Title: Upcoming GTG's
Post by: GoldBowTie on 12/27/07 07:36 PM
I started this topic to list anticipated upcoming GTG's and to list GTG ideas.

As get-together topics are started, I'll add them here and post a link to their thread.

I won't limit the list to only Ohio GTG's.
The list will consist of all GTG's that any Ohio member may be interested in attending.

With this list you can quickly see what is coming up, then check out the ones that work for you.

I would go for a Minor League team, they seem to be more receptive to promo ideas like that.  And get a friend in a local Chevy dealership, maybe something can be tied in with them at the ballpark.

Anybody in the Dayton, OH, area interested in trying to set something up in the next few weeks??  If so, let's start hearing some ideas!!  We attempted to set something up on a weekday evening before Xmas at a local Buffalo Wild Wings, but unfortunately that didn't materialize.  If we don't get some ideas over the next few days, I'm going to suggest a date/time and see who can make it, okay?

A friendly reminder to everyone.
You do not have to be a cruise coordinator to plan a GTG.

If you have an idea that you think might work, go ahead and start a thread on the idea and let the discussion and planning commence.

I'll put a link to the topic in the first post here.

As a cruise coordinator it is my duty to help as much as I can with any planning or promoting.

I will maintain a list of ideas in the first post here.

I can add one .... this is also in the Michigan GTG thread for '08 .... but

Sunday Sept 7 2008 is a hugh car show in Toledo, Ohio ... they will have classic cars, newer cars and GM will have the new '09's there .....

we are able to show our trucks if we want .... I believe we don't have to pay to show our vehicle either ..... it starts early sunday morning and opens to the public noon ....

there is door prizes ... food .... a swap meet ... and a GM display ....

let me know if you would like to attend .... in early summer I will see about getting us an area to display our trucks ....

I apologize to boilers94.

No one replied and I forgot about it.

What I meant was this Ohio GTG section has been a bit quiet.
But just like with the Ohio Av site, the activity comes and goes in waves.

We do have a GTG almost every month, but the attendance has been small.
Please don't get me wrong - I enjoy all GTG's large or small.
And once-a-month is probably just about right so as to avoid GTG burn-out.

I just feel like I should get busy tagging and see if we can get some additional members.

I have it in the first post as Oct 11.
Typically we do it the second Saturday in October.

The "what" and "where" is not yet determined.   :dunno:

We could return to Avalanche Pizza in Athens.
We are invited to return to the Covered Bridge Festival in Ashtabula County.
We could do something different than we've done before.

That was a very nice area, and it's been a while since we've all been there.

There's a (slight) chance I could make this one if it were in the covered bridge festival area. Less likely if it's any further, virtually impossible for me if in Athens.

Coming up in September in the Wilmington, OH, area (Southwest Ohio) is the Clinton County Corn Festival.  The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Sept. 4, 5, and 6).  The event is held at the Clinton County Fairgrounds and additional information about the event can be found at www.clintoncountyohio.com.

Another upcoming event near the end of November in Southwest Ohio is the Hometown Hollidazzle Parade in downtown Wilmington that takes place on Saturday, November 29th.  In addition to this event, there is another neat event in Lebanon, OH in late November or early December where they have a large parade in downtown Lebanon that is comprised mostly of horse drawn carriages decorated for the holidays!!

It looks like October 11th is out for two more West Virginians. :needhug: We have a wedding we are supposed to attend.... And the Bubba's will be departing on their cruise that day.

I hate missing our Anniversary GTG, but if it's the bridge festival we prob wouldn't go anyway it being so far from us. The covered bridge festival was an awesome GTG and I think it would be a great one to repeat though.  At least if you have it up there maybe SS will be able to attend... and at least 2 of the original crew will be there. :needhug:

Speaking of October...Me and Melissa went on a haunted house tour last year at moundsville.  Its was ok but the real fun would be getting a group to go on the overnite ghost hunt.

Our list of upcoming GTG's is now a very short list.  :-[
Please let me know if I have missed some that need to be added to the list.

Also post here any additional ideas or things that are already on the suggestion list that you would like to see or do.
Once the "holiday rush" is done maybe we can start talking about WV WWW 7 or the suggested camping weekend in the spring.

A return trip to Mansfield and/or Bucyrus has been mentioned to me.
There are still many things to see in Mansfield.

