Title: antenna (delete) mod
Post by: grnxnam on May 19, 2007, 21:18:35 PM
Took my antenna off a while ago, but was left with the hole where it was mounted.

I found a thread on FSC that took care of that.

before (its really Viper's truck since I had already completed the swap):

After:

here's the part number for the cover... Escalade cowl corner - GM part number 15287179

someone posted on FSC that they paid about $10 for the piece shipped from partszoneonline.com.  I sent SpikeAv a pm to see if he could get it and he was nice enough to hook me with it and pass it along to Avcop778 for delivery.  Took about 2 minutes to swap the cover.  It'll take a lil longer if you do the whole mod keeping the antenna.

here's a link for the complete mod keeping the antenna:

That's clean. Nice mod!

I took an easy way out with an aftermarket OnStar antenna I didn't like on top (and wouldn't work on the digital systems)..

It threaded right on.

grnxnam,
Did you move your antennae as shown in the link, or did you come up with somehting else?  Did your reception change for the worse or better after your mod?

I may have to do this.  I did the "car wash permanently deleted my antenna" mod.  The car wash was going to repair/replace it, but I actually kinda liked the way it looked without it :4:

since my antenna was already gone, I just put the cover over the antenna base.  I never listen to FM stations at all.  They guy on FSC who did this said there was a lil loss in reception, but not enough to worry about.

I am going to do this mod as well - thanks grnxnam  :A:

I've wanted to remove my antenna, but didn't want that hole.  I listen to XM all the time so I am not that concerned about minor reception loss, and the antenna always rubs on the garage door as I pull into the garage.

for those wanting to just remove the antenna because you never use it, all thats needed is to replace the cover.  it fits over the base without a problem.

I should do this mod, but with relocating the antenna as my cowl piece is still the shattered piece from the hailstorm last year.

That looks very cool and clean. With lowering mine even more and those purple pearl flames, teak wood etc. I think it is time to slick it down a bit and this will be a good start!! I will go out and lay the antenna down this week, if I don't loose much FM reception I will order that part!

THANKS for the tip!

You're in a flat area, should be little or no change if you simply removed the antenna. Relocating it will make most difference in cities or other obstructed areas plus give you more reception distance.

Post by: Z66 BUTCH on May 21, 2007, 08:06:57 AM
I just went out and relocated my antenna! I never even used the L bracket as suggested (do I need it for a ground, radio seems to play fine withoput it)..........I just laid it down, put one tie tab near the center of the antenna and then placed a custom cut piece of black dense cell foam under the antenna in a couple of places...it don't move! Now to get that new part ordered!

THANKS FOR THIS MOD! The antenna was always in the way when trying to wash the windshield, change wiper blades etc..........

I just went back out and made up a ground strap for the antenna. I noticed that my radio when I hit seek did not pick up near as many stations after I laid it down. With the ground strap it is back to normal. I did break one of the clips off of the panel when taking it off today so i just left it off......hope the new one gets here soon! Has anyone ordered parts from partszoneonline.com and how was their shipping? I don't seem to be able to track it yet............ ::)

For others considering ordering the part.

I ordered from our site partner VanDevere was $8 and change and they are combining with a previous order so no additional shipping.  They shipped with tracking via UPS the next day.

Another site partner is DeLillo.

Both sell at 10% over dealer cost plus shipping for CAFCNA, and that way we support our site partners.

I cheated :4:.  Ordered it from the dealership (via a buddy of mine).  No shipping  :1: just gotta make a 4 mile round trip to pick it up.  Of course, the way gas prices are . . . shipping may be cheaper.  Oh well, gives me an excuse to BS with him for an hour or so . . . it not like he actually works when he's there.

I ordered mine on Monday from the link provided in the first post. There is no tracking info available yet on their site so I just sent them a email. If I don't hear from them that it has shipped by Tuesday I will cancel the order and try Van Devere. I am afraid they will be short on stock soon! :P

If you listen to AM I would not even consider this mod, I cannot pick up even ONE station that is AM! I think they make a antenna booster, maybe we should look into this...........

