Greeting Colorado Avers
There has been some talk about doing a GTG mod day. For those of you in the Denver metro area (not limited to) who are interested in doing this, post your response here and include what mods you would like to do. Then we can work on setting up a date. I do have access to a garage with a lift and some air tool if we need it
.
Mods are Easier to do in a group

PLEASE!!!! I really really REALLY want to get my tailgate to lock with the remote!! Heck, even a seperate remote would work too.
I cannot tell you how many times I have left it unlocked with expensive items back there! Last week my son's hockey gear was in there and this past weekend was a saddle I'm trying to sell! I went to the grocery store, came out and opened the gate only to see the saddle sitting there all along unlocked! Yikes! I have heard someone in the Colorado area has done this mod, but I can't remember who that was?
Saturdays are off limits for us but Friday night and usually Sundays are fine.

Well since I would be one of those 'yep, done ALL those' (except sail lights - I just have the stainless screws) I am willing to help out others. Just someone let me know when it's scheduled - I don't check this site too often.
I have quite a few tools and can bring a box filled to help out. Also if anyone wants or needs to order parts like door lock actuators and pin switches - let me know about 4-5 days prior and we can get a big order with like PartsExpress.com where I have a wholesale account. I can save everyone a few bucks on door (tailgate) lock actuators ($3.50-$8) and stuff they might need.
Lets not pick a cold weekend unless you plan to bring hot coffee to keep us warm and toasty.
I guess I do have one more mod I can work on when not helping others... Just need to get some aluminum square tubing welded...

I got the firestone kit (it had a 24 month warranty vs airlift's 12) but they are the same thing just about. Had the AirLift 1000 on my last truck. I think AirLift has more options and sizes. I think I ordered my set from like "michigan truck spring" or something to that effect. If you call them or another dealer I am sure they should be able to help find the right kit for you with your lift. LilDevilmotorsports.com has them now, Rodney will help guide you to the right ones.
Click the picture in my sig for info. I would guess it would take us a couple hours.
What kind of boat you getting? I sure miss mine!
Hated to part with her, but I WILL get another and may start looking for property on a private lake before too long. I HAVE to get back into skiing and wakeboarding!!! (Invite me,
Invite me,
I can flag)
I have to say I don't know HOW I lived without my remote tailgate lock.
I use it all the time and it sure is nice to know when you are walking around wal-mart the tailgate is still locked up. That is going to have to be a like FULL day mod unless people want to take the tailgate skin home with them to finish getting the tape off. We also need some like 16ga or so steel for that to make some new lock levers - anyone have some scrap steel like that and a good way to cut it? I think I have some, just need to check. What I used was a little thin, but works fine.

I am game for a Mod GTG. If you have access to a lift, I would be interested in installing the Ford Torsen Bar keys that have been sitting in my garage for almost 2 years. I am interested in putting 285 tires on my truck and would like to get a little better clearence. I can schedule a Front End Alignment for the way home. I have lots of electric connectors I can bring. From 1/0 to 18 gauge - I bet I got you covered.

So far we have about 5 people interested in doing something and some are willing to pitch in and help (they Gadget
have done all these mods. I to have done some of these already so together we should have an idea on what we are doing
Remote tailgate (lock with the current remote) [Chris In CO - North Co Av -Mikro Brew]
Mag lite [Naranja_Z71]
Cargo aux light switch [RockyMtnShowtime - Naranja_Z71 - Chris In CO- Mikro Brew}
Full time drls [Naranja_Z71 - RockyMtnShowtime]
Sail Panel brake lights [Gusman - RockyMtnShowtime]
Air Lift rear air bags [RockyMtnShowtime]
Ford Torsen Bar keys [Castle_Rock_AV - North Co Av]
It looks like a Friday night or mid afternoon Sunday work's best for. NO DATE HAS BEEN SET WERE ARE JUST POLLING PEOPLE to see what mods and what day of the week works best and then we can work on a date.

Weekends are good for me. Question, does the remote tailgate work with your exixting remote or a seperate one? That sounds like a great mod if it works with the one I already have.
I don't believe I'll be able to do the air bags this time around. They may not fit because of the lift. I'm still checking on it.
Thanks again North CO AV for all your time and trouble trying to get this together.

Well it sounds like we are getting close
.
We have about 5-6 people willing to do a mod day. Now all we have to do is figure out which mods to tackle. What do you all think about this go around we do remote tailgate (existing remote hook it up right, if I read a couple of links right that say it can be set up that way), cargo switch and full time DRL's
Thoughts???
Next will be, which day?

Sounds good to me. I would also like the remote tailgate lock if time permits. I would like to get an idea on how the sail panel lights get installed. I wanted to do that for my next mod, but maybe another time.
Thanks again Matthew.

I meant to add the sail panel lights mod to the list it’s real easy.
The hard part is finding the lights. I found mine at AutoZone but they only have one set (includes 2 lights) at each store I had to get a set in Ft Collins then pick up another set in Loveland and then in Longmont If I were you I would start finding them now. I can hit the stores out here if you would like.

