No. But I'm not expecting the media to be overly kind to suv owners.

Sounds like it's going to be more about coping with the price of gas.

They won't pick me as I'm not coping with the price of gas, it's a non-factor which isn't the answer they want to hear.

So it hit during the first hour?  If so, that'll be available on the Today Show web site later today or tomorrow morning.

Nice to finally to a face to the name! He plugged the site, but also mentioned he's giving up the AV for something more fuel efficient. Maybe he meant the AV's no longer the daily driver :'(

Saw this by chance this morning (haven't been here in a while and didn't see this thread).

Thought it was pretty cool, chief    You're a snappy dresser  8)

Plugged the club, too...sort of...although the subject matter isn't helping the cause.

That SHOULD work as a direct link.

On a separate but related note, why when watching Chief did I suddenly have Liesure Suit Larry flashbacks?

Here is the link:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/25600263#25600263

So here was the process or the story behind the story.  I got contacted by both ABC and NBC to do interviews (ABC pending) and NBC wanted to interview me on the same day.  The only reason I was in the white suit is because I'm in Houston this week on business, and had meetings with some Japanese based partners, so I broke lucky that I wasn't slumming.

Anyway there was a lot of questions on where to do this and I want to make a big plug to Knapp Chevrolet in Houston, Texas, who was very generous in letting NBC film on their lot.

So I get out to Hell, errr, Houston on a 95 degree day I mean and they were going to film in the middle of the lot.  Now this is where it gets into, "oh, that's how this is done."

No reporter.  The Producer from the Today Show interviewed me over a cell phone on speaker.  I had to basically stare off into space to make it look like I was talking to someone that wasn't there, but I have practice at that. ;)  I was asked a series of questions over about 20 minutes.  I did my absolute best to spin my answers in a positive light but as you can expect, they had the angle they wanted on their story and they did some slicing and dicing on what I talked about.  So a lot of those interviews you see on TV, no reporter even there, its all done back in the studio, I had no idea.

So as far as what didn't get into the story, I told them I traded my Avalanche in back in April of 2005 and that at today's prices, which has basically doubled since I traded in my Avalanche, it is once again costing me close to $70 to fill up, so I'm back to spending what I was spending on gas.  Yes, I'm saving $4,000 a year so it could be worse, but I have no more benefit because it got all eaten up.

I also talked about how there are a number of fullsize and midsize SUVs available today that are hybrids, and pointed out how the Tahoe hybrid gets the same fuel economy in the city as a 4 cylinder Toyota Camry (that didn't make the story of course - and the fact would remain, it would cost $100 to fill up that Tahoe hybrid, just takes longer to get there).  I also pointed out that people with larger SUVs who need them for work, need them to pull a trailer, need them to carry a large family, these are the people who are getting really hurt by this.

So after about an hour, including 25 odd minutes of filming it got distilled down to three sound bites and some b reel video of me walking across the parking lot like I'm a model for Sean John in desperate need of some plastic surgery and the gym.  Ehhh, that's the news.

As far as the white suit, since their some comments about that.  Was clothes shopping with the girlfriend and every store we went to from the high end to the low end all had white linen suits, so I caved and bought one.  Guess that was a good call.  Although I ate at Fogo Ded Chao last night and had a piece of rare beef dropped right on it, my dry cleaner is going to love that.

Finally, it was FREAKIN' HOT in that parking lot.  As I was standing out there getting interviewed I could feel the heat coming up through my darn feet.  I was cooking!

Let 'em interview me for ABC, heck.  I'll let my Av sit behind me IDLING with the AC on during the interview :)

There are significant reasons for certain people having large vehicles, even at the cost of filling up.  I have my reasons, also have reasons for having a car that would disgust people - a 96 Impala SS.

I also build cars that are far from fuel-efficient :)  800+hp engines tend not to be economical.

GM gave me a gift back in 2005 - it was a payment book for the Grand Prix!

Holy Crap!  Fogo De Chao was like going to cooked meat heaven, oh you want more of this, oh you want more of that, go to our salad bar, its covered in meat too, just eat meat.  EAT EAT EAT!!!  Flip your little coaster over to green and there is just a line of people with skewers of meat who want to slice off a chunk for you, and at about $50 a head, it really isn't a bad deal, but I'm pretty sure I'd be 400 pounds if I ate their regularly.

