OK, since I'm the one that brought this particular possibility to light Smiley

I'll be trying it, on the fronts only for now, within the next week.  My 103K brakes are finally starting to get noisy and are looking a wee bit thin.

Front rotors are a touch over $100 each, slotted & drilled.  The matching ceramic pads are about $50 for the set.

Rear rotors is where it gets ugly.  325mm ones are around $130, the 330mm (likely what I have) are almost $170! each.

Pads are around $60 for the rear.

All totaled, this upgrade would run around 650 for the 330mm, 570 for the 325.  If these work as good as the ones I put on the Impala SS do, this will be one of the best bang for the buck upgrades, AND keeping it all GM.  Pads also carry a lifetime warranty, and I've used that on the Impala ones once (not for being worn out in total, just had a bad hose that was dragging a caliper and really wore out a side).

I'm not sure if the rotors carry a similar warranty, will find that out when mine arrive.

Details and pictures will accompany this when it happens.

Brakes aren't different between WBH and cladded, so yes.

This may be tomorrow's project.  Son is out of school, so I'm somewhat trapped at home entertaining him Smiley

Seems like a great time to rip in to the truck.

Me too.

If I get half the benefit of having put these on the Impala, this is a no-brainer.  PRobably cheaper than regular replacements, too.

Of course I still need to do rears.

Should also point out that I'll likely die from this upgrade, as the rotors are made in China.  The pads are from the good old U.S. of A.  Handling the rotors, however, will likely kill me from an overdose of lead paint or something.

Did you get new calipers or stock?

Before doing this please go test..

fill up truck..

find big place...

Get up to 60mph..
and slow to stop...

measure distance..

repeat few times to get good average..

then change out parts and repeat test..,

real world numbers.. or
do I need to call mythbusters to do this?

Call someone else.

I use a butt-o-meter for this kind of testing.

No new calipers, no need for them.

The butt-ometer states that there's a 40-50% improvement over where the truck was before the upgrade.  That would figure to be perhaps a 20-30% gain over OEM new brakes, in my opinion.

Matched with a set of rears (yes, I think I'll bite the bullet and order a set in a week or two), should be quite a notable improvement overall.

Pics and docs to follow.

We start with a picture of the stock setup.  Second image is the caliper mounting bolts, once removed.  Requires a T55 socket.

We follow this with the retaining bolts for the mounting bracket.  This bracket holds the caliper in place, and mounts the pads on sliders.  This bracket also keeps the rotor from coming off.  The second picture is a shot of the bracket, once removed.

A tip for removal of this bracket - turn the wheel to the opposite direction of the side you're working on.  This brings the rear of the brake assembly to you and makes it more accessible for this part.

I used an impact wrench as they were pretty darned tight.

The somewhat shiny pieces on the bracket are the sliders.  These are replaced.

Once the bracket is removed, the rotor comes straight off.  Do note that there may be retaining clips from assembly on one or two lugs.  I cut these off and discard them.

Second image is the caliper.  I was able to gently position it on the lower a-frame to support it without damaging the hose.

Now we have the new rotor, mounted.  Second image is the bracket with the new sliders.  These are to be lubed, in the Durastop kit there is a lube packet for this.

Important to note - there is a specific right and left rotor, not interchangeable.

Now we have the pads mounted in the bracket.  In my case, the OEM had two warning tabs on the outer pad.  The Durastops also did.  One on the inboard pad.

Next image is the caliper and bracket remounted.  Note that there are collapsible boots on the caliper retaining bolts - ensure these are not bunched up or torn.

Doug, did you order these from a local dealer or use a source from the site?

BTW, nice job by your son on the install pics and your unbiased review with the  ever so proven butt-o-meter.  Thumbs up!

Just came back from a trip to Tampa.

Have also had slotted & drilled Durastops on my Impala for 4-5 years now.  Wherever that rumor comes from, I've not experienced it at all.

Paint what? Smiley

It's filthy thanks to the road construction I endure daily.  It's also an everyday & work truck.  No need to make it purdy.

Stands are a bit further back under the chassis, just not visible in the pics.  I >NEVER< work without stands.

Water pump was fine as a writeup Tongue

Rears will need to be done.  Stupid rear rotors are more $, especially the 330mm.  The 325mm aren't that bad.  $40 difference per rotor.

Are 2 wheel drive brakes and 4 wheel drive the same? In other words are these available for 4 wheel drive?

Looks like a great job!  Be calm when you first drive them.

thanks for the great write-up,i ordered pads today but am still on the fence with the rotors, i have to admit the LOOK is excellent and you can't beat the 12 mo. warranty on the rotors.

Honestly, if you're wanting them just for the look, it'd be a waste of money unless you have different wheels.  They don't show through well.

Also, since you have a 2500, if memory serves you can only get Durastop slotted & drilled fronts.  You'd have to run through the catalog as well, to be 100% sure.

OK - the rears have arrived and are installed.  45 minutes for this set as I couldn't use air tools due to the arrangement of bolts banghead

We start with an image of the parts - first a rotor, then the pad kit.

The tools needed to remove the caliper bolts - 14mm socket on the bolt, 19mm wrench on the clip-like head.  Second picture shows what's left after removing the caliper.

Next up - the bolts that hold the pad and caliper bracket in place (pads are easily removed prior to removing these bolts).  Note that these are 18mm, which is a slightly uncommon size for the average toolbox.  They are also very tight due to factory threadlocker.  On the fronts I was able to use the trusty impact wrench on these corresponding bolts.  Here, it was breaker bar and brute force.  Bracket removed from truck in second image.

After pulling off the rotor, this is what the fortunate folks and those living in a gentler climate will see, nice clean, fresh, unrusted and unsiezed e-brake components and solid backing plates.

Finished product.

One note - when reassembling, I suggest pulling the caliper pin from the boot and applying fresh grease.

45-50mph panic stops - not a single bit of fade, and not a single bit of anti-lock engagement.

Stands the truck on its nose.

Total investment - around $600 and 1.25 hours.

That had to be from some of the road construction, the shock isn't leaking.  I couldn't really ID where it all came from, there was some splatter under that whole area.

well my brake parts are here,i work for a auto parts distributor so i ordered directly from raybestos, went with advance technology performance rotors and pads. install will be shortly, have to work around mother nature, UPDATE: one of the raybestos rotors i received was boxed wrong so i obtained a durastop replacement, notice the similarites.the durastop brake parts are made by raybestos. only reason i point it out is the durastop rotors are $129.79 and the raybestos are $106.79 @ www.rockauto.com

fronts are in!!!!!!!!!! i'll post pics of the finished install since doug covered it pretty well, apparently south of the border they use loctite in generous quantities, you'll need an impact and/or BIG breaker bar to over come the resistance, otherwise it's pretty straight forward.the results are well worth it: light pedal pressure and no fade at all, can't wait to start towing season!!     rears next...

Like I said, I've been hooked on them since I put them on the Impala.  That's honestly at least 7-8 years now.  I will drop these on any GM vehicle I have as soon as I eat through the original set.

just thought i'd add this...we recieved about 7 inches of the white stuff in the last 24,and the end of my street is a downhill slope, in the last 2 yrs. when braking on the slope there's a dip that causes one wheel to momentarily loose traction and subsequently the ABS kicks in with it's familiar growl!!! but alas no more!!! my wife and i drove around shopping , putting on 200 mi. and not once did i need ABS.could be the brakes now function as a balanced entity, none pulling any harder than the rest  Thumbs up!. iv'e always thought the oem brakes a little lacluster in ability.when towing i always put more power to the trailer brakes than probably needed just to compensate. out of all the mods, this ranks #1. a special thanks to doug for bringing this to light!! i thought the performance rotors were a "race car" gimmick and not beneficial to the street,  THANK DOUGD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thumbs up! Thumbs up! bring on the towing season!!!!!!!!!

Granted, I don't have the snow to use as a test for ABS Smiley  but I have YET to be able to kick the ABS in.

I too thought that slotted rotors were more appeance than function in a simple street vehicle, until I put these on the Impala.

Quite simply, any GM vehicle I own that has these available WILL have them as soon as the brakes need replacement OR as soon as I can convince my wife we need them

This is great information.

I'm coming from an Audi and a BMW car, so my wife and I are not too thrilled with our Avy's brakes.

Can you post the P/N's for the front and rear rotors, as well as which brand you used?  I've seen the Durastop ones and the Raybestos ones.  If I call an autoshop and ask for slotted/drilled rotors for my Avalanche, will I get either the Raybestos ones?  When modding my other cars, I've been told "that's not available for your vehicle" and it pisses me off.

