I just picked up my truck tonight and I had 20 inch wheels installed at the dealer. After talking with the salesman at the tire place, we decided to put on Toyo 305/50 R 20's because of their weight rating and side wall height. They are 1.5 inches taller over all. They look great...but when I turned into the driveway they hit the cladding behind the front left wheel. I am looking for some feed back as to what everyone else puts on their 20's without having a rubbing issue? I need to have them replaced asap. Thanks.

I have the 285/50's on mine and have no problems. You can also get 295's with no problem. I guess you need to go down one size to the 295's.

305/50's should not be a problem??. 305/45 give you an exact size to stock 17 tires.
I have 295/45/20 and the tire is actually a little shorter. I have the 3/5 drop kit and the only thing I scape sometimes is the bottom of the mud flaps when going over a big wow.

I had 305s on my 2002, and have the same ones on my 2003, the 2003 is lowered, both rubbed... minorly. It never effected anything. And if you wanted you can trim the inner wheel well.

luv2boat,

It's probably not the tire. I have put 325/50R20's on AVs and not had them rub (but never on a 2500). That 8.1 is one heavy mother. I would check to see if it is hitting just the plastic or if something else needs to be massaged.

Also, is the tire rubbing on the outside tread block or the inside tread block?

:B: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? :B:

It might be the fact that your running 20X9.5 as far as I've seen most people running 20's with 305's have a width between 8 and 9 it could be that half an inch that's setting you off. I would say run with the 295 or 285's and give that a shot, unless somebody is running 20X9.5 with 305's with no problem? Somebody, anybody. But please let me know if you switch and the rubbing goes away as I was also planning on 20X9.5 with 305's.

And by the way, since I didn't say it in my previous post, your new wheels look awesome!

tiregod1,

At full right turn the inside edge hits the cladding at the back of the wheel well and at full left turn the outside edge rubs the front inner well. I wonder if it is a width problem instead of a height problem? The 305 is 12.3" wide.

Thanks.

sparky,

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like Toyo makes two sizes in 20's that are the same height as stock. 265/50's and 295/45's. Both are 30.4" high. Looks like the 45's are about 1/2" wider and the load rating is a little higher. If the will clear on the turn, I will probably go with those. Thanks for the input. :D :D

luv2boat,

I could be wrong but I don't think there'll be much of a difference in width from what you have now, but let me know how it goes.

Are those wheels and tires rated for the 2500 loads?

I am curious.....

Luv2boat,

I'm at a loss. I haven't put 20s on any 2500 yet so my best guess is that you may need a different size rim and/or tire. I have put 20s on Excursions,2500 HD Silverados, and even a Dodge 3500, but no 2500 AVs yet.

I have a friend with a 1500 AV, we put 20x10 wheels with a +22mm offset and the 325/50 Nittos on. His rubs on the inside edge on both sides at full lock, just a little(plastic only). I'm not that familiar with the 2500 front suspension but I really think that a higher offset wheel would help.

Also, get the truck to a shop that can check the alignment. Make sure that they weight the truck to simulate a loaded condition and have them check everything.

Good Luck :B: :B:

ygmn,

Yes they are rated for the 2500 series. That is the main reason that I went with this combination. The tires are rated at 3000+ pounds each. I will be towing my boat with the truck.

tiregod1,

Thanks for the help and advice. It looks like I have two choices:

1. Keep the 305's. Trim the leading edge of the cladding behind the tire and the trim piece that runs along the bumper support in front of the tire (this will keep the tires from ripping off the cladding). It will still rub on the plastic fender liner at full turn.
or
2. Switch down to the next smaller size. 295/45.

It barely touches anything when the truck is sitting still, but when I back up and turn it hits pretty hard from the added torque on the front end.

I am going back to the shop tomorrow and the manager and I are going to decide which makes the most sense. I will post the results then.

Thanks again.

go to your local rim shop or if your lcky enough to find a sport truck srore tell them what your problem is and tell them to trim your fender wells i had my rear fenders trimmed on my av with a 2/3 drop and 305/35/23's and there is no rub it just bottoms out when i hit a big bump on i-95

I ended up putting the 295/45's on. I couldn't handle trimming anything on the truck, maybe when it is older. The 305/50's sure looked alot better under there. Oh well!!

Thanks again for all of the input. :B:
