Problems With Your Avalanche & When Built
« on: 03/12/02 06:08 AM »

Instead of making an unscientific observation, lets try and get some data.

First, to figure out when your Avalanche was built, open up the driver's door and look at the white sticker that is found where the door's edge meets the b-pillar.  In the upper left hand corner is a date e.g. 08/01, 11/01,  01/02, etc.  This is the month your Avalanche was built.  Mine is 10/01.  If your Avalanche was built before 10/01 you should reserve your answers to the first four choices.  If your Avalanche was built on or after 10/01 you should reserve your answers to the last four choices.

No Problems:  You have never had to bring your Avalanche to the dealer for any warranty related worked.  If you brought your Avalanche in for a courtesy free wheel alignment, you should still indicate this as "no problem."  If you need torsion adjustment or other work, then it would be a problem.  Standard maintenance items, oil changes, tire rotation, etc., wiper blades, etc. don't count.  Dealer installed accessories (except roof rack) like bug shields that didn't add the tape also don't count.  This is for manufacturing problems.

Minor Problems: You had to bring your Avalanche back to the dealer for warranty related issues to the manufacturer of the vehicle.  Minor problems involve items that don't impact vehicle driveability and would include cracked rear window trim, minor adjustments to water management system or tailgate strikers, internal switch not working, radio failure, bad speaker, minor problem with exterior trim, minor paint chips.

Some Problems: You had to bring your Avalanche back to the dealer for warranty related issues to the manufacturer of the vehicle.  This might include several minor issues (don't count bringing it in to find out it's broken and coming back after the part is found - that's one service call - multiple calls for different minor items).  Also if you had to bring in your Avalanche for one time problems that impact the long term life of your Avalanche.  Roof rack rust, metal filings, major leaks in the water management system that were fixed in one service visit, OnStar antenna missing, roof rack installed wrong, burning engine oil fixed in one service visit.

Major Problems: Your Avalanche has been to the dealer multiple times for moderate issues or a long list of minor problems that can't be fixed in one attempt.  You have serious leaks in the water management system that can't be fixed.  Your Avalanche is burning oil at rate greater than 1 quart per 3,000 miles and the dealer cannot fix the problem after one attempt.  Severe rust that requires roof repainting.  Or did Chevrolet exchange your old Avalanche for a new one.

I'm hoping this is an interesting poll with some eye opening results.

I like the Poll.  I was hoping someone would post one like this so we have an idea whether or not problems are related to the manufacturing dates or not.

Guess I feel pretty lucky. Born on date of 01/02 with no problem other than about dealer installed scratches that they later buffed out for me (minor in the clear coat).

Blue smoke on startup and excess oil consumption.  No roof rack.  To dealer twice to fix smoke and oil.  200 miles after last fix, no smoke and oil level is steady.

Born on date 09/01 no problems but rear driver side heat vent blows very little air

My date is also 09/01 and I have the same problem with the heat in the rear on the driver's side ???  Also possible problems with ring and pinion gears

Update:  I decided to actually sit in the back seat and play with the heating controls.  Noticed if you push the shut-off control real hard to the right the heat comes out alot stronger.  The driver's side seems to be a little more sticky than the passenger side.  Give this a try and see if the heat comes out better.

Well, I wish I could tell you when mine was built, but she's still in the shop for the THIRD STRAIGHT WEEK!!!

1)Radio replaced, kept loosing the time.
2)Burning some oil, hopefully just break-in
3)Pain in the ass putting gas in (2500)
4)Roof rack rust comprimised the paint surface.  They're painting under the gaskets, shouldn't be visible at all, so I'm ok with that.  Gaskets on back-order, so that's holding things up.

This is the first time she's been in, so if they clean up everything, I'll be happy.

Still love my truck...
Guess I'll have to suffer in my M5 till she gets back.

Ummm...maybe I have had a problem since reading BGA2500's latest post.  One day I got into my Avalanche and my time was off by 3 hours on my clock.  I found it really odd...my partner kept insisting that I must have pressed the time change button...but I knew I hadnt and its virtually impossible.  Has anyone else found the time change problem as I have and thought that it was odd and strange but only happened once.  And to come to think of it...one time my radio didnt turn on...and another time the CD player malfunctioned...but those have all been one time incidences so far.... ??? ??? ???

I've had my radio loose time AND lock up (I use the radio lock feature).  Of course, the dealer couldn't find anything wrong.  At least it's on record.