Well add me to the remote tailgate list, and the back up cam list, and the fulltime DRL list, and cargo area light switch list, and the cargo area 12V power socket list, and the... well that's all I can think of at the moment! I have parts for most all of them except for the DPDT switch for my backup system and the actuator et al for the remote tailgate mod. Oh and I'm pretty much booked up on weekends from now til mid to late April!

Sounds good to me. Guess if those are the mods on the block a garage with a lift is not needed. Garage with a stock pile of papertowels and goo-gone might be in order. Weekends are best for me, they are busy, but we can break away to make it.

I would like to use a lift for the torsen bar keys - not required, (and I really do not have to do this right now) but have not done it yet because I didn't want to have to use the floorjack and jack stands.
I am cool with most weekends - even a Friday afternoon / Saturday morning event is cool if we plan enough in advance. But lets plan it now. I am trying to schedule an advanced handgun class. 12th or 19th work for me. However, since this is Colorado in March we should plan a back-up date.

I guess our next plan of attack (besides the date) is to find out what parts we need for which mods. If we have to get any online, we need to do it quickly, right?

With this many people wanting to do mods, may I suggest we start out with the following
Remote tailgate lock (with the current remote) [Chris In CO - North Co Av -Mikro Brew]
Mag lite [Naranja_Z71]
Cargo aux light switch [RockyMtnShowtime - Naranja_Z71 - Chris In CO- Mikro Brew}
Full time drls [Naranja_Z71 - RockyMtnShowtime]
Sail Panel brake lights [Gusman - RockyMtnShowtime]
Next time we can take on the power tools
Air Lift rear air bags [RockyMtnShowtime]
Ford Torsen Bar keys [Castle_Rock_AV - North Co Av]
I am going to get in touch with Gadget and hpoefuly he will be willing to help me put a list together that will outline the equipment we need and were to get the hardware (part numbers to)
I will be in DC again… the week of the 14th so how does Friday March 25 or Sunday the 27th sound? I am not sure about avaiblity but I think doing this on a Sunday we can have all day.

I think there are a few people that have indicated thay would like to just show up and hang out and help that would be great as well. If all those that are planning on attending please send me an personal email (year of truck & mod) so that I dont leave anyone out
Thanks

I Told Matt I would put together some info and parts list kind of thing for a few of the mods we will take on. I will post some of that stuff later as well as kind of how long I expect things to take.
I will order tailgate lock actuators and pin switches prior to our GTG (probably on Monday so they are here mid next week)
So if you KNOW you are going to do the
tailgate lock - let me or LET MATT KNOW
(via PM or E-mail)
(Expect the cost of the tailgate lock "kit" to run around $25-$30) And yes it works with the factory or aftermarket alarm. (Taps into the rear drivers side door lock wires)
Also if you want to add pin switches for cargo lights - l
et me know how many pin switches you want.
(Do you want the light on with just tailgate, how about cargo lids? want to add a pin switch to set off (aftermarket) alarm if the fuel door is opened...)
I can order some ring terminals for the pin switch electrical contacts and a few splices and connectors and stuff - just need to get a count of for sure how many people are planning each mod.
So let MATT know actually what all mods you plan to do, I can order the parts that are hard to find or more expensive around here, but neither of us want to end up with $100 worth of hardware for people that decide to bail
and don't buy the parts from us.
Some of the other mods you will need to get parts yourself. Example - 12v power outlet in the bed - get the outlet at wal-mart for $12, get an inline splice there too, I will have a hole saw at the GTG and can help, but show up with the parts.
Links with lots of pictures of about ALL my mods can be found by clicking the picture on my sig if you want to do a little surfing and decide if there is anything else you want to tackle.

OK, here are a few mods you might want to do with some ballpark $ figures on some parts:
12v outlet:
INFO here
Wire, in-line fuse, crimp on connectors - add another about $2.
However, I can get these marine grade outlets for $6 if you want them:
(you can also get the same outlet I got at Wal-mart for about $15)
Cargo light pin switch(s) with or without manual override switch:
INFO here
I can get pin switches for about $1 each. Wire splice, ring terminals, wire... Add another $3 or so. - How many do you want? Manual override switch - get one at Radio Shack.
Remote tailgate lock:
THIS IS THE MOST COMPLICATED, AND WILL TAKE THE MOST TIME.
INFO here
Key items that will be needed:
Actuatator = $9 (Gadget can get for you)
Wire = $3 (Gadget can get for you)
Splices, connectors = $2 (Gadget can get for you)
Rivets = free (Gadget can get for you)
Goo-Gone (orange) = FIND IT youself, or maybe we can get some 3M adhesive tape remover to all share. (It's expensive and in large qty) I got goo gone at Target I think. Not the yellow stuff, get the orange.
Paper towels - each person should bring a roll
409 or other cleaner
Rubbing alcohol - I think I might have some... Bring it if you can.
Razor knife (the snap off blade kind which can expend like 2" long) - bring one.
Razor scraper - I have a couple, but bring one and some razor blades
1" drywall puddy knife to help scrape tape off
Scotch Bright pads - they might help. Also we tried to sand off tape on some parts - it kind of worked too... I will bring what I have.
3M tape - enough 3/4" or 1" to go across the width of the the tailgate 3 times (top x2 and bottom) = 180"=15'
Enough 1/2"-1" tape to go down both sides = 40" = 3.5'
(you will need to get the tape yourself) - check auto part stores, hardware stores... (it's the black/grey stuff with the red plastic. Don't get the white foam tape - it's not good enough for automotive use.
I have wiring info for '02 AVs, I have wiring info for '03 AVs, don't know about '04 or '05 so if you have an '04 or '05 and plan to do this - let Matt know.
I would suggest if there are a number of mods you want to do and want help with - just take your tailgate skin home with you to finish pealing the tape off (get the wife/kids to help...) and then rivet/tape it back to the tailgate frame the next day. (assuming you have a rivet gun) you could take mine home with you as long as you bring it back.
Mag Light Mod:
I suggest all pick up their own clips at either:
Sportsman's Warehouse
ACE Hardware
Big 5 Sporting goods
Jax (in Ft. Collins)
Sail panel LEDs = I don't know. Have not done, but might be worth finding a place to order LEDs online if a few plan this. Could all chip in for shipping. I call NOT IT. Don't know where to get them, and don't think I will do this mod yet.
Full time DRLs and all 4 on - Matt or I will pick up diodes at Radio Shack with some splices. - Just let him know if you want one or both mods to happen.