So to keep the guys behind the counter unconfused, if I had the P/N's I needed for a 2005 Z71 Avy for all four corners and the pads for each that'd be great.

Thanks for that. I had been using the Avy as the vehicle of choice and I guess that is why I got limited results.  I did some searching on Raybestos site and found all the P/N's for the front that you did, but had a harder time with the rear.

Again, thank you for the information!!!!!

Honestly I'm not sure either.  I have those parts that jimbo provided, but I'm not at the point where I'll be doing this upgrade.  I'll research it in much more detail to find out exactly what I need before I do it.  When I get the information, I'll post what I find.

Can someone comment on the 325/330 nightmare? I remember going through this when I replaced my rear rotors the first time.  The rotors I had to go with appeared thicker (wider vent), but I don't remember if they were 325 or 330.  Is there a rhyme or reason to this, based on VIN?

I'd like to do this upgrade since it's time for new brakes, and would obviously like to get the right rotors the first time.  :D

BTW, this is a great site.  I've been lurking for about a week and picked up a bunch of tips on things that were bugging me about the AV.

Many believe, myself included, that Z66/Z71 gives you the bigger rotors.

Honestly, the best solution I know of is a visit to a dealer with your VIN to be sure, OR removing a rear rotor and measuring it.  Thickness and diameter are different - not just the diameter.

I have been trying to make heads or tails out of the info in this thread for about 4 days and when I go to the sites listed I can't find the exact numbers given. banghead

I have a '03 Z71 (4 wheel drive) w/17" wheels and I am wanting to upgrade to the slotted and drilled rotors (Frnt & RR) w/ceramic pads.

Could any of you give me the part numbers needed to order the set-ups for this application?

If you would email me at jcw1950@yahoo.com it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a '03 Z71 (4 wheel drive) w/17" wheels and I am wanting to upgrade to the slotted and drilled rotors (Frnt & RR) w/ceramic pads.

Could any of you give me the part numbers needed to order the set-ups for this application?

If you would email me at jcw1950@yahoo. com it would be greatly appreciated.

Sober, I too have an '03 Z71 (1500, right?).  Going by the pictures on the rockauto site, it looks like my truck gets the 330x96 rotors.  Your's probably will as well, though you may want to double check.  Now if you want to trust a newbie, I've just gone through the rockauto and acdelco sites and here's what I've come up with:

Raybestos parts:
ATD785C for front pads
ATD834C for rear pads
781PG for the parking brake shoe
ST56825L & R for the front rotors
ST56919L & R for the rear rotors

AC Delco parts:
17D785CH for front pads
17D834CH for rear pads
17781B for the parking brake shoe
18A1256 & 18A1257 for the front rotors (L&R)
18A1646 & 18A1647 for the rear rotors (L&R)

HTH,
John

Thanks John

I'm glad I asked cause that is completely different than what I came up with. I'll check your numbers and see if I can get them to come up.

BTW...what sites were you using to get those numbers?

Doug, with these rotor fit 17" wheels? I am planning a brake job and some other things for the end of March when my 3 child gets here. I figure I will take off of work for a week, and I can drive the wife's Suburban...allowing me about a week of down time on the AV....I have a 2500 so I would imagine the parts numbers and all are different. Just trying to do my research now.

I plan on one day going up to a 20" wheel, I just can't do a brake upgrade and new wheels and tires at once.

Stock sized rotors, I still run my stock wheels.

Should even work with a 16" wheel.

Aw hell, I will find out for myself.   chevy

$313 with shipping for pads and rotors for the front with the 897583795983 rock autodiscount code.

I was getting vibes empty coming down the mtn last time from Moab and got caught in Ski traffic, we will see if this helps.....

For running at combined weights of over 19k lb, I think it will be a good test.

Having put over 80K on these same rotors on my Impala, no issues.

 chevy

I had smoked them badly coming into Dillon a year or so ago and was getting some bad vibes when they got hot.

Next to the neighbours EXT

Pads were cracked

Look good...

Overall a very easy mod.  First impressions are mild,  they work fine, feel the same as before, but once they break in, it should be interesting.

