After 16k miles, the clunk finally got bad enough to take to the dealer, so last week, I scheduled the appointment for service for this morning.  When I arrived at the Service Dept (with printouts of the service bulletins in hand), the service tech told me the latest news.

Chevy has a NEWER & IMPROVED mid-shaft to replace the faulty units.  These, unfortunately are not available yet, so the alternative is to replace the faulty unit with a PREVIOUSLY NEW & IMPROVED version (not to be confused with the ORIGINAL version).  If I choose that route, then I'll have to bring the truck back when the NEWER & IMPROVED version is available.

So, I said, OK.  Go ahead and put the PREVIOUSLY NEW & IMPROVED version in and I'll come back again when the NEWER & IMPROVED version is available.  Service Tech says, "No problem.  We'll order the part and it ought to be here in a couple of weeks."  Give me a friggin' break.  Why didn't they tell me that last week when I called and made the appointment?

They had not diagnosed the problem last week when you called to make an appointment Wink

They have now done so, billed GM for the warranty time for diagnosing, and will now be able to order appropriate parts and bill for installation later.

Hmmm....

I  just had my steering shaft replaced per TSB #00-02-35-003F - (Aug 4, 2004).

They replaced the shaft with a new shaft of part # 88963611.  I wonder if this is the "PREVIOUSLY NEW & IMPROVED version" or the "NEWER & IMPROVED".

Any one know the part number for the replacement under TSB #00-02-35-003F - (Aug 4, 2004).

And what is part # under the "newer & improved".

I don't have the part number for the NEWER & IMPROVED version, but since my dealer told me that it is not available yet, I'll bet you have the PREVIOUSLY NEW & IMPROVED version.

My buddy had the same problem with his '00 Silverado. The dealer just relubed it. They never mentioned a replacement shaft is on the horizon.

I have an 03 z71.  I don't have a "clunk" in my steering ( no noise associated with it ).  I do have a "thumping" sensation though.  I had taken it back to the dealer when I had around 8K on it to complain about a vibration that you could feel in the wheel when the A/C unit was on.  They deemed it to be normal and did nothing.  Now it feels like I get way to much road noise up through the wheel.  Again no noise, just a feeling.  Do you think I'm experiencing the same problem as you guys?  Any help is much appreciated.

GM just bouht back my 2002 2500 because they couldnt seem to fix my steering shudder/clunking problem.  I wonder if this newer improved shaft would have saved them $35K...

Dealer called and said the part was in.  When I got there, they told me that Chevy had sent the Newer & Improved part.   Cheesy   They put that on and did a test drive.  Still had some clunks.   Angry  So, they did the crossmember mod and now my baby is quiet on turns and the steering is tighter also.

I had gotten so accustomed to the clunking that it really seems weird not to have it.

Does your paperwork show the part number for the steering shaft?  If so, would you please post.

Don't know which version I got, but on 7/24/04 the one with part # 088963611 was put into mine.

The cause of the problem indicated on my invoice is "lack of lube"  Roll Eyes

spottyJ...no TSB indicated on mine, but I notice p/n is same as one you posted.

Good to know that, the # I posted came from one of the TSB's.

I found this:

1500 Avalanche- 88963611

2500 Avalanche and 1500HD- 89060582

In document #1547502  (8-27-2004)

---------------------------------------

Here's from Document # 1542538 (8-4-04) 2002 & 2003 Avalanches.

"88963611:  Shaft, Upper Intermediate Shaft, Use on all 1500 Series trucks:

Except Escalades, Except Denalis, Except Avalanches."
   ----------------------
"89060582: Shaft, Upper Intermediate Shaft, Use on all 2500 and 3500 Series Trucks and Escalades, Denalis, Avalanches, H2

OK, who's seen a 2500 Escalade?
Now I'm confused too! Ambiguity or update???

I believe they really mean all of the last three by the way the info was formatted..

(Some formatting altered to fit properly.)

I have a Ford, It's the one with the problems, not the Av! I'm just providing the info....

`Wouldn't mind the Ford Diesels, however  D'max is quieter & cleaner.

So what part and tsb should be requested if you have a 04 and have the "clunk"?  Also I have seen some info on an update for the tranny and I think it applies to my av.  Sometimes when I go to take off from a stop it feels like the tranny slips and then catches.  I don't think that is good for the tranny.  Any thoughts?

I'll post the latest TSB I see regarding the klunk when I get a chance...

Joe,
Check the fluid level. If OK, the dealer needs to look at the problem. (Screen / valve body, DTC check, etc)

search for posts/content regarding the MAF sensor IF you have an over-oiled aftermarket air filter. Remember to put your stock air filter back in before a trip to the dealer!!

There was one for driveline klunk (more prominent W/4X4's) That was a reprogram of the PCM; (minor).