From the manufacturer's website:
(I left all the typos)

Quote
Q. does this antenna require a 12-dc power supply?
A. YES. KIT REQUIRES IT TO BE HOOKED UP TO A GROUND AND A SWITCHED POWER

Q. When mountinting the Hidden antenna kit, does it need a clear view through the glass to get reception like a car starter antenna mounted up by the review mirror, or can it be mounted anywhere like behind the seat in a truck?
A. the antenna can be mounted anywhere in the car is long as it is not sheilded by metel

I did this tonight on my 07. I haven't ordered the new cover yet...need to track down the part number for the 07. The wire that runs back to the HU was long enough to pull the antenna down so I had to pry it out a little with a wood dowel (not much room there). Of course I dropped the dowel a few times (PIA - had to remove the wheel well in order to get it out :beating:)  I made a 90 deg bracket of of aluminum to make the antenna lay down. And on the 07's there's no place to zip tie the antenna down so I used so Gorilla tape for now - actually works pretty well...cool and cheap mod.

THE AV LOOKS A HECK OF A LOT BETTER!!!

Could you please post that part number when you track it down?

www.partszoneonline.com charged $8 for part and I did not see any shipping costs with USPS listed, so shipping may be free. It was on special, probably b/c they've been selling so many recently!

Ohh, I like the mod, it looks cool and makes it much easier to clean the windshield. Taking picture while on a cruise is better. I use the radio most of the time so I notice that the reciption is weaker some days where it was rock solid before. If you don't listen to FM much it is a no brainer.

When you find a good booster let us know. I like to listen to FM Radio.

gdoebs,

Could you please post that part number when you track it down?

I've been looking to do this mod myself, but didn't know if there was a compatible cover for the 07'

Thanks Bro!

Sure thing, I'll be heading to the dealer soon for and oil change, I'll ask then and post here.

I uses a stranded copper ground strap. I notice that I get interference from my laptop....when it is on and I have a weaker station tuned in it has a static sound, stronger stations are not a problem. I hope the Autoloc antenna is better if not I may just restore the original antenna. I am in a fringe area for the stations I like, for some people getting a better signal would not be a problem.

I just knocked this mod out last night........

I'm in the Chicago area....so far FM reception is decent........am is spotty...kinda in and out.

I did install a grounding strap along with the L bracket.....all in all well worth it since I listen to my MP3 player more than anything else, and now I no longer have to worry about the ant. snapping off while entering and leaving my garage!

Plus it looks much better!

I wanted to update you.....I bought THIS ANTENNA (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=004&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=140129443790&rd=1) a while back. It has the larger Motorola jack and will not fit our radios. I looked at radio Shack and a few other places and could not find the right adapter for it so I called Didit. He found on in about a hour!

That's not all, later he and First2hunt2004 show up and installed the antenna for me! There were no instructions at all in the package but it looks simple, a plug for the radio, a bare ground strap and a wire to ground it all to the radio...........WRONG! The extra wire is a 12 volt power supply, it is a amplified antenna!

I went down to Didit's place today and we figured it out and changed that wire and now it is playing GREAT!! Give me  a few more testing days but so far I will say it is better than the stock antenna and that is with it hid up under the headliner!

Didit did a great job and has the antenna and all wire hid and the power hooked to key-on power! Thanks Didit, you did it again!

After the modding of the mod we played a couple of games of euchre, it was fun, we hadn't played in about 10 years! We then went to lunch then headed back home listing to good old classic Rock & Roll all the way home!!! No pictures this time as it was a unplanned GTG.

AHHH  good ole Euchre!  Our friends from Illinois taught us that game.

I have noticed some loss in reception in different parts of town. I will have to eventually add a hidden antenna I guess :needhug:    It looks too good w/o the antenna to ever go back :A:

Here is what the antenna looks like. We did not get any pics of the install.........
I am still not convinced that it is as good as the factory antenna in the factory location but it is MUCH better than just laying the factory one down inside the fender! I can get most FM stations, just the one that I really like seems a little weak here. Didit talked about a Y adapter that will allow you to plug in BOTH antennas.......I may do that yet.............

