This may be in the wrong topic area but I figured the people here would know best. This is from http://eogld.ecomm.gm.com/NASApp/domestic/brandsel.jsp?year=2004&regionID=1

This mentions updating the vehicle order guide but did the engine get updated/re-evaluated earlier? Are the 03's making 295HP?

Distribution Updates
Updates for Avalanche
Week of 6/2/2003
Effective 6/2/2003, the following changes will be made to the Vehicle Order Guide:

Mechanical section-(LM7) Engine, Vortec 5300 V8 SFI, changed description to "(295 HP [219.7 kW] @ 5200 rpm, 330 lb.-ft. [445.5 N-m] @ 4000 rpm)".

I picked up a 2003 21-page Avalanche marketing package in December. It has the 5300 listed as 285 hp @ 5200 RPM and 325 lb.-ft @ 4000 RPM

So 10 hp AND Sport Red. Now I have two reasons for a 2004!

I remember reading something about a 295HP 5.3L. I believe it is an aluminum block version.

kw

The all-aluminum, 295hp 5.3L is the engine slated for the SSR.

This is definately an Avalanche. I know the automakers change some things mid year and then don't advertise them to the next model year. There must be some information somewhere if any mechanical changes were made or they just reclassifed the HP rating. I am not sure if updating the product information on 6/2/03 reflects '03, '04, or either models.

There was mention in Autoweek a month or so ago , about a 375-400 HP Factory supercharged 5.3 liter that may be available next year in the Suburban, Yukon and Avalanche. It would be part of a performance package and I can guess would cost in the $5K territory.

The Vortec 5300 still has 285 hp in the big boys, rumor has it, a mid-2004 increase is in the works (jan 04) The 8100 is going down in hp and torque for 2004 because of emissions. The SSR and Trailblazer EXT will have the 290 hp motor. Ford will have a 5.4L 3-valve per bore 300 hp option in their "new truck". Have your favorite salesperson log you on to Chevylaunch.com for the low-down on all the new product. Peace out. :B:

So what is the difference between the engines, what gives one vortec 5300 295HP and the other only 285hp? Is it hardware or software that gets the HP out of the engine?

Don't know. I guess it could be something they changed or just a re-rating. The 4800 is up 10HP, the 5300 is up 10HP, and the 6000 is up 5HP. The Caddy and Hummer are unchanged.
