THE THREAD to END ALL THREADS about 303

Below find pics & links to rubber/vinyl protectant products similar to the much beloved 303 aerospace protectant.  These products conain PDMS resins and some sort of sunscreen (I do no believe sunscreen part but that is my opinion).  They are all water based and a white milky like fluid.

Differences will be:

- Amount of PDMS resins which is the good stuff...I feel Zaino has the most....but I have no proof.

- Smells....I like black magic for smell as it is citrus like.....

- Price...Turtle wax is some cheap stuff!!

- Viscocity.....Meguiars consumer product is thick....sometimes it clogs sprayer...great for my Z66 floor mats ...spray it on and let it sit why you do other things...then come back and wipe up....

Application technique varies.....but my advice....

EXTERIOR PLASTIC TRIM...spray or wipe on...let sit about 5-20 mins...and buff dry....the buffing sets PDMS resins.....so it runs less when wet.

TIRES & OTHER RUBBER TRIM....spray or wipe on...let sit 5-20 mins....and buff....this give very low shine....for more shine...after first coat dries..follow up with more coats...the more you apply the shinier it gets...but will only ever get to a satin new rubber look......and always buff the final coat......

INTERIOR PLASTIC/VINYL/LEATHER.....spray or wipe....wipe excess off with dry Micro fiber or other soft towel....after product sits a bit....This stuff will work on GM leather since the leather has a special coating to protect leather...but I do say once or twice a year apply some leather conditioner to seats and let sit so it may soak up any needed oils and stuff...

These products are great on rubber seals...these are door seals, midgate seals, cover seals etc etc etc...

Please note: The product name I list may not be the nor correct so please check the websites and with local vendors......I hope this HELPS everyone make an informed decision.  I am also not involved with any company listed below......

303 aerospace protectant

black magic semi gloss dashboard protectant seems they do not make it any more...so you have to find it...

they do have wipes though...

Zaino Tire Dressing

turtle Wax 2001 Protectant

Gold Class Vinyl/Rubber Protectant

Natural Shine Vinyl & Rubber Protectant

Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner

Eagle One

Older mothers product hard to find....really good stuff though

3M rubber protectant

Mother interior Protectant

Vinylex by LEXOL

one Grand Stuff

Pinnacle First Retailer site I looked at.....but there are many others

Blackfire retailer site...there are others

1Z Einszett

Detailers Pride Relabled batch made product

Armor All Original

Low Shine Armor All

I am sure there are others similar products....but once you try one it is easy to spot a similar product...they all have pretty much the same chemical but just different mixtures....Heck I think I have one I bought at Dollar General ..point is they all pretty much feel and look the same....SMELL will be different....

If you think you have found a similar product .... open bottle and test at store..if ya think it is it...and cheap buy it...use it on tires to see....if it is GREAT tell the rest of us...if not ..use it in fenderwells for the fresh detailed look....

Any questions...post em here....I will try to answer... veryangry

Thanks once again YGMN  thumbs_up

Which in your opinion is the best value...closest in protection, application, etc...to 303 for lower cost?  I trust your opinion so much with this stuff that I'd rather try one or two that you like instead of all of them.

Thanks

Currently I found some westleys....that was like 2.99 for 32 ounces.....works great on tires for me,.,.....

I apply about 3-4 coats on tires
1 coat on rubber floormats
wet a cotton towel and wipe all seals

this is all I use it for......so any brand works for me.....

I really suggest going to pep boys auto zone, kmart, wally world etc....and sniffing some bottles and felling the spray.....buy 1-2 and try em all....

They are all so close I would not say one is better then another......the real difference is probably in how long they last......

but even then what is 1 day when you are talking 2 weeks for good looking tires...it could be due to a heavier rain.......

NOT grease...as oil eventually degrades rubber....

use either one of these products listed above or

the best stuff is:
BMW Gummi Phledge.....which is specific for door seals......at local BMW dealer...it is $$$

I use the 303 protectant and it works great.  Had a little trouble finding it at local auto supply stores but usually have it at RV stores as the big pusher owners use it.  I like it because it is not greasy and any overspray on the paint wipes of easily.

I just ordered a cladding cleaning kit from GM.  Ever had experience using it?  It was $26.00, but I saw on another thread the results were amazing on all of the cladding including a faded bed deck.

I didn't read through this thread before posting this so excuse me if I am merely repeating the already known.

I was at West Marine today for some boat stuff and they have the full line of 303.  It must be really good because it is about 4 times the cost, or more, of other products used for similar purposes.

One thing I have never been able to find is the Westley's Tire Dressing.  I can find Bleach White wherever I go but the tire shine is elusive.   Where is this product commonly found

After reading the Autoint report, I will not go back to using petroleum based dressings on my plastic such as the ones found in this thread:

http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php?board=111;action=display;threadid=19954;start=msg312034#msg312034

I found out a few facts about PDMS.  PDMS should be very safe to use on cladding, because it is commonly used in detergents, shampoos, conditioners, and cosmetics.  Interestingly enough it's also used in silicone breast implants.