I thought it was time for a update about this antenna. IT IS GREAT!!!

We first installed it up under the headliner and it was loosing signal in places where my factory antenna never did. I got to thinking about it and if it is up under the headliner then it in under metal just as the factory antenna is when you lay it down and then close the hood.

A couple of weeks ago while Didit was helping me with some mods I decided it needed moved. It came with double sided tape so we stuck it along the A pillar on the passenger side. It is barely noticeable and it is much better there! As a matter of fact I believe it is as good as the factory antenna, it will even pick up AM again...........

Sorry no pics this time.........but you can see the antenna in the above post, just close your eyes and you can picture it along that A pillar!!! :4:

I just ordered the part. gmparts direct wanted $7 for the part and almost $11 shipping.

www.partszoneonline.com charged $8 for part and I did not see any shipping costs with USPS listed, so shipping may be free. It was on special, probably b/c they've been selling so many recently!
this guys dont charge shipping it seems odd.. did they add it after you order it?

Ok. Has anyone done this on an 07 yet? I tried today but I can't seem to get the antenna base to lay down? I also ordered the part after comparing my stock part with it. They seem to be similar. If not I'm only out $10 if I can't return it, so I'm not really worried.

But has anyone done this on an 07????!?!? Avcop???

This mod can't be done on an 07 because there is no room to lay down the antenna. The piece is coming in this week, so I'll let you guys know if it fits. I guess the only way you can delete the antenna on an 07 is to take it off altogether.

Don't lay down the antenna unless you don't listen to FM radio, get the antenna that sticks to the inside of the windshield. There 2 of them one is un powered and the other is powered. The powered one has a amplified and will pull in many more FM stations

I would go look at the 2007 EXT. If it has a hidden antenna then you can buy the piece that covers the antenna hole just as we did on the older models. I don't think that you will be happy just laying the antenna down, especially if you really use the radio. The reception on mine was no where near as good as it was in the factory position, and yes I ran a ground strap. I ended up replacing it with a amplified antenna and mounted it with double sided tape along to A pillar on the inside of the windshield. It works at least as well as the factory antenna and I think maybe even better!

I don't use FM at all. I'll check with the 07 EXT for the part to cover the whole. Thanks guys, should've thought of that before.

There isn't space between the actual body & engine compartment where you lay down the antenna on the older models.

Here's what I mean....

I'm speaking of 07+ models. I said engine compartment because I wasn't sure what to call the area where you would lay down the antenna. As you can see in your pictures, there's a large gap where you can easily lay the antenna. On 07+ models, that gap is non-existant & there is absolutely no way to even get the base angeled in a way so that the antenna would be laying down flat because of the crammed space.

I changed mine. I cut the antenna off just above the thick part at the bottom. Then I unscrewed it to fit a 14 ga. wire under it and ran the wire up the A pillar and over the passenger door, tucking it in the channel in the rubber gasket. Works pretty well. A lot easier that trying to lay it down in an 07.

I found this on Ebay for one of those powered block antennas (piece of junk and over $40)

Quote
For the best AM/FM reception nothing works better than a 31 vertically mounted antenna mast. Recognizing that application is impossible on some vehicles our improved amplified antenna is the next best thing. We suggest installation on inside top of windshield for best performance (behind rear view mirror is a great spot) but you can experiment with limitless locations.

I have one of the dipole types Butch used on the previous page and was thinking of using in the rear like he did. In this case I want to insert it inside the cladding in the A-frame or near the 3rd brake light. I just need to check on how much coaxial cable I have lying around.

Well the dipole antenna has mixed results so far. If you extend the cable and run it out the rear it does work much better. However not well enough for my HD radio. So I played around with different placements for 2 hours. If set in the correct spot, it can work as well (if not better} mounted inside. The one place that worked best was on the frame of the rear window. Seems the rear defroster wires help pull in the signal. Mounted there I got all my FM stations, but only half were in HD. Then when I was running an extension wire for the braided ground, it brought in the HD stations that were borderline. Running that wire around the headliner boost the reception.

