AVALANCHE DYNO WARS
2008 Nationals GTG

So, you think you’ve got the most powerful Avalanche or maybe just more power then the one next to yours or just wondering how much power your AV makes? Well, its time to find out!!!

Date: 25th, must be there by 9:00am
Event Coordinator: Lord Aries
Event Judges/Officials: Air Cooled Classics

I am working closely with a local Dyno shop in Knoxville called Air Cooled Classics to make this event a reality at the 2008 Nationals.

Air Cooled Classics has set us with a price of $80.00 per truck for three pulls and a print out of the runs!!!! The date is reserved, we can show up with as little as 5 trucks or as many as 12.

Event Info

RULES - Based on experience at other similar events (subject to change)

Each competitor will get Two runs with a Ten minute break between the runs for a quick cool down. You will NOT be able to adjust your set up in anyway once on the Dyno, the best of two runs is your judged run to be compared to the other competitors in your class. Both Horse Power and Torque numbers are taken into consideration for the judged runs. Judged runs will be made in 2nd gear or equivlent.

Your two runs will be scheduled to take place at a certain time of day to allow pursuit of other activities. If however you are not at the event at your scheduled time, you forfeit your runs unless the event coordinator can reschedule them later in the day.

Trucks will be set into a class when signing up but, Trucks will be inspected for class rating before being put on the Dyno at the event.

Classes (subject to change):

Stock+: Cold Air Intake and Exhaust ONLY.
*1500 and 2500 AV’s will not be in the same class

Hot Stock: Tune, Cold Air Intake, Larger Throttle Body, Headers, Exhaust, Under Drive Pulley’s, Electric Fans, Basic Transmission Upgrades.
*1500 and 2500 AV’s will not be in the same class

Anyone have a set of 2 stock tires that I can bolt on for this?

Any chance of a discount for someone entering a second class?  I could run both Big Dog and Boost crazy if it weren't too expensive.  I'm betting that Trannyman and Loggie might also be interested.  Just a thought.

MainOne is considering this but wondering what class he would be in, Hot stock or Natural Breathers.

He has the original engine and it is naturally aspirated but it has had the cam changed in it.

KY, I think running in two classes would be ok... lets see how many trucks sign up and then we'll figure out a cost for that option.

MainOne's truck would fall into the Natural Breathers class due to the CAM. Hot Stock is all Basic Bolt-Ons and a CAM is not really a Basic Bolt On.

Also guys, its ok to change classes up to the day of the event if you do any mods between now and then that would affect your class rating.

You know me too well my friend I'm in  Thumbs up! Thumbs up!

Yes, I do.

I think that everyone is worried about having a truck make a good showing.  I know that you and I will pull out all stops to spin the rollers but the fun in this is having a crowd doint it.

Remember how much fun Bowling Green was?  We had 50-60 trucks hit the drag strip.  That was a blast even though I was running 17's.

This is about fun!

The rules of a Dyno War state that you CAN NOT make changes to your set up once on the Dyno, it's all or nothing once on the rollers...

That said, I am sure that running in two class will be ok, its just a matter of figuring out the cost. If there is enough time I am sure we could arange some Non Competition time to make a pull or two for Baselining after the event...

Also, You have got to PM with the required info to be in this. I need to keep a detail list of everyone in the event.

I'm assuming that it won't be a problem to have the laptop hooked up during the runs?  I'm also wondering if it's better to run with the converter locked or un locked?  That can be changed by one click.

Laptop should be fine, you want to be in 3rd Gear (1:1 gear) and Lock the converter if you have that ability.  When doing this with out a Laptop its a little tricky to roll onto the throttle just right so it does not down shift.

Is your software unlocked, could you plug into anyones Truck to lock the TC and trans into 3rd gear?
Actualy, Livernois can probably bring their GM Tech II with them for this pupose as well...

I can lock or unlock the converter on anything that it will plug into.  I'll have to look into being able to lock it into 3rd.

I can lock or unlock the converter on anything that it will plug into.  I'll have to look into being able to lock it into 3rd.

Are you sure they want us to make pulls in 3rd?  Won't some people hit their speed limiters?

You are supossed to a dyno pull in a 1:1 gear to get a real power number... You can do it in 2nd but, it won't be acurate...

We can use your laptop or a GM Tech II to disable the Speed limiter if we need to.

I can do it on any 02 but not the rest.  That requires flashing a new tune.

TCC lockup can be turned on or off through VCM scanner and it's not VIN specific, so I can do that on any vehicle.

Added new competitors!

FYI: To everyone talking about putting stock tires on to make more power... In the world of Dyno's and real street vehicles that is considering a Wusses way of cheating the game.  Unless its a drag car/truck, you run your set up just as you would on the street...

There is a special name for that type of vehicle when people do that, Dyno Queen and trust me you don't want that kind of reputation!!!

Watch this "queen" spin way over 400rwhp.

