Ambers 101 – Attention NEWBIES - Everything You Need To Know About “AMBERS”

“Ambers” is the popular conversion of changing out the white 4114K factory Daytime Running Lamps (“DRL’s”) to AMBER bulbs. This “mod” <modification> is a popular Chevy Avalanche Fan Club conversion used to identify other club members. It is also really neat-looking, PLUS it is actually a safety enhancement as amber light is visible at a further distance. (Amber is the color to which the human eye is most sensitive.) Some vehicles such as Corvettes, Buicks and Chevy Vans are factory equipped with Ambers. However, check your local laws as some localities are very specific about what you can and cannot do as far as making changes to automotive lighting.

Now – on to accomplishing the AMBERS mod’s.

If you have the plastic skirting all around your Av, you have a CLADDED (aka “Body Hardware”) Av. If you have NO CLADDING you have a WBH –or- “Without Body Hardware” Av. (GM terminologies.)

The procedure for changing the DRL’s is different for each of the two models.

On the CLADDED Av, your DRL’s are located within the lowest part of your front bumper and are the INBOARD lights (closest to the tow hooks.) Switch on your fog lamps while the LOW BEAM headlamps are on and the transmission is in PARK. The DRL’s are the extinguished lights next to the fog lights. NOTE: The fog lights will normally switch off whenever the HIGH BEAMS are on.

On the WBH Av, your DRL’s are located within the set of lights below the headlamps. The DRL’s are the INBOARD lamps (closest to the grille.) Switch on your parking lights while the transmission is in PARK and the DRL’s are the extinguished lamps adjacent to the parking lights.

Amber bulbs to purchase <for either model of Av> are Sylvania 3157/4157NALL. A pair can be obtained at certain auto parts stores for around $5.50 or so. Do NOT pay $10 for these bulbs, as some other parts stores (who will remain unnamed) charge.

CLADDED Av’s. From beneath the bumper, depress the lock tang on the DRL socket and turn 1/4 turn, pull socket out of housing. Remove factory bulb and replace with the amber. Reinstall socket (turn to lock.)

WBH Av’s. Open hood. Remove “L” shaped shiny aluminum retainer pins from the tops of left and right headlamp assemblies. Carefully lift assemblies up and out of the way. (Do NOT disconnect any of their sockets/wiring.) Reach down to the DRL socket and depress its lock tang, then turn socket 1/4 turn, pull socket out of housing. Remove factory bulb and replace with the amber. Reinstall DRL socket (turn to lock) and reinstall headlamp assemblies. You may have to fuss a bit when reinstalling the driver’s side headlamp assembly as the wiring may need to be positioned to allow clearance. Very easy to do, just do not force anything. The headlamp retainer pins may utilize a slotted tab at the top of the assemblies in which to ‘lock’ the pins in place.

CHECKING YOUR DRL’s.

BE FREAKING CAREFUL whenever you do this using method “B”!

Your DRL’s will normally only be on in daylight (NOT inside your garage,) with the engine running and in DRIVE, NOT in PARK. The DRL’s will switch off when the transmission is placed into PARK.

Method A) The safest method is to drive somewhere to observe the reflection of your Av in a glass window. Go to a local business, or convenience store (you need beer anyway, right?) Check DRL operation in drive, with the engine running, footbrake applied.

Method B) You can also check DRL operation by placing your Av in DRIVE on a flat, open area, and engaging the parking brake. Get out and observe the DRL’s. DO NOT walk directly in front in case the brake slips. Or you can have someone stay in the driver’s seat, depressing the brake pedal while you make your check.

Method B) is not recommended unless you live out in the boonies, as method A) is so easy and safe.

Method C) You can monitor DRL operation during the course of normal driving. At traffic lights you can often see a reflection off the back of a vehicle in front of you. This is an easy method for monitoring lamp status to determine a burnout. They should last quite a few years as the "NALL’s" are long-life bulbs.

Follow up notes.

A) The amber bulbs will not burn your sockets or plastic lamp housings. When you go to change them from the factory bulbs, you may notice a very slight ‘burnt’ look to the base of the sockets. This is noted to occur on the factory sockets with factory bulbs and is not to be of any concern to you. Lamp sockets which have just a little use (a brand new Av, for example, with only a few hours of running) may exhibit the slightly burnt-looking socket condition. Simply ignore this non-issue.

