Congrats on the new AVYpurchase and Welcome to the club Welcome!
I know you can make the controls work but sadly I can't help with that but I'm sure someone will pipe in quickly with your solution. Lot's of great advice & tips here.

You will need a harness such as the ones sold at Pac-audio.com or Crutchfield.  I think Best buy and those type places usually carry some as well.

It will depend on what head unit you have
What year AV
Whether you have a bose or non-bose system from the factory.

There are several threads in this section discussing the various harness' needed to retain steering wheel controls, rear controls, door chimes and On*.

Hey tango talked to a guy at my local shop today he said this cant be done .but after reading some post on here i don't know if he is rite or not.

I'm not radio  savy, but there are lots of theads in this section about folks putting in after market head units and using adapters to keep the chimes, On* and steering wheel controls.  I'm surprised no one who has done this or knows more about radios' has replied yet.  Just scan thru the first 5 or so pages of this section you'll see threads titled "steering wheel controls' , Keeping door chimes etc. that may answer your questions.

The issue "May be" that the factory head unit was gone and so were other components that pluged into it. I'm guessing the wires of the harness may have just been cut off, or the factory amp was removed or bypass'ed which may be why it can not be done.

Either they don't know what they're talking about or I don't know what I'm talking about, but one thing I can tell you is I have my Kenwood DNX 7100 working off of my factory steering wheel controls, do a search on PAC steering wheel control harness