I also noticed  where you ran the coaxial cable made a difference. If the cable was keep high and excess length removed, the signal once again improved.  What I want to try next is running the power wire for the antenna amp separate from the coaxial cable. Will report again tomorrow.

OK, it's done and I like it!  :4:  I have all my favorite stations in HD!

I bought this antenna a few years back at a parts store, but you can still get them. I placed the powered Dipole antenna using Velcro on the lower center of the removable rear window.  I attached it that way so I could easily remove it when I want the window out. I left a small strip of Velcro on the midgate frame for temp storage when the glass was out. All wires were tucked into the trim and headliner. The ground has to run the opposite direction of the antenna coaxial run or reception suffers. You also want to run the 12V wire separate from the coaxial wire as much as possible (sometimes this is not possible). I also left some extra wire tucked in the corners on each side of the midgate frame in case the frame needed to be lowered.

I suggest using a good TV grade coaxial to extend the short stock run that comes with the antenna. I would wait until the runs has been made toward the head unit before making the final cut as too much length can degrade the signal. Also wrap the spliced copper braided wire with some bare 18G wire to ensure good shielding, then finish with heat shrink.  I ran the 18G ground lead to the driver's side rear door area and attached it to a stud under the floor trim. You may have to play with different run paths depending on interference from other wires and electronics.

Today was a hot and clear day with noe clouds to bounce the radio signal and I got good reception. I thought this would never be possible with a hidden antenna.  :A:

Looks good but what do you do when you want to remove the bar below the window and drop the midgate?

It's when the glass is removed and you turn the release handle the opposite way and the bar support frame goes down with the midagte.

I rarely open the bar, but I thought I better address it in case others do that.

Whoops I read that wrong, I left extra wire in the corners that pulls freely out of the bar trim and has enough slack to reach the ceiling. I will need to place one more strip of Velcro for that, but I ran out.   :E:

UPDATE:  It seems after another test drive, a couple of my stations were not a clear as I had hoped.
So I moved the dipole to the center of the glass. That helped quite a bit. The reception is good, but more wire is exposed. I may experiment with moving it to the top, but it works for now..

I too did the lame lay down...tried a couple different configs...ending up undoing the mod...

Knew ahead of time that powered antennas are not the answer...a crap signal that is "amped" is just a "loud crap signal"...

But I have done some extensive research and searching and found what may be the answer

If you into reading..."google" fractal geometry...read a few links (the wikpedia one is ok for basics)

Then "google" fractal antennas...they are direct decendants of the geometry theory...and have only been put into practical production since the late 90's...

These fractal antennas are showing up all over the place...they have been in our cell phones since "pull out" antennas disappeared...and are inside the "shark fin" antenna housings you see mostly on Euro cars like beemers and so forth...

But I managed to locate my first aftermarket fractal after looking into buying a BMW shark fin...the wiring needed to convert it was a nightmare...

But the one I found is plug and play...

Below are posted two pics to get an idea of how fractals differ from conventional...and the third one is a pic of the actual fractal antenna I ordered...

The fractal designs are space savers for sure...

BTW all these photos expand...how depends on your browser properties...but there is more detail available in the larger images...

Back to the data...there is only 1 website that I found that carries this antenna...here is the link...

CLICK HERE FOR LINK  (http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/9950/377%20710/0/am%20fm%20antenna/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710&Ne=0&Ntt=am%20fm%20antenna&Ntk=Primary%20Search&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&Nao=0&Ns=0&keyword=am%20fm%20antenna&isLTokenURL=true&storeNum=5003&subdeptNum=3&classNum=722)

Before you order you make sure your Head Unit is compatible with the type of antenna connector shown in the picture below...it is known as a Motorola tip...most aftermarket Head Units use this very common tip...but the GM factory antenna tip is different so if you are going to install this antenna in a stock radio (or have a Head Unit that is not Motorola compatible) you will need an adapter to change from Motorola to GM, or to what your Head Unit uses.

edited to correct when you will need an adapter

The Fractal elements are embedded in 3M clear tape...the antenna can be mounted either horizontally or vertically...