We can do some indoor things until the weather improves.

I was wondering if there was a WV WWW 7 in the works.  ???

East Fork Campground (http://www.eastforkcampgrounddurbin.com/index.html) is a place that we are planning on going to in the spring. I am going to go on a scouting trip on Christmas weekend (weather permitting) to see what the camp ground really looks like and also what hotels are available in the area for any one that does not want to camp. A few of our horseback riding buddies have highly recommended this place. There is plenty to do in the area.

We (the wife and I + a couple of friends) will definitely be heading over to East Fork Campground for a spring time camping/horseback riding adventure in the spring. I will let everyone know what I find out during the recon run next weekend. I am thinking some time in May. As you know from our early April trip to Blackwater Falls last year it still pretty cold up there even in April. We have stayed at some various places up in West Virginia the 1st couple of weeks of May have have had temps down in the 30's @ night. Since we will be tent camping with our horses, we want it to be warm enough that we don't freeze  :4:. I think that the Cass scenic railroad opens the 3rd weekend of May so that might be a good option since I haven't ridden that for about 30 yrs. I know some of the participants of the WV WWW gtg last year expressed some interest in riding the Cass scenic railroad also.

Great Wolf is a few miles from my house and right next door to Kings Island!  It's a tad pricey however.

Kings Island is nice but not as good as Cedar Point.  I grew up near Cedar Point and it's much better.

I've not been around for a long time but am now back.  I'd be up for anything.

How about a return trip to Dresden, OH, near the   "Loggenburger".  They have the neatest little downtown just to browse through.

Also how about a trip to Shanksville PA to see the Flight 93 Memorial.

Also, a trip to Mansfield.  There is a ton of stuff to do in Mansfield.  The carousel and the Reformatory among other things to see and do.

An afternoon in the Munroe Falls Metro Park.  We got some great Fall pictures taken there.  Some even graced the cover of one of the scrapbooks.

$5.00 on a Sunday afternoon and you can take your dog to the gardens at Stan Hywet  Akron OH, through October.

Just a few of my ideas.

avyfanohio, I saw your post over at ohioavalanches.com

I might be able to come May 15.

I'm thinking of a camping GTG at Geneva State Park near Lake Erie on May 21-23.

Yes! I really, really really want to go to this GTG. Really!

But I already have something planned that weekend. The week before would be better for me, but it sounds like you already have something going that weekend.  :E:

That other event is not cast in stone for me, so if that's what works for everyone else, I'll see what I can do. :P

Now, we just need someone to start a thread for this. Who will it be? I can help with information and suggestions (been there a few times) but I'm so swamped right now I don't think I can take the lead.

For those camping, they have very large and beautiful sites. Electric only (there are only three sites with full hookups) but still well worth the trip. The attached picture was our site coming back from 2008's Avalanche Pizza GTG in Athens OH last October/November. Of course, the campground won't be quite as empty in May, but it's still very nice and roomy. (Note that I'm standing with the camera on the pad for one site, and there is only one other site between me and my site in the distance.  Those are big sites!)

I want to put together something for a Saturday in January or February to do Warther's Museum (http://www.warthers.com/index.htm) (open 10-4) in Dover and the Dennison Depot Rail Museum (http://www.dennisondepot.org/) (open 11-4).

We could tag on optional breakfast/brunch before and dinner after the museums
or
lunch between the museums

If there is interest, I'll work on restaurant ideas and logistics.  It's about a 15 mile cruise between the two museums.   Both are an easy drive south of Canton and perhaps close enough to entice some from WV to come up.

I have hesitated planning a GTG for TruckFest for one reason - if it rains, my Av is not going.
I am really frustrated with continually getting rained on at GTG's.
But I do plan to go to TruckFest at least as a spectator.

I'll have to check on campgrounds.
The first one that comes to mind is West Branch State Park.

Christmas on Main Street, Volant PA Nov 13 2010

We did this GTG in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Is there any interest for 2010?

A few links...

http://www.applecastle.com/  MAP HERE (http://agmap.psu.edu/Businesses/1628)

Old Saint Nick officially opens the Christmas season.  After hosting his annual breakfast for children, he enters Volant in grand style on a horse-drawn carriage.  Join in the festivities!  Strolling carolers, musicians, and more.  Enjoy Christmas as it was meant to be, on an old-fashioned Main Street.