I used an 18 mm, 20 mm (wrench and socket), 1/2" ratchet and breaker bar (Ran out of CO2 so no impact), a 10 mm to remove the brake line clips so I could set the caliper on the ground (have dropped them in the past working on trail repairs).  Took me a couple of hours, not bad for a parking lot break job.  A lot quicker then taking it somewhere.

Cheesy

BTW, this is a great site.  I've been lurking for about a week and picked up a bunch of tips on things that were bugging me about the AV.

John

Many believe, myself included, that Z66/Z71 gives you the bigger rotors.

Honestly, the best solution I know of is a visit to a dealer with your VIN to be sure, OR removing a rear rotor and measuring it.  Thickness and diameter are different - not just the diameter.

I believe the answer is that the 330mm rotors go on the rear ends that have a locker and the 325's go on all on all others. I will not bet the farm but it seems this way to me.........thoughts?

That would follow with Z66/Z71 having them, certainly.

It is kinda heavy stuff.

Take the prices and see if a local dealer will match or come close.

Tim to resurrect Doug's thread here.

I have an 05 Avalanche Z71, and I THINK I've got the P/N's right now.

Front Rotors    DESCRIPTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ST56825L      Brake Rotor      SUPERSTOP              HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    Raybestos Left; 6 Lug Wheels - 81.00
ST56825R     Brake Rotor     SUPERSTOP             HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    Raybestos Right; 6 Lug Wheels  - 81.00
18A1256       ROTOR,      FRT BRK DURASTOP PERFORMANC Left Hand
18A1257       ROTOR,      FRT BRK DURASTOP PERFORMANC Right Hand

Note Raybestos prices are lower than the ACDelco per rockauto and easier to get right now.

Front Pads    DESCRIPTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATD785C       (Ceramic)     Brake Pad Set    Advanced Technology       (Raybestos) - 75.00
17D785CH    (Ceramic)     Brake Pad Set    Advanced Technology       (AC Delco) - 69.00

Note: AC Delco prices lower for the front pads.

Any issue with mixing rotor/pads by brand?  I wouldn't think so.

I'm still not sure if I'd be doing the rear brakes.  Any noticeable gain by doing the rears?

Rear Rotors      DESCRIPTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ST56919L          Brake Rotor      SUPERSTOP              HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    Raybestos Left; 6 Lug Wheels - 144.00
ST56919R      Brake Rotor     SUPERSTOP             HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    Raybestos Right; 6 Lug Wheels - 144.00
18A1646           Brake Rotor      SUPERSTOP              HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    AC Delco Left; 6 Lug Wheels - 155.00
18A1647             Brake Rotor     SUPERSTOP             HIGH PERFORMANCE Notes:    AC Delco Right; 6 Lug Wheels - 155.00

Rear Pads         DESCRIPTION
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATD834C       (Ceramic)     Brake Pad Set    Advanced Technology       (Raybestos) - 61.00
17D834CH    (Ceramic)     Brake Pad Set    Advanced Technology       (AC Delco) - 62.00

For those of you that have done this, do these number look right?

It might be quite an assumption to expect it to be valid more than 6 months later.

Your best bet would be to go to acdelco.com to confirm the part numbers.

Following this logic I bought 320's as I have a plain old 1500 and of course when I took the rear wheel off  I see 330's? banghead

Does your Avalanche have a locker rear axle? It will have a code: G80 on the glove box door.........if so the logic is still in tact:

Nope, the locker can/could be ordered by itself but did come in the Z66 and the Z71 packages.

DougD,
How many miles do you have on you durastop brakes now? Any issues? Any noises and is there a lot of dust? Have you noticed any downside to the upgrade? Has the braking stayed the same, gotten better or gotten worse? Sorry to sound like a survey but Im trying to get more long term info before I do the upgrade otherwise Im just going to get a set of stock gm parts.

Over 30k thus far, the dusting is much less than factory pads (although my wheels are also coated which helps shed the dust), no change in braking.

Was going to replace the ole lady's Tahoe with Napa parts when I remembered this thread.  They don't offer cross drilled or slotted for the 07 yet so, I went with the Durastops front and rear (370 front rotors and pads with rear pads) was going to turn the fronts but with hair line cracks (Jerry at Sosebee Automotives said that they would be too weak and wouldn't turn them), just told her we would be better off replacing them.  07 Tahoe LTZ with 75k she hauls around a lot of stuff for work and travels frequently through out the month.  Thanks Doug and all for the posts.

thanks for putting up with my stupid questions

In reverse order - yes, they are the same - same manufacturer, different box.

