Rear Seats - Folding
Your Chevrolet Avalanche is equipped with a 60/40
split folding rear seat. Folding the rear seats is very simple and
can be completed in four simple steps. The 60% side is behind the
driver, and the 40% side is behind the passenger.
-
Move the front driver and passenger seat forward
to make sure you have sufficient clearance to fold the seats.
You will be able to return the front seats to any position you
desire when you have completed the last step.
-
Make sure the rear headrests are pushed all the
way down to their lowest setting.
-
In the middle of each folding seat toward the
back is a small cloth loop. You may have to feel around in the
crack between the seat cushion and seatback to find it. Grab
this loop and pull it toward the front of your Avalanche. The
seat will rest flush on the back of the front seat.
-
Grab the seat back and pull it down toward the
floor until it is flush.
-
Repeat steps three and four on the other side of
your vehicle.
To return your Rear Seats to an upright position
repeat these directions in reverse.
You can find more information in your Owner's
Manual on page 1-8. [Back Up]
Rear Glass - Removal
The rear window can be removed by following seven
simple steps. The process is extremely easy and can be done by
just one person. Before you remove the Rear Glass, you should fold
the Rear Seats back so you have access to the Storage Pocket.
-
If you look at the top of the back window on the
ceiling of your Avalanche, you will see to large levers that can you
pull down. These levers will release your back window.
With one hand on the Rear Glass, pull down the first lever.
Then, while keeping your hand on the Rear Glass, pull down the
second lever. The rear window should tilt in toward you and
come to rest on the Glass-Catch Release Button at the top-center of
the Rear Glass.
-
With one hand on the glass, push the Glass-Catch
Release Button up. As it clears the top of the Rear Glass, the
window will simply tip out towards you. Be careful not to
release the Rear Window by accident. Failure to follow
this procedure can result in glass breakage.
-
Holding the window at the top with the small grab
handles and lift the Rear Glass out and load it into the Storage
Pocket. DO NOT ROTATE THE WINDOW. Be
careful that the window is seated in the three Rear Glass Retaining
Tabs. Failure to follow this procedure can result in
glass breakage.
-
With one hand hold the rear window flat against
the Storage Pocket and with the other hand turn the Glass Lock Knob
located at the top corners of the Storage Pocket to the locked
position. Repeat this procedure on the other side. Failure
to follow this procedure can result in glass breakage, injury or
even death in the event of an accident. Once you have
locked the second Glass Lock Knob the window is safely stored.
Once you have stored the rear window you can either
lower the midgate or return the back seats to their upright
position. The Rear Glass is protected in the Glass-Catch Release.

Midgate
- Lower
The
Midgate is the revolutionary feature of the Chevrolet Avalanche that
allows it to go from SUV to Truck and then back again in less than two
minutes. Using the folding Rear Seats, the removable Rear Glass,
and the Midgate together. You can have a water tight cargo box
that is 5'3" long and seating for six, an open cargo box that is
5'3" long and seating for six, a water tight cargo box that is
8'1" long and seating for three, an open cargo box that is
8'1" long and seating for three, or almost any combination
between. I think you've got the idea. The entire process of
lowering the Midgate can be done by one person.
-
Follow the directions for folding the Rear Seats.
-
Follow the directions for removing the Back
Glass, or if you desire, you can leave the back glass installed for
a water tight cargo box.
-
Stand outside your Avalanche (if you get in the
back the Midgate can't fold down on top of you) and reach in grab
the Midgate Handle. With one hand turn the Midgate Handle
clockwise and with the other catch the Midgate as it comes down.
-
Lower the Midgate until it is flat on the floor.
You read it right. It is that simple.

Tailgate - Removal
Yes, the tailgate can be removed on your
Avalanche. Although it can be safely removed by one person, due to
the size of the tailgate you should get assistance from another person.
-
Open tailgate and lower it about 3/4 of the way
down. With a free hand grab on to the Retaining Cable Clip and
push it toward the front of the Avalanche. Repeat this
procedure on the other side while holding up the Tailgate. Failure
to follow this procedure can result in damage to your Tailgate, rear
bumper, and or body of your Avalanche.
-
While holding the Tailgate in a upward angle,
pull back on the Tailgate on the right edge and then move the
tailgate to the right to release it on the left side.
-
Find a safe place to store your Tailgate so that
it won't get dented, lost, stolen or scratched. Never store
your Tailgate in the passenger cabin unsecured as it can cause
serious injury or death in the event of an accident.

Tailgate - Won't Latch Closed
The Chevy Avalanche is designed with a Water
Management System that channels water away from the joints and seams of
the cargo area to prevent leaks. An area of critical importance is
where the Tailgate meets the Hard Cargo Cover. This area has a
thick heavy seal. In order to close your Tailgate stand at the
center of the Avalanche and with both hands swing the Tailgate up firmly
and quickly. You should be forceful when closing the Tailgate but
slamming it hard is not necessary.
