03 Av Recall Notice

The PDF file of the notice posted above lists exactly which VIN number Avalanches were affected. Read that and then go check yours if you have an '03 2500 and you'll know in a jiffy.

And if you're still not sure, or are otherwise worrying, check with your dealer and they should be able to determine it definitively.

If you just picked up an '03 2500, chances are you are all set, as the recall notice says that dealers are supposed to hold all affected stock and not sell them until they have been fixed.

But again, if you are not sure, check with the dealer.

NHTSA has a website.......that lists recalls etc.... not sure the exact web page lingo for the address though

acutally, I just plugged in 2003 (rather than 2002, call me self-interested) and there IS something in there for the '03 Av, nothing in the NHTSA database for the '02:

Make : CHEVROLET Model : AVALANCHE Year : 2003
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V019000 ?Recall Date : JAN 27, 2003
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 5734
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VEHICLES, DURING A 30 DEGREE LEFT ANGLE FRONTAL IMPACT OF SUFFICIENT SEVERITY, A TEAR COULD DEVELOP IN THE MID-FRAME CROSS MEMBER AT ITS ATTACHMENT TO THE LEFT FRAME RAIL. IF THE MID-FRAME CROSS MEMBER TEARS DURING FRONTAL IMPACT AND PRODUCES A SHARP EDGE, CONTACT OF THE SHARP EDGE WITH THE FUEL TANK COULD RESULT IN A PUNCTURE OF THE FUEL TANK AND POSSIBLE FUEL LEAKAGE. ?
Consequence:
FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. ?
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUEL TANK SHIELD. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 20, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR GMC AT 1-800-462-8782. ?
Notes:
GM RECALL NO. 03002. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236). ?

You can also call your dealer and with the VIN number they can check to see if you're on the list. Always good to double-check that yourself though too.

Seems really odd that this doesn't apply to the 2002 also. There must be more under the skin changes than meet the eye. Glad I have a 02 since maybe they found ways to cut some corners on the 03's.

I'm pretty sure that if you have your av listed with mygm.com they will advise you if there is a recall notice effecting you also.
