For those of you that like beaches and the Great Lakes...

Windsor-Essex County is surrounded on three sides by water. It amounts to 100 miles of shoreline.

(just in case you like collecting sand from all of the great lakes... you know who you are!!!)

Point Pelee National Park is the most southern land mass in Canada , sharing the same latitude as Rome and Barcelona .
This provides the area with a Carolinian climate which makes for some very interesting foliage and animal species

Here is some more Point Pelee Trivia

Point Pelee National Park

Monarch preparing to cross Lake Erie at Point Pelee National Park (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Point Pelee National Park is located, not surprisingly, at the tip of Point Pelee, in Ontario; it’s a long peninsula that juts quite abruptly into Lake Erie, near Leamington, Ontario, at the southernmost tip of Canada‘s mainland.

The region is steeped in hundreds of years of history. From the creation of the automobile in early 1900s, the War of 1812, World Wars … and the freedom revolution that eventually abolished slavery in Canada.  As a matter of fact, if in the area, you can visit the Underground Railway.

The park’s climate is warmer than most of the rest of Canada, and so it is home to many species typical of southern areas.  It has a lush, almost jungle-like forest.

The park boasts an abundance of reptiles and amphibians and several species that are rare in the rest of Canada. Examples are the fox snake, the spotted turtle and Canada’s only lizard, the five-lined skink.

The park is also renowned as Canada’s finest bird watching spot. Over 360 species have been sighted, of which hundreds stay to breed there. A visitor would also see many Monarch butterflies that abounds while on their southward migrations.

French explorers named it Pointe Pelee, meaning “bald point,” because of its lack of vegetation.

In 1918, duck hunters and naturalists lobbied and are the reason it’s become a National Park. Still, the park is precariously vulnerable; it is small, and it’s in a region that is 97% surrounding land that has been severely manipulated for housing and agriculture. It is commonly believed that over ten species of amphibians and reptiles, including flying squirrels, have disappeared from the area in the 20th Century.

And for all you Bird Lovers...

Point Pelee National Park of Canada
Monthly Summaries of Autumn Migrants
September

Many species of southbound migrant land birds attain peak numbers during this month. Most species that are common in August remain numerous through September.

Arrivals expected in early September include:

Sharp-shinned Hawk
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Gray-cheeked Thrush
Palm Warbler

Arrivals expected by mid-September include:

Turkey Vulture
Hermit Thrush
Cooper's Hawk
Solitary Vireo
Parasitic Jaeger (scarce)
Dark-eyed Junco
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
White-throated Sparrow
Winter Wren
Lincoln's Sparrow

Arrivals expected by late September include:

Peregrine Falcon (uncommon)
American Pipit
Dunlin
Orange-crowned Warbler
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Rusty Blackbird

Buff-breasted sandpipers are often numerous in the Onion Fields by early September. With the passage of any cold front between approximately September 12 to 18, a massive movement of broad-winged hawks can be expected.. This is also the time when large numbers of blue jays first arrive. By mid-September, common terns are abundant in off-shore waters. However, the number of terns has declined severely in recent years.

We should be at the Point during the peak of Monarch Butterfly Migration.

Point Pelee is known for attracting over 380 species of birds including many songbirds. The real show is when monarchs gather here between August and October, because it’s the shortest crossing point over Lake Erie during their 3000 km journey to their winter home in the mountains of central Mexico. Arrive on the right day and you may see them by the thousands. There’s even a butterfly hotline you can call to see if it’s a good time for viewing them : (519) 322-2371, or watch updates on Twitter: @pointpeleenp

On a major migration route - 10,000 monarch butterflies can land on Point Pelee in a single day!

French explorers named it Pointe Pelee, meaning “bald point,” because of its lack of vegetation. The National Park is precariously vulnerable; it is small, and it’s in a region that is 97% surrounding land that has been severely manipulated for housing and agriculture.

It's a huge sand bar, sand bars move. Pointe Pelee is a recent geological feature, the Great Lakes once extended much further inland. It's impossible to know for sure with dredging for shipping lanes what each minor manipulation of our shores do

The Great Lakes contain 95% of the freshwater of North America -- if these waters were evenly distributed over the entire continent's land area they would reach a depth of 1.5 meters or 5 feet

I have a friend, who knows somebody, with a relative that works for a chain of hotels.

There are 2 good ones in the area that I may be able to get a good rate for rooms.

