Bored over the holidays and had extra vacation to use or lose, so decided to mount my infrared remote that came with my Alpine CD7998 to the steering wheel. Didn't have to alter the steering wheel and hopefully won't hinder airbags or slam the remote into someone in an accident (feedback on that subject would be appreciated). Pretty easy, a $2 9" round cake pan from Walmart and some matching vinyl, cable ties to attach bracket to steering wheel and velcro on the bracket and back of the remote keeps it removable. Worked out pretty well, results would probably vary depending on the head unit but it's pretty easy to hold the remote there and see how it performs (don't try it driving down the road, my wife got pissed)!
IMHO
Pros: Cheap, and if I don't like it I can just remove the steering wheel cover, cut the cable ties, and I'm back to the original steering wheel.
Cons: Doesn't work when making turns, not lighted at night.
The cake pan metal allows some flexibility for tweaking the position for best results, although I would probably want something a little stiffer if I were to do over, maybe two pieces together would be about right but one works fine so far.
