I can not believe they are still using a design I found in my first Chevy, 1975 K5 Blazer. I went through at least 7 of them over 18 years. I used to go to the junk yard and get them, use it for a year or so and then replace it again.

Simple design, but it is probably placed in the housing that is now in the passenger foot well.

Look for a couple of hex headed nut screws and pull out a funny looking piece with a few spring like thingys (thanks YGGM). You'll find one or more burnt off or very discolored ones.

I think I may have attempted to re-solder them once ot twice, but it never worked out. Junk yards were much cheaper than OEM from GM and no one back then, through '92 anyway, ever had the part.

I've been doing a lot of re-soldering tonight!

I just saw the posting with the rest of the nomenclature. I forgot to add there will be a wire loom clip going into it also. That's the stuff!

For 2002 the GM part number is 89018597(thanks wildfire), You do not have to take the dash apart, it is under the glove box just remove the screws in the middle and on the right JUST loosen the one on the left, then just let the cover rest on the floor, replys #16 - 17 have good pics of what you will see.

Great thread!

I had to replace my wife's Cavalier's resister and I was afraid it was going to be that hard.  The Cavalier had it behind the fan, horrible placement and hard to reach.

Looks like the AV is going to be a piece of cake.   Thanks to all the great posters on this thread.  Thanks everybody!!

Thanks everybody, especially everyone who posted pictures, part numbers, and prices.  I got my fan working again.  Only took about 30 minutes in the 35 degree temps we were having today in Michigan!

I had to remove the round cap covering the blower motor to get to the plug, and surprisingly it was easy to gt back on.  I thought for sure it wouldn't be.

Also, for 2002 owners, this might be a good time to replace the HVAC air filters since the main cover is off.

Replaced the resistor today. The old one looked just like the pic on reply #26. It appears to be moisture damaged the electrical pathways on the circuit board.  While I was in there I changed the cabin filters.  Oh yeah.... $48.00 for the resistor from the dealer.   chevy

That design was changed in the 03 AUTO Air and likely prior MY's using that system. Manual A/C fans use the resistor still in the 03 (likely for the next few MY's too).

The AUTO air uses a solid-state relay-like device. A MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor), configured to vary the on/of time (duty cycle) of the blower motor. In the Av, it's in the (AUTO AIR) HVAC controller, in the Trailblazer, it's in the UBEC and looks like the other relays.

Hello all!

I have an 05 that stopped blowing air while it was 113 degrees outside banghead.  I still have power to the controls and I can hear the clutch kick in.  So I am guessing that this is my problem as well?

Will it be the same part #?

Are the parts Dept's open on Sundays? If not where can a guy get after market ones?

Thanks!!!

ETA: the air is not computer controlled, just the normal old style.

OK pulled it out,  It melted the big black wire in this plug.  Where would I find the burned fuse?

My resistor:

What do I need to do to get my A/C working ASAP again?

*Bump* I just wanted to bring this thread back up...

I went to pump gas today. Waited in line chillin with the AC on. Pumped gas, started up,  and the HAVC fan didn't work on any of the speeds. 10 minutes of diagnostics in the parking lot of BJ's and I ruled out the fuse, and the HVAC controls. I yanked off the Passenger floor HVAC access cover, gave the wiring harness under the resistor pack a jiggle and it miraculously started working again. I want to investigate the root cause of failure. I detected sparking/arking in the wire bundle at the connector. There is a gremlin there and I want to expose him before I slay him! Incedentally Yes I was able to get it working there in the parking lot. Why should a man suffer on the 2nd hottest day of the summer in Baltimore. I mean I work in a kitchen but still!
Anyway I am bumping this thread just in case I need to go parts shopping tomorrow

Oh Yeah I certainly found this picture in my truck today...

The black wire grounded out on the resistor pack. I ended up having to replace one resistor pack at a little under $50 without my gm wholesale discount... but there was no way I was traveling back from Baltimore to NC without AC! However I did get the satisfaction of fixing it right in the driveway of the dealership. I would have done it in less than 20 minutes. But I had to dig out the semi melted metropack connector on the black wire and replace that. The dealership was cool they threw that in for free. Well it was either that or fight the computer for 5 minutes to figure out how much i costed. To think someone might have paid their dealership to diagnose "HVAC blower motor failure" Then charge them $150. BLAH chevy

thanks guys for all your help!

i have an 03 and the blower quit today at all speeds.  thats ok it was only 107 today!  i had the same problem with the meltdown on that black connector, except about half of it was melted.  that explains the burning smell

after searching and finding this post i diagnosed it in about 5 minutes.

thanks again for your help!

ok i bought a new resistor for $49.00.  i also needed the black connector plug because it had melted also.  it was only $95.00!!!  thats right $95.00!  couldnt believe it.  i was thinking he was reading it wrong, more like 95 cents!  its just a plastic plug with some wire leads.  i still thought he was wrong so i called all chevy dealerships in town and the same price is what i found.

when i called henserson chevy, they said $95.00, but we can do better then that.  he sold it to me for 80 which i thought was very nice.

anyway i got it installed and now speed 5 doesnt work.  i figure they must have sold me the wrong resistor.  i gave him the part number listed in this thread and he said its no good.  i will go back tomorrow and see what i can find out and be sure to post the results.

ok got it fixed.

while installing the new connector plug, i touched some metal and it shorted out, blowing the 40 amp fuse under the hood.  i replaced that and now all five speeds work.  from what i understand,  the resistor controls speeds 1-4, and speed five basically bypasses the resistor for direct battery power, which comes from that 40 amp fuse under the hood.  those fuses have a clear top so you can see if they are blown.

for the 03 av 1500 the resistor part number is- 89019089 and was $49.00.

i dont know what the part number is for the connector plug since i threw out the bag it came in. i do know it cost $95.00.

the dealer said that they sell one a day at least.  i guess they go out often but they say this is a new one that should fix the problem.

hope this helps someone in the future!

