Was having whining noise, louder when turning right, went away in 4wd,took rear differential cover off and notice 2 broken teeth on pinion!, Ring gear and all other parts were secured and no damage. Question is, would that broken pinion also make louder noise when turning? Pre-load was fine also

One question I have is are you driving in 4WD on dry pavement? If so it is strongly mentioned not to do that especially if turning...It will cause damage.

Broken pinion teeth would not make WHINE noise...
Whine comes from too much back lash or worn gears.

BRoken pinion teeth might give a CHIRP or nasty Metal on metal crashing noise.

Something went wrong with the front differential at some point to cause those teeth to become broken.

A rebuild is in order now.

Stressing the front differential enough to break teeth may have also caused a lot of stress on the transfer case.

It may also be a good idea to verify the condition of the CV axles and front wheel bearing hubs, while you are at it.

Proper engagement of the 4WD system in the future should help prevent future damage.

Engagement of full 4WD should never be done on hard surfaces, at any time.

Auto 4WD should probably be avoided as a standard mode being used.

2WD is probably your best choice, unless driving on low traction surfaces.

No,put it in 4wd to try and determine where noise was coming from..

Wasn't front differential that was damaged. Just rear. I had new tires mounted and they somehow dropped one side of truck off lift, thinking maybe somehow that may have caused issue, but could of just been a weak place in the pinion teeth. No worries, was just hoping to get feedback.

There I go making posts before the coffee has had a chance to fully kick in.

:ROFLMAO:

I have had the rear ends in several of the GM trucks I have owned over the years go bad.

They do wear out and I don't think they are the strongest out there, by any means.

I quit dogging my vehicles after tearing up a few in my Trans Ams and such back in the days of my mis-spent youth.

My truck rear ends just went out with no undo abuse.

It happens.

Best of luck with your repair.

Well go figure, got new ring gear pinion. Went to press on pinion bearing and all the roller beads fall out😂😂😂. But after getting new bearing noise is gone, all I hear now is Mickey Thompson's on pavement, never been so happy to hear tire noise. Lol.
