2500 Rear Leaf Spring Shackle
« on: August 31, 2017, 12:26:21 PM »

Anyone know of any heavier duty shackle on the market.

I was under the AV and notice mine were kinda leaning LOL

I suspect the rear swaybar is acting like a Track bar limiting side to side motion and it found the leak link.

I was going to pm my 2 go to guys but I figured to may be good to post the question so everyone knows.

The rear leafs are what maintains side to side motion, maybe the bushings are worn.. Got picture?

You don't want to see that picture, it's a rusted mess. I'll post one later but the sides of it are leaning and i'm pretty sure its ready to let go.

Not pretty... #4 and #11, looks like they are available. Might be able to shop around with the part numbers..

Not pretty at all, if they break it will come through the floor.

Also places like LMC Truck carry those to, with a GM part number they may be able to match them.

Hey R yeah I'm in the process of replacing the rusted brake lines and I had to lift the body up. I figured treat the frame rust at the same time

Sweet mother of Jesus is that thing bad, I was spraying some PB Blaster in prep to change it saturday and a big piece of rust fell off in my hand. That thing has a hole in it. So all you 2500 owner should check your rear spring shackles

Brine is the enemy of all enemies.  I'm about to try to salvage what I can of Barney's, our '01 Suzuki XL7, undercarriage and frame.  Looks a lot like that or worse even.   :'(  Good luck with your beast.

Man, I sure hate seeing this.

A lot of good trucks just rot away.

I'm glad to see when owners are addressing these issues.

I'm not sure I have what it takes to live in an area that causes such problems.

I have a hard enough time keeping mine in good running order without having to worry about rust all the time.

Best of luck with your repairs.

Here I go again, after having issues getting clearance so I could pull the bottom bolt from the shackle. I  eventually disconnected my rear swaybar, shock and trailer hitch. The top of the bed is shoulder high the wheel arch is around 44 inches and the tire is still on the ground.

Here you can see the swaybar and hitch hanging down

Holy cow  :o I think it's time for you to invest in a lift.  ;)  I'm trying to live vicariously through you as I would love a lit but it's not in the cards.

3 floor jacks(2 on the side I'm working on and 1 on the other side) and 2 bottle jacks under the axle, along with some straps holding the leaf spring.

One of the things I was trying to explain just because the tire is lifting up does not mean the spring has no tension on it, it means the suspension is at it's travel limit so it does not damage a shock or break a brake line. Once you disconnect any part of want is holding a spring or in front a ball joint you will be in for a big surprise that could kill you.

It's one of the reasons when someone asked about changing a ball joint themselves, if you have to ask you need to take it to the shop.

I got to admit, I've never worked on leaf springs before.  I replaced the entire suspension on my 325i last year and that was far less daunting than what you have going on.

Yeah thats one of the differences between a car or even a 1500 from a 2500. it's dry weight is 6600, add fuel your probably around 7,000 and you still can throw 2021 pounds in the bed. If the shackle had broke the spring would have gone through the bed if it did not catch on something. Its one thick strong spring not to be taken lightly

OK back to this, has anyone tried Sulastic Shackle on their 2500-3500 GM truck.

It's kinda pricey so I don't want to pull the trigger yet without a opinion on them.

Thanks Randy on paper they could cure the bouncing over railroad tracks when empty issue.

Still debating spending 399 bucks for a 22 buck stock shackle replacement.

Oh yeah the video show what a pain in the azz it is to change the shackle

Well got around to getting back to this a couple days ago, it was worst than I thought.

It still was holding up the corner of a 7,000 pound truck.
