I don't know if you guys noticed, but the NON-Bose TNR is confirmed to work now...
Jason has the kit... J P Customs

"Upgrade your factory audio system (Bose & Non-Bose) to Touchscreen Navigation and keep your factory XM, DVD, Rear Audio Controls, OnStar, steering wheel controls (and Remote CD Changer; Denali & Escalade only). This upgrade package is a COMPLETE package with everything needed for the upgrade."

Wow!!!! Shocked Thats something I thought I would never see...a non-Bose TNR that plays through that great 3 watt (peak output, not RMS ha-ha ) amp behind the glove box of non-Bose trucks. (before my dads 03 tahoe, he had an 02 (went thru 3 trannys Shocked on that one...then gave up and got the 03...) and i swear the "sub" in the rear quarter panel only barely woke up when i played the bassiest rap song i could find...). But anyhow, thats great news for regular cab Silvy's and other vehicles with the front bench... I know there is a guy over on the gmtrucks forum that converted his regular cab 2500 (silvy) to an LT..although he had some trouble getting the nav to finally work because there was no Bose system...

-------ben

PS- im ordering the audiopilot mic and gps antenna from gmpartsdirect right now...almost fell out of my chair when i saw shipping charges... 9$ for just the mic!!?? Does it come with a center console attached too??? jeez... Steve now i know why you steer clear of there Smiley

Order it from one of our site sponsor dealers.. Should be the same cost + 10%, better support and likely a lot less on the shipping.

That's fortunate for them... But that config can drive an aftermarket amp, so maybe there is hope...

Edit: I posted that info over there this morning. I wonder what BB, Linda (Jimmy) and all will think of that.

That was one of the things customer's have been asking for. They like the look of the "factory" system, but wanted to add the aftermarket amp, speakers, sub, etc.
Actually, (I know it'll cost more) but you can add the aftermarket stuff to the Non-Bose Nav Package and get better sound (than the Lux Amp) without the hassle of the factory Bose amp.

Hey Jason, do you sell "pocket" tweeters? They set into the front section of the front door pockets and connect to the door spkr. (That spkr has the full range fed to it).

That's one main Bose complaint... Highs..

so how does the non-Bose TNR work??....like does it just have regular RCA pre-outs on the back or is there an adapter that plugs into it to give you pre-outs...or...

-----ben

also... does the non-Bose TNR still show "sound by Bose" on power up?

Steve-- how does Bose get away with sending the full range signal to the front speakers?? I can understand how they MAYBE get away with no high end cross-over (even tho i think u said they wire in a cap, but how do they get away with no sub-to-mid crossover?? or is there one? And when you ask Jason about the pocket tweeters, would you completly ditch the a-pillar tweeters? I agree with you on the "no highs" Bose issue...on my truck (still haev the crap amp) my settings [to get "acceptable sound"] are: Bass at about 75% (to keep the sub from sounding strained) and Treble at the ONE notch below MAX That way the massive amount of treble sort of kind of covers up the bad quality and makes it a *bit* crisper...definetly looking forward to a LUX amp... (and i guess if i ever want to go full aftermarket in thr future I can just get a C2A-GM24...correct???)

Good question, Maybe just speaker outs to aftermarket amp High-Level in. Unless the LL wiring is still available somewhere on the connector.

I would doubt there's much processing at those spkr-out's. Not "Bose-mangled".

Well fellas.... I've done it. I got my hands on a Tech 2 this weekend and got the INR to learn the Grand Am's VIN.  Grin I also recalibrated the Lux Amp while being hooked up in the Grand Am too. Now, all I have to do is get that 12 Pin connector so i can hook the VSS wire up and i think ill be good to go. Sperry, ya wouldnt happen to know if the GPS bracket has to be grounded or something would ya. That was the only thing that wasnt functional. The navigation aspect of it has been way off. It says im in PA when im in MI. Do i have to drive around to let it calibrate itself or something?

Wow! that is a ways off.. I believe it'll calibrate though. Mine never did that.
I would say the antenna should be secure and not under something metallic, of course.

The VSS isn't needed to get it up and running, but when mine was incorrectly connected for a while, it took forever to understand the right connection. Among several codes set.

BTW, with a Tech 2 in hand, always scan for codes... I do. There were several in the past but rare anymore.

Man this thread is long!