Suggestion for a great place to eat and visit some shops.  Walnut Creek near Berlin, Ohio  is situated south west of Canton has great food restaurant, bake shop, a couple gift shops.  Its a short drive so it might fit for a afternoon outing.

A second suggestion is the Breitenbach Winery. (Very Very good wine here)  It is close to Sugarcreek, Ohio. (Also close to Berlin)  It has wine sampling, a small gift shop, and a small place to eat.    Both of these are fine places to visit.

MzBBB and I stayed in Sugar Creek last summer.  Very nice place, lots to see and the winery was fun.

We would be up for another trip there...and I know the kids would love to see it.

A must stop is Guggisberg (http://www.babyswiss.com/our_story.htm)

Got to make a stop at Walnut Creek Cheese..Mud Valley ice cream ( inside WCC)  is awsome.

Mohican State Park just south of Loudonville has some nice scenery and photo ops. Place (Iron Pony) about 5 miles north on Rt 3 heading towards Wooster would be a nice stopping point for some refreshments.

It is a mostly indoor thing to do, so we could do it while the weather is still cold.

I may have to be in Cleveland the weekend of the 13th.

We are penciled in for Volant and Lights...

For the holiday season, Lake Farmpark becomes a winter wonderland with horsedrawn wagon rides through the festive landscape, a Santa's workshop for kids, a grove of decorated trees in the visitors' center, and frequent visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus. 2012 dates are November 30-December 2 and December 4-23. Admission is $5 - $7 and tickets go on sale November 1 to Lake County residents and November 15 to out-of-county residents. Call 880 366-FARM for more information.

Please let me know what you guys think.

Hartwood Acres Celebration of Lights has been cancelled for 2012.

I just called Gators Grille to see about reservations and was told that the lights are cancelled.

Lights cancelled? (http://pittsburgh.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pittsburgh&cdn=citiestowns&tm=31&gps=196_20_1366_627&f=00&su=p1042.5.175.ip_p284.13.342.ip_p554.23.342.ip_&tt=11&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.alleghenycounty.us/news/2012/20120910.aspx)

Maybe will return next year? (http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/09/11/promoter-wants-to-save-celebration-of-lights-at-hartwood-acres/)

A GTG idea was suggested to me.
How about a pot-luck picnic GTG at a local park in Northeast Ohio.
Memorial Day weekend was suggested.
Saturday? or Sunday? ???
I assume some folks may already have plans on Monday. :dunno:
Location TBD - will try to find a park with some sort of pavillion or shelter.
Just a simple GTG to spend the afternoon together and catch up.

For my 2 cents there are lots of State Parks to travel to.
Geneva On the Lake
Nelson Ledges
Cuyahoga  Valley National Park
West Branch
Malibar Farm
Hocking Hills is a park not a state park

Hocking Hills has lots of activities on May 25 and 26.

I have found three available park options in Summit County:
http://www.summitmetroparks.org/Reservations/Shelters.aspx

Cascade Valley Park
1061 Cuyahoga St, Akron 44313
$45
Hilltop Shelter available Saturday and Sunday

Munroe Falls Metro Park
521 S. River, Munroe Falls 44262
$45
Main Beach Shelter available Saturday and Sunday
Shady Beach Shelter available Saturday and Sunday
Maple Beach Shelter available Saturday

Silver Creek Metro Park
5000 Hametown Rd, Norton 44203
$40
Pheasant Run Shelter available Saturday and Sunday

I may go investigate these to see which works best for us.
Check on parking, rest room locations, conditions, etc.
Would be nice to stay close with the trucks for discussions of mods and features.

I have found three available park options in Summit County:
http://www.summitmetroparks.org/Reservations/Shelters.aspx

Cascade Valley Park
1061 Cuyahoga St, Akron 44313
$45
Hilltop Shelter available Saturday and Sunday

Munroe Falls Metro Park
521 S. River, Munroe Falls 44262
$45
Main Beach Shelter available Saturday and Sunday
Shady Beach Shelter available Saturday and Sunday
Maple Beach Shelter available Saturday

Silver Creek Metro Park
5000 Hametown Rd, Norton 44203
$40
Pheasant Run Shelter available Saturday and Sunday

I may go investigate these to see which works best for us.
Check on parking, rest room locations, conditions, etc.
Would be nice to stay close with the trucks for discussions of mods and features.