Schweet! (For everything: Matt organizing the GTG, all the folks wanting to mod, the cross referencing by Chuck and the detailed parts run down by Ivan.
)
Since I fail to show up for anything north of Castle Rock,
I am just lurking for a bit. (After I missed the Monster Truck Show, I was given the directive, "Do your Avalanche club things on Sundays. I don't work on Sundays." This is so the wifey can watch the squids and I don't have to back out of anything.)
But I want to do the remote tailgate lock (and tie the tailgate and the saddle bag lids into the security system). Splitting the tailgate though...egads! I'm worried about putting it back together, too.
I'll be sure to drop an email to _gadget_ with details on my component needs. I'll check in at a later date with a confimed yes/no for attending.

I should mention there is a couple ways to do this without skinning the gate. I personally have not done it.
Here is
link here
a to some instructions (with pictures) of a kit that does this. There IS cutting of tailgate skin under the bezel in that above link. However I do have one of those "gun style" actuators in my basement (no mounting plate - you would have to make it) so first that wants it can have that for free. Anyone else that wants one of those actuators can have one for $4 each. (see the parts express website)
And if there is anything else you want from Parts Express before our GTG, just e-mail or PM me the part number and qty - I can get you better prices.

I will show up to help - but will probably just bring tools and pitch in where I can. I would like to do the tailgate mod eventiually so this will give me a chance to help someone else, learn and then do it later.
Ivan, If you will get me the required parts for an 03 (Tailgate mod) I will get you the $. I have plenty of wire, I guess I just need the actuator and whatever other hardware parts are needed.
Maybe I missed it, but

*GULP* I'm getting nervous about all of this, but I know with the help of others, I can do it! Hubby might have to coach a game on the day we pick, but he can come help me before and afterwards. I will show him the list of supplies I need, he can put it together for me. I'm on the lookout for orange goo!
Let's pick a date. Don't forget, Easter is at the end of this month, so that Sunday is automatically off. Any ideas?

Don't worry guys. This stuff is not hard, ya got experts here to help out.
I just called myself an "expert"
Ha Ha.
Oh, maybe I should toss another mod idea out there... Locking center console for the '03+ trucks. That has been handy once in a while, pretty easy to do. (Again see garage for info)
I would vote Sundays as best times for myself, but

The location;
Eire Colorado South of Longmont 5050 Weld County Rd.1
I-25 to highway 52 West on 52 to WCR 1 south (left) about 2 miles on the left.
Once we agree on the date I will send more detailed information on the location.

Ever been out tailgating at some event? It's a PERFECT location for that kind of stuff. The AV is a perfect tailgating vehicle - loaded up and ready to party by just removing the cargo covers and storing them on the luggage rack up above. Party is rolling in 60 seconds. Also use it to air up the air mattress while camping or that kind of stuff.
I need to get a 12v blender - you have the build in coolers and ice in there to keep the beer cold - make some nice frozen drinks for those hot summer days...

I will get a list together here soon (maybe later today) of the different parts required for each mod we are talking about with a list of people who I know want those items. I will buy MOST of the parts required for each mod just keep it simple.
I will order parts by lets say this FRIDAY, so check back later this week for a few more details.

If I do the LED sail bolts I think I will do the brake light/turn signal wig/wag version.
Those will then work as brake lights, and turn signals, but they will light when your turn signal is in the off portion and the LEDs will turn off when the stock turn signal bulb is lit (opposite pattern - thus wig/wag). There are a few ways to wire them, I think we could figure about any option you want to do.
See
this thread for more info.