These photos show I mounted horizontally along the top of the windshield keeping the Fractal element about an inch away from body surfaces (as recommended)

You can see the antenna is quite long as it extends from the upper right corner to the center of the windshield

Performance:

I could tell no difference in reception quality of FM AND AM stations...

If anything the reception quality is slightly improved over the stock mast

There are a couple of AM and FM stations that are not anywhere near us and the signal was improved over stock

Now I feel totally comfortable buying the new "corner" trim for the cowl...
The OEM antenna mast is officially retired

If you don't mind a thin silver strip on the top of your windshield this is the definate answer to a Plug And Play replacement antenna

It rocks

You could try this:

That adapter appears to be the wrong direction.  It looks like it uses the GM antenna and a Motorola style head unit.  Is there one for the opposite application?

A guy I know had to replace his antenna lead because the antenna mounting base snapped off in a car wash...

The new lead had a motorola plug but the antenna base was just like the OEM one for his Avalanche...

He went to Best Buy and they had a Motorola to GM mini plug adapter out in their Install Shop (why it wasn't in the store on display I still don't understand) and he had no problem buying the adapter from them and converting the new Motorola lead to his stock GM radio

The di-pole is working pretty good, but I like the idea of a permanent mount for the antenna.

Ordered my fractal from West Marine today, Thanks for the link Cliff.

The di-pole is working pretty good, but I like the idea of a permanent mount for the antenna.

As the pictures in my previous post show, I mounted along the top horizontal windshield area, staying at least an inch away from the body (roof line)...but what doesn't show in the pictures is that

I ran the lead down the inside of the "A" pillar molding...pulled the dash top and ran the lead parallel to the factory lead route...

I think this is an important step to insure against interference from 12V power leads inside the dash area...if you shortcut the route by going just behind the glove box and in front of the heater box, you run the risk of proximity interference from the blower motor, heater/AC control wiring and head unit power wiring.  I am pretty sure this is why the factory uses an "elevated" antenna lead route above and away from these items

As you already know Tom...and others should be aware as well...

Shortcutting the route of the lead by not pulling the dash top may result in interference and less than optimum reception...coax shielding is limited in it's abilities to isolate itself from spurious signal interference (including interference from leads carrying power)

This applies to the antenna also as far as it's proximity to metal body surfaces, which is one of the reasons the "antenna lay down" results in virtually no AM reception and drastically reduced FM reception (unless you are relatively near the transmitter location)

Having it installed now for a couple weeks and taking a couple of 200 mile roundtrips my opinion is this fractal antenna is still...at least as good as the stock mast...

Thanks Fractal technology

Eh...it's not that bad

1  Remove the dash surround bezel (the one that surrounds the I/P cluster/radio/heater controls)
2  Remove the 2 AC/Heater vents from passenger side (the ones on each side of the pass airbag)
3  Remove grab handle (the one above pass airbag)
4  Remove all screws that secure the dash top to the dash front structure (I forgot how many...6 to 8?)
5  The lip of the dash which is located at the windshield base is just secured with "slide in tabs" meaning when you lift and pull the top
from where you sit in the seat...they will slide out of "locator grooves" ( they do not snap/no push pins just a groove the tabs slide into)

It's not hard...actually pretty easy.  The scary parts when you do it the first time (if there are any) are....

1  Don't scratch your vents when you pull them.  Use a pair of soft "pry" tools (plastic disposable knife or similar...use the handle not the serrated cutting edge)...on the outside frame of the vent housing to "ease" it out of the dash.  Not only do these two vents have to come out to remove the top but to gain access to the grab handle releases
2  finding the release points for the grab handle.  Just a little out of sight the first time (see the Sperry Tech Center for a diagram=not very good for detail but you'll find the release points once inside your Av in less than a minute)
3  Don't worry about reinstalling the top...very straightforward...just slide the front tabs into their locator grooves...lower the side closest to you and start buttoning her up

When the dash top is off you'll get a chance to see your OnStar box...the location where the factory antenna lead enters the cab from the firewall...some other neat stuff usually out of view...and have the confidence to do it again if needed