B) The description of how the DRL’s and headlamps operate during daytime, as told in the above instructions, assumes that you have an original factory electrical wiring setup. Other modifications, such as “Full Time DRL’s” (or “All Time DRL’s”) and “All Four-On Headlamps” changes the way the DRL’s and headlamps operate compared to the original factory set up.
You can do a search on the CAFCNA site to learn more about these additional modifications.

[   Hey, maybe we should have a LINKY THINGY to "AMBERS" off the web site main page. Wink   ]

Test method (b) should only be used if your wife has a camcorder taping the fiasco that is about to happen.

I do believe there are some television shows that still pay good money for a funny home video....

this one should stay at the top of the new, unread posts.  I rarely make it to the homepage and only read older ones if I'm searching for a specific answer.

As a side note...the amber bulbs ARE NOT exclusive to CAFCNA. Ambers signify "Avalanche Enthusiast". Members of other clubs and many people who are not active on any Avalanche website use Amber DRLs. (There are about 10 people in the Jacksonville, FL area alone have ambers that are not on any of the communities.)

I know have seen two Chevy standard pickups around my area with amber DRL's. One truck was blue, the other white. I wonder if they did that from a sudden thought popping into their heads, or actually got the idea from seeing an Av enthusiast around . . . . .

Those ambers really stand out, don't they  Grin

Wow this gets stickied, but when I put together all of the directions for 02 FullTimes (to help people find the instructions quick), I was told to pack sand...

How 'bout sticky-ing the directions for FullTimes for all models right below this thread? Or some of the work done by Autoworker, XRover, and WesTexAVY?

This can be made a little safer by leaving the ignition on, but without the engine running.

This seems to work best with clean dark colored vehicles that have smooth rear sheet metal. A black pickup truck tailgate works great. thumbs_up

No, it doesn't work with '02. Also, something in the back of my mind says that they will turn off if the parking brake is set for an '02. (Or is that just the automatic headlights and not the DRL? Not sure, I'll have to check that next time I go out, as I'm too lazy to pull it out of the garage to test it right now. goofy )

Also, for '03 and later, I think the lights that come on with the remote is something that can be configured using the Driver Information Center, so if they don't come on when you click the unlock button, check the perimiter lighting settings.

Horn & lights are a DIC setting, when others had thier strobes and stuff on a couple of us just kept clicking our unlock for some GTG night photos. I've given away ambers to a few coworkers, they offered to pay and I told them to just JOIN THE CLUB.

Now my Question is, the bulbs themselves dont look to be amber in color. Did i get the wrong bulbs?

Yep, wrong bulbs. Take a look at your turn signal bulbs, how the bulb itself looks amber or yellow when it is off. You want the exact same bulbs for your DRLs.

Some bigger stores have the amber bulbs out on the racks along with the clear bulbs. Other stores you have to ask at the parts counter for them.

If they give you a hard time that you really want the clear ones for the DRLs, just tell them you want the bulbs for the turn signals... and then put them in the DRLs.

What is the difference between the 3157NA and the 4157NA then?

Minor specifications change. For all practical purposes they are the same. In fact, many times you will see a bulb that has both numbers on the package.

More imporant than the first digit of 3 or 4 is to try to get them with LL as the last two letters. That means Long Life, and they should last longer than plain ones.

First choice: 3157NALL/4157NALL
Second choice: 3157NA/4157NA
Last choice 3157A/4157A

The difference between the A and NA is a matter of choice. A is a lighter yellow, NA is a darker orange. I think the NA or NALL looks better, and matches my turn signals. I had 3157A originally, and they looked pale compared to the turn signals, and didn't last very long.

Is there any brighter alternative?

I bought two Titan AMbers from Stylin concpets - both blew out almost immediately and shattered in my hand when I went to swap the OEM whites back in.

They were supposed to be brighter . . . . didn't have them in and on long enough to tell.

Well I put my ambers in and they don't work.  banghead When I first got my truck last week only one side worked (with the white bulbs in) So I just thought it was a burnt bulb and thought great time for ambers.  Put them in no problem but now neither seem to work.

My truck went back to where I got it from yesterday to fix a few minor things and the DRL thing was brought up, they said they changed the bulbs (taking out my ambers) and cleaned the sockets.  Now I can't seem to get either to work once again.

