26+ MPG!!!
« on: 11/23/09 10:12 AM »

I did an experiment yesterday during a long drive. At 55 mph with no wind and mostly flat ground (some small hills). I went 111.6 miles off of 4.254 gallons of gas. That is 26.23 MPG!!! I had a light load in the box (suitcase, smalll toolbox, winter survival kit, and a few other small things). This is by far the best I have ever done, by about 7.5 MPG.  The next leg of the trip I bumped it up to 60 MPH. I dropped to about 20 MPG. Then I bumped it up to 75 MPH and got about 15.5. Its amazing what slowing down a little does for mileage. What is the best you guys have gotten? I had never gotten above 19. I have also never driven less than 60 MPH for any amount of time though.

On long trips, I can average 20mpg, and that's at 75-80mph, keeping the rpm just under 2000, and not a lot of start/stop traffic (aka outside of NJ).

Normal city driving, I get about 15.

Most of my highway running is at 65-67 mph and I get around that 19mpg.

At 75-80 I run almost 2500 RPM. What rear end do you have?

I would guess teh 3.xx gearing.

I consistently drive at around 70-75 on the highway and am right at 2100-2300 rpm.

Hey, 6000lbs is just that. Add enough resistance and the aerodynamics of a brick and watch those mpgs go down. My personal best is right at 23.5mpg, in completely flat parts of Texas going 65mph, no wind, with a crew of three and about 500lbs of luggage. Tires were right at 38psi and are fairly hard (680 treadwear).

I could see 26mpg going 55, no hills, no wind, tires running slightly hard and very little load. The 5.3 is an amazing all around performer. It's made a true believer out of me. Now the stock transmission is another story, but an outstanding engine.

I have been avg. 24.4 mpg at 65mph with my Av. so far, have been watching the mpg. on my scan gauge which plugs into the computer plug under the dash.
Several other people on this form also have scan gauges.

i can see 27 mpg if I reset the guage while driving and on flat straight road.   hwy I avg 17-18 lately at 70-80mph.   13-14 to and from work.
In the Tahoe (with displacement on demand), I hit 30 mph at 60mph on a flat straight road for 35 min straight!

The drive back from roughly Las Vegas to Salt Lake City I got a bit over 16 according to the trip computer.  All highway, lots of mountains, speeds typically between 70 and 85 using cruise.  About what I expected, but I was hoping for closer to 20.

Did you reset the DIC prior to the trip. If you didn't you are getting an average MPG from the last time the DIC was reset. So it may actually be better than you think.

By the by - just came back from a trip to Northern California.  Based on both hand and DIC calculations, I got 18.6 (18.5 via the DIC) miles per gallon.

yes, I reset it.  I suspect going from SLC to Vegas (actually Clearfield UT to Bullhead City AZ) or round trip would be slightly better.

Wow....I would kill for some of the numbers you guys are getting.

My 02 Z71 currently has slightly more aggressive tires than the stockers but even when I had street tires and wheels off of a Danali the best I ever saw was 16 or so on the highway and about 13 around town .  Now with the more aggressive tires I am about at 11-12 city  and 15ish highway.  I did seem to do better by one or two with the K&N in (been out for a bit , cleaned it,oiled it and forgot to put her back in , has paper element in now).

Has 104K on her now and probably needs new plugs/wires/belt along with greasing the wheel bearings.  Have had her throw the dreaded codes for knock sensors under the intake a few times as well (setting off the check engine light) so I need to change those out - I am sure that could help , along with cleaning the intake out when its off .

I'm baffled by how anyone is getting mid-20's in MPG, unless they are going downhill the whole time.   :o  The best I ever got, and that was only once, was 18 MPG on a long trip to Indianapolis.  Typically the most I get is 17 MPG, and I average 14 to 15 MPG in mixed driving.  Towing our 5000 lb travel trailer, I get 9-11 MPG.

I just took two trips totaling about 2400 miles. The first trip was bone stock and averaged 18mpg. I installed a Spectre CAI and E3 plugs before the second trip and didn't see much of an improvement, it went to 19mpg. Performance is better but just not seeing the mileage improvement.

Just got back from a road trip - UT to OR, up to WA, back to OR, over to Eastern OR, then back to UT.  Average for the trip was 17.6mpg.  Lots of different speed limits plus me experimenting with different speeds via cruise control.  I was getting low 20's at 60mph, same stretch at 80mph the mpg drops to around 15.  It makes sense, but I was surprised that 20mph made a difference of 7 or 8 mpg.

I used to hit nearly 20mpg (~19.5) every tank but lately it has been less.  My all time best was 22.4mpg this past October driving through Indiana and into Ohio (lot of construction speeds).  Once I got closer to Michigan it dropped (18-19mpg) as I was pushing towards 80mph.  I just got back from a cross country trip, I computed one tank as 20.3mpg but overall it worked out as 17.8mpg somehow.  I think I may try cheating and see if I can find e0 gas to help bump up the mileage... probably time for plugs and wires too since I'm @ 75k already.

draft behind an 18 wheeler and you will see 20+

w/ the 8.1L i can get 16mpg if i go 55mph behind a bigger truck...that will save me 50 bucks on a road trip and take about a half hour longer per tank as opposed to going 75 and having to stop for gas more frequently @ 10mpg.  ethanol and wind resistance kill fuel economy but i make up for it in comfort modifications and enjoyment while driving in comfort.

