Review 013 - submitted February 13, 2002 - 7:29 AM

Status:  Own an Avalanche 1500 4X4 bought in January 2002

Drove Before:  1999 Chevrolet Silverado Z71, ext. cab LT w/ 3rd door

Color:  Light Pewter with gray exterior trim and graphite interior

Region:  Midwest

Optional Equipment:  4.10 rear end, locking rear differential, convenience package, Z-71 off-road performance handing package, full-leather seats with driver/passenger six way adjust, power lumbar and side bolster support and heated surfaces, power sunroof, 265-70-R17 WOL tires

Summary The Avalanche is new, but it's frame, engine, transmission, interior are not. The Avalanche is built on a platform that is proven. What good are 4 doors if your driving a bus, or two, your bed is too small to haul anything. Way to go Chevrolet!

Pro's of Ownership:  I also have the factory tubular chrome nerf step bars. Of course I like the functionality of the vehicle. It's quiet. No rattles or squeaks. Everything is top notch. I like the cargo covers (made out of the same stuff as Aircraft flooring). I like the fact that everything locks. I like that not every Tom, Dick, & Harry on the Block own one. (Got to be that way with my Silverado). I like the 17 inch wheels, the 5.3 liter engine. The towing package. 8 coils (one per cylinder) All the gadgets. Moon roof on a truck. Now that is cool. I like the lights that light up your walkway beside the truck at night when you get out. I like the programmable locks. I like having a real back seat and 4 real doors that open independently on one another. I like the ride. I like the power. I like the relocated hood latch. (Easier to find) I like the storage compartments on each side of the bed. It's a very well designed vehicle. My 99 Silverado Extended Cab Z71 LT doesn't compare. This thing is big so look out. It dwarfs the vehicles I park next to. I've always been a General Motors fan and this vehicle pretty much sums up why. Yes, It is a Natural disaster on wheels (at least if you happen to be in it's path) One Mean machine combined with the amenities of a luxury car. 4 Wheel disk brakes. Double piston aluminum calipers. 6 bolt main. Proven transmission. Nice message center. The OnStar is nice when you need it. (Another gadget). Doesn't drive like a 5,600 lb vehicle. I Love it!!

Con's of Ownership:  Back up warning system should be standard. Nicer stereo system should be standard. Still getting use to the cladding, but I think it makes the vehicle stand out in a good way.

Experience of Ownership:  My over all experience so far with my Avalanche has been superb! I don't like squeaks or rattles, and I expect everything to work as advertised. That is exactly what Avalanche has delivered. I've used OnStar for both directions and reservations which was nice when I met my wife after work at a local restaurant on a Friday night. It saved me a good 15 minutes of looking the number up and calling them up, etc. I like the heated seats. I like the Automatic Climate Controls. They have worked very well for me. The engine puts out plenty of power and is there just waiting for the order. I am very careful when I back up, but I have gotten use to it, and I can pretty much judge how close I am to other vehicles although I will install a backup system. I do wish the power lumbar and power bolster were on two separate switches. It seems I always hit the wrong part of the knob. I have tried the midgate system about three times now with no problem at all. Just have to watch the seat belts. The midgate is considerably heavier with the back window out, but it's not impossible to lift. I think they could have done something better about storing the cargo covers. The bag seems to be a little difficult, but at least Chevrolet thought of a way to secure them when necessary. I don't normally let my dogs ride in the Avalanche, but when I have to take them to the Vet (One is a 93 lb German Shepherd) The midgate is great. I put the back seat cover on, lay down a couple of blankets and most of the dog is in laying the cargo area where I want him which keeps the hair out of the cabin. So far no one on else on my block has one. The Silverado's jumped out all over during the sales here recently. I feel sorry for all the Ford Explorer owners around me. I bet their resale value is practically zero. This vehicle is perfect for me. It will handle my occasional trips to the lumber yard and the rest of the time It's like a limo. I'm still amazed at how structurally sound the whole thing is. I mean this thing is super quiet. The comfort is outstanding! The auto dimming driver's outside mirror was a very nice and needed added feature. I didn't have that on my Silverado. It even has two vanity mirrors that light up. I haven't had those since my 1980 Olds Toronado. Of course, I won't be putting make up on anytime soon, but my sister took advantage of the vanity mirror when I took her and my Mom shopping. I don't get any more complaints about leg room in the back seat. The 5 foot 3 cargo bed (especially as deep as it is) will haul a lot, but at least we have the option to haul 4x8 sheets of lumber or sheet rock without having to worry if it's raining or not. I have a baby coming at the end of April and I didn't want to fight to get a car seat in the Silverado. I'll have plenty of room in the Avalanche and the dark tinted rear quarter should keep the sun out of the baby's face.