Could there be a bigger problem or what?  It's an 02 Avy... My main DRL's work just not my small ones next to my fogs (closest to the toe hooks)

Any ideas?

Might just be operator error? Wink

First off, what do you mean by main DRLs? There is only one set of DRLs on the truck, which for a cladded Av is the small trapezoidal pair of lights inboard of the round foglights, closest to the recovery hooks. (You say you have a 2002, so by default you have a cladded Av since the naked version didn't exist yet in 2002.)

It is hard to test the proper functioning of the DRLs without a helper, or without looking at the reflection of the truck in a store window or the smooth sheet metal of a dark car in front of you.

For 2002, all of the following must be true for the DRLs to be on, some are more obvious than others:
  • It must be daylight
  • The light sensor on top of the dash must see sufficient light for a sufficent length of time (20-30 seconds) for the auto headlight system to think it is daytime.
  • The headlights and parking lights must be off. (Headlight switch in the auto position)
  • The ignition must be on
  • The transmission must be in gear (not in park)
  • The parking brake must be released
  • The auto headlight disable must not have been engaged by pressing the dome override button four times quickly.
If any of these conditions are not true, the DRLs will probably not be on. (Unless you did something like the full time DRL mod or otherwise changed the way they work.)

Odds are the problem is that the truck is in park, the parking brake is set, or the headlights or parking lights are on from some reason (auto headlights or manual switch.)

Since the ignition needs to be on, the truck needs to be out of park, and the parking brake needs to be off, the only safe way you are going to see them on yourself is if you have a helper in the truck holding the brake pedal down so the truck doesn't roll, or by looking at a reflection of the lights while you are in the truck keeping it under control.

Most of the time when someone says their DRLs don't work at all, they are either looking at the wrong bulbs, or they have the truck in park which will force them to be off.

I hope this helps. If they still don't work after checking all of the steps above, then we have some diagnosing to do.

Wow, thanks for all the typing.  I thought the headlights that auto come on are also considered DRL's.  With both my Blazer and now my Avy I never turn on my manual lights cause the auto ones come on, I thought those were DRL...guess not!

Anyhoot, I going to have someone check those lights because today I thought I caught a glance of my reflection with them on.  So I'm sure it's just an operator error.

Thanks and I'll keep ya posted.

Interesting coincidence... I also had a Blazer before the Av, and I also haven't had to turn on my headlights in something like 7 years. On the rare occasion that I drive the wife's car, I sometimes drive at night without the lights on because I forget that you have to actually turn the knob to get light! goofy

While they are both controlled by the computer, and the light sensor plays into it, what you are thinking of are the automatic headlights. The DRLs and the auto headlights are basically opposites of each other. If the light sensor sees light, it turns on the DRLs and turns off the headlights. If the sensor sees dark, it does the opposite.

So, in theory, the DRLs should be on whenever the headlights are off, but there are a few additional requirements for the DRLs, as I stated above. The most common mistake, which bites a lot of people, is to put the transmission in park, hop out to check the lights, and they are not on. banghead

Have a helper sit in the truck and keep the regular brake pedal pressed while shifting out of park. Then revel in the resulting amber glow. Cool!

Far anybody that cares, well even if you don't care  Cheesy , the "NA", which I always thought was "New Amber" stands for "Natural Amber". I ran across this in my '96 Explorer Owner's Manual recently. Yep, it has 3157NA for front turn and parking lights. Almost 10yrs old, that's pretty "LL" even if they aren't. Wink

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear it wasn't a bigger problem. You'd be surprised how many people get tripped up on that and think they aren't working, when in reality all is good.

Been browsing here for a couple weeks now. My first mod were the ambers of course  Cheesy

I keep seeing postings where people tell you how see them, from getting behind a car to going to a store and seeing them in the glass.

I noticed that if I just hit the unlock on my remote in the dark, the ambers come on then as well.

Just FYI

I just swapped mine out and followed the very good directions. It was a breeze.
As a safety precaution on checking them out, you can set your parking brake and put the AV in neutral. Works great.

I'm a real newbie to the club and love my Av.

Excelent guide.

I did this mod about a week or so ago and it took about 30 minutes to complete(that included the time it took to go 0.1 miles to AutoZone and back).  FYI--The bulbs cost $5.