Nice interview...!  I agree on what you said about putting their spin on it.  We have the same thing happen with our industry.  The media puts their spin  on it and outright lies...

On a separate but related note, why when watching Chief did I suddenly have Liesure Suit Larry flashbacks?

Good job Chief

Excellent job, Chief!

You were articulate and looked great in the suit.

As for the sound bites - I know how it is. My mom got interviewed last year for the LA Times. They talked for ten minutes to her about drug busts in her neighborhood. The only quote the put from her was, "I think they should legalize marijuana."

Also, one of my co-workers was intervened for the local news. He went over the whole elections process and ended up with, "we have three rows of six machines, which means we have eighteen machines."   w00t! He can count!

I'm suprised you didn't mention that you were planning on putting in a 5.3L and a midgate in the Grand Am.  :P

No Grand Am - YECK!  Grand Prix, and you can actually get a Grand Prix with a LS4 5.3L V8 under the hood right from General Motors!

I saw that segment.  Man, did it go by fast.  It was over by the time I realized what I'd heard.  Probably distracted just having flipped over from GMA's gas story about higher prices for paying by credit card where they never bothered to mention that it's generally a violation of the merchant agreement to do that.

Then I went out and washed the Avalanche, before the little flecks of ash became permanent.

Good interview, Chief......you did good.  I thought you looked "snazzy" in white.  Having previously lived in Houston for almost 40 years, I understand your suffering in the heat and humidity.  While you made the valid points that were not aired, it's just another example of NBC's agenda to use "sound bites" in support their news line.  They didn't want to hear about Tahoe Hybrids.....

You're right about that EricB.....If Chief wants to talk about Tahoe Hybrids, he needs to call Sean Hannity.  Hannity will put you on the air.  That's was he drives.

OK....I contacted Sean Hannity and told him how Chief's interview was "edited" leaving out pertinent info leaving a biased slant on the story.  I sent him the video clip link to review.

Chief......if Hannity calls, you'll get better "air time" to cover what NBC edited from today's interview

Great interview and huge kudo's for getting the club some much needed national attention but I guess i'll be the first to be beat on for my going against the stream on this one...

I respect that chief did an awesome job setting up this site, but am i the only one to feel he was hands down the wrong one to interview for this story?  well, i guess, if u're the news station, he'd be the right one as living proof that we should get outta our suv's for gas sippers since even the guy who founded a HUGE "truck club" did that himself...

as a follow up, lemme point out... he got rid of his when fuel was:

"In comparison, in 2005 the average crude oil price was $50 per barrel and the crude oil cost was 53% of the retail price."

a more "fair", "unbiased" report would include a person who, nearly 3 yrs later STILL drives an Av... who better to tell the story of someone paying $100/fill up than, oh, i don't know, someone who's still doing it?  it boils me that the IMPLICATION here is that he's "trading in his avalanche" right now as we speak (notice the car lot backdrop?)... not the reality that he did it when a barrel of oil was less than HALF what it is now... not a real appropriate portrayal imho from the media...

i guess it doesn't surprise me that the media was unbalanced in their reporting... AGAIN... a more balanced reporting would include folks who've at least TRIED to trade their vehicle in for something more fuel economical but couldn't because of how severely burried they are in their current suv... or those who think every penny for the fuel is worth it to them for the safety their family enjoys in it... or how bout folks who want to drive w/e the he!! they want because THEY earned the money and THEY can decide how they wanna spend their own money !

thanx for the link btw, was great to finally put a face to the name :1:

I thought I should mention it the Chief's piece was played by the local NBC affiliate here in Nashville. You could SOOOOOooo tell that they cut and chopped up the interview quite a bit to make it sound the way they wanted to. The Chief did look good though, an he got the plug in so

Didn't look at it that way Fox.  I guess I just figured they found the guy who started this club for this really nice SUV and figured that would be a person to discuss this kind of thing with, but I do see your point.

Now, before anyone bashes the Fox, let me say that I don't think she was in any way bashing Chief, just saying that interviewing someone who no longer owns such a vehicle is a little biased on the media's part.

