Status: Own an Avalanche 1500 4X2 bought
in October 2001
Drove Before: 1999 Buick Regal GS
Color: Onyx black with gray exterior
trim and graphite interior
Region: Southeastern United States
Optional Equipment: Assist steps, 4.10
differential, convenience package, Z-66 on-road performance handling
package, full-leather seats with driver/passenger six way adjust, power
lumbar and side bolster support and heated surfaces, 265-70-R17 WOL
tires
Summary: Innovative design that hauls people or stuff equally well!
Pro's of Ownership: Versatility, being able to carry 5 in comfort, or haul 4x8 sheets of plywood, or whatever else I need. Ride is nice for a truck (because it's based on the Suburban instead of the Silverado). Fairly good power considering it's moving 5400+ pounds (although, I think I'll install a Vortec supercharger when the warranty runs out-boots HP to 391;-)
Con's of Ownership: The plastic cladding, but I'm starting to get used to it. Gas mileage, but I knew what to expect. Steering is jumpy on the interstate. Poor design of mirror operation (tilt them in at all and they won't fold in).
Experience of Ownership: Use 303 Protectant or Zainos on the plastic cladding to prevent fade and deterioration. The bed mat should be removed every month or two and cleaned along with the bed (water tends to stay under the mat and not drain properly). Always slam the tailgate shut (otherwise it has a tendency to come open while driving), I also recommend keeping it locked, I always keep it locked and have never had a problem with the tailgate opening.
On a scale of 1 to 9, with one being the worst and
nine being the best, this owner rated:
Styling: 7
Reliability: 8
Quality of manufacturing: 8
Drivability: 8
Overall Score: 8
Would they recommend ownership to a friend or
family: Yes

Status: Own an Avalanche 1500 4X4 bought
in December 2001
Drove Before: 1999 GMC Sierra SLT
Extended Cab
Color: Onyx black with gray exterior
trim and graphite interior
Region: Northeastern United States
Optional Equipment: Assist steps, 4.10
differential, convenience package, Z-71 off-road performance package, full-leather seats with driver/passenger six way adjust, power
lumbar and side bolster support and heated surfaces, 265-70-R17 WOL

Summary: Aggressive styling, adequate performance, 4drs and a bed, my living room on wheels!
Pro's of Ownership: The concept of the whole vehicle is just what I need. It can haul a decent size trailer, comfortably seat 5 people, and has big enough bed for my needs. The hard cover with it's three locking sections is great (unlike the Leer 100lb cover I had on my Sierra). The ride is extremely comfortable. The looks are aggressive.
Con's of Ownership: I wasn't too crazy about the cladding in the beginning. The gray looks
OK with the pewter and the black. If I had red, white or orange I would be getting the cladding painted. (it can be done!) The cladding does take the worry out of stone chips though. The wheels should have been polished or partially chromed. A remote tailgate lock would have
[sic - been] simple from the factory, but was either overlooked or turned down by the
accountants. The steering has a little too much assist, but is not annoying. I can't really think of anything else I dislike.
Experience of Ownership: Gas mileage can vary greatly depending on how you drive. Mashing the throttle, highway speed, engagement of 4WD,stop and go driving all adversely effect the mpg. If you are looking for 20mpg out of a stock Av it ain't
goin' to happen.