Never done brakes, don't try it.  Start simple Smiley

I hope to do this by the fall.  But I already have some other mods waiting for me.  Shocks, new keys, audio, and some little things.

Ask them.  Every location is different.  Most likely won't install "customer provided parts"

Installed over the weekend.  initial reaction is that it is firmer and stops faster.
for those who  installed, did you do any kind of break in manuvers, such as several hard 60-0 stops?
thanks,
Jim

I did. I ended up with a dark layer on the rotors and it worked just as I was told that it would, much better stopping. I don't remember the routine, it seems like it was progressive with harder stops and shorter cool off times?

Mine have been on for several thousand miles, I wonder if I can do the same thing again and put a layer on the rotor to improve stopping again........it does not seem as good as when I did the install but I know they are not wore out yet.

The Raybestos ones that are the same as the Durastops?  Since Raybestos makes them, apparently Smiley

That is my understanding after reading through this post.  The rotors look the same as pics posted.  Pads are ceramic and come with sliders and silicone lube.

I think that you will be shocked how much better your Avalanche will stop after this upgrade! All brake pads have to be bedded-in with the rotors. Read up about burnishing the new brakes, I did it and boy did they stop great!

I think that I followed the instructions here:

http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

Maybe I modified it, seems like I worked my way up to the 60 mph stops by starting from 30, then 40 then 50 etc. Don't over do it or get them hotter than recommended...........when done make sure the brakes are cool before coming to a compleat stop or else you could end up with some pad transfer on the rotor that will give a shake when braking much like a warped rotor. When you are done you should see some of that transfer on the rotor but it will be smooth all the way around, this is what helps with the braking....

Well I guess we got the rotors and pads replaced just in time

This is the right rear that went metal to metal without warning.

The rotor is a little thin and not much left of the pad  Shocked

Here is the new rear Raybestos Advanced Technology rotor ......

And the old and new rear rotors side by side

The Raybestos rotor is narrower because It's the wrong rotor for my Av.

After allot of time on the phone arguing with customer support (and I mean allot) I had to purchase new rear rotors and pads then wait just over 3 weeks for a refund.

Heres the original and new front rotors side by side

And the finished look  Cool!

So far they seam to be allot better at stopping the Av although it's hard to tell as we had to drive metal to metal for 2 weeks, so anything would be better at stopping.  We like them so far.

Thanks for the original write up DougD  Thumbs up!

Sirshopolot:

Nice job, thanks for the pics  Thumbs up!

Question, how difficult do you think the job was (any comparison?)  Do you experience working on brakes?  I am contemplating doing myself, but have never worked on brakes before.

The last brake job I done was on my first car 24 years ago, so I had a buddy who helped.  Afterwards, I fully believe I could complete it on my own.  I would recommend getting some info from your parts store on the basics.  In my opinion someone with basic mechanical skill/aptitude can replace the brake pads on their Av with some basic hand tools.

JACKSTANDS!!!!!!

Thats a good point.  You'll need a good jack capable of lifting the 6,000+ pound Av high enough to remove the tires and a pair of jack stands.  Mine were placed just behind the wheel openings, under the frame rails. Thumbs up!

07+ are different, so you'd need to research what part numbers you need.  acdelco.com

ok replacing the rears pads should I go with the durastop golds or the gold cmax's? There both ceramic and 20 dollar difference.

also if I need to take both my rear rotors off and leave the avy like that for the night where should i put my jack stands to support the rear end? Im guessing before the trailing arm on the frame in the rear or can i put them under the axle?

What did they say to sell for the difference in price?  When it is comparable parts it is really up to you.

also if I need to take both my rear rotors off and leave the avy like that for the night where should i put my jack stands to support the rear end? Im guessing before the trailing arm on the frame in the rear or can i put them under the axle?

I would leave the stands under the frame rails so the axle will hang lower giving you more room to work on the breaks.  But if you want them under the axle you can.  If you have asphalt driveway put some wood under the stands or they may sink in the asphalt.

Good luck

If somebody could post up the year/model of your Avy, which parts you went with, and part numbers, that would make life a LOT easier.  Rockauto uses SO many abbreviations, I'm not sure of what I'd be ordering!

