Setting Up A Local Club In Ten Easy Steps

STEP FIVE - PICK A MEETING PLACE:

Now you need to pick a meeting location – a place for people to gather for your club event. If you’re planning a simple get together at a restaurant or bar (not the best plan by the way) then this is easy to figure out. If you’re planning a cruise, or live in a large metro area like Seattle/Tacoma, the Los Angeles basin, the New York City tri-state area then you have to choose carefully.

Your meeting place should be as central as possible. It shouldn’t be in an area with heavy traffic and a lot of traffic lights. It will be hard to keep your Avalanches together if you’re fighting traffic. It shouldn’t be hard to find or be a “locals only” location.

Good locations include stand alone grocery stores, stand alone fast food restaurants with large parking lots, stand alone department stores like Wal-Mart, Target or Sears. A rest area that is easy to get to on an interstate (especially rest areas that are designed where traffic in both directions can access the same rest area). A local, state, or national park can be a good place to meet, but you should meet by a distinct landmark. Entrance stations are ideal. If you can find a car dealership that will sponsor you, meeting at the dealership can also be an excellent place to start.

Bad places to meet are “locals only” locations that are hard to find (they make great ending points). Places deep in a city grid that could get mired in traffic, large mall parking lots with multiple anchor stores, on the side of a road where assembly could be dangerous. Remember the golden rule of planning, “when in doubt, check it out.”

On to step six...