I bought a bottle of good ol Armor All Original and applied it about two weeks ago.  AAO should be in this thread because it is a water based product which uses PDMS, just like 303.  Upon reading the MSDS for AAO, I found it contains 15-25% PDMS.  I'm not sure how this stacks up to the other product's percentages.  According to roadfly.org's tests, AAO lasted longer than most products, including 303.  So I'd have to say that it contains at least an adequate amount, if not more than most.

When I first applied the AAO, my cladding was in fairly good shape, but it was at the point at which I normally reapply a protectant (previous protectant used was NXT).  After a good wash and dry, I put on one coat only by spraying it on a MF towel and then rubbing the plastic.  After about 20 mins or so I came back and found the plastic had completely absorbed the AAO, so there was nothing left to buff off.  So far since application it's rained a few times and been washed once.  Here is my observations after 2 weeks:
1) It looks at least as good, if not better, than NXT or Eagle 1 Wet does after 2 weeks.  When 1st applied AAO leaves a satin finish as opposed to Eagle 1 Wet's glossy finish.  I used to like the gloss finish better, but now I think I prefer a satin finish.  It gives it a clean, "like new" appearance, without standing out too much.
2) It does not bead water quite as well as petroleum based dressings, but still does a good job of repelling water.
3) Does not seem to attract dust nearly as much as petroleum based dressings.

Here are some advantages I've found to AAO:
1) It's cheaper that just about anything.  16oz costs about $4, compared to about $12 for 303.
2) More widely available than just about anything.
3) Same basic ingredients as more expensive products.
4) Lasts at least as long as anything I've used, so it's a good value.
5) Leaves a satin finish, which I now prefer for the cladding and have always prefered on interior plastic.
6) Does not cause plastic running boards to get slick which is a huge problem with petroleum based products.

After the last rain, I washed my Av and forgot to check and see if any of the AAO had ran down the sides of my paint.  If any of it did, I didn't notice when I washed it (I washed it by hand) and if any did it apparently wasn't hard to wash off.

New Product for Plastic Protection

The product is called SONÜS TOTAL ECLIPSE.  I use quite a few Sonüs products.  The quality of their products is outstanding.  The link is for Autopia.  For those that have never heard of them, they are an outstanding place to order from.  It is very common for them to throw in freebies on large orders and if there's ever a problem with your order, just email them and they fix the problem immediately.

If anyone orders any of this, I suggest ordering the refill bottle ($1 cheaper) and filling your own bottles.  Sonüs makes great stuff, but the ergonomics of their bottles suck.

What is the status with the Eagle 1 Protectant?  I was able to load up on this about 16 or 18 months ago when the local yokel K-Mart was closing the store.  Got it for 60% off and bought every darn bottle in the place, but I'm supply is starting to run out.  Haven't seen it, but have seen other Eagle 1 products.  Have always been a big advocate of their goods.

Eagle 1 Protectant used to be sold as Eagle 1 Tire Shine Satin Finish.  It was hard to find then also.  You can order it directly from Eagle One.

Best product for what?

for tires..any of the ones shown in first post are fine...they all work about the same they just have different prices...this stuff works on interior parts as well....

For cladding see the FUTURE FLOOR wax thread as it is the stuff to use IMO

I just tried 303 and NXT today....we tested it on a small section of my wife's black 3000 GT....needless to say, ended up doing the whole car....then we did the SLK....the words WOW come to mind.  I have tried just about everything and the NXT is simply the best I have ever used for a shine.  Perhaps tomorrow, I will get to my new Av.

Also used the 303 on the AV....actually looks better than new and it is new!!  Thanks for a great thread and even better advice!!

I have order 303 Protectant from a Mobile Products company.  They have many different products from the complete Sprayway line (Best Glass Cleaner) to 303 Protectant.  Tell them Greg Cornett referred so they know to take care of you!

Will 303 Protectant prevent the fading on the cargo cover of an '07 AV  so Gatorback is not needed?

I have used 303 on my 03 (darker) cladding for some time, but lately the cladding is fading, 303 brings darker color back, but soon fades again.

Is there something that will dye the darkness back in the cladding?

GATORBACK

O/K, but is this stuff greasey?  By the way, just tried a spot of something I have had in my garage for about 10 years, Turtle Wax product called Black Chrome.  It is a dark gray liquid, looks real nice and not greasey, think I will try a spot and see how it looks after a week or so.

Has anyone ever tried Turtle Wax Black Chrome, is it even sold anymore?

O/K, if this is really the answer to the problem does it look natural or like fake shiney paint?  And, if I roll it on, doing a correct neat job, will it look nice?

If both answers are yes, then where is the best place to buy this?

Thanks for your help.

I have never seen one up close that has been rolled on, so I can't really answer that, the sprayed on looks nice, and would be my preferred method of application.
you can purchase it from the website I linked to previously

furthermore, if you had complained to your dealership about fading while still under warranty, you might take the tsb that you can print from the Gatorback site to them and see if they'll do it under warranty still... it has happened for some

good luck!

Thanks again, mine was really o/k until this fall, somehow if just started looking crappy.  Maybe I will have my friend who ownes a body shop spray it on for me.

I really like the cladding, along with the Arrival Blue it looks cool.  Lowered, 305's on 20's, etc,. it's almost a classic. Roll Eyes