These are the numbers I've gotten.  Can anybody confirm if they are correct for a 2005 Z71 Avalanche?

If somebody could post up the year/model of your Avy, which parts you went with, and part numbers, that would make life a LOT easier.  Rockauto uses SO many abbreviations, I'm not sure of what I'd be ordering!

These are the numbers I've gotten.  Can anybody confirm if they are correct for a 2005 Z71 Avalanche?

I called them and asked what parts I needed for mine and still got the wrong rear rotors  banghead  So far; they weren't the easiest to deal with, but I'll let you know how it goes as I sent them back for a refund today.  If you call, give them your VIN # and have them look 'em up using that.

I went with the drilled and slotted Raybestos rotors and ceramic pads for my '04 Z71 4X4. Let me know if you want the part numbers & I will post them.

Heres what I ordered:

Raybestos Advanced Technology Drilled and Slotted Front Rotors
PN - 56825PL (Front Left)
PN - 56825PR (Front Right)

AC Delco DuraStop Drilled and Slotted Rear Rotors
PN - 18A1786 (Left Rear)
PN - 18A1787 (Right Rear)

and Raybestos Advanced Technology Ceramic Pads
PN - ATD785C (Front)
PN - ATD834C (Rear)

I had to go with the AC Delco rears because they were out of the Raybestos rotors.  banghead
This has taken over a month to resolve.  I will post the outcome when I hear from RockAuto after they receive the return.

What ever you do, double and triple check the part number of your rear rotors for your Avalanche!

I just bought my front rotors and pads from rockauto.  I got exactly what I needed.

I'm really pleased with the Raybestos brakes.  I must have got the last ones they had.

The confusing part is that Rockauto lists 56825PL AND a 56258PL part number.  The first is 95.79 and the second is 130.79.  Wanting to confirm that 56825PL and PR are the correct ones for an 05 Z71 WBH.

ARGH!

So many numbers, so few clues.

Did anybody do a brake fluid flush at the same time they did all this?  After watching Trucks! this past weekend, seeing that NASTY brake fluid, it has me wanting to do the flush too! Smiley

It has nothing to do with a WBH or cladded, what it does have to do with is if you have a locker rear differential.  Look in your glove box, if there is a G80 code then you will need the larger, more expensive rear rotors, I DON'T KNOW ABOUT PART NUMBERS..... the fronts on all 1500's are the same. This is the best information that I can figure out and so far it has worked for everyone!

I'll definitely be keeping it in mind when I get to the rear brakes.  They are looking about brand new.  The durastops will be replacing some warped and pulsating front rotors/pads.  So I have the time on the rears for now.

Yes, got the correct ones.  Received credit for one rotor so far, waiting to see if they post the refund for the other rotor and the pads on Monday.

Definitely tell a difference between the wrong ones and the correct ones.

Got the rears in on my 03 Z71 this weekend. The only difference on mine was to take the calipers off, I needed a 12mm socket and a 5/8 in wrench instead of what Doug posted. i got the Raybestos ones too.

Did the rear pads and rotors in the driveway couple weekends ago. Went with the duralast goldmax ceramics. Also duralast rotors. Slightly better braking but I'm sure just replacing worn pads and rotors will do that not the product. Pretty cheap too. 40 i think for rotors and 60 something for the pads. Saved $200 or more easily for dealership to do it.

Just FYI, Duralast is Autozone, Durastop isn't, and MUCH better

Anyone have part numbers for AC Delco / Raybestos for the 07+s?

Check out Royalty Rotors they are American made out of California and they have a lifetime warranty, just Google it for distributors and company information. If your going to spend the money on brakes take into consideration how long you are going to keep the Vehicle, it works for some but not others because of the cost involved. Awesome thread full of excellent brake information and pics...top notch.

How much of the front does the braking in the Avy? I think I may have warped rotors because my steering wheel vibrates when hitting the brakes at higher speeds so I am thinking of upgrading the brakes while I am at it. I only have about 57k miles on it so I don't really think the rears are that bad so I am thinking of just replacing the fronts.

I guess what I am getting at is if I put the upgraded brakes on the front and maybe never upgrade the brakes in the back will I see a big enough difference to warrant the extra cost?