I am going scouting today, after work.

I'll probably skip Silver Creek Pheasant Run Shelter as it has only one grill, no water and no electric.
Let's call Silver Creek "Plan B" in case the other locations don't work out.

Also, Toots tells me that Munroe Falls Park has an admission fee - I'll try to get confirmation on that.

Scouting report:

Cascade Valley Park, although a nice quiet place, will not work for us.
The shelter is up hill and visibly away from parking.

Munroe Falls will work.
Main shelter is over an embankment from parking - not good.
Shady shelter is OK, about 100 feet from parking.
Maple Shelter is better, but available to reserve only on Saturday the 25th.

Reservations are not required - shelter is available first come, first served.
But if reserved, it is guaranteed yours.

I'll call Thursday to get more info on payment requirements and any other admission fees.

I'm guessing Sunday would be better than Saturday as I expect some of you may have to work Saturday?

I can check on some parks here in Tallmadge too.

Opinions?

Another update:

There will be an admission fee to get into Munroe Falls Park.
Ages 13 and up, $4
2-12, $3
Under 2, free

Memorial Day weekend is opening weekend and if the weather is nice we can expect a large crowd.

I have reserved, but not yet paid for, Shady Beach Shelter for Sunday May 26th.
I have one week to make the $45 payment, or the shelter goes back up for grabs.

The admission fee is because of the swimming lake.
I don't think any of us are planning to swim, but that's the way it is.
I don't like it, but I'll pay it.

Please let me know by Tuesday if the admission fee is unacceptable.
If the fee is not acceptable, we'll have to find an alternative.

Good point.
I have paid way more than $4 in gas just to go to dinner.
What bothers me is we are paying to reserve the shelter and then we have to pay to get in to use it.
But that's just me being my usual cheap frugal self.  :-[
Heck, margaritas are usually more than $4.  :abuelito:

No problem on the admission cost.  We will help cover the shelter even in the unlikely event that something comes up and we are not able to attend.

This is a great option for lights.  About 2 hours from GBT's town.  An hour past where Hartwood Acres was on the Turnpike.

Overlys County Christmas (http://www.overlys.com/)

What is cool is that it is more like a town with shops, carriage rides and a huge bonfire.

Just a thought

Maybe a day trip to Dickens Victorian Village (http://www.dickensvictorianvillage.com/)
Or go to Overly's Country Christmas (http://www.overlys.com/)
Just looking for opinions on location and date.
I'm thinking December 14.

Some ideas that Toots found:

Christmas at Glendower,

Deck the Hall: Heaven & Nature Sing

I might do the Stan Hywet one myself if we don't do it as a GTG.

Yeah, Sauder and Glendower are a bit of a drive.

Stan Hywet is very close for me.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
714 North Portage Path
Akron OH 44303

Just 20 minutes south of the Ohio Turnpike (exit 173/11 or 180/12), Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is accessible by I-77, SR 8, I-71 and I-271.
Stan Hywet is 35 minutes south of Cleveland and 25 minutes north of Canton.

I've got to make one of these as I grew up in Hamilton.  I can remember when Jungle Jims was just a roadside fruit and veggie stand back in the 70s.  My father's commute took him by it and he'd stop at least a couple of times a week on the way home from work.

May want to consider doing this in the summer when Hamilton has their antique car parade.

7th Annual Tour - Christmas Cookie Tour of Inns
http://ChristmasCookieTour.com (http://ChristmasCookieTour.com)

This year there are two dates Saturday December 13 and Sunday December 14.
This is unfortunately the same weekend as Michigan's Holiday Dinner GTG.
There also isn't much information out there yet, but from the post card that we received, it appears that you drive to 12 different Amish inns to sample cookies from the 12 days of Christmas.

Tickets go on sale November 1, so we have some time to gauge interest.

Now that we are back from Quebec we are planning to move forward with this.  Regardless of whether it turns into a GTG, we will be going.  Saturday doesn't work for us so we will go on Sunday December 14.  In the next few days I will start an official thread for the GTG, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up on the date.

  --OldVMer
I'll be watching for the thread.
We are a "maybe" for now.