My Avalanche was built on 11/01 and I have had just minor problem. My Cruise controll fail around 2000k miles and needed to be replaced. I did bring it in to havew the transmission checked with the clunking noise sometimes. They have a technical bulitin on it and there is no fix as of yet. I did just notice on my rear door on the drivers side that the cladding is pulling away from the door ever so slightly. Did you get yours fixed and if so how did it come out??

Built 05/01 (call me an early adopter)

Problems fixed:
- Have had front axle bearings replaced (the front axle sounded like I was grinding coffee...the dealer said that the bearings had defects in the at the time of manufacture...fixed and out of the dealer in half a day)
- Have had the entire front axle differential replaced (Same grinding noise reappeared about 1,500 miles later.  This time the dealer says that the entire differential needs to be replaced becasue of a casting defect.  The noise is gone now...let's hope it stays that way.)
- Have had the passenger power window motor replaced

Problems that I still have:
- The left rear suspension severly squeaks going over bumps.  I haven't crawled under it yet to find out what it is.
- Two VERY annoying noises/rattles in the cab.  One from the glove box lock and one I swear sounds like it is coming from the gauges (more of a grinding noise).
- The lock on the passenger side bed side pocket is broken.
- The truck pulls severly to the right.  The dealer put it on an alignment rack and charged me the obligatory $50 to tell me that it is not out of alignment.  I have aftermarket Ultra rims with BFG All-Terrains in place of the stock rubber...the dealer blaims it on the tires.  Next stop...Discount Tire to see what they have to say.

In summary, I am less than impressed with the build quality of the vehicle to date.  I truly like the vehicle and am trying to get the kinks worked out...but if this keeps up it is really going to try my patience.

Born 07/01
Roof re-painted.
Stripped out mounting bolts on the roof rack.
Rust just about everywhere.
Missing strike pads on tailgate.
Tailgate adjustment.
Replaced rear quarter panel that took almost 45 days, but that doesn't count.
Lots of paint chips, but waiting for the cumulative effect. :8:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Production date 08/01 1.Shimmy in steering wheel 65-75mph
solution: dealer dropped driveshaft & turned 180 degrees
2. Occassional blue smoke at startup. solution: dealer changed pvc valve.
3. Av 3/4" lower on driver's side. solution: Dealer adjusted torsion
screw.
4. Firestone tires feathered after only 6500 miles. solution: dealer replaced all four tires under bumper to bumper warranty.
5. Low harmonic sound coming from front end at 35-45mph in 2WD
& louder in auto4WD. I suspect it is the ring & pinion gears in the front differential. solution: none! dealer does not hear the sound
or hears it but pretends not to
Logg :-\ I copy and paste this post from my May 8th 2002 entry.
Since then I occassionally at startup still have blue smoke maybe 2% of the time out of a hundred startups. ::)
I think I need a wheel alignment because my tires are feathering again. Maybe that's the cause of that low harmonic sound I am hearing. I saw a post that some av's get knock out of alignment during transport. Why isn't there a TSB on this subject? :-\

Most of the more serious probs have already been fixed by Chevy....hopefully...leaking bed panels, oil consumption issues.....but it all depends on when your build date is....some of the problems seem to be concentrated on a more specific date in time.... :B:

Mine was built on 8/01 and I have had some serious issues.  First off the rust above the doors is going to require the roof of my Avalanche to be painted.  I don't think that's too cool.  Second the A/C has been loosing refigerant.  Then there have been some other minor issues like seals not being installed right, missing fastening screws, etc.

Bought my 12/01-born Av on 2/28 and have had almost 6 months of blissful no-problem time together.  Unless you count the stinkin' flat tire I had to replace for $160!   ;)

Built in march ( I think) and have a small leaking problem.  It's not pooling just  a few drops.  But.. and thats a big BUT, I was driving home yesterday and noticed a little bit of smoke drifting by while stoped at a light.  It wasn't very much, just enough to catch my eye.  Also, noticed it this morning in the parking lot at work.  I've read the threads on the AV's smoking at start-up, but this is 20 minutes after the fact.  Plus, it has a build date of 2002.  So, I dont' know what to think.   I'll have to see if it keeps up.

Build Date:  04/02

Taken into service department twice for minor problems:

1st time:
Totally Dealers fault.  The GM tubular assist steps I ordered weren't on truck at delivary.  My dealership had to get them sent from the dealership my truck originally came from and put them on.

2nd time:
Tailgate needed adjustment - Done.
Front wheel center piece cracked - Replaced.
Occassional shifting glitch with transmission - Dealer couldn't find any codes and couldn't duplicate.  Has only happened 3 times.
Fuel Consumption is way off of what vehicle is rated at. (9 to 9.9 mpg) I have the 1500 4x4. - Dealer couldn't find any reason for it.  I am suppose to be keeping a journal of each fill up and I am becoming more conscience of how I drive (which sometimes could probably account for my mpg due to a lead foot).