Ok, so I have added the plug and play TNR, took about 30 minutes and it works great! Thanks to this thread ofcourse! Now it's one month later and I am wanting to pull it out and upgrade to the Luxury amp & TNR!! Thanks to this thread ofcourse!

Bought the 54 Denali amp, looking for a 6 disk changer, (because that is the one thing I hate about the TNR). Once I get the changer I will buy the new headunit and in it will go.

However, I have read this thread over and over (yea 3x now, Yes, I have no life) and still I am totally confused. The complexity of the instructions compared to other mods on this board is crazy. Sperry & pbuilder and a few others have done a great job with this thread and their ability to troubleshoot amazes me. But there is still one thing missing in this GIGANTIC thread and that is step by step SIMPLE & COMPLETE instructions. (that are not spread out over 63 pages) I'm talking from start to finish.

Now I realize not all AVs are made the same, and that there are some other "brands" on this thread as well. But I think it is time to simplify this mod so the entire AV nation can enjoy what sperry and pbuilder worked so hard to build.

So I am willing to help with this task, once all the parts are purchased I will take pictures and help to compile a step by step instruction manual of this mod for use by this AV CLUB FOR FREE!! That is if some of you are willing to help me.

I am not an electrician but I can move a green wire and splice a blue one.

I have a 2004 z71 with onstar, xm and a 2005 TNR with a crap amp.
I want to install a denali 54 amp, and a six disk indash changer along with a lux 2005 TNR.

I have downloaded the schematics and will study them more this week.

I am also interested in instructions on how to remove the center console, to access the amp. Do the front seats have to be removed? If so where can I get the special socket to get those crazy nuts off?!

My understading of this mod as of right now is:

Part numbers

TNR LUX  # 15230099
Nav Disk #15105609
GPS ant 15207447
Mic #25705367
Amp Lux #15114454
6 disc CD changer #15122617
CD Mount #12371400
CD Wiring harness #15312903
CD Wiring harness #12149129

1. The lux TNR headunit should plug right in to my dash just as the non lux TNR or the bose 6 disc did.
NOTE: I already have the gps antenna installed those instructons were easy thanks to this thread!
2. The only wiring mods I will need to do will be on the plugs under the center console that plug directly into the amp.
3. I will also need to wire the mic into the amp plug as well.
4. Will I need to buy any adapters? I read about adapters or harnesses but couldn't tell if that was because the installer didn't have xm or onstar.
5. As far as the wiring goes I'm looking for more specific directions then "here is the non lux wiring diagram and here is the lux one." I wanna make sure I don't do anymore wiring changes than I have to.

Sperry please corrrect me if I am wrong on anything.

If anyone can help me in my quest please pm me any info you have.

If these instructions do exsit please excuse my ignorance and send them to me ASAP. Pretty Please.

Sorry for the long reply & I look forward to sharing this mod with all of you!

wow smokinfish...good long post!! (dont worry...i am guilty of some long posts too..)

For some more help you might also want to check out the gmtrucks forum. While I am not as knowledgeable as Sperry, those part numbers DO sound all correct. When you get those parts, all thats left is to rewire the amp connectors...Steve (sperry) has a simple pinout chart that shows exactly what wires need to be changed and im sure he would be happy to send it to you.

However, Steve I have just a couple questions for you too... Yesterday I placed my order at gmpartsdirect (never again will i do this...i know you warned us Grin)... the GPS antenna that I ordered was 15135178. Smokin' fish has a different part # listed for the gps antenna. Are they the same??? Also, smokinfish has two different cd harnesses listed. I only bought the '2903 harness... Do I need the other harness too?? (the '9129) My truck has XM and OnStar (no RSE)...i dunno if that makes a difference. Lastly, smokinfish listed a "cd mount"... is this necessary??? Maybe thats a question for Scott (if i remember right, you didnt install the CDX, no?). Anyway, thanks again everyone!!! chevy

Well im about to do something no one has done yet!!! Grin (im pretty sure) As a learning experience before I install the nav in my Silverado, (and until I find a well-priced TNR on ebay ), I am going to install a LUXURY UC6 system in my dad's Tahoe! I have an extra Lux amp lying around (1 that I bought for my truck Nav and a second I saw on ebay for such a good price that i had to grab it...) so I figured I could install it in my dads Tahoe. He didnt want the nav, but would appreciate better sound quality. Of course the UC6 thats currently installed only works with a dumb amp... So I just bid on and won a UC6 (part # 15179349) from an early H2...remember the early H2's had "special" UC6's that could speak smart amp language... So, when I get a long break from school i'll be able to do the lux amp/lux UC6 install. By the time I finally find a good TNR on ebay for my truck, ill be (sort of) a pro at installing lux amps!!! Grin Just a thought for some of you guys who maybe dont want a nav but want a UC6 with lux amp sound quality! The whole project only costs about 50 dollars. I bought the Class II UC6 for 150 and the lux amp for 50. After selling the old UC6 and its friend the dumb amp, its possible to even make money on this project!!!

