04 av how 2 remove midgate bar

The window crossbar will stay attached to the midgate if you first take out the rear window then drop the midgate.

If you leave the window in place and drop the midgate, the crossbar will stay in place holding the window.

If, for some reason, you wished to remove the crossbar from the truck, leave the window in place, drop the midgate, then remove the window and find the release button in the lower center of the crossbar window frame.

Push the little button down and that will unlock the crossbar.

Be careful, the crossbar is quite heavy and cumbersome.

It is not really designed to be removed from the truck under normal conditions.

Below is a link on how to operate the midgate.

Operating the Avalanche Midgate

So I’m posting now to tell a story. I needed my midgate to come off to haul a large cabinet and the midgate would never come out since i had the truck. I have had the 2005 Since 2007 and until now didn’t need the midgate to come out. So i found a video that said just take the window out and it should come out - didn’t but i knew now it should i gave it a hard yank and the midgate successfully unlogged itself.
Well then every time i tried to lower the back the midgate would come with it even when the window was in. Took about two months of this annoyingness thatbthe window had to come out when the bed was extended which made no sense. Wife and i bought a 80” gift for the father in law and the wofe and i had to suffer the elements for 35miles today. I searched for two months and today after our trip and refound this thread and today i saw the window “in” sensor. I pushed it in - no luck - put some WD40 and pushed it a few times and it went 50% further in and i heard the latch - midgate stayed and the bottom opened correctly! Thanks again!!

Glad site is still helping peeps.

so many do not know how the midgate works and all the configurations the truck can trully have.

Once we get our ALBUM back up and running plenty of pics from first gen stuff that displays midgate.

ANd it is fun to remove rear windo wand store in midgate and then drop midgate and cruise...

my kid loved it thought of it as his playground.