I believe the only reason I got two paragraphs in the NY Times was because I was an admin on vacation in Alaska on a motorcycle rather than in my Av. There didn't seem to be much interest or mention about our numbers here being stable or anything about the fact that many people just plain need trucks.

BTW, in about 5,000 miles of driving in BC, Yukon and Alaska, I saw one Prius and it was in Sitka, AK. Sitka is sea-locked and has very few miles of road. Gas there was $4.05 a gallon at the time while it was around $4.50 is Seattle.

Dejavu!! I remember when I went to the auto show and took pictures of the new remodeled Avalanche. I was there for the truck to drive through the popcorn. I stayed for a bit and talked to anyone who would listen about our club. I talked about our first upcoming National GTG. All this was kinda exactly as Chief did. Chief through SHC let us know when and where to watch as news about our club was in the limelight. Just like when I hurried home and began to download pictures and movies, Chief had already posted for all to be ready for something big. DougD and I spent the better part of the day and night getting them online. Just like then I had one member come out and criticize me for doing what I had done. You can't please everyone Chief but thanks for taking the time to remind other Avalanche owners that we're out here.

In reading Chief's written explanation on this board about what was said in the interview, he specifically noted that (at least GM) is doing something about SUV mpgs by referring to the Tahoe Hybrid.  Those comments were completely edited from the interview to purposely support NBC's intended agenda.  They want to force SUV owners into driving "jogging shoes".  Those of us who NEED one like me (my 2 businesses demand driving either the AV or a 4-door truck).  Yes, he did comment on selling his, but NBC's use of those comments through editing carefully used the comment out of context.

Besides....there is a lot of "hype" and misunderstanding about MPGs.  Many, many of our membership drive their AVs less than 5K miles a year according to the miles they have posted. For example, Flint4x4 has half the mileage on his '04(I think it's an '04) than I do on my '07.  In contrast, someone who commutes to and from work at 100 miles per day in a "jogging shoe" getting higher MPGs maybe using just as much or MORE gas.  So, which is worse?  Your avg MPGs or how much gas you consume?

Great interview  Chief was the perfect person to talk about the pain that everyone of us is feeling at the gas pump, being the founder of a truck club and having to give that truck up puts him in a very unique position. Really drives the point they were trying to make about the state of the economy due to high gas prices home.

Using the Avalanche as an example was good too because although it's an SUV, it isn't universally hated like a Hummer or ignored like an Expedition.

how is he possibly the "perfect" person to interview for this?  ask him what his highest fill up ticket was THREE YEARS AGO.... then look at your latest gas bill and tell me in a semi-convincing way you wouldn't be a better person to dicuss CURRENT fuel concerns with...

again, nothing against chief but let's at least compare apples with apples here folks...

Because the premise of the story is that high gas prises are driving people out of their SUVs and hurting dealers. Whatever the reasons for trading his AV in on a cheaper car may have been, he is the founder of an SUV club who doesn't own the truck that he started the club for because of costs. It illustrates the point better than finding some yokel off the street in a Hummer and getting him to let out a few grunts about how much gas costs.

In my fragile condition, I've managed to respond to 2 separate threads. Please forgive. The OP I keep referring to is GasCrunch and I know all too well about sound bites and unattended interviews.

My first initial thoughts when this thread popped up today was the fallout from the NYC post the other day. Then the OP started going on about people driving their rigs without passengers.

During my entire driving period of life, I can safely say it has been at least 90% as a single driver. I don't recall looking at other vehicles passing me and wondering why they had only one person or multiple persons. I have questioned a few empty busses and passenger trains on occasion, but I still don't understand the logic of why it matters to someone else what I drive, alone or otherwise. (Other than driving single in HOV lanes, is driving alone a crime?)

As I drove, singly of course, to a scheduled MD appointment this morning, I pondered the OP's initial arguments and the European connection. Of course it never came out that the reason for the high prices in Europe, Japan was due to the taxes to pay for the mass transit infrastructure or other social utopian concepts that do make us different.