I put my ambers in last night in all of about 10 minutes of install time.    I had a little trouble figuring out why I would have to take out the battery to replace the bulbs.. then I saw the metal pole that comes out of the top headlamp to get behind the headlamps.

next on my list is the rear sail lighted screw mod.

I noticed that if I just hit the unlock on my remote in the dark, the ambers come on then as well.

As other's have said, that's a feature introduced in '03, and doesn't apply to '02. Also, on the '03 and later models, it is part of the perimeter lighting option, which can be customized with the DIC steering wheel controls. Exactly what are your options, I'm not sure as I have a '02, but some people may have customized their settings so that this doesn't work for them.

As a safety precaution on checking them out, you can set your parking brake and put the AV in neutral. Works great.

Now I was under the impression that setting the parking brake turned them off. Maybe that is just on '02 models? Or something in the back of my mind says that setting the parking brake before turning on the ignition turns off the auto headlights (and DRLs) but setting the parking brake AFTER turning on the ignition doesn't?

I'm so confused...  Huh I'm going to have to test this tomorrow when it is daylight...

I just added them the other day.  The bulb holder came out with no problem, but getting the bulbs out were a PITA.  Am I the only one that had 2 plastic clips top and bottom that hold the plastic part of the bulb in?  I used 2 small screwdrivers to hold them out and needed an extra hand to pull the bulb out.  One bulb was broken, so I had to pull that one out with pliers.  Just suprized no one else had any issues with it...

The pic was taken at night in the underground parking lot at my building.  I got the DRL to turn on my either unlocking or locking(I can't remember off the top of my head) my doors with the keyless entry.

I think I read on these boards that the keyless entry trick to turn on the DRL for a minute or so only works on 04 & 05 avalanches that are WBH.  It might only be '05 WBH.

I know '04-'05 at night (or if it's dark enough) unlock turns on DRLs. Doesn't matter if it's WBH but you can change entry/exit settings if you have a DIC. I think '03 is the same, I'm unsure about '06.

I'm thoroughly confused about all this AMBER DRL talk.
First of all, can someone explain to me why the DRL bulbs are Dual Filiment? The way I see them, is they're either on during the day, or they're off at night. Am I missing something? When and how does the High filiment come on?

And the picture shown below that was taken at night is not showing the DRL's as AMBER, but the headlights are Amber in this pic. So what am I missing here?

I removed one of my DRL bulbs yesterday, and it was a 4114K. I tested it and it had a regular output and a high output filiment. Yet, regardless of how I put it back in the socket, only the regular filiment lit up. Huh I'm lost. Can anyone shed some light (no pun intended) on this?

I finally bought ACDSee so I can crop and get these pics within the limit.
Enjoy.

Nice look.  Just went out and bought me some ambers ($4.99, no sales tax in Delaware).  Took all of 5 minutes with the instructions given here.  Good looking out avalanCHEVY.  Also, the help with the part number made it 100% easier...... Cool!

I'm looking for instructions for converting my DRL's to Full Time, on a 2005 AV with body armor. I found the article for 2002's but it keeps referring to the fact that it's ONLY for 2002's.  But it was written in 2002. So is it still valid, or is there a more current version? Can anyone point me to a more current version?

TIA,

Jay

UPDATE: Since asking above question, I opened the fusebox, and the 2002 directions DO NOT APPLY to an '05. Wires are in different places. So........I really need help finding a more current article for converting to FULL TIME DRL's.  Anyone?Huh

What a pain in the ass!  I have an 03 Avi, without cladding.  I got behind the headlight fine, got the bulb out with it's plastic socket....But cannot get the bulb out of this stupid plastic socket.   ...Whats the trick here?  There are two clips on each side holding the bulb in place.  I'm afraid if I pry to hard I'm either going to break a clip, or the bulb.

HELP!

I just used 2 little screwdrivers on each side to loosen the clips.  Once you get the pressure off the bulb it slides right out.  I am not sure if there is a tool you can buy that releases the clips but 2 small flatheads will work just fine(or it did for me).  Just play with it and don't just yank them out.

Good luck bro.

Alright mission completed!  You're right it wasn't too bad once I had the right tools (2 small screwdrivers), an extra hand came in handy too.

They look great!

If anyone else has any problems getting the stock bulbs out like I did at first all I did was squeeze the base of the bulb and it popped right out with no tools.  If you look at them there is a little gap at the bottom and just push it together and it comes right out..........my $0.02

I just bought my AV (used). I don't know how much mod'ing I'll be doing, 'cause I'm not comfortable with vehicle mechanics.