Wow you guys are serious about this......I removed my antenna and just ran a regular old piece of 18 awg wire under the splash pan for the windshield zip tired to the cars wire harness, and used a couple washers and an acorn nut on the antenna base to connect the wire....no AM, but I haven't listen to AM since the late 70's..... :beating:....no loss in FM, total time of mod about 15 minutes, most of which was looking for an acorn nut to fit the antenna post...lol

I was originally intending to just do this temp until I could find a CB antenna to fit the base and then use a splitter for the radio, but hey this worked so good, I just left it that way.  reception is good, the little chrome acorn nut fills the hole in the plastic thing around the antenna base, and there is no ugly antenna sticking up.  Now I got to figure out how to do the CB antenna hidden as well, still thinking on that one.

If you do the "lay down" mod you will loose it completely...
If you replace the antenna with a suitable one...you won't loose anything

Most "powered" antennae are dipole types for FM only

The fractal I am suggesting is AM/FM
Title: Re: antenna (delete) mod
Post by: GoNavy429 on June 15, 2009, 11:45:09 AM
Well if you do the mod the way I did...you get NO AM stations....I listen to CNN alot on XM and other XM station, rarely do I listen to FM and never AM.  So just running a wire under the hood connected to the antenna base was more than adequate.  If you want AM, probably have to do the hidden antenna route, but I heard AM is not really too good doing that either.

Addon:  I have an 08 so doing the laydown mod doesn't work, no room for the antenna, but you can do it the way I did with the 18 awg wire under the hood, if you don't mind lossing AM.  If you have a 02-06 there is a procedure for doing an antenna laydown, which might work for you...

I have to look, but I remember reading somewhere on here, where they ran wire down the right side of the AV along/under the rubber gasket back across and under the brake light plastic, then down the sail panel...or something along those lines and they didn't lose anything, except the ugly antenna sticking up on the hood....seems someone else run the wire along the top of the windshield under the rubber, can't remember what his reception was like....

Found it, from last year

I thought of that originally, but decided against it as it would be too directional. If the vehicle was positioned so the roof was blocking the wire from the FM L.O.S., the reception would suffer greatly. When the wire is in the glass, it has enough distance from the metal roof (and also the vertical run) so this is not a problem.

I installed the fractal antenna from West Marine yesterday. I am unhappy to report it has so far not worked as well in this area as the Di-pole.  :E: ICHNGE was right about the placement of the coaxial lead effecting reception. I temporally taped the antenna to the same area that ICHNGE has it installed. Then with the entire dash top removed (which I can now do in 10 mins flat) I began trying various routes for running the lead, checking reception strength. Amazingly, I could go from an HD channel almost locking in, to totally loosing the station just by moving the coaxial lead. Running it along side the existing factory was horrible for me. After about 90 mins. of playing, I found the best route and locked it in, then replace the dash. At this point in time I still did not have a single HD channel staying locked in.  :dunno:

I went ahead and placed it on the windshield where ICHNGE has his mounted. Once in place the reception dramatically improved. Actually, I left the radio on as I was applying the tape and could see it improving with each inch applied. Then something funny happened, when the last inch was applied and my hand removed, the locked in HD channel began to fade. So I peeled back about 1/2 an inch, and it came back.  :o

So I then trimmed that 1/2" with a pair of scissors and Bingo, it locked in HD again.  :woot:

My driveway is not the best place to test it as my house is in a low valley, so the final test will be this morning when I drive around town. Keep your fingers crossed!

Tom

Metra Electronics / 14 1/2 in. width black glass mount amplified antenna with 93 in. cable, separate AM/FM amplifiers, ground wire and red LED

Bought it at autozone for 20 bucks it's pretty common so most auto stores carry it.
One thing I have to tell ya, the little red light can be annoying and it's pretty strong without power to it

There is a coaxial cable attached to the factory antenna mount you could tie into for the RF signal. If its a powered antenna, you will have to run the power wire wire from the radio power on signal. My reception under the hood was terrible.

Just bought the Metra powered antenna after my stock unit was bent taking my Ave through the carwash for the first time in its life. Figured it was a good excuse to mod.

