Thanks for the reply, but it seem counter intuitive. If it was burned out, why would it come on?
Happened to me exactly as you described.
Twice.
I replaced the burned out pads each time and the symptoms you described went away.
After the second defective pad was replaced, the symptoms have yet to return in over 5 years.
The first time I knew I had a problem was while I was online in my bank drive-thru in the middle of the summer.
As I was sitting there, I noticed my seat was getting hot and I looked over and the seat heater was turned on.
At first, I thought I might have accidentally turned on the heater switch when I rolled down the window.
I turned off the heater and a short time later, it turned itself back on.
Research of the symptom revealed that this was a common problem when the seat heater pads short out and burn up.
I took my seat out and removed the pad that I posted a picture of above.
I bought a new pad and replaced it and the seat heater worked fine for another year before the seat bottom pad went out and did the exact same thing.
Many others over the years have described the exact same thing happening to them.
I do not begin to try to understand why these things act the way they do.
Way above my pay grade.
If you come up with a different solution, we would all be happy to hear about it.
Best of luck with your repair.