We're in Cincinnati.  my wife has mentioned before wanting to go to the Columbus Zoo sometime.  Everything from late October to mid-March depends on my kids' hockey schedules which pretty much rule our lives during those months.

The Columbus Zoo has been mentioned before, so there might be some interest. :dunno:
December is already pretty busy with GTG's, so might be better after first of the year.

Anyone interested in having a GTG at the Rock Hall for a MNG and photos? I'm thinking next weekend before the weather changes. That would be on 12/20.

Sounds fun, but the broken record excuse this time of year... We have hockey games that day.

:welcome: Truntula

A one week notice most times is not enough time to get a group together.
Especially around the holidays.
I can't do the 20th.

Thank you for the idea.
With the idea you can gauge interest and if there seems to be some folks wanting to go, then work on finding a date that works for most.

Wow - that brings back memories.  I recall about 40 years ago as a Boy Scout canoeing down the Little Miami River, stopping there, and listening to the guy building it.  I recall him telling about another visitor who asked how much money he had in the place, and after hearing it said he could never afford it.  The visitor was smoking a cigarette.  The owner asked how many cigarettes he smoked in a week, then did the math.  The visitor was spending as much a month on cigarettes as the owner was on building the place.  As I recall most of the construction was fairly simple - he was making concrete bricks for the place using half-gallon milk cartons as molds.

Would love to see the place again!

Yeah, I remember many years ago seeing a story on the news about how he built it.  We went there maybe 8 - 10 years or so ago.  It's a neat place.

I'd like to go to see a castle.  Loveland Castle looks pretty interesting.

Also I have a few coupons that you pay for one pass and the second one is free to tour Stan Hywet and gardens.  Trying to coordinate it with a Nooks and Cranny tour.  Also have the same deal with Akron Zoo.  Both are in Akron.  Anyone interested?

Ash and I were talking about coming back up to Stan Hywet and doing a nooks and cranny's tour in the late spring/early summer. Were always up for a weekend trip :)

We need to get the NE Ohio group together for a dinner meet in April.
I am good for pretty much any day, but I suggest April 9th or 23rd.
Any takers?  Preferred dates or location?
Title: Re: Upcoming GTG's

Either date works for us.  Spent a little time thinking about where to go and didn't come up with a "star" recommendation.  Pretty much anyplace is okay with us.  The key is someplace we can hang out at a table for a while over some decent food.  Since those are both Thursday nights, and we aren't working, I suggest we make it someplace in the Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge area.  That will be easier for those of you who have to get to work up to dinner time.

Either one should be good with us. Twiggy works from home now so we'd need a little time to fight traffic to get up there. I should be off both of those days so it won't effect me at all.

My choice of restaurant on Thursdays would be La Mexicana in Tallmadge.
https://www.facebook.com/LaMexicanaCantinaAndGrill?ref=br_rs

It is right across street from Delanie's and ATT where we parked.
Margaritas and desserts are 1/2 price on Thursday.

I'm open to other ideas if La Mexicana is not preferred.

Hopefully Josie's hockey doesn't interfere with Avalanche Pizza again this year.  We really enjoyed when we went a couple years ago.  We found a campground out that way we want to try if things work out.

I know what you mean about getting on and not posting.  I have some pics from our vacation I've been meaning to post up and just haven't gotten around to it.

Joe,

Amber and I tent camped at the state park a bit north of Athens a few years ago.  Not a lot of campsites but for us it was fine.  Our neighbors in the campground were there either to hunt or one was there to watch his son play football against OU.  Enjoyed cold Avalanche pizza for breakfast!

The one we scoped out is a little further away in Hocking Hills - Burr Oak Campground.  It looked pretty nice, had one loop that was a bit more secluded from the rest, hiking paths and a lake.  We tent camp as well.  Cold pizza = the breakfast of champions.   :4:

Fine by me :) Gives me time to actually do some mods. Light Bar for behind the grille is coming in on Monday. Also trying to track down why the rear speakers do not function at all, I have noticed they are not the stock speakers (unless alpines came as an option)

Alpine speakers weren't stock, I had issues with my 02 speakers as well. Mine were both just blown though. I replaced them with pioneer speakers shortly after we got the truck.

I've shown up in many different vehicles and on a few different bikes. It's been said many times before, it started out with a truck and is now about friends.