Anyone know the differences between the USA-spec adapters and PAC adapters? i read on another forum (CAFCNA will always be my favorite tho Grin) that the USA-spec adapters are better because they utilize the "true dvd input on the radio rather than the cd/xm input...so therefore you can listen to xm while the RSA listens to the aux. input" I thought this was a joke because the radio only actually has ONE input, right??? it just switches between the three (external cdx, XM, RSE) with class II data. Maybe im wrong though...maybe the radio actually does have a separate "dvd input".
here is the website that claims all of that: http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=617

I had the USASpec adapter in my Avalanche and it works just like the factory DVD does with the exeption of the the DVD Icon on the HU staying lit all the time.  With the factory DVD when you turn the player off the DVD Icon on the HU goes out.

You are right about there only being one aux input to the HU and the class II buss selecting which external device is active (CD changer, XM, or DVD).  Even with the factory DVD you cannot listen to the DVD through the RSA panel if the driver has XM selected on the HU.  I verified this when I bought one of the factory video packages off of Ebay and installed the DVD player in the lower center console pocket.

"Class II stuff" is what's controlling your Av. (Besides you and physics. )

Most of what we refer to Class II with here is the Lux amp, which is a class II controlled amp that isn't offeren in the Av as an RPO item.

The mention of the "class II controlled devices" here, is that data selects the audio device on the common, shared aux entertainment audio bus. Those devices (3) are the CDX, XM and the Rear Seat Entertainment (RSE).

The claimed "DVD" input is not documented in the GM service information and in my presumption, was likely found by radio service tech's looking at a service manual on a head unit, found it along with the DATA protocol for switching it and came up with the "why not use it" and it likely went from there.

The advantage, is as stated, providing the RSA will also switch between these sources, is the ability to select another audio input, separate to the common bus shared devices. In this case, your aftermarket DVD audio, would be selectable by the RSA instead of outboard switching, for the rear area.

Well fellas.... The 7335, Bose Amp and antenna are in the Grand Am!! It works awesome and i cant believe the sound difference! She had the monsoon amp but that thing doesnt compare. Now all i have to do is get that nice little 12 Pin connector that plugs into the back of the radio so the GPS isnt so sluggish. GPS works though. It only delays about 5 seconds or so. Im gonna try and post some pics tonight. My gÜrl is pretty happy now. Yeah!!!! And they all told me it wasnt possible...... thumbs_up  Grin If anyone can get me that 12 pin plug, ill pay $20 for it. Thanks again to Steve for the help.

Steve, got a question for ya. Do you have any idea why the HU would reboot itself. I drove around the block tonight and entered my home address to see if the voice guidance worked ok and noticed that in the middle of entering the address and so forth, that the HU would reboot and go back to the "Logo" screen and back to the Nav screen. I also noticed that when it was working normal, that the direction was exactly opposite of what it really was. Think it just needs to be recalibrated? Thanks ~Ed

I've heard of that before, but in the INR, not the TNR. Mine never did that..
The INR had some intermittent in the joystick.
At this point, you'll need to run it and use it a bit at first to gather anymore details.

Regarding the prior post:

Cool! I know the feeling about the "can't be done"...  Well, maybe a few cases, but..

Contact SPX-Kent Moore, maybe they can work with you, having this number. The connector # (shell, at least) is 12064799. The pinout is somewhere (Ha!, you look!) earlier in this topic. (or part 1)

You will need the terminals if it doesn't come with it.

Waytek Wire doesn't show the 100 series. Hmmmm.

Edit: Punctuation error.

My INRs both reboot, the other day I tried to delete an saved mark and it kept on rebooting on.
After about ten time it came up with ( insert original dvd nav disk ) in english and something in japanees. had to turn it off to get ride of it, that is the engine.  my other INR did the same thing so I think it will be comon. Might be a heat problem.
