How can i tell if my 2004 Avalanche has the premium Bose sound system?  The front speakers have the Bose label on them.

If the Door says Bose and you have a console you have a Bose Speaker system.

Thanks, that's what i thought.  The manual says I should have 6 powered speakers.  Are they counting the two (I assume tweeters) by the windshield as two of the speakers?  I'm replacing the head unit soon and I'm assuming that these would be powered by the Front Left and Front Right jacks.  Is this correct?

I have 7 speakers in my BOSE system...  Right Front Tweeter, Right Front Door, Left Front Tweeter, Left Front Door, Left Rear Door, Right Rear Door, and powered sub in the console...

The tweeters and front door speakers are run from the same channel.  And beware of the GMOS-04, very few work right...  I actually direct wired my headunit when I replaced it...  I had the GMOS-04, but it fried within 5 hours, so I clipped the plug off of it and used that to wire my head unit...  I lost the warning chimes and the delayed shut-off, but that doesn't bother me at all...

This is what I did...

And this thread shows the remaining pieces of my GMOS-04.  All I used was the plug that plugs into the factory plug.

Thanks for that information, very helpful.  One last question.  It appears you are using the speaker level outputs.  I would have assumed you would use the line level outputs into the bose amplifier.  Is this incorrect?

When you use the GMOS-04, you use the RCS's from your head unit.  But I'm not using the GMOS-04, I'm only using the plug from it that plugs into the factory harnes.  All the colors matched up for the speakers, ground, and 12V constant.

Hello again.  I'm in the process of installing a new HU and am going to try this approach of yours.  My GMOS-04 didn't work out of the box (no switched power, no sound, nothing except constant 12v).  When you attached your head unit I'm assuming you also used the blue/white stripe wire as well which provides power to the bose amp?  Or did you bypass the amp all together?

Ok, went and installed the radio without the GMOS-04 box and it's working just fine.  Only issue is a hiss I'm getting from the speakers.  Did you experience this.  Has nothing to do with the engine as it occurs when the engine is both off or on.

Triton - what brand was your GMOS-04?   I have the Metra version, and had no problems.  I also have the PAC SWI-X to regain steering wheel controls and the PAC adapter for the door chimes (forget the model #).

No problems with mine (except I gotta get back under the dash to turn up the volume on the chimes, can barely hear it when I try to save settings for the seat position.)

Pat - where are you located?  If you're in the NJ area, we have a few GTG's planned and there are plenty of us looking for an excuse to do a modding GTG before it gets too cold out, or even as it warms up.

I had the Metra version and it didn't work right out of the box.  Since I only had the weekend to do the installation, I cut out the box using Triton's method and it works.  I know I am sending speaker levels instead of line levels to the bose amp, but it doesn't seem to mind.  I would have preferred to use the GMOS with the RCA connectors.  Also, the hiss seems to go away when I'm on the road.  It only makes the noise when I'm parked.  Odd, but I can live with that.  I didn't use Onstar and I think I can live without the Chimes.....time will tell.  I'm still working on the steering wheel controls......PAC SWI-PS.  It seems to work some times right now, but it is flakey.  I will try reprogramming it.  I think one issue might be I programmed the Onstar button for Mute and I don;t think it liked that.  Why didn't they put a Mute button on the steering wheel?

I am in Boston (Go Pat's).

The onstar button on the steering wheel will mute the radio so you can "talk" to the Onstar people.  Mine doesn't work either, even with the adapter, as for some reason it will actually SHUT OFF my radio.  Didn't used to do this, but oh well.  I keep forgetting to cancel my Onstar, as I never use it anyway.  All I get is an email every month telling me how my oil level is, and guesses when I should replace it.  I can do that from the DIC myself, and for free!

Pat, check out the New England forums for some GTG's in your area.  KevMack is the CC up there, and he's got a lot of GTG's planned soon.  I think there's one this coming weekend, or maybe next weekend.  And if you want to make a trip to NY/NJ, we have a few going on as well.

It was the METRA GMOS-04...  I got it from crutchfield when I found out I needed it...  It worked for about 5 hours and stoped...  So I just direct wired it.

And the Bose amp doesn't work better or worse when using rca's instead of the line level...  Cause if you think about it, you're stock head unit is only sending line level to it...

I never messed with the onstar, I don't have one. But I think to do it right you need to get the adapters or you will have problems no matter what. The Hissing sound might be a bad ground or your speaker + and - are mixed up.

I'm from Boston also, you sould try to come to a GTG. There is alot of guys that are willing to try and help with problems all the time. We got a big GTG in the white mountains on the 24th. Go in the MA threads and say HI.
