dwswanger... Since you started this thread modify your thread and each time a 2500 owner chimes in put their name down, if you don't mind..

Then we can get a accurate count..

Hey dwswanger, I don't have a 2500.  I often wish I did because they're kick arse, but I don't.  I was commenting that I think wuan2000 got one a couple months ago in addition to his white cammo wbh.

Hehe, life's been busy.

About to spend $2k on her to keep going for another year (hopefully...) and had me reminiscing which brought me back to this site - surprised its still active!

Engine mounts (both sides), tranny cooler lines, engine cooler lines - all victims of rust that must be replaced. This on top of the fuel pump, brake lines, passenger side fender, rear calipers, and some stuff I'm sure I'm missing - more victims of rust which have been addressed over the years.

I loved this truck but I go through old bills and think about all the extra money that has been spent on pre-mature rust related failures and it makes me vomit a bit in my mouth....and I haven't even hit 100k miles yet.

If I wasn't commuting such a short haul (maybe 20 miles a day), I'd have traded her in on a new SS but can't really justify it right now. Oh well...nothing to do but hope things will get better...

I'm still here.

I'll drive the Avalanche a couple of times a month. I'm doing my first brake replacement in May. Not bad for a truck with 226K miles.

Here I am!!! I got a 2004 2500 that I bought roughly 3 years ago and like several of the OG 2500 owners I'm considering letting it go for a Durmax. This is my second Avy and I love the trucks but I'm starting to get frustrated with mine. I tow less that 10k lbs and she is struggling bad on small hills, plus getting 5-7 mpg is no bueno. I've even thought about doing a Duramax/Allison conversion just so I could keep the body of the truck but I can't get the wife to sign off on that :beating: . I'm still wrong my options but just very hesitant about dropping more $$$$ to upgrade to airbags and other mods in an attempt to improve towing in an11 year old vehicle that will most likely soon need more parts from normal wear and tear.

How many miles on the plugs.. If your towing don't try to get 100K out of them change them every 50K. Simple things like a dirty MAS, air filter, dirty injectors or maybe even restricted cats and you will be down on power and show no codes.

Cheapest way to pick a few ponies is a cat back, tune, fresh plugs and wires. You've got the Flowmasters and CAI...

My last tune up was about a year ago around 75,000 miles and now I'm at 98,000. And I just did the factory recommended 100,000 mile service as well. Swapped all fluids, plugs, wires, 180 thermostat, K&N Air filter, flow master exhaust.

I think you are hitting the beloved 100,000 miles blues. Things like brakes shock and frontend parts need attention right around there.  Randy gave you some ideas to look at like the MAF and cleaning the injectors.

Another thing I was thinking about is what a couple members recommend is changing the front 02 sensors I'm a "if it's not broke don't fix it" type of person but the more I think about it the more it makes sense to change them.

Oh yeah it's either car payment or car repairs but don't throw the baby with the bath water, it will come a time when you know when to trade it.

Good point on the O2's MS2500, they should be changed at around 100K give or take. I could tell the difference when I changed mine somewhere around there..

They came on the truck when I got it from a one owner who just wanted a 2500 for looks and ordered it at the time with out any towing options! I think we have a few more 2500's out there I hope and wish we had more picks of Places and Work that they do!  Donald

Well got change is still  cruisin, and now thinking of 1 more mod.

I have always noticed a lot of heat coming from that big block under the hood  and I am thinking of putting a 2014
Z 28 air extractor on and thru the hood.
On ebay just the factory open extractor is  about 125$  and it will mean cutting a pretty big hole thru the hood  and fashioning a drip tray  but thats my next mod.

Also today and I guess I should put this in maintenance section  I  found a place on my Avalanche I have never been before  in 12 years of AV ownership!!
and it is a big trap for leaves, in the front door jam there is a flap of  fabric in the lower forward corner  I pulled it back and there are a lot of leaves trapped on both sides just asking for rust to begin. Tomorrows project to clean it out   Even though I have blasted in there at the quarter car washes  and also blasted down thru the front fender air extractors,  there is a LOT of leaves trapped in these 2 areas.  GO check your avy

8.1s  forever    the number  496  just sounds good saying it!!            GOT CHANGE

I have one.  I've been trying to locate some cladding to replace, but even the salvage yards don't have any Avalanches.  Anyone have an inexpensive source for this?  I'm looking for the wheel well trim and the front bumper cover.  Is mine the only one that averages 11 miles per gallon?  Love my truck, had the bad mileage.  Will be selling at some point.  I drive 70 miles round trip to work daily.  Don't know if anyone else does this, but every 5 years or so, I dye the plastic and it looks great.  Can't imagine why no one else seems to do this.

