfast Sunday AM).
Anyone want to hook up on the drive out to the stoned dinosaurs?

To those whom I'm exchanging e-mails with re Sun Visors...If, when you finally see them in person, you don't care for them for any reason, don't feel committed to buy a pair! Just say "no thanks". No problem
(Although I can't see any reason you wouldn't like them...)
And is it just me, or do some of the recent postings to this thread make you think we should update the name of this trip to: BBQ's Galore!

Ok, maybe not the greatest idea, but let me shoot it at ya.
For my dash, I was not to interested in the changeable faceplates or changing the cluster all together. But I did want a different color display. I installed LED bulbs. This involved a minor "modification" of the old bulbs (destroying them) to install the LEDs. It came out great and mine now lights up blue. And the LEDs will not burn the blue coloring off as this is the wavelength of light emitted.
I do not have any more blue LEDs but do have enough RED to do another. The result would be no change during the day, but at night your cluster lights up red instead of the white. We could do this as a mod to someones Avalanche while we are camping Saturday Night. Maybe even Photo op it for other members to see how easy it is. The cost of the bulbs would be 5.00 (Help me pay for my camping spot) and the labor is free. Wait till you see how easy it is.
Now, the hard part is to who's Avalanche. I would say first to respond, but that would not be fair to the folks that can't get here in time, heck, maybe no one wants to do it. But I am sure we could work it out.
Im just tossing this out as something to do.

Very cool idea Jonathan. I may be interested but I'd like to wait til I see yours
to see how it looks.
One reason I might not do it is my 2003 Av has a whole bunch of lights all over the instrument panel (and there are MANY of them - on the steering wheel, etc.) and a greenish color (radio display, HVAC display). I would like to see what yours looks like.

Sounds good Dan, the one thing I should mention as you did, this will not change the rest of the lights in the vehicle, only the cluster. I am in the process of digging up the required components to do the rest. (A/C controls, headlight controls etc..) The problem is most of those lamps are soldered on the board which will require a little more work, but once I have it figured out it should be easy.
Everyone will be able to see mine. During the day it is very difficult to see, but at night it is such a cool glow of blue.

LED Mod
Oh yeah, I should note: Even though you are breaking out your bulbs it does not mean your stuck with it. You just need to buy 5 more 194PC bulbs. (Like 194 but with socket attached.) It literally takes 5 minutes to change them out when you have both sets.

All,
Do we (Cindy?) have a list of participants so we can e-mail the list and get people revved up? Or how about e-mailing the entire SoCal list to see about capturing any last-minute signups?
Let's get this thing going and how about hooking up for the drive out? Anyone care to meet on the 10 freeway or elsewhere to carAVan out there?

OK, regarding the propane BBQ I'll leave it at home. I have hauled it around before and it does come in handy
sometimes. The blue lights..
.I gotta see those 'cause I just changed all my dash lights to blue. I also have annother chrome dash piece to show off, I won't say where it is
but it looks very cool. Matches the billet knobs very well. Looking foward to Sat. So is Stephen,

Well OK then. That's it for me. My party of 4 will be heading out early tomorrow for some time on the rocks in JTNP, then camping at Blackrock, Fri pm. Hopefully we'll wind up in the same spot as the group area is planned for so we don't have to move the tent.
I'm dying to try it out. It's ridiculously big; an ebay deal I couldn't pass up
Got the warm clothes packed for that Sat chili nite, and looking forward to meeting everyone. We'll probably be the only group heading West-wardly to Cabazon Sat am. See you at the dinos! (You can preview what one of those little fellas looks like by clicking on the attachment, above).
Till then....

RC... that pic was too funny I had to shrink it down and post it...

Page 9? Did I miss page 9?
Damn it Jim.....
Actually, you missed the orig post on Page 7, too. Oh well, whose counting?
Gosh, it was fun meeting a bunch of the club members on this outing! Many thanks to Cindy and Ken for arranging it all, and providing access to the turbines. And the kids; we had what, over a dozen or so - they had a blast! We had probably the best campground for a group like us in the whole Park (I've stayed at most of 'em.) And on a personal note, it was fun to visit JT again after about 9 years and see all the improvements/changes that have occurred since it changed from Monument to Nat'l Park status...
Oh, BTW, don't know if there was anyone else interested, but I've one set (in Beige) left of the sun visor warning stickers. (Reads Avalanche accross it in outline form, as opposed to bold, solid letters). If not. I'll return that pr to Streamlinedesign.com later this week*...
Only question now is where is the next "cruise", and will it be a two-nite campout? Oh, and was it finally decided that the plural of Avalanche is........General Motors? (Thanks, Dan).
Later, everyone.
*Update: Last set returned Nov 8, 2002. To view them, go to:

They look terrific!
