*********************************************************************************************

(See Announcing "The 1st Worldwide CAFCNA GTG!" July 23rd - 25th, 2010 thread here.)

*********************************************************************************************

First, all apologies to any and all other Cruise Coordinators in Region V.  I thought it would be better to put this thread at the region level instead of repeating it for every state.

Second, I don't presume to be in charge of any GTG in the West.  I am not automatically taking any leadership role nor do I wish to upstage any person here.  I am simply offering my help.

Third, So what do you think?

Do you want to have 1 big Region V GTG?  Do you want to have multiples?  One in every state?

Let me tell you where I'm coming from:
First, I made a proposal for the 2009 National GTG in Reno, NV.  I think that proposal was greatly received.  I am not ashamed at all that another proposal for San Antonio Texas was chosen.  I am sad that they did not have as great a turn out as we had hoped.

Second, I was asked to revisit the 2009 Proposal for 2010, which I did.  In response to a suggestion, I made it a "travelling" GTG.  That is, starting in Reno, heading thru Sacramento, and into the Bay Area.  I even had a day scheduled for us to drive on the track at Sears Point / Infinion Raceway / whatever they are calling the track in Napa these days!  But again, I think trying to get allot of people onto the West Coast from the East Coast would be a bit of an issue, especially in this economy.  Thus the "World Wide GTG" was born.

So, looking for options /  opinions / suggestions /  recommendations / etc.  I know we're a very stretched out Region, with over 1700 miles from North to South.  (Yes, I checked - 1751 miles from Blaine, WA to Sierra Vista, AZ!)

Anyways, post your comments below.

Let me just make one rule: Be respectful of others recommendations.  I KNOW that there is no way we can satisfy every person, so just put your suggestions out there and lets not jump on any bandwagon.

Since you were the one to strike first I say you should be the point man in setting something up for the whole region  ;D

Sorry I missed this thread Chris.  You've got some great suggestions.  Speaking for myself I could only do a one-dayer because of our toddlers.  If you do do a pass through, we'd be glad to participate.  (y)

I favor a single large GTG like Kfalls style myself.

I vote Bend, I need some good Deschutes beer.  Plus it would be close enough that some of the Idaho, EWA, EOR folks can join as well.

What about CA, NV & AZ? It will be far for some, so if we need more than one that's OK.

This is why the idea is so cool, you can have as many as you want.

For the SAC and Bay Area locations I would recommend the following locations:

- Elk Grove Regional Park.  Since we're residents, we could reserve space

http://www.yourcsd.com/parks/parks_picnics.asp

- Crissy Field, San Francisco.  We've had GTG many times in the past.  It's also somewhat central for South Bay and East Bay members.

Just an FYI - I contacted Infineon Raceway again.  That particular weekend is taken up with Drag Races - no possible tour then.

But I like the Elk Grove idea.  Maybe we could do a Sac/Bay area GTG with a Napa trip on Friday and Park on Saturday.  Any other suggestions.

Just as another FYI - here's the proposal I put together for the last GTG.  Maybe there is something in there that people would like to do.  So here goes:

Proposed 2010 National Chevy Avalanche Get Together

Location: Reno, Nevada to Sacramento, California

Saturday:  Sign-in Reno, Nevada.  Grand Sierra Resort (~$80-100/night)
Self-guided points of interest.  Choose from:
  • National Automotive Museum/Casinos
  • National Bowling Stadium
  • ATV/Off-Roading Tours
  • Harley Motorcycle Tours
  • Balooning/Skydiving/Soaring/Hang-gliding
  • Kayaking/WhiteWater River Rafting/Truckee River Water Park
  • Wild Island Family Adventure Park (Water park/Arcade/golf/etc)
  • Native Cultures Tour/Ghost Trails/Rock Art Tour
  • Other Options?

Sunday:  Driving Cruise around Donner Lake/Virginia City, or self-guided above.

Monday:  ?The Most Beautiful Drive In America? ? 72 mile loop around Lake Tahoe, or self guided.

Option 1A:
Tuesday: Move Hotels to Sacramento (Hotel TBD ~$50-75/night), ~135 miles.  Stop enroute at Sutter?s Mill for Gold Panning.
Wednesday:  Old Town Sacramento & State Capitol, Tour of San Francisco, Fisherman?s Wharf, Alcatraz, Lombard Street Photo-op
Thursday:  Tour of Napa and Wineries (Designated Drivers Anyone?), possible Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) Tour and Parade Lap.
Friday: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Theme Park  (Groups >50 are about 40% off)

Option 1B:
Tuesday: Move Hotels to Oakhurst/surrounding area (Hotel TBD ~$150/night), ~250 miles.   Drive past Mono Lake and through north Yosemite National Park on Hwy 120 ? Tioga Road (weather permitting)
Wednesday:  South Entrance of Yosemite Valley ($20/AV entrance fee).  View El Capitan & Half Dome
Thursday:  Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway, ~100 mile loop, including dirt roads.
Friday: Drive to Sacramento (~185 miles) and join Option 1A group at same hotel.

