Last Monday evening I had the hard tonneau covers stolen on my Av.   The tailgate lock was "punched" to gain access.   I've heard of several other AV owners experiencing this particular theft but haven't seen any posts on it.   What's up with this?  They are expensive to replace costing nearly $900 for each segment.    Beware - park near lights, travelled areas.   I'm looking into a "jimmie jammer" for the tailgate lock to hopefully deter this kind of thing.

There is a "jimmy jammer" for the tailgate, I remember seeing it when I was looking at the ones for the doors.

gargoyleman - this happened along the Price corredor in Chandler.   The security guards at my building had warned me 3 weeks previously that they were being stolen in the parking lots up and down Price.   Then I heard of two other folks whose avalanches had this happen not on Price.  You're right about craigs list.  There's 3 or 4 sets for sale there currently.   $250 is the highest price which is odd given that they cost 2700 to replace.

Welcome! To the club and let me add my $ .02 worth. I am so darn sorry that happened to you and the miserable person that stoops this low certainly could not be an Av owner. At least not a good one. Hopefully your insurance will take care of this and yes I would get that guard put on. This seems to be a new wave among thieves I was warned by my agent that it is common. This is one thing I have never understood is someones willingness to steal anything.

That would be a GREAT idea.  Maybe the last six digits of the VIN, which nobody else would have. It would tie those panels to one truck.  "Stealth Mod".

I'm sorry to hear that! If there is one thing I really HATE it is thieves, people work hard for what they have! I've always been afraid of this happening to my truck since they cost so much! I think today is a good day to hook my alarm up to my tailgate!

My #2-3 panels have a ring about the size of a garbage can lid, #1 has a bad spot too. I posted before & after photos on here when I treated them with Something Better. It's almost impossible to detect the ring after I treat the panels, almost.

Imagine the look on the guys face if I found him selling my panels. I'd tell him I needed to go to the ATM, come back with the cops and my 17" laptop with 3008x2000 pixel photos showing the tell-tale ring on the panels proving they came off my truck. BUSTED!

I went and looked at my ava's back and I fail to see how they could get them off the 07 08's and then if they did mine I would know it if I found them for sale. My dealer showed me that they have some scan thing in all doors and other parts all over the new ones or at least they do here and if a door or top etc is stolen and reported they can scan them now. Not sure how this works but they did say they were not removable either so the new avs are fairly safe from thieves . I hope he is right.

First off I would like to say  Welcome! and I hope you will join us at our monthly meeting this month. I guess  I am trying to figure out the jimmy jam thing. does it just replace your plastic tailgate face? This is actually the first time I have ever heard about it happening. Cindy I cant believe Michael had it happen to him too. I really like the whole stealth mod idea. I guess its another reason that the snug top is a good idea. I think we should all call the # on craigs list and turn that guy over to the police. I sometimes wondered if the ones on ebay were stolen because they sell those for 500 bucks for the entire set. I hope we can catch this A$$who@e. and when we do I will leave a tread mark from a 37 over his face.

For those of you that still have your covers, ugh sorry, hehe you might try and do something like this, it will not stop them, but will most definately slow them down!  If a scoundrel wants something bad enough he's gonna get it, period.

Bed rail cut between the locking handles, originally to take the sag out of panel, then on to mod the mod, lol.  Drilled two holes about two inches into the handles(in towards the bed from the tip of the handle) if you know what I mean.  2" padlocks on both sides with the handle secured.

Hell yea I'll sell bedrails all day long for a HUNDRED bucks, lol the cost on mine was the cost of the two padlocks, usually you can find bedrails in your garage or attic, or at least the salvation army store for a couple of bucks.  Oh I already had the screws and spray paint, lol.

