Z66 question - Bump Stops Superceded Pics inside
« on: July 1, 2010, 20:30:21 PM »

I was looking under my Avy today, and noticed I don't have the coil over shocks. Looked up AutoZone's spec sheets and my front end is set up more like the 4WD, This something to do with the towing package or are they all like this? I'll have to get some pictures up here, but there's these rubber looking mounts that are rotting away. Haven't been to find out what their called.

I don't think that any 2004 Avalanches have coil over shocks......

Torsion bar suspension was standard on all 2002- 2006 avys...

Rubber looking things are probably the bump stops...
mine rotted away... and they are important as it is last resort for suspenion travel to prevent metal on metal contact....

I am trying to find them too...

While inspecting my brakes the other day I too noticed that mine are wearing, well practially worn, as well. I have an 04 z66 with 118k miles.

After you guys told me what they were, I found some with part numbers, but their for 20" rims. I figure with a few mods they might fit.

Bump Stop Number: 15161761
Kit Number: 12499481

Found this post off another site. These are not my pictures, but gives a clue on what to do.
Also found out that they are made of foam, their not even rubber. Supposely it gives a better cushion, but what a pain to have to replace them after only 100k miles.

here's the link just incase the pictures dont post.

Found these on ebay. Not real cheap, but their made of rubber and not foam.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Timbren-Front-Bump-Stops-02-06-Chevy-Avalanche-2WD-4WD-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45f06edf5dQQitemZ300386541405QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I am not sure those are the correct parts. The stock parts are called jounce stops and act as part of the suspension, they are not just bump stops. They fit into a cup and just pull out and press in there are no bolts or even a place to put the bolt as shown on the ones on ebay.....

I found some that look like they will fit, but there for a Jeep. Give you an idea what they look like. I found them for $10 for a pair on another site. I am going to buy them and see how this works out.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GEV9SG/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001GEV9QI&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1G6ZQH380VVPHSZFSXET

I've also seen them go over the shock. Who knows, if they work, I'll post pictures. If not, I'll post pictures of my mistake...lol. I guess Chevy didnt think  no one would think about replacing them. I been all over trying to find them.

Sent email to RMS and he talked to GM and well they say they have superseded old part into 2 new parts.
one for 1/2-3/4 ton trucks.

http://www.rmsautoparts.com/proddetail.php?prod=15153958

No pic up yet as he just ran it by Gm rep.

WOW! I just did the very same thing and got this Email back from RMS less than a hour ago......

Good afternoon, Butch:

After going round and round with my GM rep (which I am sure you have been
doing the same to figure this out) we have determined that GM has
"superseded" these bumpers to two different part numbers based on the
"size" of the truck.  There are another set of lower control arm bumpers
attached to the frame that mess the parts books up as well. (We love GM
naming conventions)  At then end of all this research, my GM rep says
these are the correct bumpers for you:

15153958 - Bump Stop (1/2 - 3/4 Ton Full Size Truck)
http://www.rmsautoparts.com/proddetail.php?prod=15153958
It will take a day or so to get them in from GM.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can get for you?

OK, so you be the guinea pig, let us know if it is in fact the correct part and if your Avalanche has a better ride after installing them please.

That sounds like a good plan. I am especially interested to see if you notice an improvement in your ride. I have read that they are a part of the suspension, not just a bump stop.

Did you see the line in our email from RMS: "There are another set of lower control arm bumpers

I do not remember seeing that bump stop but if we have them shouldn't they keep the "clank" away?

Post man knocked today...
and I installed my new bump stops!!!
Have not driven but I do not care as it will keep me from bottoming out!

They fit well..
for passenger side turn wheel to left.
Jack up on frame a good ways.. (tire can still be on ground)
You can chock rear tire if you desire..
Flat head screw driver used to remove remnants of old spongy bump stop stuck up in cup....
Install new bump stop by slipping part away from tire in first then prying reest of it into cups where there are some tabs holding it in..

Repeat opposite side but turn wheel other way...

Easy to install.. (little dirty from road grime)...

I am happy!!! so here is solution and I am sure others sell the part but RMS came thru to get new PN and send me pic so I thank them.

here is to a smooth bump free ride

Drove it... finally to Home Cheapo to pick up some Home improvement stuff...

Felt like what I remember?? maybe... it has been a long time since I had the original bump stops..

I can say it felt great going over speed bumps.... no metal on metal contact anymore...

BUY them if you need bump stops

Has anyone looked at the bumpers made by Energy Suspension? It seems that they would last longer then the rubber ones...

Bump!

