NOTE! The documentation and images in this Technical library is intended for educational use only and is intended only for CAFCNA members. It is NOT for commercial use whatsoever!

Service to components and/or systems, especially safety related such as, but not limited to the following posts in this topic, should be by trained personnel only.

SIR Caution

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zones. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

SIR Disabling and Enabling Zones

The SIR system has been divided into Disabling and Enabling Zones. When performing service on or near SIR components or SIR wiring, it may be necessary to disable the SIR components in that zone. It may be necessary to disable more than one zone depending on the location of other SIR components and the area being serviced, refer to SIR Zone Identification Views . Refer to the illustration below, to identify the specific zone or zones in which service will be performed. After identifying the zone or zones, proceed to the disabling and enabling procedures for that particular zone or zones.

Passenger Presence System Rezeroing Procedure

Note: This is for information only and intended for use by qualified GM SIR trained technicians only.

Links inactive unless bolded!

Introduction

The passenger presence system (PPS) is a calibrated system that requires rezeroing when the system has been serviced or replaced. The procedures below are designed to assist in the rezeroing of the PPS. Before you start, read these procedures carefully and completely. For further information regarding the PPS refer to SIR System Description and Operation .

Important

The following procedures must be followed:

  1. Read this procedure carefully and completely.
  2. The PPS will not function properly if the PPS rezeroing procedure is not performed.
  3. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - SIR after successfully completing the rezeroing procedure to ensure the system is functioning properly.

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important

Before rezeroing the PPS, the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.

Important

When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.

  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all SIR and PPS components, connectors and CPAs are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

  Important

All SIR and PPS DTCs must be cleared before rezeroing the PPS. The presence of current or history DTCs will prevent the PPS from rezeroing and may set additional DTCs.

  5. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  6. With a scan tool, request the passenger presence system (PPS) rezeroing procedure.
  7. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the rear view mirror until the rezeroing procedure has been completed.
? When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status at the rear view mirror indicator.
? If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the rear view mirror will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1 second intervals for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  8. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  9. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed perform the Diagnostic System Check - SIR .

Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front

Removal Procedure

Caution

Replace the passenger presence system as a complete assembly to prevent possible injury to the occupant. The bladder, the pressure sensor, the seat cushion, and the control module are assembled and calibrated as a unit. Using only some of the components in the service kit will cause the passenger presence system to operate improperly.

Refer to the upper image of the two below:

  1. Remove the seat cushion trim cover and pad. Refer to Seat Cushion Trim Cover and Pad Replacement in Seats.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the bolts that retain the electronic control unit (ECU) (1) from the bottom of the passenger seat cushion frame.

Refer to the lower image of the two below.

  4. Remove the pressure switch (2) from the bottom of the passenger seat cushion frame.
  5. Remove the push in retainer's (1) that hold the bladder tot he seat cushion frame.
  6. Remove the inflatable restraint passenger presence system from the seat.

Installation Procedures

Refer to the lower image of the two below.

  1. Install the inflatable restraint passenger presence system to the seat.
  2. Install the push in retainer's (1) that hold the bladder to the seat cushion frame.

Refer to the upper image of the two below:

  3. Install the pressure sensor (2) to the bottom of the passenger seat cushion frame.
  4. Install the bolts that retain the (ECU) (1) to the bottom the passenger seat cushion frame.

    Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 2 N?m (18 lb in).

  5. Connect the electrical connectors.
  6. Install the seat cushion trim cover and pad. Refer to Seat Cushion Trim Cover and Pad Replacement in Seats.
  7. Re-zero the inflatable restraint passenger presence system. Refer to Passenger Presence System Rezeroing Procedure in SIR.
