I don't think that anyone has these yet. The silverstars have a higher color temperature, but the HIR's might put out slightly more light.
Here is an interseting article with tests of different bulbs
including Silverstar and HIR.
Let there be light

just found this thanks to another member in another thread...  you can get the new bulbs at Advance Auto for $35.88 at the time of purchase.  no mail-in rebate to deal with.  the best part is you come out spending less money this way.  i am going to see if they have military discount i can use in conjunction with the sale.

just got back from buying another set.  check this out...   i grabbed two of the mail-in rebate forms when i was a t AutoZone.  i am going to mail both forms, receipts, and upc's back for both sets of headlights.  hopefully i will get back $20 instead of the $10.  i don't see why not.  i will let you all if it works.

MichiganSilver03:

I would really be interested to hear your opinion on the "regular" SilverStars vs. the "Ultras".

THANKS

These are the ultras.  Things I notice the ultras are brighter you probably can't tell from the pic. The st are 51 watt  the su are 55 watt. The flash on the camera keep going off, My neighbor's thing I crazy enough taking pictures in the dark so I quit before the called the man with the net. Is it worth upgrading don't think so unless you have nightvision and glare problems like I do. Like the normal silverstars they really light up street signs and school buses or anything that reflects lights.

I would say that actual beam pattern and road output between the two bulbs would be a better comparison, but this is near impossible to "show" someone on the internet.

It's cool that you are risking going to jail for the forum  Beating

Off hand I would say stick with the normal Silverstar and leave the "Ultra" to the marketing gurus.

I've been buying Hella Xenons from www.rallylights.com for years, as they have always worked well for me. I use the Xenon Optilux XP(Purple) in both vehicles.

Thanks for the pics, and write up.

Just so I am clear, there is improved light down the road, vs "normal" SS?  Even if only slightly?

Yes the improvement is noticeable and by the way the 10.00 rebate is still on so the 35.88 is actually 25.88.

Tomorrow I will post pics of the 9011 hir that came with my AV against the 9005 SS that I have now and the 9006su.  I was disappointed with the 9005 SS the 9011 are much brighter but the white light of the 9005SS makes a big difference.

As I'm impressed with the test results of the hir version on http://www.bmwcca.org/members/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Let_There_Be_E36_Light, can you fill us in on your evaluation of the hir 9011 / 9012?

Bulbs are similar to stock , except that the hot spot is a little brighter and a little whiter.

Hey michigansilver was there a big difference in the intensity of the like from the silver stars to the ultras? I just went out and got the SS because my 02 stock was were horrible at night. I can already tell the SS are brighter and white instead of yellow. Should i bother to pay 15 bucks more and get the ultras?

I compared them to my moms 04 suburban and mine and hers are very close now but mine have a slight blue that you wouldnt notice unless you were comparing with someone elses lights.

OK I'm back, in  the first pic the 9011 is on the left and silverstar on the right  pardon the finger in the pic I was trying to block the flash.  The 9011 is brighter but yellow and has a broader light pattern. The silverstar makes streetsigns and anything reflective glow and the light seems brighter because it's white light.

The second pic is a 9005 silver ultra on the left  and a normal silver star on the right

I don't have my picture manager on this PC so I could not do much with the pictures don't know why the first picture is more yellow The SU and the SS are both 60 watt  but the SU are again sightly brighter as were the low's
Butterfingarz there is a 10 buck rebate on the ultra 's you can download from sylvanvia.com  it may be 15 buck now

Looks like there is a very small noticible change in the intensity of the lights. From the ultras to the SS. I did see that rebate you mentioned on their website but looks like they mail it to you and then will send you a bunch of junk mail. But for 10 bucks off why not, that 10 bucks off would have convinced me to buy the ultras in the first place.

they are working okay for me.  not what i really want (true HID retro-fit w/ modified headlamp housing, etc.).  i have a HID plug & play set at the house, but was not real impressed with it.  so for now the Silver Star Ultra's will do just fine.

In your opinion would your plug and play set be good enough for someone who's wife won't let him spend the money on an HID kit?   Undecided  Really, what was your problem with it?

Just wondering about the SS Bulbs install....., factory Bulbs 1st, I see that the low beam lens has a relector inside lens, has any1 tried to remove it,or does it have to stay there? For street legality sake? I see that both bulbs (factory) are almost the same wattage, 55w Low 60 w High ,and looks to me that the domed refelector inside lens kinda dims the bulb a bit with the factory low beamHalogen bulb,so as not to be a direct beam, like the high beam light would. So back to SS install do u just put them in and away u go or has any1 taken out the dommed reflector? Just wondering thanks Huh
