There was a recall a few years back involving the wiring harness for the blower motor solenoid. I had problems with my 06 Z71 and had the harness replaced although the dealer claimed that my VIN number was not on the list for the recall so I had to pay for it. The problem I had was that the blower motor would not turn on in extreme heat or cold conditions. I read a lot of articles claiming that it was due to moisture getting into the area under the glove box where the motor and solenoid are housed. I also read that the original factory harness was undersized and the wires would overheat loosening the connection. Whatever the case, more than one of the articles I ran across stated that a fire could result due to this problem. I'll see if I saved the original recall papers and share with you if I can find them.
Sorry for your loss.