I installed the Amber bulbs with no trouble. The advice on bulb type and instructions for accessing my cladded AV were great.

This weekend, I hope to follow along the 'Always on' for dummies post.

I also have the 3357/3457ALL in my WBH. I thought they looked lighter and brighter than the 3157's did. Never had one of each in to compare.

someone around here gave it a shot.  I remember them being very disappointed in the ones they got.  They didn't reflect well in the DRL housing and looked dim.  Might have just been that set of LEDs though...  Let us know how it works out if you give it a shot!

Went and got some 4157s for my 07 today.  I took the 2 10mm bolts out and got the headlamp assembly loose but I couldn't get it completely out.  Messed with it a while but never got it.  The owners manual was worthless.  It was getting dark so I had to quit.  Any tricks to it?

Anyone else ever use Sylvania 3757's for their amber DRL's?  I was using "generic" 3157's, and one burned out, so I decided to get a darker amber bulb, and found the 3757's.  They are the same ones that you would use for the parking lights/blinkers in the front.

I had to cut the notch on the bulb (so only the middle on the notch stayed) to get it to fit properly.

I also figured out that having if a bulb doesn't light up, I had to turn it around 180 and it worked fine.  And it's much brighter!

And now i went out on an errand and saw that i had no more DRL's!!! Whats the deal? They were working yesterday durring the day and also last night. What happened? I did disconnect the battery does that have to do anything with it?

If you haven't reconnected your battery, try that.   Beating

If that doesn't work, try giving the bulbs a 180 spin in the socket.  When I put mine in, only one worked, but neither was "blown".  I did a 180 on the one that wasn't working, and it started working.

Well the truck started up so im pretty sure the battery is working. Yesterday i put every under the electrical box back to normal(i did the move one wire down method for my 02) and the DRL's are back to normal now. I just wish they were on full time cuz when they did work it looked pretty sweet.

I had my DRLs wired to be turning signals along with the stock parking lights w/o turn signal.  After a few months I wanted to try a different look, no parking lights, just DRLs and stock turning signals, so I did some rewiring, and now both DRL elements are own all the time.  Makes them extremely bright and looks great at night.

Heat was a concern as well, but I haven't done any extensive driving since I rewired them.

I've had my ambers installed in the VA Beach area now for just over 1 year. I went to the dealer last week for my "free" state inspection and they pulled my ambers and installed the factory clear bulbs. The technician stated that it's against Virginia state law to have anything but clear DRLs. So I'm out $6 for the clears and $19.90 for the install (and he didn't give me my ambers back). Needless to say, I replaced the clears with new ambers the next day and after about an hour on the Internet, I pulled up the Virginia State Code and found no "color" specification for DRLs. I bit the bullet on the cost, but next time I go in for inspection, I will just put the clears back in for 1 day.

Ambers 101 – Attention NEWBIES - Everything You Need To Know About “AMBERS”

<Snip>

WBH Av’s.

<Snip>

This does not apply to the '07 AV's!!! Shocked You can partially remove the headlight assembly on the '07 to get to the DRLs by removing the two upper headlight assembly mount bolts and sliding a well padded lever between the side marker housing and the fender, breaking the lower headlight assembly mount in the process (there are two alignment pins on the headlight assembly that fit into the fender assembly that do a great job of keeping the headlight assembly in place).

I followed AvalanChevy's instructions for the WBH and discovered that the directions were not meant for the '07, so owners of the '07 beware!!!  I now have the Ambers and a couple of paint chips to touch up, but after all it is a TRUCK, so I am not sweating the small stuff.

Hope to see your AVs out there!!!

Cheers,
Stephen

Any advice???

Okay, another question regarding the amber drl.  The store sold me 3157 NA LL bulbs when I told them what I was doing.  Before I tear into things tomorrow, can someone verify if these are correct.  I would hate to be in the middle of things and have to get to the store for new ones.

Thanks again.

Duane

Yep, those work too!  Good luck!

The bulbs that are in are 4114K if you put in 3157/4157NALL will it have any affect on the electrical system (overload blow a fuse to much current.) Void the warranty

Nope, no problems, no effects & no warrantee issues.  I've had them in my 05 since I bought her and that was 14 months and 40k miles ago!

