The 4th of July celebrations in Washington, DC are among the most attended events of the year and many people arrive early to stake out a seat on the lawn. There are plenty of activities scheduled throughout the day to keep the whole family busy.
Getting to the National MallThe best way to get to the National Mall is to take the Metro. Stations nearby include Metro Center, Gallery Place-Chinatown, Judiciary Square, Federal Triangle and L'Enfant Plaza.The Smithsonian Metro station will be closed on the Fourth.
Public access to the National Mall begins at 10:00 a.m., with all visitors required to enter via a security checkpoint. Security CheckpointsOn the 4th of July all visitors must go through security checkpoints to enter the National Mall and areas along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Coolers, backpacks, packages and persons will be subject to inspection. Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages and the use of personal fireworks are prohibited. Washington, DC’s Independence Day ParadeParade Start Time: 11:45 a.m.
Parade Route: Constitution Avenue and 7th to 17th Sts.
The parade draws a large crowd, so plan to arrive early to stake out a good viewing spot.
Concert on the Washington Monument GroundsBeginning at 6:00 p.m. the U.S. Army Concert Band and the U.S. Army Band Downrange plays on the Southwest corner of the grounds of the Washington Monument.
A Capitol Fourth ConcertTime: 8 - 9:30 p.m. (Admittance begins at 3 p.m.)
Location: West Lawn of the U. S. Capitol
The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary.
4th of July Fireworks on the National MallFireworks Time: At dark, usually around 9:15 p.m. Rain Date: July 5th
Expected Road ClosuresFrom 6:00 a.m. to approximately 10:00 p.m. Memorial Bridge to Memorial Circle on the Virginia end of the bridge
Rock Creek Parkway south of Virginia Avenue to Lincoln Circle Drive, including all approaches and ramps
I-66 in the DC, just south of the Kennedy Center
Lincoln Circle Dr. and all approaches and ramps into and out of Lincoln Circle Dr., including Henry Bacon Dr. and Daniel French Dr.
Constitution Ave. ramp off of Eastbound I-66 in DC

14th St. between Pennsylvania Ave. and Independence Ave. will be closed at 11:30 a.m. and a decision will be made after the parade whether to re-open 14th St