Rear brakes tend to wear out faster which would lead one to beleive they do more of the braking.... but..

if you upgrade the front brakes you should upgrade the rear to ensure a balanced setup...

Interesting, I have never had a vehicle where the back brakes wear out faster. I wonder if that pads are smaller in the rear which makes it appear they wear quicker.

Anyway, I don't really want to spend a ton of money upgrading my brakes right now, but like I mentioned, the rotors seemed to be warped in the front because of some steering wheel and brake pedal pulsing that I am getting. So I am not even sure if the back brakes are that bad.

My opinion is that the rears wear out faster because of two things.....they tend to stick and drag more than the fronts for some  reason and they are smaller pads. Years ago the fronts would ware out first so I guess they made the rears smaller and now they wear......I am guessing hat the fronts still do most of the work.

Typically, your front brakes are the harder working ones.  I believe the brake bias in the Avalanche is overcompensated to the rear in an effort to balance the braking a bit better, thus contributing to the rear wear being accellerated in many cases.

Looking at the Rockauto site, I'm not seeing the P/N's below:

ST56825L - Super Stop / Drilled and Slotted (left)
ST56825R - Super Stop / Drilled and Slotted (right)

I did find ATD785C - ceramic pads.

Have the part numbers changed?  Doing a search for 56825* I find 56825R but no 56825L ... no ST in front.

EDIT: Okay, brain fart.  Those above are the old numbers, as pointed out a while back...

The 56825 PL and PR are the ones I'm needing.  I was thinking about the pads with the P in them thinking they were the police version.

So the list to order today would be:
56825PL
56825PR
ATD785C

I have had the Raybestos version of the durastop on for several months now and thought I would provide some feedback.
I did several break in runs (progressively firmer 60-0 stops) and then drove the avy normally.  the first month or so, the pedal felt better than the stock,
but not significantly better.  within the last month, the pedal has a firmer feel, so I guess there is some break in period required.
not very scientific feedback, but I am pleased with the performance now.

If you do a search for rockauto discount code, it is easy to find one. Wink

Right now, I'll be happy to get rid of the pulsation from the warped rotors/pads.

For those that have done both front and rear, did you do them at the same time or wait a bit for the back?  If you waited, how was the improvement once you did the rear brakes?  My immediate problem is the front, but curious to see if it is justified in the gains vs doing the back at some point.  As mentioned previously, the pads still look new (VERY little wear on them at all).

UPDATE:  I ordered these on Tuesday afternoon.  Paid for basic shipping (UPS I thought).  Thursday afternoon, they were on my front porch, shipped FedEX!!!  Verified all the part numbers, opened and inspected.  Looks like I'm ready to go!!!

SEXY!!!

Now a quick (STUPID) question.  Brake rotors labeled R go on the passenger side, correct?  I can never remember if it is the right side as you sit in the seat or as you look at it from the front... Smiley

Got them done.  Those pads go on the Chevy truck calipers rather weirdly.  Not that they were that hard, but they were more confusing than any brakes I've ever done, and that includes brakes from VW, Audi, BMW, and Pontiac.

Meh, got them done, but also painted em.  Here they are.

While they look orange, they are a nice bright red.  Initial impressions have the pulsation gone and I bedded them gradually up to 60-0 stops.  I'm sure they'll grab a bit better as I drive it more.  But braking feel is more linear and smooth than it was before.  As posted above, it is likely one of those things that gets a bit better once the pads are fully bedded.

Ok, I really want to do this Durastop upgrade but have been repeatedly told that ceramic brakes are not good for towing.  My 2500 is useed 90% of the time for towing.  Suggestions please....really tired of the poor braking of the truck and need to know options/reviews especially if you are towing.

Thanks,

Paul

What the heck...I just picked up some DuraStop pads at the local Chevy dealer where I have an account setup as a jobber and my cost on the pads was $77. The retail for $85. I checked the prices on the rotors and they were over $200. Is this dealer priced out of line or has the price more than doubled since this thread started?Huh Anyone know the part number for the Raybestos rotors for the rear on an '06 Z71?  Oh, the other thing that surprised me was that the rotor for one side is about $18 more than the other....

Thanks!

Had the Durastop Gold Ceramics on for a bit now and they definitely cause more dust than the AC Delco's they replaced with little to no difference in braking performance.  If I would do it again I would save your money, not worth it.