Any other sources for these parts?  Are the sources still valid?  Did any one get this to work at a dealer?

Mine are shot and I want to get these replaced.

I was checking that out after seeing it posted in another thread. Looks like it might be perfect for those of us who have leveled out the truck and now have a gap between the factory bushing and the A-arm.
I'm gonna try it out in the spring.

http://chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,121118.msg1855378.html#msg1855378

I bought them
installed them
and use them..

they work fine...

Tjhe timbrens would provide a stiffer ride then I want on my Z66

I finally have some time to replace these and I wanted to get them local.  I was trying the dealer but he said this part does not fit the 02 Z66.  I did not believe this as you and others have had success.  I wanted to start with the original part and let him walk through for himself.

I ran into the same wall with the front shocks.  He was able to find a part number that fits but could not tell me the number or if the parts were Bilstein as OE.

It is always fun to have the right information.  Especially the right information from the internet!  The parts guy was confident that the information was wrong because I found it here.

You guys rock. Since having new tires installed 4 months ago my 2002 Z-66 seemed to bottom out which I blamed on the tires. After reading this thread I ordered new bump stops part no. 15153958 from RVS Auto. OMG the ride is sooo much better, the truck sets about an 1 inch higher in front. Best 40 bucks I ever spent. Super easy job, but I did remove the tires and wheels just so I could check the brakes. Good thing I did the ijits at the tire shop had over tightened the lug nuts and the rotors are showing some warpage. Can't complain too much since they are the original rotors with 188,000 on them. Just hate it when someone else cost me money. Lesson here is after having new tires installed always check you lug nuts.

I replaced my stops and now it pulls to the right. WTF? How could that possibly affect the steering? I still have the OEM tires with half the tread left @20K. Just seems odd that it started pulling right after the Bump Stop change.

IF something up front is messed up and one side sits on stop and the other doesnt.??

They're both "seated". The right side sits a quarter inch higher than the drivers but I think that is because of the garage floor. A slight variance from side to side is normal i would think.

I recently realized these "stops" were missing from my truck (2002, Z66, 251K miles). I'm thinking about replacing them, but was wondering what symptoms this will fix. I've been driving this truck since 2009, I got it with 130K on it. I don't know how long they've been missing.

But I've never noticed the truck bottoming out.

It will ride better as suspension is design to ride on the stops for most part
also they help shocks keep it from bouncing so much
And prevent metal onmetal contact when it bottoms out.

buy them and install very easy to do and well worth it.

To install jack up side not under tire but on frame so suspension droops.
Remove old one and what is left
Push in new one.
Let jack down and it will seat in the mounting cup.
Repeat other side.

Do not use old one or used on either get new as they are some sort of FOAM/plastic/CUSHY stuff.

Yeah, I've got a set on order. Just wanted to know whether I should expect them to make a difference in the extra bounce I get out of the front end. I replaced my shocks a year ago hoping that would help, but there was nothing wrong with the shocks I took out.

Thanks.

I needed replacement bump stops and this thread was very helpful to me in locating them.  Part of the problem in finding them is that they seem to be called a few different names; bump stops, joust stops, and bumpers.  Once I finally found the GM replacement part numbers I was good to go!

I thought that I'd share where I ordered mine so that others can easily get them too. The best deal I found including shipping and handling was through www.gmpartscenter.net.  If you sign up for their newsletter, you can get a discount code for $5 off, making my total for all four bump stops $63.50.  This was a savings of $40 over buying them through my Chevy parts department.

Front Bump Stop/Bumper = 15153958
Rear Bump Stop/Bumper = 15039397

Cart with front & rear bump stops added: https://www.gmpartscenter.net/index.php?p=cart

Hope this helps anyone else looking for bump stops!  :)

How do you when you need new bump stops?  And are they easy to install?

Mine dry rotted away and never touched
Then one day they were gone... I guess fell out or rotted completely.

I suggest jacking up that side and just feeling them to ensure they are still in good condition and not rotting.

Replacement is easy, they just set in a cup, pull old ones out and put new ones in with no tools.

I thought I would update this thread with the part numbers I used for the bump stops. I had a hard time finding the right part number for the rear bump stops, they are about 5.5 inches tall. For reference I have a 2003 Z66 Avalanche.

Front bump stops: 15153958
Rear bump stops: Dorman 523-065 or GM 15270578

All Hail, You ROCK!!!!
Finally a solid lead on the rear units!
I posted a question about them some time ago and received good info
but they didn't give results like what is on my 06 Z71.
Your info does.
THANK YOU, and everyone else who replied.
