2 8" Kicker Square Subs

M

GUEST
I just got my AV about two weeks ago and the first thing I did was to try and find some space for some subwoofers. After getting estimates of up to $400 I just did it myself. I fit 2 8" Kicker S8L5 squares under the rear seat. The midgate will still fold down also. The subs are in a sealed box made of 3/4"MDF. And man do they slam. :D I will get some pics soon.

Iam using a Kicker kx600.1 mono amp with 4 gauge wiring and an optima battery.

Pics.
Instructions.
Address where I can meet you so can install them in my truck.

Whatever you feel like posting. ;D

If you've managed to make this happen AND keep the midgate functional, you will be considered a minor diety on this board in no time. (y)

The 8s handle 600 peak but rms is 300 watts on them. it will push them but they will be strugglin for power. I had them hooked up to a kennwood 200watt amp and they still hit.

mike02,

what is the volume of your speaker box, i know they need between .33 and .75 cu feet per speaker..? also do you have the 2ohm or 4ohm version of the S8L5?

My vol. is about .52 and I could have gone a little bigger but not much.

realy, .52 total? i thought they needed .33 a piece.... or am i mistaken and that they both can be in a .33 or greater space? also do you think one would do an ok job? or do i should i really get 2 for the better hit?...

Mine are in two seperate boxes and each box is at .52 airspace. And if you wanted one you could go bigger on air space because the driver side rear seat is larger than the other side.

Congrats on the box. I have wondered why so many people have had the idea that there is "no room for a sub in the Av". The space underneath the rear seat is ideal and an easily removed box to allow for midgate operation is incredibly simple to construct.

I think the argument was there is no room for a sub enclosure that will fit in the AV, sound great, and not have to be removed for midgate operation. That is why I am working on the "Bag Enclosure". A slow process, but it should sound good when finished.

Glad to hear that your kicker's sound good. I use to own some back in the day, and I could not destroy them. Kicker makes even better stuff nowdays. Love to see some detailed pics if you can get some.

I've been around the stereo scene for quite a while, not as long as you but I've done my share of competing and working as an installer. ?I'm not too good at designing & building boxes. ?I built mine, but didn't want or need to tackle building a box to go under the rear seats.

When I spoke with a local shop they wanted $150 to build 1 custom 10" enclosure for under the rear bench, and stated they would only be able to get around .7 cu ft. ?Since I already had my Kicker comp which needed at least 1 cu ft, the "rear center console" location was perfect for me.

DS,
Are you planning on building a box for beneath the rear seats? ?It would be very beneficial if you could post the dimensions that you work out, and the airspace it would contain? ?Woofer size?

Yes they do. I love my Kicker Comp, but the Solobarics are phenomenal!

I also went with the Kicker 8SL5's under the rear seats and love em. I think I need to put a little more power on them though, running them stereo 2 ohm load on a 300w amp. >:D

Zimm, you're right about local shops screwing people. If you have the dimensions for a box, a cabinet shop will assemble it MUCH cheaper usually. In the end you have saved money, have a stronger box thanks to usually 3/4" plywood being used and usually they will be glued and stapled together. Many shops will just sling together a cheap 5/8" particle board box with a couple screws and a little caulk to seal it due to lack of precision when it was built.

On the box topic, I'm working on it this coming week. I'll build one to use as a temporary until I get my midgate/sub install finished.

In high-end home audio, MDF is usually the material of choice for cabinets because it is very"dead" acoustically. Any wood finish you see is a very thin veneer. You won't find plywood used for a speaker cabinet.

If a shop doesn't use 3/4 MDF for custom boxes don't use that shop for anything, they are clueless.

Any pics yet?

And specs/model numbers would be great. (y)

*waits patiently*

*loses it*

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Want pics!!!!!!!

Ok. I'm calm now. ;D

Any pictures or box dimensions available? model number of the speakers etc so that this can replicated?

Thanks in advance

Is anyone opposed to doing 2 10's behind the rear seat? I had a box built and it worked out great. Check the link in my sig for photos.

Lightning, your solution looks like it would sound great, however it also looks like it would impeed the functionality of the midgate. The author of this thread claimed two 8" subs with full midgate functionality, hence my interest. I change it over too often to pull a sub box out everytime.

Hey Lighting...

Very cool. How deep are those subs, I have a ten that i would love to do the same as you have. Did you have to modify the brackets on the seats, it looks like you cut them to follow the profile of the subs?

Thanks for any info on what you did.

Box suggestion:

Rather than using a pair of 8" subs, why not a single 10"? Here's how they stack up:

Two 8" L5's: Each has a surface area (sd) of 42.3151 square inches. They have a mounting depth of 4 7/8". They are rated at 300 to 600 watts apiece and require .33 to .66 cubic feet of airspace apiece, or .66 to 1.32 cubic feet for the pair. Xmax is stated at 9.65MM.

A single 10" L5: The 10" model has a surface area of 68.0451 square inches. Mounting depth is 5 11/16". Power handling is rated at 450 to 900 watts and it requires .66 to 1.0 cubic feet of airspace. Xmax is stated at 12.45MM.

So to sum it up, the 10" model is equivalent to 1.61 8" L5's, so there is little surface area to sacrifice in the tradeoff. The 10" model moves a full 2.8MM each direction more than the 8" sub. That 2.8MM may seem insignificant, but it is about a 30% increase in excursion. Output can be roughly estimated by looking at surface area and excursion, and the single 10" model would win with it marginal loss of area but significant gain in cone motion. Also, more power could be applied to a single driver, resulting in more output, and you would gain more output in the lower octaves from the larger driver as well. You would also save a little cash, buying only one sub.

A 10 won't fit under the seat, I think he did right by using 8's.

actually a 10" can fit under the seat. i have a 10" Xtant under the rear seat now. seat locks in down position (with a little mod). >:D