GOT CHANGE
Man, I love your rear bumper.

I think the 11 mpg is about average for these beasts.... I plan on swapping in a diesel at some point to help with that. I bought it with the intention of doing the swap in the future.

Hey Nebula, you say you dye your plastic. What product do you use to dye it? And you say it lasts about 5 years?

Hi joeairforce!

I like the white. And it looks leveled already.

I still don't know about the leveled part, but I did discover it has a 3" body lift on it.

Like EarlyBronco I just bought my 2500.  Bought mine a couple weeks ago and it is a white '02 that looks much like Randy's.  My refinish restorer should be here tomorrow and so I will post picks after I get that applied.  Wish mine was as loaded as Randy's tho. Mine has power seats, leather, moonroof.  But it also has a TERRIBLE radio/speakers.  Maybe the best feature is the mileage, only has 56,000 miles on it and not a spot of rust!  The Avy now lives in Cincinnati, OH.

No kidding, same here.  I live off Summerside across from Clepper Park.  You'll find me driving around in a yellow Z-71 currently with a silver SnugTop (though I may be taking it off soon with summer coming to an end), not to be mistaken with the yellow one I often see at Quaker Steak & Lube.

Does the door cladding say 2500 right next to Avalanche?

If so then there is a red one running around Muskegon MI...

Ways to tell at a glance if it's a 2500 depending on your angle and if it's moving are.

1. Front view: 2500's have an extra air inlet above the license plate.
2. Side view : 2500's are all 8 lug.
3. Side view : 2500 4x4's usually have (4x4) on the rear quarter panel unless owner removed it.

Back in the saddle again...  :B:    In this case, a black 2500 from DWSWANGER. Mmmmm.... super clean and me likey!!

Swapped out to new 41-993 spark plugs that I gapped to .045 once I got home.

On deck: getting coolant situation taken care of, figured out it was a bad coolant level sensor. Gotta track down a rogue xfer case wire and add a few grounds for stereo. Probably upgrade the steering and do the control arms / ball joints in one fell swoop while I still have time over the next few weeks.

After having a few other suv's/pickups in the interim since my 04, I was tired of being underwhelmed, so I'm ecstatic to have a prime specimen.

1) The truck starts up with a hard turnover
2) Sounds like a wannabee diesel for first 5 minutes.
3) You have to be delicate with accelerating or 1st 2nd gears sound whiney.
4) When you hit a hill or go over 2500 rpm the clicking starts under passenger side (cats?)
5) Total power loss!!!! More than 40%. It will gets its power delivery but you have to really press on it.

Things I noticed.
1) Oil collection on oil pan. Small drop forms at plug. Tracing it up to top of pan and around filter.
2) Transmission pan also has condensation around it.
3) Steering pump is slightly over filled. See condensation around that.
4) motor fan will spin freely when engine is off.

Things that I fixed.
1) power wire under dash board melted to the steering wheel frame that keeps the steering wheel from hit you in a crash. Cut all my engine power. Had to get it fixed. Afterwards, I disconnected battery and checked all fuses. Replaced a few of them, connected battery , which rebooted computer.

1) The truck starts up with a hard turnover
A) If it takes a while before firing, or fires eventually and then immediately dies:
a)Confirm your PCM has all connections tight (and that your front diff vent tube isn't spewing on the cables)
b) look at your MAF sensor and your camshaft (CMP) sensor, pcm extended cranks if no CMP signal.
c) check fuel pump relay by switching key from off to on and youll hear pump turn on for ~2 seconds.
d) check your spark plugs... chances are they are many levels of gunked up. The plugs need to be changed rather frequently, ~40K miles (your points 4 and 5 are also likely to be affected by these).

2) Sounds like a wannabee diesel for first 5 minutes.
A) how loud? Piston slap most likely
3) You have to be delicate with accelerating or 1st 2nd gears sound whiney.
A) Transmission pump, if you got in 1, 2, 4 and R, then it's the planetary gear (3rd is direct 1:1).
4) When you hit a hill or go over 2500 rpm the clicking starts under passenger side (cats?)
A) sounds likes cats.. check O2 sensors as well.
5) Total power loss!!!! More than 40%. It will gets its power delivery but you have to really press on it.
A) Sounds like restricted exhaust (cats) check O2 sensors.