OK, for those who want to do the 12v power outlet (cig. lighter) mod at the GTG this is what you will get, what you need to bring/provide and what it will cost:
Those who are doing this:
(If I missed you PM me and I will add your name)
Trail Ready Z71 = BASIC KIT+ FUSE = $20
mikro brew = BASIC KIT + FUSE + 1 plug = $25
NORTH CO. AV =
2
BASIC KIT (no fuse or plugs) = $30
Thorin = BASIC KIT (no fuse) = $15 <-- make sure you have/get a fuse
You need to bring/provide:
Tell me if you have added a fuse to your STUD #1 underhood fuse box.
WHY? Because we are going to pull power from the center (red wire) of the trailer hitch and GM does not provide that fuse by default. If you don't know then you probably need one. I will buy one for you. Want to check? Open the hood, open the fuse box top. Look in the upper left of that near all those large square fuses. Is there one red plastic box the same size as those fuses? YEP? Then you need to replace that red plastic thing with a fuse. Let me know and I will have one for you.
What you will get:
Marine grade 12v socket
10' of wire (red/black pair)
Inline fuse with holder
10' 1/4" wire loom, wire ties
Spade connectors, Ring terminal (ground) waterproof splice (+12v) wire
2 stainless mounting screws
Help to install, I have tools needed (drill, heat gun, wire crimpers...)
Cost:
Basic items listed above: $15
Options:
If you need a fuse + $4 (might be less - but I think I paid $3.69 ea a year ago)
Interlocking 12v outlet PLUGs: +$5 ea
The socket you are getting has the
option
to use marine locking 12v plugs (so they don't rattle and fall out on rough rides or something)
SEE LINK HERE
for more info. These are just the plugs - you would have to cut and re-wire the device as needed if you have a need for a locking item. I could have used these on my boat because the power wire for my GPS would bounce out when I hit waves - I didn't even know they HAD locking plugs and sockets or I would have done this. (the socket still works with ALL your standard cigerette lighter plugs - this one just has locking ears to keep it waterproof, locked in place and dust proof during use)
I may convert my air pump to a locking plug so it does not fall out when I leave it plugged in during bumpy drives between lakes because I use it to fill up my float tube (belly boat) often.
Payment:
Either cash/check at the MOD GTG or PayPal. I will give details when I have items on hand.
Additional replies for the other mods will follow

just saw a thread on the sail lights, wow they are cool, a couple folks actually tapped them into their trailer lights, so they are turn signals as well...anyone have experience with this?
If I do the LED sail bolts I think I will do the brake light/turn signal wig/wag version.
Those will then work as brake lights, and turn signals, but they will light when your turn signal is in the off portion and the LEDs will turn off when the stock turn signal bulb is lit (opposite pattern - thus wig/wag). There are a few ways to wire them, I think we could figure about any option you want to do.
I have mine wired to my brake light but I would like to do the "wig/wag ... enven on the front would be cool I was a little worried about trying that on my own.
See
this thread for more info.

NEXT:
Pin switches for cargo lights mod. This will get just a wee bit more complicated for a couple of options. i.e. some want a manual override switch to deactivate pin switches and put the truck back into "factory mode" (dash light switch only again)
Those who are doing this:
(If I missed you PM me and I will add your name)
$10 mikro brew = MANUAL SWITCH only
$12 NORTH CO. AV = 2 pin swtichs (no manual switch)
$11 Naranja_Z71 = 1 pin switches + MANUAL SWITCH
Gadget = 1 pin switch (no manual switch) (to alarm the new alum. gas door)
$10 Rocky_Mtn_Showtime = 3 pin switches (no manual switch)
$10 avalanchuck = 3 pin switches WITH MANUAL SWITCH
$10 Chris In CO = 3 pin switches (no manual switch)
$13 Trail Ready Z71 = 3 pin switches + MANUAL SWITCH
$13 Thorin = pin switches + might be a little different MANUAL SWITCH...
You need to bring/provide:
Tell me how many pin switches you want.
Tell me if you want a manual override switch.
What you will get:
By default ALL will get 3 pin switches (tailgate, 2 cargo box lids) unless they tell me different.
Ring terminals and other connectors as required
Wire
Cost:
Basic items listed above: $7
Options:
Pin switches = $1 each (add or subtract as needed)
Manual switch = $ 3
Manual switch will be mounted as noted in the attached picture. If you want to do something different feel free, but your kind of on your own. I can order you any switches
located here
or you can stop at radio shack. I can help, but this setup pictured is going to be the "basic" setup.
Alarm: We will drop a wire for all to later hook these into an alarm if desired, but right now the ground wire will just terminate in the rear of the truck. If you have an alarm, it will be up to you or your alarm guy to run the wire from the rear of the truck to the alarm brain. Yes, I can help, but tell me before the GTG so I can have an extra 30 ft of wire and some wire ties for you. Cost for wire and wire ties: $1.
Payment:
Either cash/check at the MOD GTG or PayPal. I will give details when I have items on hand.
Other notes:
Looking into best location for pin switches and lengths of those switches to work best - may require brackets (as I have done) or we might do a little different. If bracket is required, it might add another like $1-$2 per kit.