PM me if you have any more questions.

thanks

didn't want to start another topic.    .    .    .    but I have a 03 Av 1500 4x4 40,000 miles .    .    .    .    it has Manual ac/heater controls (ticks on dial)

My problem is the blower has a mind of it own.    .    draining battery, like everyone else's.    .

I need to replace the Resistor.    .    .    right? I don't have a Blower control Module, because it not climate control.    .    .    just making sure

My deal is with the 40 amp fuse OUT the 1 -4 speed work, just not the 5th speed.    .    .    .    .    do I still need to replace the resistor, as last poster said resistor controls 1-4.    .    .    .    .

also I have the 03 part number.    .    .    but should I get a 7/32 wrench?

any help before I start replacing

I missed this, I will have to run through the checks you suggested.    Local shop said 4 hrs job to replace, had to remove dash, air bags.   .   ect

the funny thing is the heat works with settings 1 thru 4 , just not 5 with the 40amp blower fuse removed and this also stops the blower as well.    somehow the blower  is still becoming energized, with the car off and key removed???

Is this the same fix if my problem is an annoying sound coming from the passenger side vent.  I have an '03 but all the fan selections work.  This noise is constant and the car doesn't need to be running in order for it to start.  As soon as I turn the key some kind of power starts this noise.  But it is definitely coming from the same area.  PLEASE HELP as I had just purchased this truck and the dealer doesn't seem to want to chase a noise and rip apart the dashboard.

Thanks....  I am new to this board and purchased my '03 Spiral Grey Avalanche, with only 29K miles a couple of weeks ago.

i lost speeds 1-3 on my 04 found this thread and got it fixed.

Just a side note i went to partsource and they gave me the part for $31 i went to install it and it didnt fit in the bracket so i went to the stealership and they gave me the part for $71 and it also didnt fit. The guy looked on the screen and finally saw a note that said u may not be able to use the bracket so u just throw the new resistor on.

So the cheaper part was probably the right one and i just went with the oem cuz i ran out of time to do this

Slagfest, what was the part number you got for the 04?  30.00 sounds pretty good to me.

I'll have to take a look at what my resistor looks like now.

Partsource just asked for make and model and gave me the resistor..when i went back i gave em the partnumber 89018596 as its listed earlier in this thread and they couldnt find a listing in their computer.

When i saw the oem one at the dealership and saw it wouldnt fit the bracket i told him the part number and he said the one he just gave me was the one.

this is what my resistor looked like

Unfortunately, I am not able ot see a lot of the pictures posted in the forums...just white boxes.

I will check with Checker today on part and replace it in their parking lot.

Checker didn't have one in stock.  Does this one look like yours?

its hard to tell the difference of those two on that website. only difference i see is the holes for the bolts. The only specific question i was asked from partsource was if i had the auxillary heater for the rear seats which i dont.

dealership only had the one listing

I called my dealer before posting and they asked me for my VIN number to determine which part as they have two.

I don't know that mine ever worked, always just thought it was a real gentle air flow with a real quiet fan...not the sharpest crayon in the box, but that must mean i get used a lot banghead

I was having an issue with my blower motor and took the advice found here.  Unfortunately it didn't match my circumstances.

In my 2004 1500 Z71 with cladding I have dual temperature control.  The fan setting is determined by tick marks on a digital screen.  There are probably 12 ticks total (just guessing).  Up until a little while ago, my blower would only work when the highest two tick marks were illuminated.

I went to a local auto parts store and picked up the Blower Motor Resistor based on the general description of my truck.  The resistor looks like the one in the haynes manual as well as the ones pictured in this thread.

When I removed the blower motor cover (two screws with a 7mm nut head), I immediately found out that my resistor wasn't the same as the one I bought.  For grins, I decided to see how hard it was to unclip the wire fasteners of the in place resistor.  It was hard and I didn't get them apart (either connector).

I then unscrewed the resistor to see what the burnt one looked like (two 5.5mm nut headed screws) (I doubt nut headed is a correct term, but give me some latitude here  Roll Eyes).  What I saw baffled me.  Maybe you guys can give some thoughts.

Interestingly, after installing everything back together, I started the truck to reposition it in the garage and apparently I did something to make the blower motor work again Huh

Anyway, I replied earlier that the chevy dealership said there were two part numbers for my year.  I guess I shouldn't have doubted them.  The part number given to me based on my VIN number was 89018778.

Hope someone has some info for me and that this provides some others some info as well.

Thank you so much for this thread!!! I lost all fan settings except for the highest setting. The resistor is a bit more pricey up here in Canada ($70). I did look at aftermarket resistors and was told that they don't fit properly. So I stuck with AC Delco was able to get the resistors switched out within 30 minutes!  Thumbs up!

So glad I found this thread. Fan on my '03 Avy only worked on 3-5 until the other day when 3 went out as well. $37 later and 30 minutes of my time and all is well

TCR1 - I have the same thing as you.  I took mine out, and the metal heat sink thing looked corroded, so I cleaned it a bit with a screwdriver (scraped the corrosion off), and put it back in.  It helped a little, but I think I still need to replace it.  Heading out to Advance Auto now to see if they have the part, as I need to pick up some Silverstar Ultra's anyway...
