                                                             Summer Kickoff 2009   June 7-14

Flyineagle's family and myself and Lu will be camping at Eby Pines RV park and campground the week of June 7 th thru the 14th.  All week long we will be available for cruising around looking for trouble, lol.   Saturday the 13 th we will have several things going on should you wish to join us!  Camping cabins are available, book early if you so desire!
Come for a week, or a day!

There is an abundance of things to do in the area, here of which I will list just a few:
Menno-Hof  here you will find the history of the Mennonites and the Amish as their age old story unfolds, more than just a museum for sure.

The Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market The midwests largest outdoor flea market, there is an antique auction on Wednesdays with up to ten rings going simultaneously.

Come and see the stunning collection of Hudson, Essex and Terraplane automobiles housed inside the Shipshewana Town Center.  Another trip down memory lane for some of us!

Escape with the family to Splash Universewith over 100,000 gallons of water for you pleasure, duel vortex water slides, hot springs, adult hot tub, lil' squirt pool.... sure to fun

There are an abundance of restaurants in the area, I kinda prefer the down home type ones instead of the big giant ones, lol.  We will post a eatery of choice before Fri for Saturday.

Bread Box Bakery where you can watch the Amish making breads cookies and whatever, the huge cinnamon rolls I think is what I'll be watching, lol.

Clear Spring Restaurant  a wonderful new restaurant located within the Splash Universe Resort Hotel.  Buffet style serving, Amish favorites and much more

Deutsch Kase Haus  Local Amish farmers bring there milk here.  Watch cheese making then sample the wares, shop for dozens of varieties.

There are also numerous bed and breakfasts in the area if you so desire, or there are also several motel/hotels in the immediate area.

Super8 being one of them.

QUESTIONS?

Location: Emporia, Indiana

Joined: Sep 2002

Didit was asking me about putting a banner in the thread (not in the sig) so I have been practicing.......

BUT, so not to be to far off topic, yes we are interested in at least coming up for a lunch or dinner, so when you start a list put us on it please!

OK, now back to the banners, I am assuming that they are OK just as pictures are in any thread because we are not spaming but rather showing our upcoming GTG's. I made each one a link back to the thread about the GTG and then saved the code in a file that I can paste in any post that I make. It is not automatic like the sig is but it is a way to get more than one banner in a post. I don't plan on putting it in every post that I make but will add it from time to time if it turns out that it is OK to do this.

I am going to point an moderator to this thread and check with them to see if it is OK. If so and anyone wants more detailes, PM me (so we don't hijack the thread any more).

WE ARE HAVING GTG'S!

Click a banner for more information.

tried to get me to go down there for years now. So we are definitely interested in this and will get with you when the
time gets closer. It would be just a day trip for us to so maybe we can coronate BigC  and Shels Land to pick a day  Thumbs up!

I don't think we will be able to make this one.  It is the weekend before our oldest son's Graduation Open House and will probably be spending the weekend getting the house and yard ready for the party.

If the house and yard are ready (not likely) we might be able to do a day trip.

I was in Shiphewana on Memorial Day Monday.  They were packed! Much busier than I had ever seen the place in a number of years of going up on that holiday Monday.  Joel, from Windsong kites, said the first two weeks in may were completely dead.  They were concerned about the bottom dropping out.  The week before Memorial day, he said that he sold out the inventory he had reserved for two or more weeks.  He was too busy to even sit down for those two weeks.  He wasn't sure what the change was.

Hopefully you will find fully stocked vendors during your visit!  Say hi to Joel when you pass his booth in the Flea market.  He is easy to spot as he normally has a kite up near gate 12.

There are three weeks where the flea market is open on Mondays as well.  Labor day, Memorial day and the 4th of July. They even encourage people to show up on those days,as the crowds are usually smaller.  We try to go on those Mondays to beat the crowds, but it didn't work that well this year.

Sorry I can't make it to that GTG

I have other commitments that day

The combiner is from Helroaring.  Google them.  The website is a bit dated but the equipment is good and gets good reviews around the gret internet highway.

Good luck.

Were in sites number 81, 82, 83 and I just found out the Cheese Factory does not do Sat cheese making, lol. They are open for purchasing though!  So were open for an activity of sorts if you got any ideas.   Yes I know there is all kinds of shopping, lol.

Ok, hows this, a trip to the Bread Box bakery, for a delectable delight, then to the Car Museum there in Shipshewana, then to the Wanna Cup diner for late lunch, early supper?

Well, there is the new Farmer's Market that just opened up late last year.
It is at US 20 & SR 19.
I think it is open on Thursday & Friday.
You have got to see the Big @ss fan.
Very impressive.
Good food in the food court too.

You guys are eating at the Town Haus?
It is ok, but Hilltop is the bomb.
All you can eat fish and salad bar.
Their pies are homemade.

The Mediterrainian Garden at 20 & 13 is really good too.

Actually due to the cheese factory not making cheese on Saturdays, I think we'll meet in the parking lot of the Bread Box bakery at 11 am Sat morning, then go to the town hall Hudson Car Museum, then off to the Wanna Cup restaurant after that for lunch or early dinner , your choice, lol.    There are many things to do if you want to be in the area earlier or later thats for sure.  If you would like you can meet us at the campground however there is a 5 dollar a day visitor charge, grrrrr.   Hey Flyineagle picked the campground, hahaha.  I'll use my charm and see if we can get that waived for AV drivers, lol.   Links to the bakery and museum can be found in the first post!   There is no site for the Wanna Cup, however it is a Amish Style eatery, just much more quaint and not as commercial as like the Essenhaus!   Should there be any changes to this intinerary I will have the laptop with me and post up as soon as possible.   Make sure to check in Fri if any changes have been made, you never know, after I get up there might find something more worthwhile to the group.   I gotta see this fan, lol.