Get new plugs, ACDelco Iridiums, gap down to .045 vs the 060 that they are set at.

If your throwing any codes at all... post em up. If your getting knock, then its most definitely your spark plugs.

Hey OKcruising. You break it down into my language. That is organization and no fillers, awesome! I'm getting my scanner this week in mail.

I'll check o2 sensors by seeing fluctuation in numbers.

I'm probably due for spark plugs if you suggest 40k miles. And ACDelco is they way to go.

Fuel pump is solid. I here motor at turning key. Battery went dead in the 4 day weekend cold weather, I didn't use the truck. I probably should have fired it up occasionally.

Sadly I think you are right about transmission gears and transmission pump.

And finally, it is all about the sensors my man. They get pretty pricey.

Stay in touch! I'm going to get back at you in a few days.

Troop,

Not a problem. The 4L85's while incredibly robust, is not immune from problems from time to time. The great thing is that they are plentiful to find salvage, rebuild, or new. My 04 2500 had a slipping trans at 90K miles, while my 06 looks to have a healthy one at 124K.

As for spark plugs... when you have em removed, you might notice how the ones at back of the engine (closest to transmission) are likely to have the most damage.

I changed plugs on my 06 I bought last month, front plugs were moderately OK, but got steadily worse the farther back in the engine I went. My theory based on a lot of reading is that it means the intake mani needs to be taken off and soaked in gasoline to remove the oil buildup and clean it.

Hard to tell with just a short glimpse at idle, closed loop, the O2 sensors were cycling and temp was 180 but should be warmer unless it was cold out and it wasn't fully warmed up. You need to be able to look at it while driving under load, WOT, MAF output and see what's happening. It's really hard to say without data logging, does that do data logging? Have someone driving while you record the readings.

I'll warm it up in morning and then drive it to work. It will record frames. I'll have to mess around with it to see if I can record live data. O2 sensors were functioning, but the #1 O2 sensors need to stay consistent at .7 roughly, #2 O2 sensors should be the ones flunctuating. I read that to be true even at idle. However, tomorrow I'll have a second video to compare to. And I'll see if I can itemize the readings we want to view. If not, what are the main ones you want to see Randy? And is it possible a code would pop up only when driving?

No the O2 sensors will always be cycling.. As fuel is added and subtracted the voltage output or signal will go up and down as the ECM is trying to achieve the desired AFR usually around 14.7 to 1 depending on load. The rear sensors are only there to measure the delta after the converter. If you think they have more than 100k on the them you might want to replace them.

Probably the first thing I would look at is the MAF, I'll have to look and see what the numbers are for it but you should be reading in lbs or grams of air entering the engine. The reason I say to check it first is because it gives the most important info to the ECM, which is the amount of air and temp going into the engine and allong with info from the other sensors, all calculations are are based on it. Look to see if the readings should clime steadily as you open the throttle.

Also look at the load percentage, it should clime and go to at least 90 percent when you go to WOT and accelerating from 5mph to 70mph. Be careful if your doing this solo, best if you have someone helping..

Edit... Also you should start a new thread in engine problems as this is the wrong place to talk about it..  :jacked:

Sorry late to the post.  2002 2500, bought 2 years ago with 70k miles, current 77k miles.  2006 Sunline Camper bought 2 months ago... the reason we got the Avalanche, to be the tow vehicle.

Nice trailer
Thanks, the plan was to get it in the spring, but this was the model we wanted and it was a great deal in excellent shape.  Drove 400 miles to pick it up.  The Avalanche towed it great the 400 miles back.  Can't wait for next camping season.  Got to finish up the maintenance/repairs to the Avalanche and order some new HD tow mirrors and we will be ready to go.

I still have my 2004 2500. The only "recent" photos I have are from a camping trip a couple years ago. They show the truck bed tent I use.

Snow tires are back on it.  I have a steep driveway, our minivan was at the base and not going up the icy drive.  Hooked up to the Avy.  Popped the van up the hill, not a single tire slip on the Avy.
Tomorrow the Avy gets a new blower resistor.

Hey guys. It's been about 3 months since I posted to all 2500 owners.