Last mod (at least that I am in charge of)
Power tailgate lock
Those who are doing this:
(If I missed you PM me and I will add your name)
Mikro Brew
Trail Ready Z71 = $30
Castle Rock (JUST actuator) = $10
North CO AV = $30
avalanchuck = $30
JoeSpicoli = $30
Chris In CO = $30
You need to bring/provide:
YOU need to get 40" of 1/2" to 1" wide 3M automotive double sided tape.
YOU need to get 180" of 3/4" to 1" wide 3M automotive double sided tape.
YOU need to bring paper towels, goo-gone (or someone else look into getting a pint/quart of 3M tape removal compound to all share (think I heard it was like $30 for enough to do like 5-10 tailgates, but I am not going to look for it or buy it - you guys can decide if it's worth getting and sharing. I would if there are a few doing this during the day)
YOU need to look around and decide what might work well to peal off double sided tape - bring what you can - razor scrapers, putty knives, 409, WD-40, goo gone, rubber gloves, anything you think might help.
YOU need to bring an old blanket/towel or two to lay your tailgate skin on so it does not get scraped or damaged while working on 3M tape removal. May get goo-gone or other items on blanket so don't bring a good one.
If you have a dremel tool - please bring it with any bits you have. We will need to modify a couple metal items (key switch section on the inside of tailgate) and a lock lever we will make.
What you will get:
Everything else you need to get this working. (less 3M tape as noted above)
- Actuator
- Wire
- Wire loom
- wire connectors as needed
- bracket to mount actuator
- wire (coat hanger) to attach to tailgate lever
- New lock lever to allow manual key switch to still work tailgate lock
- Rivets
Cost:
$30 (I am pretty sure - might change a few bucks either way)
Options:
none. Well PM me if you have a request.
Payment:
Either cash/check at the MOD GTG or PayPal. I will give details when I have items on hand.
Other notes:
If you are planning to do this later or want me to ship these parts to you - well I can order and do that. It's not going to be until after the GTG because wire and loom and those kinds of things will not be cut probably until we do the GTG. I will measure and cut sets of wires and terminate while everyone else peals off 3M tape... Expect shipping to cost like $6 or so - chances are it will be less. You can pick up at my house, but if it's before the GTG, you have to measure and cut wire and then make your own lock lever.

FYI......
I found Goo Gone at WalMart 16oz for close to $5. I also went to Auto Zone and Checkers to look for tape. They had the 3M but they didn't carry the wide stuff. I found Scotch Exterior double sided tape (hvy duty) at home depot 450 inches for $15. They also had razor blade scrapers for $1.99.
Thought I would give you a heads up......

Hey gadget,
I don't think I'm going to do the cargo mod....not unless it makes more sense to do it at the same time as the tailgate lock? If so, count me in, but as of right now, I'm am totally "freaking out" at the tailgate locking mod!!!
Everytime I go to look at those pictures from that link above, my head starts spinning and my heart starts racing! I can't put into words how nervous I am about doing this!
Are we set for April 3? That date is wide open for us. Thank God hubby has that day off!
Is anyone doing the Sail Lights? I didn't know what that was either (like Chuck) but now that I do, hmmmm....that looks fun too!
Thanks for all your help!

I watched the video install video of that, and I bet we could do a simular thing if you don't want to split the gate. It WOULD involve cutting out the area under the bezel like they note, but we could make up a bracket or mount the actuator right to the gate skin just like they are doing.

I am kinda freakin out about splitting the gate as well....I really am liking the sail lights, thinking the 5mm reds, I can order these from superbrightleds.com seems the shipping is the same regardless of quantity, so if anyone would like me to add you to my order let me know....from what I have been reading, the ship fairly quickly, so if ya can let me know by the 20th, should be good for the mod GTG...april 3rd?
looks like they are 2.49 per light 8 lights needed. so roughly 20 bucks.

i'd like to get in on this session. i'd like to do the tailgate/manual switch for the cargo light and also the power outlet mod. i've put it on the calendar and the only reason i'd miss is if i get a job to do (home inspections). if that happens, i'll still reimburse whoever for all parts purchased on my behalf. i hope i'm not too late. also, i've done the snakeyes cubby hole mount camera and can assist anyone with that if necessary. thanks!

Just so everyone knows...
Last call on parts.
I am going to try and get parts ordered tonight to make sure we get everything before the GTG so if anything is out of stock I can get it locally.
Starts to add up ya know... My shopping cart has $290 in just little bitty parts right now. However, with a little work I think you guys will all agree for the price on these mods there is not a better choice. $30 for remote tailgate kit? Come on...
Like I said - if anyone wants to not skin the gate and just do the truck gadget method - I would be up to try it and give you a hand. Looks pretty easy.
BTW, if anyone is looking for a backup camera and likes mine - mine might be up for grabs. I have a new camera in the mail today (color this time) cause I want to use the b/w from the truck to replace some color security cameras (useless at night) mounted on the house. However, if you want my camera I will make you a good deal. Or if you want some useless color security cameras for your house let me know. They are fine as long as lighting is kept bright. Work well inside.

Well just so everyone knows, parts I ordered should be in Monday afternoon. UPS stops here about 1:30 or so (he and I know each other well) I should have enough generic electrical stuff (wire, splices, shrink tube, ring terminals, wire ties...) for just about all the other mods anyone cares to do at the GTG. So Matt - yes I have wire and connectors for anyone that wants to do sail LEDs (but I don't have the LEDs)
If you don't plan to make the GTG and want your parts before the event, please let me know when I send you an E-mail with how much your parts came out costing (will send next week) I will need to cut things like I just ordered a few rolls of bulk wire and loom and will need to measure out how much you would need (which I planned to just do at the GTG) for different things.
I did order a FEW extra parts if anyone decides last minute they want another mod, but first come first serve on those.