I began to think of the past threads Avalanche Fox has posted regarding financing and doing everything but actually bashing people upside the head to make them THINK of what they were getting into before making a new vehicle purchase. I was glad to see that Fox has posted, but what I think has been missing is how quickly we, the driving community, are so quick to jump ship before looking to see how deep the drop is or what the actual cost is going to be in the end.

No one made us go out and buy a less than 20 MPG vehicle. The Auto Industry markets what they can sell. When they can't sell, they find something else that will. Look how long it took for Muscle Cars to return after the debacle of the late 70's. Just as these vehicles were getting legs again, boom, fuel prices climb higher than wild dreams and here we are again, going full circle to small econo boxes.

Since the beginning of time, people have transported themselves as they could afford, just as they have lived. Big houses and large vehicles tend to follow the ability to afford them. Not that people are poor for driving smaller vehicles. It's their choice as it it ours for driving larger and generally more mileage efficient vehicles than most perceived smaller vehicles on the road today.

Ultimately, drive what you want, but mostly, what you can afford.

You are saying that since the founder has chosen to drive something else due to gas prices, it lends more creedence (I hope I spelled that correctly) to the idea that gas prices are affecting us (our psyche).  Correct?

Yes, there are stories on every station every day that feature somebody standing by their huge truck or SUV complaining about the price of gas. Chief's story is unique. (credence)

First of all... my warmest hugs and regards to you and your family... u are truely missed and i hope all the folks u meet in your kindness of donating your time know how special you are to so many of us :A:

Second of all... Folks need to think about how bad it hurts them mathmatically to swap out of an suv into something more fuel efficient... lemme throw out some numbers for you:

figuring an average rate of 6.99% x 60 mos and 7.99% x 72 mos... lets see some math...

for every $5,000 in negative equity to stack on top of your new gas sipper you'd be paying an extra @ $100/Mo for 60 mos... or @ $88/mo for 72 mos ON TOP OF your new car payment and that's not to include the extra taxes, licensing, etc fees you'll be repaying...

most folks that are financing an suv purchased w/in the last 3 years are that way... average person i see on a daily basis trying to trade one in are upside down @ 8-14k... but for the heck of it... let's figure it was only 5k...  now lets go onto some more numbers...

at driving 12k/yr @ 15 mpg for an average on the Av's (i hope most of u will agree that's a fair number to use)...
12,000 / 15 = 800 gallons/year... X $4.00/gallon = $3,200/year... $266/mo

at driving 12k/yr @ 27 mpg for an average on say a honda accord (a 4 door sedan that although reasonably fit a family of 5 on a budget)...
12,000 / 15 = 444 gallons/year... X $4.00/gallon = $1,776/year... $148/mo

so u're netting out, IF u only have $5k in negative equity about $18/mo in net savings if these numbers fit your driving habits, etc.  if that $18/mo is too overwhelming to be in something safer / more room / more versatile, I'd guess i have nothing else to help u with...

now... let's throw something even MORE fun into the mix... if u do have any more than @ $5k in negative ... sooooo few banks are willing to advance for all that extra money on a new vehicle purchase... they're tightening up a TON and the days of letting u stack 10, 15k of negative onto your new vehicle purchase are getting to be loooonngnggggg gone....

Very cool to see you on TV, Chief!

That is AWESOME - I doubt that the editors did that on purpose, just happened to be in the stock film they used.  Great find!

When I traded in my Avalanche I did think about all the angles.  Depreciation already taken on the Avalanche, depreciation on its replacement vehicle, interest rate on the Avalanche, interest rate on the new loan, impact to auto insurance costs, impact to annual registration costs, different maintainence requirements, and meeting my new needs.  In my case, I was commuting solo 52 miles a day in bumper-to-bumper traffic.  At $2.25 a gallon, which was the point when I traded in, I was spending over $4,000 a year on gasoline and made the concious decision that I didn't want to spend that kind of money on gas, but other things.  It wasn't a, "I can't afford it," it was a, "I don't want to pay this."

