I used to hit nearly 20mpg (~19.5) every tank but lately it has been less.  My all time best was 22.4mpg this past October driving through Indiana and into Ohio (lot of construction speeds).  Once I got closer to Michigan it dropped (18-19mpg) as I was pushing towards 80mph.  I just got back from a cross country trip, I computed one tank as 20.3mpg but overall it worked out as 17.8mpg somehow.  I think I may try cheating and see if I can find e0 gas to help bump up the mileage... probably time for plugs and wires too since I'm @ 75k already.

draft behind an 18 wheeler and you will see 20+

w/ the 8.1L i can get 16mpg if i go 55mph behind a bigger truck...that will save me 50 bucks on a road trip and take about a half hour longer per tank as opposed to going 75 and having to stop for gas more frequently @ 10mpg.  ethanol and wind resistance kill fuel economy but i make up for it in comfort modifications and enjoyment while driving in comfort.
i like watching the rubberneckers buzz past and wonder wtf i'm driving

Average 15 highway and city; if I drive 55 around here, I would be run over, or run off the road. The state police would pull me over, thinking I had been drinking.

Bought 02 Avalanche Z71 brand new with 4.10 gears July 2001. Made 2 cross country trips since of over 8,000 miles each and averaged 19+ going 75 to 80 MPH. Did not buy it for the MPG but it is better than expected. Can not believe the front discs are still original with 120,000 miles on them. I have them checked every tire rotation and expect to finally put new ones on.

Drove from North Georgia to Port Canaveral FL and back last week.  Averaged between 75 and 80 mpg on the interstate.  Never could get my mpg to average over 16.1 ...

On highway trips I try to keep the speed at 65MPH and get about 20-21 MPG. When I tow my skiff it drops to
about 17 MPG. My Avy is a 2002 Z66 and it likes the ethanol free gas the best. We are lucky down here that
there are a lot of boaters, so that gas is available and gives the best MPG's

Ethanol kills gas mileage.  It's cheaper (in most places), but the cost savings doesn't justify the decrease in gas mileage.

I think there's a law that stations have to use 10% ethanol, so if you are using pure gas, then your mileage would be better by default.  (I think the 10% law is only for winter months, but it could be year-round now.)

Non ethanol gas is more $$ but it doesn't destroy outboard engines like ethanol does. Outboards aren't geared up to the ethanol and things like primerbulbs are falling apart leaving boaters stranded or in worse situations....
I am lucky I can find it where I work and live. Besides my truck doing better, so does my motorcycle and my boat.
Customers don't like it when I go uhoh...;D

The morons at the EPA are clueless that it actually costs more energy to make a gallon of ethanol than it gives back in BTU's... Further more there is talk about upping it to 15% :E:
Oh well what can you do??

I've had my NFE Av for a year now and only once have I had it above 18 mpg. Going from Fort Worth to San Antonio isn't the flatest terrain and average 70 mph.

Averaging 12.1 on last 2 tanks- lots of highway driving at 80 mph which is about 2800 rpm (4.10 axle and 496 cu in).  The 5.3 is very efficient and will do well at cruising speeds.

Bassbuff- I suggest you get rid of those E3 plugs and put some AC Delco platinums or iridiums in. The E3 is great in lawnmowers.

2002 Z71 with almost 99K on it and I recently drove about 480 miles on the highway and got 18.1 miles per gallon.  At fill up I put in just under 26.5 gallons which meant with my over 28 gallon tank I could have run a 500 mile tank, a first for me.

Thanks for the good advice, I actually put irridiums in it a few months ago. Much better throttle response! Just drove to GA from North LA today and was averaging around 17.5 mpg doing 73-74 on E10 gas. Before E10 took over I was getting 19 on these trips with the irridiums :E:!

After replacing my plugs, front O2 sensors, fuel filter and 8.5 mm MSD plug wires as well as two bottles of Techron, I am still getting only 13.5 range (two tanks after the parts and one tank on the Techron).  I'm beginning to think I have clogged cats and that the vibration/drone I sense at 70+ MPH isn't suspension related but rather back pressure building up.  I checked both pre and post CAT temperatures.  Driver side had a bit higher temperature at the exit while the driver side was the same or lower at the exit.

A little surprised about 26 mpg. My 2004 Avalanche with over 192,000 miles typically gets between 20-22 mpg at 65 mpg with a few hills but NOT on cruise control. At faster speeds, it will drop noticeably and will be down about 17 mpg at 70+ mpg. Looking at my scan gauge, the mpg drops significantly as speed goes up or even more when it downshifts going up a hill (like less than 5 mpg). The speed/mileage relationship makes sense when you recognize you are driving a big box. But it is a comfortable ride and my wife likes being up high driving on the interstates with 18-wheelers.

Haha! Hadn't read this thread in awhile. I don't even track the mileage in my AV anymore.

I just filled my 2000 Jetta TDI and got 40.1 MPG.  No ethonol there!

My 04 Z71 has averaged around 15-16 around town with some freeway mixed in.  Since I live in Colorado, there are few places of straight level roads.  Going from Castle Rock to Phoenix, AZ, I can expect about 18-19 mpg average going over 7000ft three times.  I am always at 80 on the freeway unless the speed limit is 65 or less.  Tire pressure makes more of a difference for me.  Keep them up around 36-38 for freeways.  Costco kept dropping the Michelins to 34.  Firestone keeps them at 38.

Love resurrecting old threads.

By the way, I took this pic today after driving into work. My trip mileage on my Malibu hybrid was 62.5 MPG. Been averaging 47 MPG overall.

When my '04 was nearly new I got over 20 mpg on several longer trips, one way  :P

Usually averaged out to 17 or 17.5 round trip but it's not as predictable as up hill and down.

A stiff headwind or crosswind will drop your average in a boxy Avalanche quick as spitting.