LOL, I was thinking "what if we get done fast, and we want to do more...I wonder if there is a part store close by"!!
I think I want to do the sail lights too, but haven't completely made up my mind. I think I will watch and see everyone elses then make up my mind.
I'm looking forward to this and seeing everyone elses mods & trucks, should be fun!

Kewl beans. Thanks a bunch Ivan.
I am there! I already told the wife that I am "unavailable" April 3rd. (I just have to remember to call and wish my mother a Happy Birthday.) It just better not snow. Sick kids won't prevent me from going this time.
I think this thread is so wide due to the text of the hyperlink in reply #67. Maybe Mario could edit that post and change the text of the link to something else while keeping the hyperlink the same.
(If you need to know how to do it Matt, just put the contents of the link in place of
LINK
, using the following syntax: [ url =
LINK
] Text [ / url ] - I put spaces in there so it wouldn't actually create link in my post. Remove the spaces when/if you edit the link. HTH. )

Ok I am back
ended up working in Las Wages with a bad case of strep throat
So this is the deal, we are on for the April 3rd. Lets say we start meeting around 9:00 am. I will have coffee and donuts ready. Any suggestions for lunch? Pizza, Subway? Does some one want to bring soda, beer or you favorite work beverage?
We need a final head count for who all is attending.. Ivan and I have everything set up. Ivan call me on Tuesday and maybe we can go check everything at the garage and see if there is anything we need to bring just in case. Good work… on getting all the parts organized. I can fit about 4 Avs in the garage at once. I have one large propane heater if we can get one more it sure wouldn’t hurt.
Chuck your not going to be making this one are you? I don’t know what kind of honeymoon that would make

I'm there, where every there is, lol. I was swearing this weekend about that tail gate, locking and unlocking the darn thing.
Ivan, the ones we are putting in, do they work off the key chain like the one on that other link? Or do they just work with the door locks?
I guess we need to exchange some cell phone numbers via email in case I...errrr...someone gets lost
.

Chris - Tailgate lock will work with the door locks. SOOO if you can unlock the doors with the keychain remote (we all can) then tailgate will unlock as well.
I have mine setup to unlock with passenger doors (second button press on keychain remote).
Matt - I might be able to help out with the heater situation. We have a (large) number of them at the cabin since we have been working weekends this winter. Had I know I would have brought one home with me yesterday. Might be back up there to drop off a new entertainment center and maybe another fridge next weekend and could pick one up them. If not I have one in Loveland I could use. Oh my cousin has one just 2 miles from where we are doing the GTG if we need it. I will make sure I can use that if needed. Matt - I can put away a few donuts...
don't tempt me!

Matt,
That sucks - being sick and having to work in Vegas. But you did get to play a little, didn't ya? We were just there 2 weeks ago.
Count me in for the MOD GTG. I'll have to leave the Springs at dark o'clock but I'll get there! (I've been to Longmont twice for - the wifey's side - family reunion.)
Had you already sent out the address in an email? I am combing thru my emails and I can't find anything but I vaguely remember reading something about an address. I think.

I really am liking the sail lights, thinking the 5mm reds, I can order these from superbrightleds.com seems the shipping is the same regardless of quantity, so if anyone would like me to add you to my order let me know....from what I have been reading, the ship fairly quickly, so if ya can let me know by the 20th, should be good for the mod GTG...april 3rd?
looks like they are 2.49 per light 8 lights needed. so roughly 20 bucks.
last chance, anyone else besides RMS for these:

If there is anyone coming to the GTG just there to hang out and does not plan to do these mods we are planning... I have a good porter cable RO buffer I can bring. (let me know if I should bring it) If you don't care to take part in the mods, but still want to spend some time hanging out and plan to detail the AV - this buffer and the pad set I have (you will need to wash them out when done) will make you
at what a great job and how easy it makes things. Do a little compound action to take out any swirls, apply some wax and polish it up. You will need to bring your own supplies like wax and compound, but this buffer is da bomb.

I know the GTG is still a week away and I hope everyone appreciates what NORTH CO. AV (providing the shop) and _gadget_ (ordering parts & know how) have done setting up everything. Also... since I won't be able to attend I want lots and lots of PICS!
PS - When is the next MOD GTG planned?

I know Matt was going to get directions - he said it's off HW 52 which is about exit 236 on I-25.
Matt and I were going to meet over there last week, but he could not be pulled away from the Nuggets game...
J/K Matt.
Sounds like it's going to be a pretty good turn out - I think about 8 or 9 so far are in. Yeah, someone (or three) are going to have to take lots of pictures so you you can all pass along these mod instructions to the mass of people that go "woah, how did your tailgate unlock and lights come on all by themselves" You can teach them.