OK......... No pictures

and we need the story also!

FYI anyone traveling from the south to this GTG, the best gas prices are in Warsaw Indiana along highway 15 gas is $2.76 per gal. It is $2.87 in Bristol and Shipshewana. (according to Gas Buddy)

Mike, did you get in that storm on your way up?? They were saying 60MPH winds and hail in the Wabash/Huntington area around noon or a little later.....would not be fun pulling a travel trailer in 60 MPH winds!

Storm, whew what a storm, blew us into another county kinda like Dorothy and Molly!  The wicked witch was to my right also hehehehehe.  But we managed to survive.  I have a pic of just a few minutes after noon, we had to take a break for a few and rest  up for  the rest of our journey northward to Shipshewana.  Beware that IN 15 is under heavy construction, actually the road has disappeared at IN 20.  Dale and myself went into town this evening and chatted with Walt and Sharon for the better part of an hour, we are meeting up tomorrow and going to the cheese factory then off to the flea market to browse around.  Funny thing is Dale and Scott tagged their AV in the parking lot of the flea market today!

yea, yea, yea, when you stop in at McD's I know that Molly is hungry!! Cool! "Daddy get me a hamburger PLEASE"    Thumbs up!

I think that we will just take 69 up to 33 and over. I did reserve a room south of Ft Wayne for Saturday night, if we are up to it we will stay there and then visit our son and his family over in Bunker Hill on Sunday. If we are to wore out we can cancel the motel and go straight home......

How crowded is it up there this year? Do we have some good parking for the museum and bakery?  love

OK they finally got the WiFi issue resolved, I think, lol.

Parking is good at the bakery and at the Museum, plenty of it, some things are crowded some are not!

Glad your going to be able to make it Dave!

About nine or ten we will still be at the campground I'm sure, its only  a few minutes drive to the bakery at 11.

Walt and Sharon did not make it to the Cheese Factory because Sharon got lost in the Flea Market, hehe.
What an awesome place though, bustling with locals and tourists alike, all kinds of cheese, you could actually eat lunch there just by sampling this and that, lol.   Yes Butch I got you some of your favorite!

here are a few shots of breakfast and the cheese shop

Yea we had breakfast, just quiet and cozy though, no papperazzi allowed this am. Yea we had rain yesterday, started about 6 am and finished up about 6 pm and then the sun came out for about an hour, lol, grrrrr.  Today we went to the American Farmers Market where they sell the worlds largest "jelly beans".  Plus fudge and more stuff! Stopped at Penquin Point for lunch and had a tenderloin, very tasty but not near as big as down south.  Went to a couple of surplus places and saw a HUGE roll of 3m double sided tape, told Dale wish they had one about half that size, lol.  Stopped by a yard sale and guess what, found one about half that size for a buck, the bargain of the day, wooohoooo, just chillin at the camp site gettin ready to grill up some brats.   See ya in the am

Looks like your having fun wish we where still there  Sad
Hear are some photos we took

You didn't have to leave on a count of us.......... Cool!

Ahh the Penquin Point, I remember them well. Our local one closed several years ago. I never understood why they built where they did, they were on 38th street well west of where the strip of other restaurants were located and never did the big business like most others in town......but they had the Big Wally so we had to get over there once in a while!

Wow what an awesome week, I want to thank Flyineagle and family for camping with us for the better part of a week, and those that came to visit!

Underwood - Scott and Jamie, hope your nose is feeling  better by now!
Destroyerofu2 for coming out Fri and Sat with his wife Vickie
Troy and his wife Jessica - Fri and Sat
BluePig - Kevin and his wife Jo
Butch and Jomama
Sunburst05 and Tammey
Walt and Sharon

Throughout the week we had 19 people and 8 AV's for this GTG!  It's you guys that make it a true Avalanche Family!  A special thanks to Destroyerofu2, when it was noticed that Bluepig did not have ambers yet, I dug through my modding boxes and came up with a pair of bulbs, having a little trouble with those danged cladded AV's, John (destroyer) being a recent newbie himself, pitched right in got the ambers in and then on to the all four on high mod, lol.  What a guy, woohooo you rock!  Talk about helping a brother out , this is a prime example of the AV family for sure!

Tammey and had a great time, just wish it could have lasted longer. Here are a few I took while up there. Some of the vehicles represented some great artwork and craftsmanship.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   And here are some pics of the local Omish trasportation.

On the way to Shipshewana we passed through the town of Churubusco, Indiana. We noticed a lot of turtle items, there was a shopping center called turtle shops, they has cement turtles on the street corners and we saw a sign calling Churubusco "Turtle Town USA" Well we collect turtle items and were wondering how it got that name so today I looked it up:

In 1949, Churubusco attained worldwide attention when an enormous turtle was spotted at Fulk Lake. The owner of the lake was determined to trap the turtle and the hunt brought thousands of people to this tiny community in the hopes of seeing this monster. Reporters from all around the Midwest descended upon the town to try to get the scoop on the capture of "Oscar". Gail Harris, on whose farm the turtle was spotted, employed the aid of scuba divers, deep-sea gear, and even went as far as trying to pump the lake dry. But Mr. Harris fell upon ill health and was unable to get this goal achieved. Oscar was rumored to be at least the size of a car top. Oscar managed to elude all efforts to capture him (even bringing in a giant female sea turtle), and to this day his disappearance is still a mystery.
Oscar, however, does live on in memories, and is commemorated each year with a four day Turtle Days celebration. Thus, Churubusco is world renown as TURTLE TOWN, USA.

On the way home we stopped in the Churubusco town park for a rest, here is a picture of the entrance to the park.........

Again, thanks we had a great time!
