I want to add a backup camera and I want to hear my cell phone over/through the stereo, but I don't know where/how to start.

The guy I got my avalanche from said he used bluetooth to connect his cell phone to the stereo.  I don't think the avalanche has bluetooth because it's an '04.  I think he used the bluetooth from his gps to connect his cellphone.  I already have a navigation system on my phone so I really don't want to buy a gps just to connect through bluetooth.  I don't want to replace the standard stereo either.  Is there another way to hear my cell phone over/through the stereo?

I need a backup camera because I cannot backup without hanging halfway out the door or without physically walking around the parking space to see how much room I have.  I think I want to put the monitor on the visor to conceal it.  Since the backup camera requires a monitor I was thinking about adding another camera that can also be connected to the monitor, but I want something that'll be able to record.  I assume I'll need a dvr or something to record to also.  Is this possible?

I'm sure can find most of the stuff I'll need 'eventually' but how do I know if everything will be compatible with my '04 and all the other stuff?
*I would like to do all the work myself if possible, although the hardest thing I've ever done was change the wiper blades.  I'd love to install a carputer but I think that's out of my reach.

well...there is a couple choice's for you. the first is there's bluetooth unts that will interface with your factory stereo. Any good stereo shop will have them or know where to get them in your area.  there's also a thing called cubby cam. it goes in the pocket to the right of your stock radio. (cubbycam.com i think, if not it's found on this site)

the other option that  might be easyer and depending on your luck might run the same. I just recently installed a kenwood dvd player in my '05. it has the kenwood bluetooth unit that allowed you to control your phone through your touch screen. plus i also installed a back up camera and i have it so when i put the truck in reverse the display on the dvd player change's to the back up camera. that will cost between $1000 - 1500 depending on where you go and what dvd player you get.

as for installing this yourself. the stand alone bluetooth unit might be up there in skill level as it sits inline with your speaker wires (that's how it cuts the audio for the phone).  the cubby cam..i've never installed one of them but the one i put in my truck was very easy. just a ground wire and a power (reverse wire)  http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3171969  there's a link to my truck if you need some idea's

If I choose the dvd option, can I choose any dvd that has bluetooth or is there something else I should look for also?

there are some dvd players out there that come with bluetooth come already installed in the unitand you don't need a seperate module.  but any dvd player that has bluetooth will connect to your phone. with the exception of i-phones...i've heard there's some units out there that don't like to connect to them.

Thanks for all your help!

I checked out the pics on your site and I think I'm going with the same route you took, even though I'll have to replace the standard stereo.  I don't know what model/brand I'll use.  I'm going to meet and discuss it with the audio installer tomorrow.  Is there any brand I should avoid?

I'm  going to add more cameras also.  Do you know where DVRs for vehicles are sold?
