Don't lay down the antenna unless you don't listen to FM radio, get the antenna that sticks to the inside of the windshield. There 2 of them one is un powered and the other is powered. The powered one has a amplified and will pull in many more FM stations
where does it plug into, directly behind the radio or does the lead extend further?

Has anyone gotten this mod done on an 07? I attempted with no success due to the lack of space.

I would go look at the 2007 EXT. If it has a hidden antenna then you can buy the piece that covers the antenna hole just as we did on the older models. I don't think that you will be happy just laying the antenna down, especially if you really use the radio. The reception on mine was no where near as good as it was in the factory position, and yes I ran a ground strap. I ended up replacing it with a amplified antenna and mounted it with double sided tape along to A pillar on the inside of the windshield. It works at least as well as the factory antenna and I think maybe even better!

I remember that it would not plug into my radio. I had to buy an adaptor.......

I don't use FM at all. I'll check with the 07 EXT for the part to cover the whole. Thanks guys, should've thought of that before.

There isn't space between the actual body & engine compartment where you lay down the antenna on the older models.

 ??? Huh  ???

Maybe there is some sort of misunderstanding of the location...or...maybe I don't understand what years you are considering older models...

But 'fer sure on the '02 through '06 Avalanche the antenna lays down...and on other Chevy models as well...

Here are some pics...

Here's what I mean....

I'm speaking of 07+ models. I said engine compartment because I wasn't sure what to call the area where you would lay down the antenna. As you can see in your pictures, there's a large gap where you can easily lay the antenna. On 07+ models, that gap is non-existant & there is absolutely no way to even get the base angeled in a way so that the antenna would be laying down flat because of the crammed space.

I changed mine. I cut the antenna off just above the thick part at the bottom. Then I unscrewed it to fit a 14 ga. wire under it and ran the wire up the A pillar and over the passenger door, tucking it in the channel in the rubber gasket. Works pretty well. A lot easier that trying to lay it down in an 07.

I know this is old now...but the 07 Tahoe's don't have mounted antenna's so their cowl piece will work. (Their's are in the rear glass)...

OK so has anyone done this on the 08 yet?  I did it on my old truck and liked it.  I already took off the antenna on the 08 AV but wanted to buy the panel ... does anyone know if there is a part number for the 08

The wiper cowl for the tahoe should be the same as well.  Being the antenna is built into the rear side glass.  The cowl still has the location for the antenna but it's not punched out yet.

Has anyone seen this AM/FM antenna? It looks like it might be an alternative to laying the antenna down. I don't often listen to AM/Fm but still do at times.

I was looking around for antenna and found the same one.  I found it for around $35 shipped so I might try it.

Did this antenna mod this past weekend.  I did lose a little reception but I listen to XM and Ipod majority of the time.  I recieved the replacement cowl cover and installed it.  Looks good and know I don't have to worry about the carwash pulling it off.  Will try to post pictures soon.

I did this mod yesterday.. Very easy to do.  Now I just have to check reception.  I think FM is OK but I need to check AM.  I don't use AM much but I do listen to football sometimes on AM.

I found this on Ebay for one of those powered block antennas (piece of junk and over $40)

Quote
For the best AM/FM reception nothing works better than a 31 vertically mounted antenna mast. Recognizing that application is impossible on some vehicles our improved amplified antenna is the next best thing. We suggest installation on inside top of windshield for best performance (behind rear view mirror is a great spot) but you can experiment with limitless locations.

I have one of the dipole types Butch used on the previous page and was thinking of using in the rear like he did. In this case I want to insert it inside the cladding in the A-frame or near the 3rd brake light. I just need to check on how much coaxial cable I have lying around.