Greetings all, I thought it was time to give you the official address of the GTG for April 3 2005.
Click here for Map Quest link
5050 Ne County Line Rd Erie, CO 80516-9317, basically if you are coming from Denver or lands south you will take I-25 north the Dacono- Erie exit (#235)
Then go west till you come to County Line Rd 1 turn left (south) go one mile and it will be on you left. There are a group of houses that have a common driveway pull in there. Once you pull in we are the 1st house/driveway on the right. There should be a large group of cars (there will be a sign that says Bible Baptist Church) Your there!
Please send me a PM so I can get a head count. I hope my mapquest link works
Thanks

Not too sure how to post this, but this is for anyone who is going to the GTG.
I had ordered two stickers for the front bow tie, I still have one that hasn't been used.
Anyone interested? It goes on the existing gold bow tie.....first to respond that wants it and will be at the GTG gets it:

I hate to jinx us but the weather report says 64 and sunny for Sunday!!!
Hey Jim,
This may sound crazy and I'm sure my neighbors think I am nutz but before I wax the Av I use 2in" wide painters tape and tape off the cladding. Fortunately it looks if you own a WBH so you do not have as much to tape off...........
And I think I waxed mine shortly after I brought it home from the lot. The folks at the dealership did a sweet job but I just had to fondle the Av
I am a Meguiar's fan!! I use Meguiar's wax, tire shine, etc......

I think we decided on 9:00am and directions are above.
You can wax the day you buy your truck. Get a clay bar kit!!!
Wax - well that is up to you! Everyone says different things as to best wax/polish made. I used Zaino for the last couple cars and am due for another application here soon on the AV. Might want to verify with Matt on the water situation (don't know if you will need to bring a hose and bucket or what) and don't know what the shade situation will be like either you do NOT want to wax out in the direct sunlight. So do you want me to bring my RO buffer and some wax bonnets for you? I have some wax, (I think I have an almost full bottle of meguiers gold here in the garage I used to wax my parents car last week) but you might want something else.
As far as car part stores - I don't know for sure where the nearest places to that would be.

If you want to use Zaino -
my writeup is located here
I can bring it, but it's a LONG process for that. I can let you use what I have. You are going to seal the paint, so you need to make sure you have ALL dirt/tar/dust/water spots off the paint before you apply or you could seal them in forever. Minerals in the water spots if sealed in can etch away your clear coat, so it's vital you have the car VERY clean before you bust out the zaino. If you want PM or call me and we can discuss. If you do use zaino - direct sun is actually good - you want to let it bake on.

OK, those on the tailgate lock list should have all gotten instructions for either split or non-split methods in their E-mail.
Any other lurkers out there who might want to join us - come on out! Will be great to meet everyone and you will see none of these things are hard or scary once we start. If you want to do some of these mods and we still have time we can make it work, it might require you to hook up a couple special parts after the GTG once more parts can be found or ordered, but you are not alone. I think 4-5 more people
have contacted me and asked about the mod GTG and have said now they wished they had ordered parts. (see I told you that you were not alone)
Well, I should have some extra generic parts like wire, connectors, loom and wire ties, so if there is still time then lets get your truck ready and I can get more parts ordered on Monday or something. Just PM Matt for his headcount so you don't eat all MY do-nuts!
Even if we don't have time, you will know how to do it yourself at home which will take 1/3 the time once you see these mods done once.

Ok it looks like we are good to go
. In addition to what Ivan has suggested if you can bring a Sawhorse to set the tailgates on, that will help tremendously also wash the underneath back will make for a cleaner work process.
The garage we are using is my churches and they do have some junk in the garage that needs to be cleared out to give us working room. If I could get a / or a couple of volunteers that would be willing to meet me and help me get thing set up it would be greatly appreciated.
I will be there around 8 am If I am correct we have about 9 people showing up.
I will bring doughnuts and we can discuss lunch now or the day of.
Lets all hope the weatherman is right it looks like a nice weekend planned

D'oh! I thought no one had responded since my last post because I did not get any email notifications. Guess you have to check the box every time to keep getting notified, dang it. Been too busy at work for any browsing during the day and hadn't gotten on in the evening, either. (Is that enough excuses?
)
Yep, I jump on I-25 and head straight up... Does "The Mart" refer to Wal-mart? Sounds fine to me! Can I see it before I get to the exit? I'd hate to miss it and have to back track. I'm not very familiar with much north of the I-25/I-225 interchange. And do you have an FRS radio?
Can't wait. Can't wait.

I'm looking to caravan up. My home and cell phone numbers are both on the list that Chuck maintains, if you want to call.
Otherwise, do you want to just try and meet as you suggested at The Mart?
Any idea what time we would need to meet at The Mart in order to make it to the GTG by 9am? (As gadget pointed out, it's Spring Ahead time, so we don't want to be late.)
I planned on leaving here by 6am. Which might make me early. I'm trying to remember how long it takes us to get to Longmont for the family reunions...I want to say a little over 2 hours.
Mikro, I always use E-470 to get to and from the airport but as you mention, Sunday morning should not be bad for using I-25.

Joe - I am estimating that it should take about an hour from Castle Rock. I gathered a few things together and am planning on heading up. I am lucky I caught up on the Coorado Board this morning. I plan on TRYING to leave the house a little before 8:00 MDT.
I will finally get to test my Dell Axim GPS for the first time. My truck is filthy since I had to do things around the house and watch basketball all day.

Steve,
Thanks for the estimate. I set my clock ahead but forgot to set the alarm. For some reason, I just woke up. I figure I'll be leaving here in about 15 minutes, 6:45am or so.
As I get close to Castle Rock, I'll give your cell phone a call...