If you do some back of the napkin math, 28 gallons to "fill up" from near empty at $2.25 costs about $63.00 when the meter goes click.  AHHHH.  But gasoline today is about $4.40 a gallon in Seattle on average, it has doubled in about 38 months.  I have a 17 gallon tank now and a 15 gallon fill up at $4.40, well do some back of the napkin math and it comes out to - $66.  Now of course, as everyone here knows, filling up 28 gallons would be more than $66, I'm better off.  Additionally I'm in a better position jumping off when I did.  As you know A-Fox the trade-ins on large SUVs and trucks are brutal now, I got above dealer sale blue book value on my Avalanche, stripped of most of its modifications (I wasn't going to rip the instrument cluster out as an example) and it was sold one hour later for almost $4,000 more than what they gave me in trade.  That wouldn't happen today and the depreciation curve, which would be flat on my middle aged Avalanche would be increasing again.

I'll make it very clear to everyone, I did bring up the fact that I'm now paying exactly what I paid for a tank of gas three years ago even though I downsized - gas is freakin' expensive.  I've been receiving a number of phone calls and e-mails after the interview aired and the NYT story, there will be more to come out of this I think.  I talked to someone today and explained to them that a Toyota Sienna minivan was a 22 gallon gas tank, and if you run that to near empty, you're damn close to a $100 fill up, this isn't just an SUV issue.

The "agenda" of the story was the psyche of the $100 tank of gas, I think they nailed the point well.  I did point out also in my broader interview that there are people that own SUVs and trucks that have large families, or businesses, or hauling/trailering needs and they REQUIRE these vehicles and that these are the people really hurting from these prices.  My mention of other hybrids went beyond the Tahoe, I tried to make it agnostic (and in defense of NBC, at the request of the producer after I brought up the Tahoe) that there are other fullsize and midsize SUV hybrid options available from a number of manufacturers.

I don't feel they biased the story, I wished the point that even though I traded in, I'm now paying more money than before (although technically when you adjust for inflation it is less money), and that there are real people out there being impacted by the $100 tank of gas.

One other thing I forgot to mention which is REALLY important to me, and I want people EVERYWHERE to know Toyota's true colors.

When I was initially contacted for the story they asked if I knew a filming location, having not lived in Houston for ten years now, advised I wouldn't be the best person, but the producers wanted some trucks/SUVs in the background.  I told them I had been in the Toyota Center (where the Houston Rockets play) the admin officers were open and they had a huge truck and SUV display inside the Toyota Center (and my selfish motivation was not having to do the interview inside).

Toyota DENIED ACCESS.

Why?  Exact words, "Toyota does not want our products associated with a story on high fuel prices."

Really?  Then why do you have a big display of your worst gas guzzlers, the Sequoia, the Tundra, and the FJ Cruiser when you walk into the Toyota Center???  You've got gas guzzling on display (and the only car I saw in the hold center was a lone Corolla S).

I will say again, if you live in Houston, Steve, the owner of Knapp Chevrolet was a brave man to allow us to use his lot (you wouldn't know from the video at the end of the day) and talk about his declined business.  I'll also add, they didn't take out his, "better days are ahead," point in the story.  If you live in the greater Houston Area and drive a Chevrolet, consider kicking some business there way, even if its just your next oil change for any Chevrolet you're rolling around in, and when you do, make sure you let them know you're there to support them for doing the news story.

And Toyota can go copulate themselves, bunch of hypocrites, it will catch up with them one day.

I thought I should mention it the Chief's piece was played by the local NBC affiliate here in Nashville. You could SOOOOOooo tell that they cut and chopped up the interview quite a bit to make it sound the way they wanted to. The Chief did look good though, an he got the plug in so

Someone should contact WSMV in Nashville no later than TOMORROW and let them know that the CAFCNA National Meet is in their backyard this up coming weekend (well the weekend after that weekend, you know what I mean) and that it ties in beautifully with the national feed story they picked up.  Then they can talk to the local owners on how they are coping, and I'm sure at least a few people who wouldn't give up their Avalanche if gas was $20 a gallon.

Saw the interview this morning and heard the plug for the site! I tivo'd the show so I could watch the whole interview later as I was heading out the door to work.

Great job and nice suit! ;)

So I get out to Hell, errr, Houston on a 95 degree day I mean and they were going to film in the middle of the lot.  Now this is where it gets into, "oh, that's how this is done."

Great interview, wish they would have played all of your interview, but I guess the left handed media can't have anything positive to air.  That would contradict their entire reason for being.  The reason why I refuse to watch most any news program, worthless lies.