Anyone wanting to stay over Saturday night please let me know,
and I can get a group of rooms at discount rate.

I reserved 4 rooms @ Comfort Inn on Dougall Ave. in Windsor. "Chevy Avalanche Fan Club" rate is 65 bucks.
http://www.choicehotels.ca/en/comfort-inn-windsor-hotel-cn318

It is in a better location, with newly renovated rooms, lots of parking, and closer to the restaurant and casino.
http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g155021-d183157-Reviews-Comfort_Inn_Windsor-Windsor_Ontario.html

I booked 2 double queen rooms and 2 single King rooms but you can change room type at check in if you wish.
I kinda figured Didit and Desire would need rooms and Shels mentioned they wanted to stay over too.
(leaving a double queen room for anyone wanting to stay over!)

We would welcome you all at our place, but we only have the one guest room!

Comfort Inn Windsor

2955 Dougall Ave.
Windsor, Ontario

Well chit, guess I need to change rooms then, that doesn't play well with our other guest though since I don't know where this one is, and she lives right down the street from the Huron Church one, lol.   sigh   I'm sure she has GPS< lol.

How many miles is this one from the other one?

You are more than welcome to stay on Huron Church... it is only 5 minutes from our hotel (2 exits on the expressway)
The Dougall location is freshly renovated, quieter area, better parking, and a little easier to get in and out of, for the restaurant and casino.

(A) is Comfort Inn, Dougall (B) is Comfort Inn & Suites, Huron Church

We are brining Trouble, but we also have a room. Jeans and polo will be fine, I would think. I am sure Beave will be in the same.

THINGS TO BRING TO CANADA
1) Walkie Talkie
(CH 3)

2) Full Tank of Gas
(fuel in Detroit is around $3.35/gal Windsor $4.67!!  banghead)

3) Credit or Debit card to obtain Canadian currency from a local ATM

(paper bills can be traded for Loonies and Toonies to make it rain hail at one of the many "ballet" establishments)

4) Chairs and a Blankie

(for those of you who want to embrace the excellent warm, sunny weather in Canada.)

5) Sunscreen - for the people listed in #4 and those that are follically challenged.
(Remember you will be at the Southernmost Point in Mainland Canada, and the reflection from the Igloos intensifies the effects of the sun!)

6) Beach Clothing
(shorts/sandals/walking shoes, etc...)

7) A Healthy Appetite!!
We will have lunch at the river, after everyone meets up. and then dinner will be the best wood fired oven baked Pizza ever!!!!

8 ) More Canadian funny money!!!
(for those going to Caesars to make a donation, or downtown to watch the "ballet")

Is this a place to buy lunch?  Are we picnicking?

3) Radar Detectors

I assume they are illegal in Canada?
That is good to know.

That is good to know.

We are gonna grab a sub of choice at Subway then go to the river for a picnic lunch,
Drinks/Salads/Chips/Plates and such provided. (also a Chip Truck!! Yummy fries available)

Lunch would not have been till around 1:30 or 2, (or whenever the charcoal got hot) so we opted for an early picnic and then ride out to the provincial park.

Radar devices WILL be confiscated, as well as a hefty $170 dollar fine!

If you prefer, you have the option to grab a "Gut Puck" at "Rotten Ronnies" since we are meeting up in the parking lot.

We had a great day too!!!
It was great to see everyone!  love

Next time we (those crazy girls) can do the Winery Tour!
I'll hook the ladies up with the Formal Affair Party Bus...

or the Beast  Thumbs up!

...and the boys can go to one of the many beautiful golf courses for the day!!!  [/size]

We can even stop at Ava's favorite place, for some of the best food and ice cream in the county!!!
 Woohoo!

But I'm not sure you'll wanna do wine tastings all day...
and then go for Ice Cream!!
Cheesy:

Sweet! Either will do for me!!! And Karl...there is ALWAYS room for ice cream!!! Maybe we go there first  Tongue

Sorry to hear about it.  I've had a keyed spot above my passenger side rear tire for I don't know, maybe six years.  If my truck was as new as yours when it happened I'm sure I would have taken care of it.

In my opinion I really have no choice but to have it painted, the plus side of it is, the body shop will go around and spot all the other chips, etc, grrrr lol.

Now if it had been on the 03, heck I had a can of factory spray paint, lol.  Spray a rag wipe it on , get on with the day hahahaha