I have changed out my alternator with a 145. My old one wasnt charging battery (a 90 stock). Well I also changed out my transfer fuel pump too. Now my throttle body is working at 50%. Does a bad throttle body do harm to any other components? I am going for the install and programming. But I had a 7 hour hike from amarillo tx to Fort collins. It wouldnt perform pass 65 mph. Did anything get damaged or what could have been damaged?

She is dying. Luckily I have some upgrades to give her throughout the year. New transmission (upgraded 4.56 gears), 2500 stall torque converter, Raylar performance kit, and upgraded transfer case with differiential gears. That will cost about $18k. However, I still have to do new steering from super steer, tie rods, wheel bearings, and control arms.

With all these upgrades I should start checking wiring to find any indicators of bad wires.

Has anyone tackled this restoration before to keep their avalanche alive? Any any feed back on throttle body would be very useful.

I'm the original owner of a 2002 with 190,000 miles.  I special ordered it and was told by the dealer it was the first 2500 delivered in MN.  This truck is a keeper, it won't be sold or scrapped.

She needs some repair, just rebuilt the tranny, but the motor is still solid.  She has started to show some rust - needs passenger rocker panel repaired/replaced and driver rear fender or 1/4 panel replaced.  I'm going to have my body guy pull all the cladding and go over it with a fine toothed comb and fix (properly) anything that needs it.  Cladding will get painted to match the body - BLACK of course.  While we are at it the frame will cleaned up too.

I'd appreciate any other suggestions on updates I should make!

Count me in! I thought for sure I had posted here, but it after looking, turns out it was the 'the few, the proud, 2500 owners' thread over in "mods".
Picked up an '04 2500 last November, just turning 102K now. Had the typical TPS 'limp-mode' issue a few times. Cleaned the connectors on both ends, and so far ok for the last 4 months. Can't beat the torque, these things could pull 747's around the airport... towing aside, it's got to have the lowest bed height of any 3/4 ton on the road.  :A: A lot of you guys probably frown at this, no lift kit, no big tires. I agree, but to a point.
For me, it's much easier to load heavy gear in the bed, and the lower CG makes for better handling on twisty roads. (keeping the corner exit speed up saves on brake wear) :o

I'm still here. 187,000 miles. She hasn't seen any major repairs yet.

Just put on these in last 11,000 miles:

Spark plugs/wires/coils
Transfer fuel pump
Throttle body
MAF
Shocks
Front rotors and breaks
Locking gas cap
Intake manifold gasket kit
Oil pressure sensor

Engine is strong. But I'm laughing cuz I have a semi extreme transfer case leak and rear seal to engine leak. And it holds on to gears too long before shift then you feel the clunk after. So looks like at about 190,000 miles I'll be doing a transfer gas rebuild and either a Jasper transmission or a rebuild.

I still am saving for end of year mods. Full Traction lift kit 7.5, 17 inch 4inch offset wheels, 35 inch tires, New front end suspension, and raylar performance kit or a 496 engine from White performance with extreme cam shafts and crank shaft. I want to take all the cladding and x line it, but replace rear bumper with a steel one and x line it.

Does anyone know what the 4x4 2500 transfer case takes for oil? And also what transfer case is in the 2500?

NP246... I just replaced mine a few thousand miles ago; freakin shift pin dropped out on the OE one haha drained all the fluid and lockefd me out.

2 bottles of the special GM stuff... got output shaft seal leaks on the new one; but not stressing it too much; it's a super small seepage.

Hey I'm still here. I upgraded from my 2003 charcoal gray(it was totaled by someone)  to a 2004 Sunburst orange 2500. Found it online, (90 K miles) and had it shipped up from Chattanooga TN to Massachusetts. Had to put about $2500 into it. Front end parts, alignment, tires, fuel pump, battery and new OEM style rims. Took off the 2" rear wheel spacers (for sale if you are interested). Is this site still active?

It's with a heavy heart that I post one less 2500. Mine was totaled in an accident over July 4th weekend. Everyone is fine, no one was injured but the truck was a loss. Everyone loved the AV. She did everything we asked of her towing the boat, the Boy Scout trailer, pulling the parade floats, and taking us wherever we wanted. She never left us stranded and for a 2002 I find that impressive.
I've been slowly starting a search for a new to me truck. I would love to have another well maintained 2500 Avalanche 4x4. If anyone knows of any for sale please PM or email me. JacquesG96@yahoo.com

Thanks

Yep - thnx - Bought it about a month ago, after looking for about 6 mos.  Looked at 6 2500's in a three state area before finding this one. Most of the ones I looked at had "lots" of miles, rust, or were just "used" up.  This was a one owner, fully loaded, new tires, brakes, battery and only 97K, paid $ 8,900.00

That is a sweet find jbrnigan!!