Only question is does anyone know what color wire I should tap into the radio for power? It needs to have power even after the key is taken out of the ignition. I have an aftermarket Alpine HU that I installed several years ago but I bought a direct fit wire harness.

Alright little hickup on the install if someone could help.

The back of my Alpine headunit has a powered antenna cable included in harness. I thought, great this is exact what I need. The problem is when I connect the antenna power cable from the head unit to the powered antenna lead that a ran over the headliner and down the dash it kills my 4 channel speaker amplifier but the sub-woofer remains on. Two seconds after disconnecting the power to the antenna, which I could not see a red light on, the 4 chan amp kicks back on and I hear audio.

I could not find a suitable ground in the oveerhead console area so I removed the OnStar microphone that was clipped on besides the console and tapped into the black negative lead and I checked it with a voltmeter that it is a good ground. Could I have tripped something in the powered Metra antenna since it does not have a fuse?
Title: Re: antenna (delete) mod
Post by: Z66Modder on September 17, 2012, 06:33:30 AM
Too much current draw on the powered ant lead. You will need to use small 12 volt relays to isolate the loads. Use the 12 v always on signal at each amp to one side the normally open contacts of each relay. Then run the other contact lead to the control lead for each amp. Then hook the relay coils to the powered ant lead; With the other side of the coils grounded.

This way you draw very little current with the amps and the antenna should now get what it needs.

My problem is as soon as I connect the 12v lead to the power antenna lead on my HU the amps cut out and then I have no audio. I have checked with a voltmeter and the power antenna lead is exactly what I  can use to power it and was verified with a crutchfield tech agent.

I even went strait to the battery and it does not power up. Waiting for the return now. Crutchfield has amazing customer service FYI.

Be careful when you wire up the new one. I would suggest using a relay or ignition power.
The power antenna feed is only 500 miiliamp output. Not enough to power the antenna.

Correction, got it today.  No time to install right away.

Tried it without mounting it, just left it flat on the roof. It picked up as well as the factory mast, but I was not moving. Also it has about 15 feet of cable, that alone may have induced the signal. Will have to go for it Saturday.

Finally finished this mod. Found my problem and accidentally screwed into the power cable with the visor screws that go into the headliner. Fixed the wires and zip tied everything clean out of the way this time.

Used a ground from the OnStar speaker in the headliner and got power from the blue power antenna lead on the back of my Alpine HU. Turns on only with radio. Works great. Not sure about reception yet but seemed the same in the driveway. This antenna does not pull many amps and is fine to use the HU lead.

Antenna is not even noticeable from the drivers seat or outside. Passenger can barely even see it. Here is a pic of the setup. Sorry about the 89 degree weather in SoCal.

I had that one on my rear window. It worked well there but was slightly directional in reception when driving as compared to the roof mount I use now. I actually only got rid of it because it was a pain to remove the window with it mounted there.

Yeah this one is pretty discrete. I actually removed the bracket that held the onstar GPS so that I could tuck it away a little more. I was riveted into the roof structure.

I'll report back if I have issues otherwise I might consider the shark fin to replace my onstar antenna on the roof. Not sure how an offset shark fin would look though.

Well after a couple months of use, I am going back to the stock antenna. The Metra antenna works alright but really suffers in difficult areas of canyons and hills. Even semi's parked next to me at a stoplight could block some signals.

Also anyone is the passenger seat asks me,"what is that?"

No worse than this I imagine.

Now that you have had your fin in for awhile Z66Modder how is the reception?

I find myself actually using FM quite a bit and AM to check traffic occasionally. So for me an aftermarket antenna needs to be greater or equal to the stock antenna reception. For now I'm going back to the stock antenna since there does not seem to be a solution that is 100% perfect. But man do I like the look without the damn stock antenna.

Have not tried AM yet. FM is been about the same as the factory, which around Tacoma is not always good with the hills and such. The weather has a big impact too. I did replace the coax that came with it with a good shielded one. I am satisfied with what results I have and will not be going back to factory mast.

I like the look but I want to keep the FM reception as good as I can