Saturday: Show-N-Shine BBQ at Discovery Park (Sacramento), Raffle, Awards
Sunday: Leave for home.

I'm not suggesting any of these things.  I'm just providing ideas of stuff that might be interesting to everyone.  Please post your ideas.

I did a Napa Valley Wine tour way back when, that was fun!

I did too - about 12-1/2 yrs ago.  My girlfriend became my fiance at the end of that trip.  (In an Olive Garden restaurant of all places!)

Does your wife know? >:D

I definitely like option 1A even though we might not personally be to attend all the events  (y)  We would be glad, however, to be the tour guide the the Sacramento and maybe San Francisco activities.

I don't think this option will be possible with the live internet connection requirement. We won't know for sure until the inet hookup details are ironed out. It just seems to me we will need some help getting a linkup from an established location.; being free to roam may be too difficult.

If internet access is an issue, there's always Clearwire, provided they have coverage in the area... just need a generator or something to supply the power to the router...
Just a thought.  :D

Power is easy. We just use marine 12 volt batteries with 115v converters.

There is talk of maybe it being in town, and not out at a remote field or landmark. Something like Cabelas, or a grocery store of some sort to do fund raising. I was happy when we were going for a Hooters GTG record.

If it turns out to be a food drive, then Cabelas and Hooters will be out.

Are members allowed to speak up on any of this?

Sure thing Joyce  (Hi  ), that's why the thread is here. If you can read it, you can post about it.  (y)

Ok then I am going to add my two cents lol. In reading this it seems that most of the plans will be located on the west coast. Now I can not speak for others but since running to two Wild West gtg it has been quite a journey for me personally and trying to do that many miles in a short span is just getting to be too much. Region 5 also encompasses Utah, Montana, Idaho , and Wyoming. Reno is closer for some but not others and again in light of the economy I do not think you will get many coming from the outer areas. Just saying. Due to the size of the western states one can really rack up some miles. For me coming from Utah to go to Oregon or San Fransisco it would just not work.
I love the plans you have really Chris and it looks like a great gtg but sadly again this would for me anyway be yet another national I would miss. I can not do an entire week and for a few days it is just too far and add not knowing what the economy is going to be I would have to say it is not a go for me. I was hoping the Utah Avs might do something more closer. But this is Marks call and I trust him to make a good choice. Skip is in Montana and I have to go it alone for now until he finds work closer to home.

The beauty of this plan is we can have as many GTG locations as needed. Please contact your closest CC to setup a GTG that would be easy for you to attend. I have not seen anything started in your area yet.

Maybe you will be the spark we need to ignite the fire Red.  (y)

Joyce -

Yeah, I know that as a Region, we are VERY stretched out.  I figure we'll probably have 2-3 (or more) different GTGs in the region.  And I think that's great!  In fact, I may be even motivated enough to try to head to a different GTG somewhere else, even if there is one closer.

I think at this point, we're just looking for ideas.  Tell us something you would like to do!  I know that we have had some discussion in the CC Back room (which I won't reveal yet), but we definitely want to do something.  It doesn't have to be a full week or even a full weekend thing - it could just be a small GTG at a park / someones house / roadtrip / etc.

I was liking your MT/WY trip - looked great!  Heck, maybe I can be persuaded to come to Utah!  We just want to hear ideas.  So let us know!

You know Utah has a lot to offer seriously. It is really worth thinking about too. I would hate to miss a year not running with Ruby. I know there are tons of plans going on and I am willing to roll as you know just not that far. I am so hyped over this WW national I can't wait to see what all comes up. Just felt I had to contribute

Don't worry Aussie, there will be a GTG in Utah. We will be talking about it much more very soon! As soon as lawn care season is over for me I will be able to start putting much more of my time into the club and specifically the Worldwide GTG. I will definitely be calling on you to help out! The idea of the Worldwide GTG is to allow every member to be able to participate. The more GTG's the better.

I knew Mark was already on it. Lawn care I think has about had it   beginning to think the snow removal season is upon us. Mark I know you already have your wheels turning. If it is anything close to the great gtgs we have had this year we are in for a real treat.