I just wanted to say what a great safety innovation that running the Amber DRL'S are, this was a very excellent idea!  I joined this club on the 22nd of October of this year, and read through the posts for hours.  By the 23rd, I had changed over to the Ambers, they look great and more importantly, others can see the AVE., much easier than the ho hu white DRL'S, that most vehicles run.  Keep those excellent mods., coming, we can't put a dollar factor on our personal safety, "Have A Bandit Day"!

Just did mine last week with high intensity GE star 3157's. Looks great. Of course as soon as I did that, I liked the Star's better than the originals and had to do the turn signal/parking lights with the same set. At $10 a set.... Mod the mod!

Great write up... did mine in a matter of minutes... only problem was I went to get SilverStar ambers for the DRL's and signals... and I ended up getting those and having a new 40 series flowmaster installed with new tips.

The silverstar are nice, they even have a nice look when the light is off, gives a kind of multi color halo effect. Much brighter than the stock. So much so that I replaced my turn signal lights so they would match.

i recommend using Silver Star amber's.  they look cool.  they have a blue/ silver tint to them when not in use.  i just replaced my parklight amber's with them.

Yeah but do they burn out after 150 hours like the headlight bulbs do?

Amberized mine on 3/14/2007. I should have done it when one of the clear ones burned out last summer.

Today 3/20/2007 I received my amber LED's and installed them. In the process I cleaned the inside of the DRL lense with simple green sprayed on a 1" foam brush.

They are now clean and clear.

Noobie here and I may have a problem.

Just bought an 05 cladded and my driving lights are not coming on no matter what I do. With my wife in the drivers seat, switching from park to drive to reverse, the lights next to the fog lamps do not come on. Tried changing one to an amber and still nothing. Any suggestions or advice? Help me!

Sounds like a blown DRL fuse to me.  Also, make sure your auto headlights aren't coming on, when it gets dark enough for the auto headlights to engage your DRL's won't come on.

press the dome overide button 4 times or until you hear a chime then you will have manual lights. just turn the dial from the O to the headlight.

Here's a weird question.  Huh

Why do my turn signal lights both come on when the headlights come on when it's dark?  They're not on in the daytime with my DRL's but are when it's dark.

I have FTR DRL's so my DRL's and my turn signals are on at the same time.  I have just noticed this lately.

I did the FT DRL mod using the diode method over a year ago.

What could it be?

Here's a weird question.  Huh

Why do my turn signal lights both come on when the headlights come on when it's dark?  They're not on in the daytime with my DRL's but are when it's dark.

I have FTR DRL's so my DRL's and my turn signals are on at the same time.  I have just noticed this lately.

I did the FT DRL mod using the diode method over a year ago.

What could it be?

I also believe that it is normal.  Your parking lights, low beams, are energized when your headlights are turned on.  So naturally you have your FTDRLs on always and your parking lights on at night.  So all four amber lights should be one.  I didn't like the look of all 4 amber lights being on at the same time, so now my parking lights only function as turn signal lights, while my DRL are on all the time.

Using a set of relays....there was another post that showed something similar. I'll have to see if I can find it.  I think just cutting the low beam wire would produce the same affect.

Here are the effects...

Regular headlights and fog lights on.  Only the DRL are illuminated and not the running lights.

Left turn signal.

Got a question.  In the very first post on this thread, it says to use Sylvania part # 3157/4157NALL.  Then in another post on the thread I see to use 3157.  What is the difference between 3157 and 4157???  Thanks.

Nope they are the same!  There are actually a few bulb types that will work and they all look pretty similar. The Sylvania bulbs will say 3157/4157 cause both bulbs are the same. GE bulbs say one or the other I believe. The NALL identifies that it is a long life amber bulb.

Question: I would like the deeper amber color, which bulbs should I get?
I've found the Sylvania branded "4157NALL" bulbs have a deeper amber color, more of an orange. The cheaper bulbs I've tried have a paler more yellow look, and also burned out faster.

The "NA" portion of the number stands for Natural Amber, which is the deeper color, while the "LL" portion is Long Life.

For anyone interested, I noticed how to check / photograph your ambers without any assistance.

On my 2006, I simply set the parking brake (normal) and then shifted the truck to neutral.

Hence a nice picture of ambers.

So far no one has appeared to notice  - but I have noticed how many don't have ambers.