I paid $7000 for my 2002 Avy 2500 with 155000 miles. Not quite as nice as yours though!

Since the purchase, I have replaced the factory shocks, all drive line fluids, serviced the transmission and filter, belts and hoses and coolant, belt tensioner, and added airlift air bags - another $1200.00  Not because anything had failed, but, because these maintenance items needed attention, and I will use the truck exclusively for towing my R.V.  Next spring I will install a couple of Magna flow mufflers - dual exhaust system.  For under $11K I should have a tow vehicle with H.P and torque ratings unmatched by any late model gas pick up.  Since I only tow my R.V. a few thousand miles a year, I'm hoping this will last me another decade.  We'll see.

Yeah.. He's probably okay on the front end with 100,000 miles on it if it's been serviced regularly but it's not far off, he should start collecting the pieces..

Tow mods should defiantly be on the to do list...

Previous owner replaced ball joints and a couple of tie rod ends, sway bar bushings & power steering pump.  Thorough inspection shows the rest of the front end to be fairly solid.  On the tow side, I tow a 30' Jayco, tow wt @ 7400 (cat scales).  Am using a Tekonsha P-3 controller and Equal-i-zer weight dist. hitch (left over from my other truck - '07 Tundra)  Any other suggestions are welcome.

As MS03 2500 suggested to me...
You will want to check all your u-joints and see if any of them have play and/or a rust stain forming where the cross goes into a cup bearing. If you see rust stains, it's toast for sure.
I posted a pic of my rusted cross for our viewing pleasure.

Thnx for the heads up - u-joints were fine.  While having all of the drive line fluids replaced, all drive line components were inspected with the intent to replace or repair any obvious wear or defect.  Nothing lasts forever, but this Avalanche was well maintained and the recent services and P.M. will hopefully get me the reliability and towing performance I am looking for.

A couple of items I would recommend

A Super Steer Idler Arm support.
http://www.supersteerparts.com/products/trucks,-vans--suv/general-motors/chevygmc-2500.html

Get a solid front sway bar and add a rear sway bar.

Front bumps from a HD 2500 Z71

Bilstein 5100 Shocks

The 2500 AV is a beast but it does have a few weak links.

That a look over at the 2500 specific towing mod area.
http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/board,50.0.html

Or the 2500 performance mod
http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/board,47.0.html

I forgot get a steering stabilizer.

ha that's exactly why I bought mine from my old man, sure my Sierra was amazing for a 1500 but it just couldn't handle the new toy hauler, so bring on the 2500! sure it has 194k miles but I only paid $1,600 and it was meticulously maintained

I am back!  After a 6 year 'sentence' to Hawaii.  I left my girl on blocks in my garage in Reno.  After starting her, the fuel pump died.  I'm here to tell you that is a challenge to change in a garage with no room on either side and you have to crawl under from the back.  She has just over a 100k now.  I pulled the wheels thinking I'd have to do a brake job and put the wheels back on.  Still over 50% of both the front and rear factory pads...unbelievable.  I love this truck.

Got a little bit of looseness in the front steering.  Reading threads here now about that.  This truck has been the best purchase I have ever made.

I just bought mine a month ago. 2002 2500 Avy with only 111k miles. Talked the guy down to $7500. It's in great shape, with only a small dent in the back driver's side door. Only drove it a couple thousand miles before it died in our garage. Thought it was the cps, but that didn't fix it. Thankfully someone had changed it to the new style with only 1 o-ring, so it wasn't too bad to get out. I'll be changing the fuel pump this weekend, which hopefully fixes it. It starts right up and runs for a few seconds before idling down and dying. It hasn't thrown any codes. The fuel pump makes a weird clicking sound when you turn the key on instead of a steady whine until it builds up pressure and shuts off, so I'm pretty sure it's the pump going bad.

Bought an 02 2500 2 months ago.  My first act.  Fell in love with it at first sight. 40000 miles blue.  Perfect truck.  Came from Fla. I'm from R.I.  truck is a Beast.
