2002 Full Time DRLs - Instructions for UnderHood Mod

 vertabatt

The newest and bestest mod yet on my Avy!  I took the lazy route and have the fogs on low.

$11.38 for parts, 30 minutes (25 of them making nice neat bends in the diodes for tidiness) and VOILA!  I light up the world! :B:

Hey Vertabatt-
I have this done and noticed last night that when I go to the running light postion, (one past auto on the switch) it knocks off my ambers.  If I have it in the auto, my ambers are always on, which I want.  why is that?
Also, is there a way to change the sensitivity of the 'auto on headlights'?  With my HID's, I don't want my lights on unless I tell them to be on.
thanks

If you want your ambers to stay on when you are in the running light position you can run another diode from the parking lamp relay to your DRL relay (both should be slot 85).  make sure the black stripe is facing the Parking lamp relay.

I was going to do this as well, but most diodes are too short so you'd have to add a little wire to them... and I am too lazy to bother.  Plus, I never run with just my parking lamps on.

As for changing the sensitivity of the auto lights.... no idea!  Others have asked that a lot, search around you may find something.

I am going to do this mod... one question.  I am installing HID lighting low and high beam am I drawing too much juice or should I expect a problem.

thanks for the great writeup

HIDs draw less power than halogen bulbs.  They do draw more power when they ignite, but either way you should be fine.  A couple members have done this mod with HIDs with no problems.

Good luck!

I run this mod with HID's and it is sweet.  I just need the HID lows and I will be set.  It is a great add with the HID's.

For those of you who have a 2002 Avalanche and want All-On-High, I have great news:

You do not need any diodes and you don't even need to access your fuse panel.  The mod takes a couple of minutes and is easily undone for inspection.

In the simplest terms:  Permanently ground your low-beam (-).

In more detail:

1.  Verify which of your two low beam wires is the ground (-).  To do so, remove the air filter lid and filter; remove the low-beam bulb and unplug it.  Turn the headlight switch ON and test the contacts on the wire harness with a multi-tester.
2.  Splice a 1-2' wire into the ground (-) wire with tap a connector.  On the other end of this wire, attach a ring or spade type terminal connector, and create a PERMANENT ground to any bolt on the frame of the vehicle.  You only need to do ONE headlight, and the easier one to access is the right side since you do not need to remove the battery, only ther air filter cover.

Note that the ones which bolt to painted body panels are not a good choice.

For those of you who want an explanation or clarification:

On the 2002 models, there is only one relay for both the hi and low, so you obviously can't use the diode mod you may have read about for the 2003- models.  The switching takes place in the multi-purpose control lever inside the cab.  What the lever-switch does is disconnect the GROUND (-) from the lows when you click into hi-beam (past the flash to pass point).
When you create a PERMANENT ground as described above, you simply take away the lever switch's ability to kill the low-beam's ground (-).

I am now going to try the permanent ground connection with the fog lights to see if I'll have the same results.  I suspect I will and I'll keep you posted.

I came across someone's posting in another avalanche fan club forum which described a method in which you would create a permanent ground from some terminal under the fuse box.  Be advised that doing so will give you a short because the fuse panel is most, if not all POSITIVE (+) wiring.

OKay,

Did the mod...worked fine.......did a bulb check, threw the hazards on...poof no more DRL.

Reach in the truck, flick on the headlights manually...poof DRL back.

Turn headlights off...no DRLs.

What the heck happened?!?!?!?

did you connect the green wire? ouch! pricey mistake

:kidding: I would put everything back to the way it was and verify that it works and then follow the instructions word for word. They are pretty easy and correct.

This is an easy mod for an 02. WHich mods did you do FT DRL's and all on hi?

Okay, I got a chance this AM to put it all back the way it was from day 1......DRL work as GM intended.

Re did the mod, double checked everything....the only way I can get the DRL to come on is if I manually turn on the headlamps.

Do I have the one truck that rolled off the line in 02' that won't play nice with others?

Okay,

I put it all back to stock in the fusebox, and decided to do the mod inside the truck.

Spliced into the green black wire, put it to ground, and it works like a charm :D

I'm good to go now!

Thanks for the help!

1st I would like to say thank you for the detail and effort put into this.  After checking 3 seperate radio shacks in my area I finally found the parts (and the purchase of a lighter from the gas station since i am a non smoker) and in about 5 mins it was all complete.  Can't wait to see it at night, got 8000k HID kits on Highs/Lows/Fogs so should be damn bright!

this is also for the 04 WBH correct?? Im just scared to try :sigh:

Yup!  Don't worry... it really is SUPER easy!  Just follow each step as you go and check your work. Honestly, if I can do it anyone can.

ya know i tried to do the reverse of this last year and my DRLs would not work at all anyone know why this would be.? I needed to change them back for the effen safety inspection.? I got the inspection done but saw this thread go through the new posts and said hey......They also said i could not have my third brake light covered and I also had to replace my Green drls with clear.

Way to go Freebie or is it Trader or FreeTrade or Taxman cometh

Vertabatt,

First - Thanks!  This was an awesome write up.  I followed your instructions and it took me longer to drive to Radio Shack than it did to do the Mod.

Now that I've got the 2008, has anyone figured out the FT DRL for the 07/08's yet?  We need a really good instruction topic for that.

In need of some help. I got some diodes and everything I need to do it but i got a diagram for the 2002 and i got an 03. If any body can help me out I'd appreciate it

For the 2003-2006, just go to the first page of this thread and follow instructions.  Will take you longer to print out the pages than it will to complete the mod.  Did it on my 03 in a matter of minutes.