Good idea....and it does appear that most people don't notice the difference in the DRLs, or at least don't say anything about.  But looks good to me...... Thumbs up!

Two things:

First: I tried the suggestion above about putting the parking break on and then put it in nuetral - problem is with my 2002 when I put on the PB the lights turn off!!  banghead

Second: I need to figure out where I can store my pics to link them here.  I think I have about 10 mg of space on my personal ISP account, so I may try that route...once I get a picture that is.

I guess I'll have to ask someone for  Help me! getting the picture.

OK, I got ambers yesterday, and the install instructions posted only apply up to 2006, so can anyone  send me the instructions for an '07? It looks like you have to remove the front bumper to get at the light housing.

THANKS Wildfire, and a H-U-G-E thanks to MongoRanger! I was at the dealer today, and they were completely amazed that the design was so complicated (They hadn't seen any burnouts yet, and I may be the only member in Prescott).

I have a 2007 LS- no fog lights :(

I am wanting to add the amber fogs but have no clue how to do it.   I took off the covers where the fogs would go but no wires.   How do I set them up and what kind do I get to make them fit in the easiest.  :help:

Ambers go in the daytime running lights, not fogs.  So you don't need fogs to run them.

As for getting fogs into your LS... not sure what it takes but it doesn't sound like a simple task. Might even need a new bumper cover for it to fit properly.

Thanks for the info- I'm a new avy owner.

Just switched out the DRLs to amber- have to wait until tomorrow though.  It got too dark to see them.

As for the fog's, if anyone has some feedback I could certainly use some! :help:

It is definitely possible to get fogs. You can measure the gap & see if you can find some fog housings that fit. If you can't find any, you can look for ones that are similar in size & have the bumper cut.

Or you can look for the OEM GM fogs. That would be your best bet. Try Ebay or gmpartsdirect.com or your dealer (even though they may take you to the cleaners). Then you can switch them out to HIDs if you want more light.

It actually just came to mind that some have used the Halo fogs. I believe on an 07 too. Hmm, who was that?

Stupid question on my '03 cladded - I can't get the bulbs out of the socket!  I got the sockets out, but the bulbs are stuck in there.   I'm afraid to pull too hard and break the bulb in my hand (I was pulling pretty hard though. )  What am I missing??

Never mind - I got it.   The trick is 2 small screwdrivers on the WIDE part of the bulb to release the clips.   Cool mod.  :)

you might want to put a little dielectric grease on them, they shouldn't be that hard to pull out

Yeah, that would have been a good idea, wouldn't it...  Oh well - next time.  Don't know why the stock bulbs were so hard to get out.

You have to rotate the bulbs about a quarter turn then pull out. When you get them out you'll probably say to yourself O why didnt i think of that.

Hello! fellow club members, I have a question that I been trying to find out by reading all the ambers posts available here, I saw a pair of 3457 nice amber looking lights. and I since I am already missing one since the last rain we had here in Az, some water got into my DRL's and burned out my amber bulb, Ok so the question I been looking for is, Can I use like 3057's or the 3457's in replacement of the 3157/4157's? I compared them side by side and they are really similar in size, the only thing I don't know is if they are compatible with our trucks. They are also cheaper.  But that is not the reason, I like the deep tone, yellow color they emit, compared to the ones I currently have.

Yes, you can, but you will need to cut off one of the little nubs on the connector of the bulb, where it goes into the slot.  Then check your ambers to make sure they come on.  If not, flip each bulb 180 degrees in the socket, and test again.

I used the same bulbs....

3457's - I think 3157's (or 4157's) are the "normal" ones.

One thing you can do is take out one of the bulbs you have now, and get the same part # - just make sue to get the "NALL" bulbs (Natural Amber, Long Life)

New to the club today.   I installed the ambers in my 2002 avalanche but i cant the ambers to turn on just the outside white ones.  Anybody know why?  Thanks in Advance

Since It's a bit off topic for this thread, diagnosing why your DRLs are not working has been split off into a new topic here: DRLs out on 2002 Av

What a great idea!

I  noticed in one of the posts someone mentioned some burning or scorching at the base of the bulb.    I have seen this on my other GM vehicles, sometimes to the point where the light would no longer make contact with the plug.

Solution, by a tube of dielectric grease and apply some to the base of a new bulb.    End of problem.
