My Hybrid TT weighs 3,500 # Loaded i would say at least 5,000 #, Do you think i need a transmission cooler,Also is there anything out there that will help control the engine temperture,One time i notice it go up quite a bit when i came off the highway & went into town. And we have not driven in warm climates. For the last couple of years we leave in May & do not return until August,Put on 10,000 miles a year with no problem so far.We do alot of Mountain driving. Thanks

What he said  :p. A transmission cooler is a must if you tow. As far as the engine is concerned you can change to electric fans and put a cooler thermostat in.  :welcome:

Is it allright to put a transmission cooler in without having a guage in your truck. And what type should i get,And whats the most should i pay to have say the Chevy dealer do it,Thanks

You can do it without the guage. However you can change the guage cluster that has a guage in it. It's very simple to do. You can do a search for clusters, there are some good site sponsors that sell them.

Hayden and True Cool make a stacked plate design that works really well. Try and stay away from the tube and fin design. The factory one is nice too but more expensive. It comes with all the factory lines to make it a nice install.

Sorry, I have a 2002 Avalanche & i called the Chevy dealer & he said i already had one,He said to look thur the grill & it's about a inch or two wide & about 10" long,I looked & on the top right corner there is one,But why know guage in the inside panel? And on this message board i seen that they were saying that 2002 did not come with cooler. Thanks

That one is the power steering cooler. From the factory it does connect to the radiator (this is what they are calling a cooler), But in this pic is the OEM aux tranny cooler PN 12497071. That PN will get you the cooler and the 2 lines to put it in.

So i don't have a trans cooler

You don't have an auxiliary cooler...you do have one built into the engine radiator. Adding the auxillary one will lighten the load on the engine radiator. The RPO for the aux. trans oil cooler is "KNP". If that's not on the glovebox sticker...you don't have one.

You don't have the auxiliary cooler.

AVid beat me to it while I was looking for a better pic.

GM list was $91 last year, just for the parts.

We just moved here last October and  it. Where will you be camping? Are you driving or flying up?

We are camping,Going thur Canada to Dawson Creek,The start of the Alaska highway, going to Denali NP & THE INTERIOR & Southwestern section,Like to see Valdez & Homer,Seward & Keni Pennisula,Where's Wainwright by?

Fairbanks, just over 2 hours north of Denali. Let us know when and where you will be and we could have a GTG there

One key suggestion also is to replace your fan clutch. From what you described it sound alot like what my avalanche was doing. My temps would hover over the 210 marker towing a utility trailer on the highway. My air conditioning took a while to get cool and that was a sign to have this changed. now my temps never go near the 210 marker and that was in 95+ temps this past summer. Combine that with the trans cooler and you will be good to go. Fan clutch was around $60 for the part.

I put in a strong vote for adding a cooler if your towing.

I have the GM cooler pictured above.  It makes for a VERY nice clean install.  If you're doing it yourself, it's a little bit of a PITA to route the lines.  It did make a big difference in my trans temps (I have a trans temp gauge)

There are aftermarket coolers that will do a great job for less money and with a easier install.

Thanks for all the great advice,I will install the cooler & will be back to this great site also,Thanks again

Does anybody know where wildfire got his bug deflector at,And are they just for show or do they work,Thanks

it's a Lund stainless, it works somewhat for bugs, it works great for rock protection

As the others have said - getting a transmission oil cooler would be a good idea if you are towing a fairly heavy trailer up and down mountains. If you get a transmission oil cooler installed at the chevy dealer, expect it to cost you around $300 installed. You can also call around to some local transmission shops to get some prices. The transmission shop will probably save you some $$.

I have a 2002 and regularly tow a 7000lb horse trailer. I did not install an auxiliary transmission oil cooler until recently. I did install a gauge cluster with a transmission temp gauge when the truck was new, so that I could monitor my transmission temp. My transmission temp never got above 210 even when towing up and down some fairly steep mountains in the heat of summer.

Either way that you go, installing a transmission temp gauge to monitor the temp or installing an auxiliary transmission cooler, you are going to have to shell out about $300.
