so on my instrument cluster where there should be the P R N D 1 2 there is just a blank space. last night, for no apparent reason it came on. It was dim but it was there for sure. now of course today its back to being blank/off. I rarely drive at night and wonder if the auto headlights being on triggered something. not sure though because i turned on the headlightss today just to see but it did not make the display come on. short of replacing the entire cluster, is there a setting i am missing or maybe a funky bulb that can be replaced?

I am waiting till dark and going out to see if it comes on again.... about an hour from now lol

This is a symptom of the very common instrument cluster failure.

Back in the day, when these trucks were new, there was even a factory recall to address such issues.

That recall is no longer in effect.

However, there are several online repair vendors set up to rebuild and even upgrade your defective cluster.

One such repair vendor is drspeedometer.com

I have had the clusters in both of my trucks replaced with upgraded clusters.

When I had the cluster replaced in my EXT, the one I took out of that truck had a sticker on the back of it indicating that cluster was already replaced way back in the day under the factory recall.

It had failed a second time after I bought the truck used.

THANK YOU!
I will check out the website- I was even considering taking the panel out and re soldering everything- shouldn't be too hard, one of my 1st jobs was soldering circuit boards together lol just depends on how difficult removing the panel is

I had teh same issue, another member told me about teh solution on YouTUbe .. search YOU TUBE, since you can solder, it is an easy fix.

More than likely it's just a bulb burnt out ,I had several of them out on mine and the tac. Quit working.i sent mine off and they rebuilt it for $150.00

It is a poor solder connection from the factory.

There is also another well known problem on the circuit board that can result in a parasitic electrical draw (this happened on my EXT) that can draw the battery flat over a couple of days time.

Here are a couple of SMA videos discussing problems with these clusters.

Also, in the second video, Eric speaks with a tech at the repair vendor that explains some of the issues that plague these clusters.