I have the use of 2 stock wheels and tires if I want to use them (thanks Quarter).  I may leave my everyday tires on it.  I'll figure it out between now and then.

Yes, it is!  Cheesy

I want to see more stock and mildly modded trucks in this.  Speaking of that, does a custom tune or handheld programmer knock a truck out of the "stock" class?  If so, that will effect a lot of people.

I would think yes.  But it would be nice to see the same truck with and without the tune.  Then we would have good evidence how much extra HP you get from one of those things.  I'd be willing to donate $50 toward it.  Any takers

Weight is not an issue on the Dyno because you are not moving that weight, you are only spinning the rollers... In Fact weight helps keep the tires from breaking loose on the Rollers!

What Aries said but to add to that, rotating weight is what hurts your dyno numbers.  It soaks up more power to spin heavier tires/wheels.

It would be interesting to see what a stock truck has for HP.  Hmmmm....I was planning on a tune before then, but I may wait and do that before/after idea to see if it really makes a difference.

Ok, add me to the stock class...pm enroute  Thumbs up!

P.S. A dyno Queen is a Dyno Queen. Period. No matter how much power it makes. Thumbs down  Hhmmmm I may have to have extra special stickers or something for the Dyno Queens!

You DO know there is a dragstrip less than 30 miles from where we are . I'm a definate yes, but I'm not quite sure of what my specs will be right now. Once I work out all the details with whatever engine I am putting in, I will send the specs.

There's no such thing as cheating when it comes to horsepower.  Our old saying when we were playing on the street was:

"Run what you brung and hope you brung enuff".

Actually, that would make a pretty good slogan for this event. idea

I guess my truck had a magic stock DS when i made my 6 pulls with it in 3rd gear to 130+mph...

I can't view the vids at work but, where these all Silverados in them? They have either a two piece DS OR one that is quite a bit longer then ours and the length of the DS can make a world of diffirence in the strength of the it...

But fine either way, if everyone is scared based on the vids then we will run in 2nd gear for the 4L60's and 4L80's and I'll have to use my closest gear in my 6spd to keep it fair.

Quote
Now before any of you get worried that this might happen to you, keep breathing. It probably won’t, and I’ll tell you why. Most of you don’t have 72” aluminum driveshafts.

Quote
Take a foot or 12” off (going down to 60”), you end up with a critical speed of 8935 RPM’s, which of course is not a problem. For those with 4WD, transfer cases use shorter shafts

that last quote sounds like the 4 of us (w/ 4wd), mine is even shorter w/ the 4L80E....thanks for links FB!

looks like not a lot to worry about...FWIW I have only been on 2 dynos, but have always done my pulls in 3rd (which makes the most sense to me).

I'm pulling in whatever gear everyone else is pulling in.

Opps...5 of us.

LA, maybe you should list who is 4wd and has a faster spinning driveshaft.

I'll come out and play. Hopefully someone runs a stock AV. I'm curious to see what my torque curve looks like compared to stock more than anything else. It's the towing thing ya know.

Thanks for the links on shafts and for the stock Dyno pic. Too bad it sounds like you're not going to be out playing that day.

OK a little off track but!
This will be on Fri and I am assuming that the off roading will be early in the week. I am guessing the AV's must be cleaned.

Also a good inspection of drive line! I have fractured u-joints slapping them on rocks before.

Also I guess I should really get under and inspect my Shaft as is I know it has been slid over some rocks Roll Eyes

and is there a parts store near buy (or dealer)?

Yes, you should inspect your drive shaft to make sure it is undamaged from any offroad adventures. Especially if you are getting a vibration over about 60mph and you know your tires are balanced.

As for cleaning, you don't want to be slinging mud everywere on the dyno or on everyone standing around thats for sure! I don't think Livernois wants to be cleaning mud out of the rollers either.  Tongue

Can we sling mud at one another the day we do go off-roading? Cause me personally, ya, well, I do want to sling mud at people. It's fun  Tongue

Desired Class:Hot Stock
Nitrous Y/N:N
Forced Induction Y/N:N

Should be a go! The price will be changed if the sponsors are willing to fund more of it. We'll know that by end of February with any luck.

Aries, are you going to call me a dyno queen if I show up with my regular wheels and tires but the rears are worn down slick?

(that's one way to lighten the rotating mass.)

OK, this was really a shameless bump to keep people interested.

Actualy your tires need to be with in Legal tread limits for saftey reasons on the dyno...

But yes, I will call your truck a Dyno Queen if you don't run with your AT's...

I've seen more than one street racer pull their alternator and power steering belts off just to race and then put them back on before driving back to town.

I'm going to run racing fuel Just kidding

It'll cost you a couple of hp unless you jack your timing up a little.  Give it a couple of degrees and you'll gain a little.  Thumbs up!

I may run a different brew in the meth injection. Cool!

I've seen more than one street racer pull their alternator and power steering belts off just to race and then put them back on before driving back to town.