As for the hot day...I can't wait until Southern Nevada cools down into the 95* range.  Heck, the low temp here just before sunrise is in the 90's.

I will keep my fingers crossed that Sean Hannity calls on you, or the National's Crew, for a story of truth.

Nice interview, sorry it was chopped up.

As far as promoting the AV and this site maybe we all could consider an unofficial "avalanche" of the media in our areas. As an example, get the media to cover the Nationals especially the charity efforts and bring up the fact that even with high gas prices owners travel all over to the meets and help kids. (Maybe even invite local dealers and GM brass to attend as well to see the enthusiasm for the AV and that there is still a demand for a large size vehicle.)
This effort could be multiplied at various GTGs all over the country.
Years ago most people hated bikers but things have changed with all the charity events and positive press they have gotten.

No Grand Am - YECK!  Grand Prix, and you can actually get a Grand Prix with a LS4 5.3L V8 under the hood right from General Motors!

my bad!

I still think of Smokey and the Bandit whenever I think of a Grand Am.  I know the grand prix is supposed to be nicer.

Aren't they both FWD, tho?

Chief-

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing the back story with us. I also appreciate pointing out Toyota's stance on the matter.

Like others have said, it is great putting a face to the name. I've had the pleasure of meeting some of the admins on the board in person, but never the founder. Although it was a virtual meet, it was a great one...

Everyone else-

On a different note. Why can't a family have the best of both worlds? Why does it have to be either a gus guzzler or a fuel sipper? I have both and absolutely LOVE it.

My TDI is my daily commuter and I got 40 mpg with no compromises.. its fast, fun comfortable and economical. But for the weekends, travel and home projects, the AV is the order of the day and it rocks. The AV is the perfect truck for me and I love mine. I feel like I have a cake and I'm eating it too.

The perfect combo:

I see no reason why others couldn't do the same. Ot at least why nobody talks about it. ;)

...... If you live in the greater Houston Area and drive a Chevrolet, consider kicking some business there way, even if its just your next oil change for any Chevrolet you're rolling around in, and when you do, make sure you let them know you're there to support them for doing the news story.

Chief.....lived in Houston for almost 40 years and bought every Chevy I owned from them.  They are the best Chevy dealer I have ever dealt with.

I always thought he drove a Trans Am   :dunno:

He did. I owned 2 of em. One was a 77 special edition with the Olds 403and an at. The second one was also a 77 that began life with a Pontiac 400 w/Hurst 4 speed.. I swapped it out for a SD455 from a 72 Pontiac TA. Both were Starlight Black and had more decals than Revell packs with their model cars currently.

Good idea.   Actually I beleive Chevrolet and local dealers were invited to last years Nationals, and I would suspect the offer was extended again this year.  Also many members have talked with local dealers about the club and/or invited local dealers to events and GTG's.  WE also had the local news channel at Nationals last year for the day at the youth home.  They had a very nice news story interviewing Todd and bringing positive attention to CAFCNA and the childrens home.

If anyone is planning a large GTG in their area, call the local news and invite them.  Who knows, maybe you will make the national news, and hopefully without being misquoted or taken out of context.

I'm half mile from the river and 5 miles from a nice lake to use my peddle boat. Looking at electric trolling motors but it's not about mpg really, I'm more a canoe paddler or let the river current take me for a lazy day on the water guy. Same for living close to work, it's the time I save rather than the gas important to me. An hour less on the road each way is two hours more on the water.

No offense Chief but I don't think anyone yet said,...

I'll talk!  I have a Z71 Tahoe AND a '93 Honda Accord with manual transmission.

I get 24mpg highway with my truck and the car gets about 36-40.

Love them both!

I will not get rid of my truck.  I use it and it's worth more to me in my driveway than trying to trade it on something I don't like.

Teksavy, you've got a great point. (How'd you slip a TDI VW into California??)  I think many people should be able to do this.  I almost did - in buying a late '80s Mercedes 300D or 300SD - but decided I liked the comfort of the truck, even for my daily commute.

It's not always about MPG, as Flint4x4 said it is also the mies you drive, like "living close to work". Erin Burnet yum yum.