Bought 02 Avalanche Z71 brand new with 4.10 gears July 2001. Made 2 cross country trips since of over 8,000 miles each and averaged 19+ going 75 to 80 MPH. Did not buy it for the MPG but it is better than expected. Can not believe the front discs are still original with 120,000 miles on them. I have them checked every tire rotation and expect to finally put new ones on.

On highway trips I try to keep the speed at 65MPH and get about 20-21 MPG. When I tow my skiff it drops to
about 17 MPG. My Avy is a 2002 Z66 and it likes the ethanol free gas the best. We are lucky down here that
there are a lot of boaters, so that gas is available and gives the best MPG's

Ethanol kills gas mileage.  It's cheaper (in most places), but the cost savings doesn't justify the decrease in gas mileage.

I think there's a law that stations have to use 10% ethanol, so if you are using pure gas, then your mileage would be better by default.  (I think the 10% law is only for winter months, but it could be year-round now.)

Non ethanol gas is more $$ but it doesn't destroy outboard engines like ethanol does. Outboards aren't geared up to the ethanol and things like primerbulbs are falling apart leaving boaters stranded or in worse situations....
I am lucky I can find it where I work and live. Besides my truck doing better, so does my motorcycle and my boat.
Customers don't like it when I go uhoh...;D

The morons at the EPA are clueless that it actually costs more energy to make a gallon of ethanol than it gives back in BTU's... Further more there is talk about upping it to 15% :E:
Oh well what can you do??

Averaging 12.1 on last 2 tanks- lots of highway driving at 80 mph which is about 2800 rpm (4.10 axle and 496 cu in).  The 5.3 is very efficient and will do well at cruising speeds.

Bassbuff- I suggest you get rid of those E3 plugs and put some AC Delco platinums or iridiums in. The E3 is great in lawnmowers.

2002 Z71 with almost 99K on it and I recently drove about 480 miles on the highway and got 18.1 miles per gallon.  At fill up I put in just under 26.5 gallons which meant with my over 28 gallon tank I could have run a 500 mile tank, a first for me.

Thanks for the good advice, I actually put irridiums in it a few months ago. Much better throttle response! Just drove to GA from North LA today and was averaging around 17.5 mpg doing 73-74 on E10 gas. Before E10 took over I was getting 19 on these trips with the irridiums :E:!

After replacing my plugs, front O2 sensors, fuel filter and 8.5 mm MSD plug wires as well as two bottles of Techron, I am still getting only 13.5 range (two tanks after the parts and one tank on the Techron).  I'm beginning to think I have clogged cats and that the vibration/drone I sense at 70+ MPH isn't suspension related but rather back pressure building up.  I checked both pre and post CAT temperatures.  Driver side had a bit higher temperature at the exit while the driver side was the same or lower at the exit.

A little surprised about 26 mpg. My 2004 Avalanche with over 192,000 miles typically gets between 20-22 mpg at 65 mpg with a few hills but NOT on cruise control. At faster speeds, it will drop noticeably and will be down about 17 mpg at 70+ mpg. Looking at my scan gauge, the mpg drops significantly as speed goes up or even more when it downshifts going up a hill (like less than 5 mpg). The speed/mileage relationship makes sense when you recognize you are driving a big box. But it is a comfortable ride and my wife likes being up high driving on the interstates with 18-wheelers.

Haha! Hadn't read this thread in awhile. I don't even track the mileage in my AV anymore.

I just filled my 2000 Jetta TDI and got 40.1 MPG.  No ethonol there!

My 04 Z71 has averaged around 15-16 around town with some freeway mixed in.  Since I live in Colorado, there are few places of straight level roads.  Going from Castle Rock to Phoenix, AZ, I can expect about 18-19 mpg average going over 7000ft three times.  I am always at 80 on the freeway unless the speed limit is 65 or less.  Tire pressure makes more of a difference for me.  Keep them up around 36-38 for freeways.  Costco kept dropping the Michelins to 34.  Firestone keeps them at 38.

Love resurrecting old threads.

By the way, I took this pic today after driving into work. My trip mileage on my Malibu hybrid was 62.5 MPG. Been averaging 47 MPG overall.

When my '04 was nearly new I got over 20 mpg on several longer trips, one way  :P

Usually averaged out to 17 or 17.5 round trip but it's not as predictable as up hill and down.

A stiff headwind or crosswind will drop your average in a boxy Avalanche quick as spitting.

I have done 23 going from Coachella, to San Fernando Valley, and back. That's with a couple of street driving, messing around, testing the power in the street. But weather was perfect and flow of traffic was perfect that trip

I'm averaging about 14:8. That's with 35 inch toyos that are 13.5 wide. Z71.you guys are doin great with 20+ mpgs.

That is about what I am getting on my 02 NFE with 35's.  I think I might be able to get 26 MPG if I drop it off a really big cliff.