It's an old school concept Smiley  The oil, belts, all of it.  Swaybar disconnected, etc.

I saw it when I was a little kid.  I'll try to learn from your age and wisdom.

If your street tires are worn below the legal tread they unsafe to be on the road, let alone a dyno! Common sense dude... oh wait... Tongue

Yes you get print outs AND I will have my Digi Video camera for vids for everyone too! I'll try to remember to bring a small laminator so that the sheets won't get messed up for some reason...

You mean last minute sign ups? SURE! As long as there is time to fit them in I don't see why not...

When I do up the plan and your time to be on the Dyno you will be expected there a few minutes early. More then likley you will have about a 1.5 hour window to be at the event:

- 30 Minutes for Tech Inspection
- 15 Minutes for tie down to the Dyno
- 45 Minutes for the actualy Dyno Runs

You will not have to stay after the you make your runs if you don't want too... Winners will be announced at the dinner with eveything else.

We have a little time. I know I can at least get PE dialed in a bit more realistically.
(Not pig rich like stock.)
Then there's always timing and torque management for us to work on. Drive!

Also, what all do people normally do with 45 minutes on the Dyno. Not trying to be a smart ass. Serious question.

I noticed that you don't have trannyman on the list.  Didn't he sign up?

When do you want the money?  I can paypal it or mail you a check at any time.

edit:  Oh yea, any update on the price of running a second class?  If it's going to be half price or so, sign me up for Boost Crazy also.  I'll run it without the spray.

I don't think he sent me a PM...Huh

The money will be due once we have a firgure on how much the event  we can get the sponsors to cover... I think 1/2 price to run in a second class is a fair price... We'll go with that for now.

I'm thinking about a super charger mod at Nationals (might be pushing my luck). But do you think that would change my class for this?

I figure a Magna Charger could be done because the PCM flash is done with a handheld tuner. A Kenne Bell requires the PCM to be sent to them, flashed and mailed back so I think that would be out. Not sure about a Whipple. Basically those are the three I have it narrowed down to right now. Anyway, I guess we'll see what happens. Not totally sure I want to throw a supercharger on the truck right before heading back to Iraq....

UPDATE: Pricing and such...

OK everyone, as I originally stated this event pricing is based on if we got sponsors to help pay for it. Well that’s not going to happen so, I am going to try my damnedest to talk them down further with my charming ways on the cost of the Dyno. I am hoping I can get them down a lot more since we should only need it for one day…

I’ll update again as soon as I know more…

UPDATE: Bad News

Due to lack of budgeting of sponsor funds, overall cost of this activity and not enough people signed up for it we will be unable to have the Portable Dyno at the GTG. I have done everything I can working with Livernois to make this happen but, there is just no way to get the cost down any lower. They have worked out a huge discount for us but, due to the above reasons it still isn’t enough.

I know you guys were really looking forward to this and Livernois has said that the dyno is still open to us for future GTG’s should be able to afford to do it.

Thanks

Update: Maybe we are still a go?!?!?!

OK guys, how would you all feel about making a 40 mile drive to Knoxville to run on a local Dyno? I've made contact with a shop there that is willing to work with us. I just need to talk to the boss there to work out a block of time for us and a group rate... THey sounded very interested in having us there and there Dyno is big enough to take the AV's...

Let me know!

OK guys here is the new deal…

Air Cooled Classics in Knoxville will give us EIGHT HOURS of unlimited access to their Dyno for $1,200.00!!!! They said they can handle up to 14 trucks three times in that time frame, they have done this before. This would still take place on Friday as originally planned, even though it won’t be on site were everyone can watch it will still be a lot of fun!!!! I will have a video camera and stills camera with me.

So, what I need is a real Commitment from who ever wants to do this so that I can split the cost up equally. As long as we have 12 trucks still going it will still be $100.00. I will handle the bulk payment end of it so, you can use paypal or a personal check to pay me and I’ll work everything out. This has to be paid in full, in advance and soon!

PLEASE let me know via PM if you are ready to commit by March 28th. Payment will be needed by April 11th…

Their address of Air Cooled Classics is :
10402 Lexington Dr
Knoxville, TN 37932

The drive to Knoxville is an easy 40 mile drive.  Especially when you get out of Sevierville and up to I-40.  Shouldn't be bad for those that are going.  You might even get a few to go watch. Wave

If you want sliders, you might look for a Cheesecake Factory in Knoxville.

BUMP

Now here is something i just found out, even if we don't get 12 trucks we can still go. I just have not worked out a price, should actualy be about the same I think because we will pay by the Truck per hour. So, I will call again today and see if we can at least reserve the date and pay individualy when we get there...

Ok to make this easy I have got the day reserved and all we have to do is show up with at least FIVE trucks and we will pay $80.00 per truck when we get there for 3 runs and print outs of all the runs. They are going to expect a max of TWELVE trucks just to be prepared.  Thumbs up!
