2004 z66 114k miles

WHen you apply the brakes about half way through you can hear a noise is sounds like a "domb" noise if you can understand what that is.  Not a popping noise though just a dull hard noise.

I just noticed it after stopping and when I applied the brakes the noise was made and it still was making it every time I applied the brakes I would be half in the brake when the noise.

I put new brakes on the front less than 5,000 miles ago.

I am open to any suggestions on what this could be.  Thanks....

I really don't understand what kind of noise it is that you are talking about but I would maybe check for a loose/missing caliper bolt  Huh

It is like a thomp noise or a clonk noise if that helps out.  It does it when I am going straight and hit the brakes.  The other post on here about that deal with it turning or in reverse but mine does it going straight.

Hope that helps if not let me know i can somehow clear it up...

sounds like the same thing I'm going through with my truck. 08 LTZ. it has gone to dealer seven times for the same issue. banghead banghead banghead Dealer has cut front rotors twice. Now they finally replaced them . The rears have been cut once. and I still here the thump thump thump. I called GM customer service, they started a case on this and now after seven time the dealer finally duplicated this. Dealer called GM tech Support they told them to stop all work and wait till they call back in a few days with results. Tech support called back and stated its the pads. Theirs an issued with some of the current stock pads for our trucks. At least this is what they are telling me. they have replaces all four corner with new ceramic pads. I'll find out at noon today when i pick up my truck. But I'm so fed up that I've started the lemon law process. Angry Angry Angry So hope this helps

I had rear brake pads sticking on the slide making a popping noise. Not the pin sticking -- the slide.........those pads set on a slide and they need to be free and move easy so lube the slide. I have even heard some members say that they had to do a little filing in the slot on the pad to make them loose enough to slide without sticking......

Balljoints tight???   If there is play in them, the steering knuckle will move and cause a single clunk each time brake is applied

The ball joints are good on the truck everything is tight and they are in good shape.  Still making noise.

I can't figure out what in the world it is.

Could that be what is causing the noise in my truck and if so how could I go to GMC and get it fixed for free or what could my options be?

would the fact that i can feel the noise under my feet driver side help to resolve it any better.  When it makes the noise you can feel it in the floorboard....

Check the small bolt that tightens the torsion bar key. But if you turn it any you will need an alignment......I am just wondering if there is any torque on the torsion bars, that key in under the floorboard, more under your butt than your feet..................

So how would I know if anything is wrong with that...  I got a GM expet going to look at it for free next Tuesday but I'd like to resolve it myself.  If you could tell me what to do to the bolt or how to know if that could be the problem..THanks

The best thing to do would be to let GM look at it if you are not sure what to do. The torsion bars have (or should have) a lot of torque on them and can be dangerous if you try to remove them. Having said that if you want to look, here is what I am talking about.........

Get under the Avalanche about where the front seat is, you will see a cross member there. Look for the torsion bar, it is  round and connects to the lower control arm at one end and goes into that crossmember at the other end. At the crossmember end look into the crossmember and there should be a small bolt with the head down........it pushes up into a "key" that is a teardrop piece of cast that when rotated up will tighten (twist) the torsion bar. I am thinking if that bolt somehow fell out or was loose that the torsion bar or key may make a pop when stopping.

I have not heard of this happening but just thought that it is something to check since you say that you feel it on the floorboard.................

Thanks man I will look at that I found a certified GM man worked for 25 years at GM and has his own shop now he will look at it for free for me and he does not charge much to fix things but it is according to what it is wrong with it.  But my friend said he is real fair and I think he will help me out given my circumstances but if he can't fix it or find out what is wrong with the truck than I don't know who can, but he said he should be able to tell me.  I am taking it Tuesday and will post what is wrong with it on here and hopefully it can save someone some pain and suffering that it has caused me.

I will let you know later in regards to the GTG tomorrow.  Got to go over finances make sure I can afford the gas to go.  This law school has got me on a super tight budget but I would love to make it sounds so fun plus I would love to see all the AV's there.

Great, FYI they are giving way a few GAS CARDS at the GTG, maybe you will win one!
