2002 Full Time DRLs - Instructions for UnderHood Mod

 Thanks all for the input, I will check out RS tomorrow and get some diodes and shrink tubing then. (will have pics when done)

OK, finally got around to do the lights. I had the shutter speed way fast to cut some glare off of the lights for the front pics.

And like I asked if anyone had 4 or 5 spares to pass my way if possible.....all RS had was a 50 count pack (lucky me) and I will be glad to share these leftovers with the next guy/gal that just wants 4 or 5 while they last! Maybe then the over abundance of these can go to good uses and not get trashed or sit on a shelf for no reason.

Send me a name and address if you want some 1N914-Type Diodes P/N 276-1620.

Thanks, Eric

If you do this mod as the instructions say, installing only one diode at a time, then checking it out, its kind of hard to mess up.

Even one at a time, you can still get the diode backwards (don't ask how I know!!), but it's an "easy fix", and putting them in backwards doesn't do any damage (at least in the short term...)    :needhug:

How in the heck do you kow if it is backwards???

The FTDRL's don't work...    >:D

The little black stripe on the diode should face the same direction it does in the write-up pictures.  That indicates the direction that the electricity flows, from the non-striped side to the striped side.

I wrote the damn walkthrough, and I still got at least one or two diodes backwards.

6. On the far right row, there are several wires, locate the double royal blue wire. Remove this wire from its current position and drop it down one (1) hole. Now the right side should have a double green wire at the top, followed by a single red, a single blue, a double purple, then the space just vacated and the newly relocated double blue wires.

Thanks to XRover and WesTexAVY!

Could you attaach a pic for step 6...I have a 2500 but the wires look a bit diff.
Thx

Got it done last night! :D Took about 25 min.

My only suggestion is to take your time when pulling on wires/plastic. Plastic can become pretty brittle and does break. I learned this the hard way when modding my first car.

Follow the instructions and you can't go wrong. The hardest part was wiggling the green block out, which did take some persistence. Thanks for the great and easy instructions.

this mod was awesome. Thanks for your effort, and hard work posting step by step instructions.you made it sooooo easy.thank you again

Great write up! Question.....I like to run with the fog lights, DRL, and parking lights on in the evening and the latter part of the morning, I think it looks cool......Can I run a 5th diode from the 85 of the DRL to the 85 of the Fogs and accomplish this and still utilize the override factor of the low beams?

Nevermind I found it!  :)  Again Great Write up!!

Vertabatt  (y) and to all who help others on this site.

For all of us who are challenged THANK YOU, like the thread on replacing the intermediate shaft so simple you do not have time for a beer. It took me two weekends, had to replace lower shaft to.
Darkhorse thanks for the updated photo. Read the thread and took a copy of it to the AVY and did the mod.
I drive on a lot of back roads at night can?t wait to use this mod. To day I was on a very narrow country road with bicycle riders traveling the other direction. When I cam around the corner a full size Chevy heading toward them I so I flashed him, this was just after noon, not sure if I blinded him or he was impressed with ALL ON HIGH. I thought he was going to lock-em up he hit his brakes so hard.
Three mods down 9997 to go or is it endless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This mod is SO SICK
The total vision  is SO SWEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
The bad when you go back to the low beams it is like driving with your parking lights on.
Time for the HID?s.
I think I broke my Son's camera, it quit working with the head on pic.
  Batteries.

Chad,

I followed your post about this mod, followed it to the "T", and I don't have the Daytime Running Lights.  I still have to turn my lights halfway on to get the ambers to come on.  Did I miss something??

I don't understand what you are saying when you say that you have to turn my lights halfway on? What lights do you have to turn on halfway?

After seeing the pics of the amber lamps, I guess the DRL's in question are the small lights attached to the fog lamps??  I thought it was the turn signal lamps on top of the headlights.....  I will re-check my lamps to see.  PS. What I meant by turning halfway on was if I move the switch up one click, the amber lamps above the headlight come on.

This is one great mod.  So easy, and the PDF file with pictures, which I printed, virtually made this mod stupid proof.  If all mods were as well written as this, mods would be a breeze.  I can't thank you enough!  This article rocks. Total cost for the diodes (yes - a pack of 50) and the heat shrink tubing was less than $8.  Took all of a half an hour to complete, even with trying different configurations.  (y)

I initially was going to buy the 4 on high kit for 50 bucks because the instructions written by others using diodes weren't clear enough to make me feel comfortable.  But this was absolutely painless!

I finally settled on 3 diodes (# 1, # 2 and # 5).  This gave me Fogs-on-Hi only, All-4-On-Hi only, and Fogs-On-Low only.  I did not want the FTDRLs on at night so I omitted diodes # 3 and # 4.

Question:  While not a big deal, I can no longer operate the fogs via the button switch on the dash.  I can't turn them on or off while on low beam only (or with just the parking lights on) as before.  Is there an easy way around this?  If not, I can live with it.

Thanks again.

Turn the diode around for the fogs.  :)

Double checked all the diodes, they were installed correctly.  Reversed diode 5 (contrary to instructions), did not fix.  Removed and checked all diodes with volt/ohm meter - all OK and reinstalled.

So what was it??  :E: :E:  This mod works (tests) differently depending on the position of the light switch.  All my tests were done with the engine off and by manually turning on the headlights with the light switch.  My results were in my previous post.  However, everything works as it should with, this mod, when the light switch is left in Auto and the engine is running and THE GEAR SHIFT IS IN DRIVE (parking brake on, wheels blocked for safety).  I simulated night time by throwing a towel over the light sensor.

Should of thought of this (I am a retired techie) because the DRL's go out in Park and back on in Drive (during the day).
:E:

Thanks everyone.

:help:
What did I do wrong?  Everything works EXCEPT the DRLs now.  I even removed all of the diodes, checked the fuse and the lights.

nada - nix - nill -zip - bupkus

:E:

Any ideas?