Thanks all for your comments and welcoming me to the club.    I went and purchased a jimmie-jammer and installed it on the tail-gate ($35).  For those who don't know, its essentially a steel plate that installs on the back-side of the tailgate bezel.  The bezel is the black plastic piece that the tail gate lock is housed in.   So this steel plate prevents someone from inserting a screw-driver in under the tail-gate handle to jimmie the latch.  I *think* it prevents someone gaining access if the punch the lock, as was done in my case.   But I don't know that for sure.   I am feeling a little safer now that its installed.   Wow it sure would be great to see the criminal who did this in prison.

That's true but they just busted 4  or 5 gangs that were burglarizing cars & homes and at times armed robbery if they entered an occupied dwelling locally. It wasn't just some broke guys, it was organized. They'd actually create a ruckus in the street or throw snowballs at homes to determine if there was anyone inside.

I don't think most thieves are looking for a legitimate job

I agree with you flint, organized crime has always existed; but, stealing siding to sell for scrap, it is kind of hard for me to be believe that is organized; it may be a druggie or druggies that may need the money to buy crack. Something similar was happening around the outskirts of phx where people were stealing copper from well pumps to sell it for scrap.  I don't think there is even anything legitimate about being a thief.

I didn't mean stealing aluminum siding was organized, they also strip copper wiring/pipes from vacant homes. Alot of that is the crackheads

The burglaries of many cars and homes recently was organized. Another recent practice is stealing valuable trees, just cutting down someone's walnut or other hardwoods and selling them to saw mills while they are vacationing. On the scrap metal front they are towing older cars, usually ones that haven't been moved lately so it looks legit to neighbors, and crushing them. That's organized when you got guys with tow trucks or chain saws and trucks stealing cars & trees.

Sorry to hear about your cover theft.

Glad you got the Jimmi Jammer installed.

I may have to invest in that for mine.  My AV spends its life on the end of the driveway.

Had my tonneau covers stolen Monday, 3/31, at Honeywell parking lot on 19th Ave.  Thanks to the person who posted the link to the Jimmy Jammer.  Ordered one, however, still awaiting approval from my insurance company for replacement of covers and lock mechanism.  Sad

JPL, did security have a film of them stealing your covers?  I would ask.

I'm going to have to make a mod to lock the covers on.   I never take them off, so its not a pain to leave them locked for a few years.

I wish I had seen this freaking post before. I just feel victum of prey to these guys as well. They got me last night and my covers have been stolen as well.
Yes they got me, I work hard for my money and try to have a few nice things and some body robs me.

So If I get new ones and secure the latches with the bed rails, do I just do the last tail gate or do I do this mod to all the tail gate latches?

You put the bed rail on the last cargo cover to go on, lets face it, if they want them bad enough, they are gonna get em but with the bed rail, its just gonna take em longer, much longer and maybe which is my hope, they'll just say forget it!  When you get ready to do it if you need any further help with this mod, don't hesitate to PM.

sorry to hear you lost the covers. I hope they catch this vermin soon. Seems as if he/she has a pretty good business going on down there. Think that will be my next addition because I go to AZ often.

Keng - was it you that sent me email on this topic?  Tried to reply but get errors.   Anyway, for my particular theft I purchased/installed a JimmyJammer.    I sleep better having it even though its likely not 100% burglar proof.    My insurance company covered the tonneau cover.  However the tools and archery gear I had in the back I had to replace on my own dime.  I would recommend getting this device at a minimum and also considering some of the things others have posted in this thread.     Extending the alarm to the tailgate is something I'd like to do.

I came across this website upon googling "stolen tunneau covers for avalanche" and boy am I glad that I did.  I had my Tunneau Covers stolen two nights ago.  and not only did they take the covers, but they also took both sideview mirrors (i'm guessing it's b/c they are the one's w/the turn signals on them and more expensive)!!!  Based upon the feedback I've seen in this forum (and thank you all by the way), I am definitely getting a Jimmy Jammer once I get the covers re-installed.  I just wish I could have walked in on these scumbgag thieves during the process!  there would def be a couple of less people on the earth, thats for sure.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to extend the alarm to the tailgate of the truck?