Overall I am very happy with the truck and I think it has a pretty good record considering it is still a very new model of vehicle.  New models always have some kinks that need worked out in the first few years.

Wow I don't no about some of you av owners!!!
My born on date is 7/01. I got the truck april of 2002, It sat in the dealer show room for a while had 250 miles on it when I got it! I now have 14,000 hard miles on it! Haven't had the tires rotated yet they are in great shape! No problems, no water leaks no rattles, I have had the oil change a total of 3 times so far!  I have yet to make a trip to the dealer for my free oil change!
I am just wondering how your av is driven?

Born on date 9/25

Minor problems  -  tonneau panel 3 sags (warranty work this
                               week)
gasket on the outside of midgate glass
                                deformed
                             small tailgate adjustment

This was a demo and surprise the sales manager did not screw it up.  I am having a hard time finding services records for it prior to my ownership.

Sometimes mine shifts slowly out of one gear to the next, I just figured it was normal, also was afraid to have the dealer mess with the tranny. What did they do to yours? Is it fixed? I only have the problem every now and then so I figured they wouldn't be able to duplicate it anyway. Suggestions?

17,000 miles .  Pass. side mirror hairline crack(both times horizontal, shaped like sinewave) happened twice! Did nothing to cause it. Third mirror holding after 7months.  One mirror, the driverside original is orange, the replacement is black, go figure. Am going to leave it so I can identify (too many AVs just like it!). Mine is not special!

Other that the mirror problem, i can't shut tailgate without taking off one of the panels OR dropping midgate and having a window open!! :8:

:B:2002 Victory Red Z-71 4.10 Grey Buckets Sport Leather Convenience Group Born 10-01.   Roared since new between 45-55 on decelerate.  At 10,000 dealer found metal filings in rear end and replaced ring and pinion and bearings.  Helped some on noise.  Poor quality control at dealer as mechanic left emergency brake cable rubbing rear tire and rubbed about half of line off.  The front bowtie replaced flaking off.  Radio locking up as if power failure.  Fixed per some bulletin from dealer (two wires in same connection) Worked.  Not too bad for a new design and early production.

Still love it anyway.  CHEVY FOREVER !!

I bought a '02 [Aug '01] that was green and had sport cloth interior. I have had major appearance problems up until Sept '02 when I purchased a '03 Grey Avalanche. The '02 had overspray from the factory and the roof was not completely painted. So the roof  & hood had to be repainted and the right side of the vehicle had to be wet sanded to remove the overspray. I have replaced the rear driver side door molding due to it not staying glued to the door. [ 10 times replaced]. The rear window has been replaced due to the insulation cracking at the corners. The weather striping around the midgate had to be replaced due to water leakage in to the interior of the vehicle. The sport cloth on the front seats had to be replaced due to wearing out, the black color was being rubbed out and fading. A new passenger mirror had to be installed and repainted because the paint shop messed up the black molding around the mirror. The black outline plastic strips at the bottom of the passenger side windows had to be replaced 4 times each because of imperfections in the material and the service department would put them in anyhow and I would tell them not good enough. The driver side step had a big gouge in it and it was replaced. Then in August '02 I noticed the paint on the roof and hood started to have discolorations. I went down to the dealership, traded it in and bought a '03 just the way I wanted it. Some minor cladding scratches, no paint imperfections at all. The dealership is fixing the cladding problems. I love the Avalanche style and my dealership has fixed almost all of my  problems. I have had no mechanical problems except the AC not really cooling like I think it should.

12-01 Bought  May-2002 450 miles. After reading some of these post's I am afraid to get it wet, look in rear view ( for smoke ), never look at garage floor ( oil leaks ) after pulling it out, ( yes, I do move it at least 1 a month ) I have owned 4 "new" Chevy's and ONLY (1) came and went with no problems (1989-S-10 65,000 miles it truly was " Like A Rock :B:". So I shall say a prayer every night that my dream Z71 will not turn into a Nightmare ( and run over some service manager ) Amen.

mine was built 7-02 and the tire rod came loose w/in 15 miles of the dealership...i thought it was just a bumpy road...anyhow...i had to get it towed an hr later when i figured out something had to be going on...the dealerships said they had to jack it up and turn the wheel straight like 5-7 times to get it around the lot and onto the ramps...they sent pictures of this problem to gm...and they were relieved that this problem was solved before it caused an accident or injury...and since then...no complaints...
