My biggest pet peeve with the TNR is that you cannot set a destination (other than a previously stored one) while the truck is in motion.  I know, I know, it's a safety thing, but c'mon, other manufacturers allow you to do this.  Our other car (Acura MDX) is one example.  This is especially convenient if you have a passenger who can quickly key in an address with no need to stop.

So, the question is if there's a way to achieve this with the TNR.  I was wondering what would happen if you put the infamous VSS wire in series with a SPST switch and then flipped the switch off when you wanted to enter an address.  Anybody know if this would work or have any other ideas to effect this bypass?

By the way, this idea came to me from my second pet peeve with the TNR.  Rather than simply using your average speed on the freeway to compute the time remaining to your destination, you actually have to go into the NAV Setup and tell it what speed to use for calculations.  This one, for me, is just plain dumb on GM's part and really makes me wonder when they're looking at the VSS and/or the internal GPS speed calculation.  In summary, if the TNR is this dumb, maybe the dumb work around above would work!

Rather than simply using your average speed on the freeway to compute the time remaining to your destination, you actually have to go into the NAV Setup and tell it what speed to use for calculations.

This appears to be fairly common, my Garmin does the same thing. It makes sense, in most cases, since your current average speed is not necessarily a predictor of current average speeds. Road conditions can change, traffic can change, and speed limits/road types can change. There really is no easy answer to this, and in my mind, simply using your current average speed is more likely to be wrong than estimating speeds based on map data.

My GPS works the way you don't like, and I think it is probably the best solution.

As for your other VSS questions, I unfortunately have nothing to offer. Sorry, but it's outside my realm of experience.

I have always wondered the same thing myself, but I believe Sperry said somewhere that if the VSS wire was not connected it would set a DTC in memory.

I'm picking up a 05 in a few day's with NAV. I started reading the PDF files on this site. I'm thinking this is not going to be a very user frendly feature. My buddy has the Acura version, it's voice activated, and takes changes on the fly.

GM should have voice activated. They have most of the hardware for On Star, just need to intergrate it in to head unit.

I agree, they should calu est time of arrival, based on current speed, and constintly adj, as you go from stop and go to hwy speeds.

I hope real world use is better then my inital impression.

The old INR would allow setting while moving but I could see where it would be more dangerous than a cellphone.

The code may set but except for some jerky screen updates, it may just work. If you seldom do it, the code will clear with 50 key on-off cycles anyway.

If it doesn't work, it's getting vehicle motion from the GPS as well, and may lock it too - but I doubt that. Go for it!

Being annoyed by this as well, I asked about the switch a while back.  I just installed one tonight, and it works exactly as would be expected.  Thanks everyone for your help with this and the other 9,000 questions I've asked about navis here.

I posted a mini-write-up about the problem is http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,40538.0.html in the hope that future generations may find it  easily Cheesy