Hey, thanks for the pics! And I will second that:
BIG thanks to Matt for being such a great host and another BIG thanks Ivan for getting all the parts, sharing the knowledge, and spending all the time to help us out! (I know he was one busy man today. Thanks to you too, Joy. Wink )
Big piece of advice for Chuck: skin your tailgate. Chris/Paul's and Ryan's went much faster than mine. The final adjustment figured out for mine was a bugger. Wayne got me straightened out, tho. thumbs_up
And thanks to Jerry and Tom for "flying" for lunch.
It was great to get to meet the folks I hadn't met before: Matt, Mike and Cheryl, Jim, Jerry, Tom, Wayne and David.
And it was great to see the ones I had met before: Steve, Ivan, Chris and Paul, Ryan, and Tom (Tom, sorry it didn't work out for you today.)
I hope I got everyone. Flog me if I forgot you.
And I hope Matt's tailgate got done. When I got home and was unloading, my heart sank when I saw the 18" drill bit. I started to get sick. Then I realized that you guys were probably doing the split method so the long drill bit was not essential. Whew!
Here are a couple of pics I took. First one is Jerry (pdxkevin's dad) and Tom (pdxkevin's brother) trying to escape without getting their picture taken.
Second is Wayne and Steve's Avys. There were too many to line up in the one section so they had to park over to the side.
Regards,
-Joe

And here is one right at the beginning of Chris and Paul's tailgate getting skinned. Chris tried to back totally out of the pic but I got a little bit of her!
Anyone else's face get sunburned and lips get chapped? And to think that I was a little chilly when we started out...

Look's like a great GTG! I see some familar faces in that crowd, too. Namely, my Dad and brother.
I wish we could have been there.

man, after sitting at ivan's house wondering where everyone was, then finally finding the correct location (thanks to ivan's wife!), i was already an hour late and work was underway. i knew i was way down the list to get started so i decided it just wasn't my day and packed it in.
i should've stayed just to get better acquainted with all you great folks but i had some "opportunities" back at the house.
thanks ivan for buying the stuff and hope all went well with everyone's truck. i'll hold on to my parts til i get time to properly try to sort things out.
hey, when's our first drive and where are we going?

First off, Thanks to Matt & Ivan for everything!!!!!
I cannot believe how well it was organized and how much I learned! Anyone need a gate skinned? By the time we got to our 4th one, I think we had it skinned and re-skinned in under an hour!
I had an absolute blast!! Just one suggestion, let's not forget the beer next time, lol. By 9:15 at night, a cold one would have tasted mighty fine!
It was nice to see the new faces and really nice to see the old ones, LOL! All the trucks looked nice and can you believe at one point there were 11? Wow! Our little club is starting to take form, I love it!
I can't believe I didn't get any pictures of Mike & Cheryls sail lights! They turned out great and we all learned about how to do ours......thanks to their trials and tribulations. Our next mod we will be able to install those puppies lickety-quick!
And the 12 volt, now I get it
. I "need" one of those too now.
My pin lights work awesome, had to check them again last night when we got home then again this morning when I got up. They will come in so handy, great choice! Thanks to my hubby and Matt for working so hard to get them working perfectly!!

It was awesome meeting everyone!!

What a great day!! It was fantastic meeting all of you yesterday...my head is still spining from all that I learned and experienced.
Matt, thank you for your hospitality...what a great facillity for making mods.
Ivan, now I know where you got the name "Gadget". You have all the neat tools (and knowledge) for doing all the mods anyone would ever want to do. Let me know when you can get an actuator for me to make the tailgate mod. I will definitley do the same way that you did on yours and Chris's. It's too bad that the short cut of not "skinning the gate" didn't work out as well. Sorry that I had to leave before eveyone was done.
The pictures are a great reminder of the whole day...thank you all for sharing them. I'm sure that the members that couldn't make it are very envious.
Thanks agian to all of you for the experience of the day. I am looking forward to our next gtg!

Thanks for the pics!
(This must be pdxkevin's dad or brother, eh?
)
You can notice in the pic with my 12v outlet and cargo light over-ride switch, there is a little bit of blue paint on the bed liner. This is from when I sprayed it on the exposed metal after cutting the (first) hole for the switch. I wasn't real worried about overspray, just trying to keep it from rusting.
You can also see the blank I installed to the side of the switch - do not cut a hole there! One layer of metal behind the liner separates from the other right there and it makes it impossible to put a nut on the back of the switch. Lowe's had that blank that just barely fit the hole.

-Joe

Oh sorry for not answering, Chuck, the directions that Ivan mailed out will probably suffice.
We just need to write something up for splitting the tailgate. Warm weather, I think, was the key to a fairly quick turn around there.
I think we do need to do another one of these MOD GTGs again soon, to get you set up (we can do that camera install at the same time), Tom set up with his stuff, and David (EXT owner) set up with his lights. Oh, and the air bags for RMS, too.

I agree, Joe, I wouldn't mind another Mod GTG!!
Chuck (who is probably scared to death right now, the night before his wedding) we can get that tailgate skinned and put back together in less than an hour.
Hey, Matt, you up to organize again? Gadget?? We couldn't do it without you!
